2 NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS * Friday. December 8, 1961

The strange story behind Petula Clark's new hitpETULA CLARK'S new hit, " My Friend The Sea," has an

unusual story surrounding it-as strange as any of themany time-honoured tales concerning the sea itself. For thetune was actually born in England, established itself on theContinent, and returned to this country in the guise of a hitGerman song.

For some years. Pet has beenbuilding a reputation for herEnglish interpretations of Con-tinental songs. So when the timecame for Pet and her recordingmanager, Alan Freeman, to findsome material for her, it is onlynatural that they should turn theirattention to the latest batch ofdiscs which had just been receivedfrom the Continent.

Top of the pile was a lovely Ger-man tune, beautifully sung by thatscintillating Continental favourite,Caterina Valenta. Pet and Man likedit so much that, without stopping tocheck its origin, they phoned lyricistJack Fi8liman and asked him to takea taxi to the office.

Jack heard the new song and wasas enthusiastic as his colleagues.Without a moment's hesitation hedeclared that he would like to have

revealed by DEREK JOHNSONa go at writing some English words. And' having established this point, thethree then decided to check on thequestion of the original composers.

This was when the big revelationoccurred ! For it transpired that thewriter of the melody was none otherthan our own local -born musicaldirector, Ron Goodwin ! Ron hadwritten the tune some time beforeand, somehow or other, it had foundits way to Germany. Over there, there was an instant response, andimmediately a German lyric wasadded.

Then came the Valente recordingand so, not unnaturally, when thisparticular disc came into Pet's handsshe at once thought that she wasdealing with strictly German material.

Especially as. despite its Britishorigins, the melody has a somewhatGerman -flavoured air about it -

Jack Fishman went ahead andwrote his English lyric, and Pet dulyrecorded the song-which has nowhad the effect of carrying her backinto the top table.

In view of Pet's close associ-ations with France, I asked herwhether she would be re-recordingthe song in French for theirmarket. "

Perhaps in due course I might,"she told me. " But I don't think itwill be for a while. You see, my" Romeo " in French has only justbeen released there-and I'm pleasedto say it's selling exceptionally well."

" Romeo," indeed, has proved an

enormous success for Pet throughoutEurope -.and her policy of recordingin as many different languages aspossible is certainly paying dividends. For language is the biggest barrier ofall to any artist Who is trying tomake a reputation in Europe-butit's a hurdle Which Pet has over-come magnificently.

Yet despite her various foreign -language ventures on discs, Pet stillprefers to record in Pye's Londonstudios. She has taken part in acouple of sessions in France, but sheassures me that British recordingfacilities and techniques are verymuch better.

Two titlesA week or so ago, Pet was again

in the Pye studios cutting anothertwo titles. which she anticipates willbe fOr mid -January release.

" I can't tell you anything aboutthe new record, because it's all veryhush-hush at this point," she chuck-led. " But I'm very pleased with it,and optimistic about its chances. And for me, that's really something.Because 1 can't say that I havealways been personally thrilled withmy work on discs."

At the moment, Pet is experi-encing a spell of inactivity, pendingthe arrival of her baby-and shetold me how very excited she is atthe prospect. I asked her how shefelt, and whether she wanted a boyor a girl.

1 feel just wonderful," she said" In fact, I don't think I've ever feltfitter in my life. As for a boy or agirl-well, I don't care what it is.just as long as it's one or the other! "

With the birth now fairly immi-nent, Pet has no further plans forthis month. But she's hoping to beback in action-on a limited scale-around the middle of next monthFor that is when her next record isdue for issue, and she is anxious toundertake a few television spots tohelp exploit it.

" I'm also supposed to be workingout the details for a new LP rightnow," she continued. " But quitefrankly, I just can't put my mind toit with the baby coming along. Ishall have to get down to it in theNew Year, though, because .1 thinkPye are hoping to record it before Igo back to France at the end ofJanuary."

And her subsequent plans ? Well,it's possible that she will star at aleading Paris music -hail towards theend of next month-but she tells methat her doctor is rather against thisproposal, especially as it will involvefairly extensive rehearsals.

But shall we have the oppor-tunity of seeing her on a Britishstage next year ? Well, Pet is alittle doubtful on this score." Actually, I have been invited to

play a summer season in town," sheconfided. " But I think it's going toprove to be impossible. You see,I'm more or less committed inFrance for the summer period -besides which I have various dateslined up in Spain and Germanywhich will keep me pretty busy."

Pet also said that she is seriouslyconsidering the possibility of under-taking some live work in theUnited States.

Going backYou will remember that I was

last there a couple of years ago,"she reminded me. " And I did somerecordings on the West Coast. ButI seriously think that the time is nowapproaching when l should try tomake my mark there as a live enter-tainer. And maybe I shall attemptto do this during the course of thecoming year."

But that, of course, is lookingahead. Right now Pet has fair moreimportant things on her mind, as sheeagerly awaits the birth of her baby.

It is appropriate that, at this sig-nificant milestone in her life, sheshould also experience the pleasureof another record success.

And I'm sure, hearing in mind howconsistently Pet has delighted us overthe years-ever since she was a verytiny tot, we should all like to assureher of our affection for her. Here'swishing Pet the very best of luck, asher happy event rapidly approaches.

A family favourite for Christmas!

CLIFF'S FILM IS BEST TEENAGE ROMP EVERLET'S face it-British pop music stars aren't too well served

by the film industry. More retard their careers thanadvance them on the big screen.

So I went to see Cliff Richard's By ANDY GRAYfirst top starring film, " The YoungOnes ' (Warner, from next Wed-nesday) with some misgiving. ButI'm delighted to say I came awayvery happy.

Cliff is excellent, and the wholeKenneth Harper -Sidney Furie pictureadds up to the best musical Britainhas ever made and the finest teenagescreen entertainment produced fora long time-anywhere:

Shot in colour, Cliff is the camera-man's dream. He looks a million. And he moves around easily, evendoes a couple of dance sequenceswith Carole Gray, a honey of a girlfriend who does everything well andmust surely become a lasting star.

Even with Robert Morley, theacme of nonchalant acting, Cliffisn't lost and comes through sceneswith him naturally and with a lotof charm. There's a fight scene, in which

Cliff displays his judo prowess, andsome love scenes in which he's justthat little bit uncertain of himself asto be true to teenage life, speciallywhen a sexy film star (SonyaCordeau) drools over him.

Cliff also shows a great sense offun in a quick -change act in whichhe appears briefly as a melodramahero, a soft shoe dancer, a Britishcolonial type, and other crazycharacters.

Songwise, Cliff puts over eightnumbers, supported mostly by theShadows, who have their own spotlater, playing " Peace Pipe " and" The Savage."

Cliff's numbers range from theall-out rocker, " We Say Yeah,"to the slow, romantic ballads,"Girl In Your Arms " (his currenthit) and "Lessons In Love."Cliff has a fine bunch of young

performers with him. Besides CaroleGray, there's a good comedy teamin bespectacled Richard O'Sullivanand mad -hatter Melvyn Hayes, dancer Teddy Green, and cute littleAnnette Robertson. You'll love themall. -

The story revolves round a LondonYouth Chin which will be torndown in a rebuilding scheme unlessthe members can raise £2,000, whichthey do by staging a big concert inthe now closed Finsbury Park Em-pire

The whole, merry plot shows thatteenagers have that spirit of useful

Only criticism is the idiotic bitabout their pirate radio transmitter, but in view of " Fall -out Freda," thenickname for the Voice of NuclearDisarmament and its illegal radiotransmissions, this part will be bangup to date, even though I felt it theweakest part of the picture.

Otherwise it's a great piece ofbreezy entertainment that I canrecommend to all readers.

at Boone has a big hitPAT BOONE'S return to the hit parade comes at a

particularly opportune moment, bearing in mindthat he is due to pay us another visit next month.American stars hopping over to this country usuallycome with the express intention of boosting their latestrecord release-but in Pat's case, he's away to a flyingstart some weeks before his arrival.

He will therefore find himself in the fortunate, and perhapsslightly unexpected position, of merely having to consolidatehis chart status. For with "Johnny Will" currently sellinglike hot cakes, it seems probable that Pat will be in the TopTen before long-perhaps even in the elite Top Five.

It's certainly extremely gratifying to see the talented and per-sonable Pat doing so well this year-for you will recall that he'salready enjoyed one sizeable 1961 hit with " Moody River."

And it's rather significant that his return to the disc limelighthas been accomplished by speeding up the tempo-whereas thegeneral trend today, with stars such as Elvis and Cliff, tends toslow things down. Pat reached his peak with slow ballads of the" I'll Be Home" and " Love Letters In The Sand " calibre, butthen he slipped out of the reckoning.

Now he's back with a vengeance-and Pat's revised 1961 styleplaces the emphasis on beat. Which just goes to show thatballads are not having it all their own way these days. One big surprise to me is that Pat's previous release, " Big Cold

Wind," didn't reach the top table. It was a rousing solid rockopus, which I felt sure was destined to catch on with theyoungsters. So why, Qp wonders, has "Johnny Will " proved a so much bigger attraction ?is to be found in the entire conceptiori of the song, which has a moll wider appeal than theof Pat's former releases. Plus the fact that it boasts an extremely intriguing story line in

byJIM

RICH

PAT as a racingdriver in " State

Fair."

I think the answerstrictly' eenage beatthe lyric.

in 'Johnny Will'There's also the faintest suspicion

of a country-and-western flavourabout " Johnny Will "-and, ofcourse, this idiom is beginning tocatch on a big way in Britain now.Incidentally, the song doesn't stemfrom country origins, despite itsfamiliar plaintive sound. Actually,it's another product of the long-established song -writing team ofTobias and Evans.

Although Pat will be undertakingsome television when he flies in nextmonth-including his first bill -topping appearance in the PalladiumTV show for nearly two years-theprincipal reason for his visit is tomake a film. It will be the firstmovie he has made in this country, andhe is eagerly looking forward to theprospect

One of the reasons why he is soanxious to film here Is that he willbe guaranteed a lengthy stay inBritain.Previously all his visits here have,

of necessity, been rushed. But thistime, he'll have ample opportunity tosee many sights, and meet hosts offans.

Despite the fact that some of thethree months which have beenallotted to the movie will be spenton location in Sicily, Pat expects tobe resident in Britain for severalweeks-and even to have sufficient

time to undertake a few concerts andone-night stands here.

Title of the film, by the way, isMoment Of Happiness," and it

promises to give Pat one of hisbiggest acting' chances to date. Whichis something he really deserves-forall reperts reaching us from Americaindidate that he has recently madegreat strides as an actor.

Nat Hentoff informs me it willchange the Boone image somewhat, because he'll be involved in severallove and drinking scenes.

But as Pat says: " You can't re-main on top of this profession on aone-dimensional note."

In Hollywood, Pat has just com-pleted work on the remake of theclassic filmusical, " State Fair "-and I hear that the quality and depthof his acting startled everyone.

Pat didn't see the original, 15 -year -old version of the movie, so he'sbeen able to bring an entirely freshapproach to his role. He has alsobeen extremely pleased with theacting of his 19 -year -old sister, Judy, who makes her professional debut inthis picture.

I understand, incidentally, that" State Fair " is due in London sometime in the spring-by which timePat will virtually have completed hissubsequent role in " Moment OfHappiness."

KEITH FORDYCE forecastsanother

THERE'S another outright winner on the way for JohnLeyton and again it has been written for him by Geoff

Goddard. Titled " Son, This Is She," the song is similar inits boldness and the impressive style of the arrangement toJohn's last two hits, but apart from that John has got awayfrom his neo-Western style.

Song, singer and backing are allexcellent-perhaps it would havebeen just as good with a little less Strings and rhythm blend, to createecho, but that is a minor point. a compelling shuffle sound of aCongratulations to all concerned. sort I've never heard before. " So

" Six White Horses" is not so This Is Love " is a relaxed ballad.impressive, but it would have been very pleasant.a natural for Guy Mitchell five yearsago Label is HMV.

JESS CONRAD"Twist My Wrist " is the catchy

title on the new Decca release fromJess Conrad.

This stands every chance of beingthe first big hit in the twist idiombecause it has such a good tune-none other than our old friend " TheBridge Of Avignon."

" Hey Little Girl " is cute andcatchy, makes good flipside value.

ALLAN BRUCEHarry Robinson gets my vote for

the most original arrangement of theweek for the job he's done on" Unchained Melody " recorded onFontana by Allan Bruce.

So original that it's a bit startling

at first, but after a couple of spinsbecomes intriguing and definitely"more-ish."

NEIL SEDAKACould be another big hit on the

way for Neil Sedaka on RCA witha ditty called "Happy Birthday.

Sweet Sixteen."Great tune, strong

commercial lyric, beathas a happy lilt to it.Neil has group sup-port on the vocal andthere are strings inthe backing, too.

In a week ofseveral goodrecords, this one is

especially deserving of your earlyattention."Don't Lead Me On " is slow

and throbbing, effective as a whole, but verges on the laughable in oddplaces.

IG WINNER FOR JOHN LUTONBILLY FURY

ON FORMNEW Decca disc from Billy

Fury is " I'd Never FindAnother You." Medium -pacerock -cum -Latin beat runs behindthe most attractive melody.

A bouquet to Decca for retain-ing enough of the " Jealousy "'mood without repeating it enbloc. Every recommendation forthis one.

Flipover is " Sleepless Nights."Billy makes it sound better thanit did on the original Americandisc, but even so the song is onthe dreary side.

MARVELETTESA top hit over Stateside is Please

Mr. Postman," recorded by theMarvelettes.

Released here on Fontana. this isa straightforward slowish rockerfrom a youthful group that relies ona solo voice with the rest of themproviding background vocal support.

Scores a bullseye on the teenagetarget, especially good for jivingand jukeboxes." So Long Baby " is another slow

rocker, but whether the lead voicebelongs to a boy or to a girl . .

well, your guess is as good as mine. And the vocal support seems to geta trifle disorganised at times.

* POTTED POPS *PHIL TATE and his Orchestra

(Oriole) have waxed just about thecatchiest cha cha since Dorsey's " TeaFor Two," and it's " Over The Rain-bow." First class for the partyseason. Flip is called " I'm Just WildAbout Cha Cha." No prizes for guess-ing the tune ; another top -value side.

DUKE ELLINGTON (Philips) wrote, and with his orchestra has recorded.the theme music from the film " ParisBlues." A number that is both intel-ligent and entertaining. Covers bothsides of the disc, billed as Parts Iand II.

Title is " Doin' The Racoon,"and this, believe me, is a disc thatreally goes.If this sample is anything to go by.

Tratin is a great invention.Don't lose any time in getting this

one on your turntable ! " Chaka "is a Latin number, a bit too wasout to be pop.

FRANKIE AVALON" The Lonely Bit" gives Frankie

sung, arranged andpresented.

Credit for thearrangement goes toDick Reynolds, butFrankie, too, winsmy admiration fora vocal skill that Ididn't know he had.

"Sleeping Beauty"is pleasant, quiet

with an appealing melody and mood, but not memorable. On HMV.

GARY (U.S.) BONDSJust so's to be strictly impartial,

Gary (U.S.) Bonds follows up"School Is Out" with "School Is In."

Again we have the exciting " out-door " sound, but after two succes-sive discs that relied on beat ratherthan melody, this one needed moreattention given to the content ratherthan effect only.

" Trip To The Moon " is a spotof space-age nonsense with thereadily recognisable U.S.B. beat OnTop Rank.

JOHNNY MATHIS" My Kind Of Christmas " is

described for us on Fontana by'Johnny Mathis. A leisurely and

melodious ballad, happily free frommost of the well-worn gimmicks thatclutter up so manyChristmas discs.

In mood andapproach it's acompanion to " The,Christmas Song,'but I'm afraid not

quite as good - Mel Tormesstandard takes a lot of. beating !

Coupling from Johnny is " Christ-mas Eve,', again a smooth andmellow ballad.

TONY ORLANDO" Happy Times" is the follow-up

to " Bless You " as far as TonyOrlando is concerned. Medium pacewith a strong beat and a tune thatsoon sticks in the mind.

Not as good in the lyric as Tony'srecent hit, though.

Helen headingfor U.S. hit?

HELEN SHAPIRO'S " Walk-ing Back To Happiness"

has already shown action inBaltimore, New York, Pittsburghand Chicago.

Marty Meleher. Doris Day'shusband, is reportedly one of thebackers of the musical in whichMartha litaye will return toBroadway next fall.

Lyricist Alan Lerner willdouble as a producer for NBC-TV for the next five years. He'llhe in charge of a series of specialtelevision shows.

Sammy Davis and Nat Coleare working on plans for severalfilms which will .give opportuni-ties to Negro writers, actors anddirectors.

Janet Leigh has agreed toco-star with Frank Sinatra in" Manchurian Candidate."

According to columnist EarlWilson, a friend of the EddieFishers, the couple will settle inSwitzerland.

There's a story from thecoast that Peter Lawford is takingsinging lessons and may evenrecord for F ra n k Sinatra'sReprise.

Perry Como has made itclear to NBC that this will be hislast season of weekly shows.

Shots of Billy Fury wereseen in an NBC-TV show run bynews, commentator David Brink.ley that deplored rock 'n' roll.Brinkley says rock 'n' roll isdying. Record sales figures donot entirely support that view.

Sophie Tucker's recom-mendation for the actress to playher life story in a forthcomingfilm is Eydie Corm&

Nat Cole's Canadian tele-vision spectacular, " Wild IsLove," is the subject of negotia-tions between the CanadianBroadcasting Corporation andBritish television networks.

Doris Day will finish herautobiography next spring.

PETER POTTS of Chester -Le -Street, Co. Durham, writes:I think it is about time there wasa protest against Bobby Vee.

As I see it, Mr. Vee is not contentwith sounding like the Crickets'lead singer, but he also delights inusing their songs for his own singlereleases. First " Everyday " then" More Than I Can Say" and now" Love's Made A Fool Of You."

I can't see how he can be a failof the Crickets, as he claims to be,when he continually tries to stealtheir glory,

GEOFFREY HOWES of Brad -well, Gt. Yarmouth, writes:A big " Thank you " to BillyCotton for featuring the wonderfulMrs. Mills on his December 2BBC -TV programme.

Like him, I am sure we will behearing a lot from this plump andsmiling rhythm pianist. She's one ofthe most competent and confidentdiscoveries of recent years.

RICHARD GEDDIS of Larne,Northern Ireland, writes: It hasbeen reported that country -andwestern music is slowly gainingpopularity in this country.

Has. nobody realised that morethan half the r'n'r hits in the lastsix years or so have been corn-mercialised c -and -w? The EverlyBrothers are rated in the States ascountry artists. And many of theearly Presley hits were definitelycountry style (" I Forgot ToRemember," etc.).

THE Temperance Seven's third Parlophone single, coupling" Hard Hearted Hannah " with " Chili Bom Bom," wasn't

nearly as successful as so many people thought it would be.True, both sides entered the

charts-but only for a week. Con-sequently, some dismal cynicsbegan voicing the misguided theorythat the Seven were on the wayout.

But, as has so often beer, the casein the past, they were wrong. Rightnow, these worthy gentlemen of popmusic are once again in the hitparade limelight with their twenties -style revival of that old dancefavourite " The Charleston." Thedisc entered the charts last week atNo. 29 and has since climbed toNo. 16.

What a wonderful smack in theeye for the " Dismal Jimmies " whotheorised that the gimmick -appeal ofthe band couldn't last ! There wereeven some people who claimed that" You're Driving Me Crazy " wassimply a flash -In -the -pan hit, but thesubsequent success of " Pasadena "soon forced them to eat their words. How wrong can you be ?

The continued success of theband's discs tends to suggest thatthe popularity of the TemperanceSeven isn't just a passing fad.

" We certainly hope it isn't justa craze because we'd very muchlike to become a permanent part ofthe pop music scene." ProfessorBrian Innes, the band's drummer, told me recently.

" There's really no telling whetheror not our records will keep appear-ing in the hit parade," Innes wenton. " Naturally, we'd like more hits, but a miss doesn't upset us toomuch. You see, we've never thoughtin terms of being a hit paradeattraction.

" As I've said before, we playlargely for our own amusement, and even if interest in our discstailed off, we'd continue to playtogether.

One of the reasons behind theSeven's success is that the groupappeals to all age groups. Theirconcert audiences comprise pop andjazz fans as well as an increasingproportion of older folk. for whomthe group have a tremendous nostal-gic appeal

The band's engagements are veryvaried - ranging from concerts andjazz club dates to appearance's atprivate parties. Most of all, theyenjoy straightforward concert appear-ances.

People attend a concert strictly tolisten to the music, and we find thisvery satisfying because a lot ofthought is put into our music," ex-plained Innes. " In jazz clubs, onthe other hand, people' like to danceand talk, and what we are playingbecomes nothing more 'than hack -ground music,"

'Not Trad'Many people still have the idea

that the Temperance Seven are a trailjazz group. "In which case, they'retotally wrong," counters lanes, " Weare certainly not a trod group.

Trad is short for traditional jazz-the music played in New Orleansmany years ago. But it's not thekind of music we play. Our style isderived from the dance music thatwas popular in New York, and notNew Orleans; around 1925." he said,by way of clarifying the position.

Another contributory factor in thegroup's rise to nationwide promin-ence is the visual appeal, whichmakes the Seven ideal for TV shows.Deadpan, unsmiling and painfullydignified at all times, the nine mem-bers of the band are pastmastersthe difficult art of subtle, dryhumour that is implied rather thanforced.

" At the same time, we can't dis- Take their recent appearance inguise our happiness- at seeing our the annual Royal Variety Show, records in the best sellers, and we which the majority of us sawappreciate the support of disc fans," "second-hand " on our TV screens.he added. I realise that it's largely a clues -

declaresKEITH GOODWIN

tion of personal taste. but I thoughtthey stole the show with their droll, authentically out-of-date presentation.which was one of the funniest thingsI've seen on TV fora long time.

Such was the group's success onthe Royal Show that it influencedimpresario Bernard Delfont to signthe Seven for a major London varietyseason at the Palladium next year.It will be their second appearance atthe theatre, since they starred inATV's " Sunday Night At The Lon-don Palladium earlier this year.

It you enjoy the group's twenties -style music, you'll get a real kickout of the hand's first Parlophonealbum, " The Temperance Seven.1961 " which was issued just a monthor so ago Already, it has attainedbest seller status

" On the whole, we're verypleased with the way the albumturned out " remarked the be-spectacled professor. " It displaysour versatility and is nretty repre-sentative of our work."Whispering Paul MacDowell is

extensively featured on the LP (he'sings in French and German as wellas English --- there's versatility foryou !) and especially interesting arethe two tracks by the CarnationQuartet, a group within the hand ledby Paul.

A composition specially tailored tothe requirements of the Quartet hasbeen recorded (and filmed) for in-clusion in the forthcoming " It'sTrad, Dad " movie, and it will beissued on Parlophone, coupled with anew waxing by the full ensemble, tocoincide with the premiere nextyear.

One final point concerning thealbum-Professor tones wishes me todraw attention to Alan Swainston-Cooper's phonofiddle sole on "FallingIn Love Again " and his ownexciting solo on the musical chimesduring "That Certain Party."

Both solos, he assures us, are gemsof musical artistry !

Switch bringsRose luck

HOW many times has a change of recordlabel produced a change of luck for the

artist concerned? It's happened time and timeagain - and the latest personality to benefitfrom it is Rose Brennan, who makes herNME Chart debut this week with her veryfirst release on Philips.

Previously Rose has been featured on manyHMV releases, and one can only surmise thather arrival in the top table is purely coincidental, coming at this particular time. For she waxedsome exceptionally fine sides during her lengthystay with HMV and I've often felt that she hasbeen worthy of hit parade recognition.

Rose, like Matt. Monro, is aspecialist in steady, reliable, consistent artistry. But somehow orother, she never aspired to the topbracket, much as she deserved to doso.

Rose's talent is the greater be-cause she is also the composer ofher hit record, " Tall DarkStranger." It isn't the first song shehas written-a couple of years back,

she waxed one of her own numbers."Johnny Let Me Go" - but this

is very cleverly slanted towardscurrent hit demands.

It's in that galloping, rip-roaring,Western -flavoured idiom whichFrankie Laine once brought to ourattention-and which John Leyton

recently revived so successfully.Brennan is probably best -

He auditioned her on the phone, then invited her to come over toEngland for a fortnight's trial withhis band-and she's been with himever since! And NME readers werequick to recognise her ability when.in 1955, they voted her the nation'stop female dance band singer.

Besides singing with Joe, Rosefrom time to time undertakes vari-ous engagements as a soloist in herown right. She often plays cabaretdates in Ireland - and last year.when the Loss boys were on holiday, she went to America to play somesolo dates over there.

Her ambitionRose's childhood ambition was to

he a teacher, but it seems that showbusiness was in her blood, for whenshe was only a small child she hadquite a reputation in Dublin for thebackyard concerts which she used togive for her school chums!

She won a talent contest whenshe was 11, and this more or lessdetermined her future career. Whenshe left school, she began singingwith dance bands throughoutIreland-including a period with RoyFox orchestra. Then came the phonecall from Joe Loss, and her futurewas assured. DEREK JOHNSON.

JIM'S IN THESWIM AGAIN

-ON DISCS !JIMMY CRAWFORD, who

enters the NME Chart thisweek at No. 28 with " I LoveHow You Love Me," feels surethat being a keen swimmer hashelped considerably to develop hislung -power and breathing forsinging.

Thirteen years ago, when he was11, he decided that he must learnto swim. For some time he had beenfeeling self-conscious about hisinability, so he began to take les-sons, quickly proving such a keenand promising pupil that within a

year he was swimming for his homecity-Sheffield, going on to win thecounty championship, and laterchalking up a national junior record '

As as result of this he was chosenfor training at LoughboroughCollege, which specialises in physicaleducation. Then, when he was 18,he joined the RAOC and becameArmy butterfly and breast -strokechampion for two years running.

Several years later he began totake an active interest in singing. He recalls: I became interested invarious rock groups. I used to goalong and listen to them prettyregularly. Then one evening when I

ELVIS READS NME TOLEARN ABOUT FANS

ELVIS PRESLEY goes out of his way to keep an eagle eyeon all the pop ;music papers he can find .... Brenda Lee

is maturing into an all-round entertainer .... Jerry Lee Lewis'outstanding talent is the talk of America.

These three artists, whose 1962plans include projected visits toBritain (Presley for a charity con-cert if details can be arranged, and Brenda and Jerry for toursin the spring) had personal pen -portraits drawn for me this weekby my friend, Sharon Sheeley, currently visiting London fromCalifornia.

You will remember Sharon wasengaged to Eddie Cochran and thepair were on their way to LondonAirport in April, 1960, to fly toAmerica where they planned tomarry, when their car crashed nearBath, killing Cochran and injuringSharon, a songwriter and Hollywoodpersonality in her own right.

Now Sharon is in Britain for amonth's stay with her partner, attrac-tive blonde Jackie De Shannon. Inthe past eight months they haveclimbed into the top bracket as asongwriting team in the States.

Over lunch, Sharon and Jackiediscussed Elvis, who apparentlyseizes all the show business papersangled on pop music that he canfind (especially the NME, I wasassured) in an effort to find out whathis fans all over the world think ofhis latest films and records.

"He's a quiet, deep -thinking boy,"they both assured me. "Not the sortto rush into things, but still capableof having himself a really good time.Mind you, he lets his hair down onlywhen the serious business of work isover."

Of Brenda Lee (" Dum, Dum," thenumber which brought her back intothe limelight this summer, waspenned by Sharon and Jackie), theyhad this to say : " A fine artist whohas matured beyond recognition into

an entertainer. You can't compareher with your Helen Shapiro as thetwo have different styles."

Jerry Lee Lewis, who made a bigcomeback earlier this year with" What'd I Say," still has outstandingtalent according to Sharon andJackie, who saw him at a concertrecently.

"Just about everyone was onthe bill," they recalled. " Youname them-they were there. Butwhen Jerry Lee came out and didhis bit, the crowd went really wild." We still remember his act even

today. And without mentioningnames, we can tell you that somereally big artists who also were onthe bill, were very upset that thiscomparative unknown received somuch acclaim."

Action packedBoth Sharon and Jackie prophesy

an action -packed tour when Brendaand Jerry come to Britain in thespring. " When they get going, theaudiences will never know what hitthem I ' They exclaimed, laughing atthe thought of two such combustibleartists appearing together.

Incidentally, both girls were atDon and Phil Everly's " joining up "party in Hollywood, just before thebrothers went into the U.S. Marines.Quite a few top stars were there andthe party was a wild one, theyreport

What are Sharon and Jackie doingwhile they are here? "Going towork," they both assured me firmly. They write mainly in the early hoursof the morning, accompanying them-selves on guitar. So they have takena flat where they aren't likely todisturb people !

" We want to examine the possibi-lities of writing for British artistswho are always on the look -out formaterial-like Billy Fury and CliffRichard," they revealed.

Sharon is going to make her discbow as a singer while she's here, too Jack Good plans to supervisethe session, with probable release onDecca in the New Year.

His sister, Jeanette, was also atthe party. and when he asked herwhat she thought of his singing, she

gave a frank sisterly opinion: " Notbad at all."

Later in the everting, anotherfriend, who led an amateur group, suggested that he should do somemore vocalising." This was the encouragement I

needed," says Jimmy. " I formedmy own group. We called ourselvesthe Coasters and within a year wewere tops in Sheffield.

" We got more ambitious andbegan to branch out. When every-thing started to go well, I hadthoughts of turning professional."

Jimmy and his Coasters appearedin Sheffield on the same bills asVince Eager. Laurie London, DavidMacbeth and other stars, but theyfelt that the place where they wouldbe most likely to get their big breakwas London

So they arranged a booking at theTwo Cs coffee bar, Soho, where somany of Britain's young stars have'been discovered. There, they weresoon " discovered " by Roy Tuveyand Morris Sellar. Under theirguidance Jimmy and his group, now renamed the Ravens, recordedseveral songs and sent the tape off toColumbia recording manager NorrieParamor. Since then they haven'tlooked back! 10 NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS Friday, December S. 1961

TO the man in the street, a one-night -stand tour is no more

than a string of concerts takingin towns as far apart as Bath andBerwick. But to a pop musicstar, it means much, much more, and the never-ending road andrail journeys that make touringsuch an arduous business arealways more than worthwhile.

" One -fighters are exhausting,"declared a tired but happy KarlDenver at the end of his secondconcert itinerary within two monthsat the week -end. But they're a

'Jim Reeves wins by breaking the rulesFOR those who are under the impression that country-and-western

music has necessarily to be performed in medium -paced beattempo, Jim Reeves' recordings provide the perfect answer. Jim isessentially a country -styled singer-yet his impact upon the pop musicworld has been angled exclusively on slow, sentimental ballads.

He first came to our attention lastyear with his highly successful " He'll

BY BRUCE CHARLTONHave To Go" waxing, which toppedthe quarter -million mark in sales inBritain. Now, after three or four an exception to a rule. For amongfollow-up releases which failed to the songwriting fraternity, a shortmake the hit parade grade, he's back and snappy title is generally con -in the running once again. sidered the first step to success. But

Title of Jim's latest hit also proves defying this principle, Jim comes

wonderful experience, and it wasjust great coming face to face withso many of the people who haveput my records in the charts."

Touring is still a relatively newexperience for Karl, who was un-known a few months ago. But thesuccess of " Marcheta " and cur-rently " Mexicali Rose " has estab-lished him as a nationally popularstar, and his appearances in the" Star Spangled Nights " package

CONNIE FRANCISbrings you a beautiful ballad

constituted his first real encounterwith the general public.

His opinion of package shows ?" Love 'em," he told me. " Every-body in the show was wonderful andso friendly. And when you'reworking with friends, you just can'tgo wrong. I liked all the fellows inthe show, specially Billy Fury. Igot to know him quite well andhe's a real great guy.

" Because of the nature of thepackage, audiences were composedmainly of youngsters who are strictrock fans," Karl went on. " Mymusic isn't rock 'n' roll, so it was akind of challenge to try to get myparticular style across to theseaudiences. Quite honestly, I thinkwe were successful.

" When I did African songs likeSimba ' and other off -beat items,

they didn't exactly know what itwas all about, but they enjoyedit just the same."During the two tours, I met

quite a lot of the fans personally.I found them very intelligent andtalkative. We discussed my musicquite a lot, and a lot of fans weregenuinely interested in the originsof much of my off -beat material,"Karl pointed out.

No changeSuccess hasn't changed this rugged

ex -merchant seaman with thephenomenal vocal range. Admittedly,he is earning more now than everbefore in his life. But the mostimportant outcome of his suddenrise to prominence is simply " beingable to present my kind of musicto the public and seeing themappreciate it."

There's a good chance that theKarl Denver Trio will visit Americanext year. "I hope the tripmaterialises because I'd love to gothere. It would be a wonderful wayof picking up new material andenlarging our repertoire," Karlemphasised.

But bearing in mind that Karlsings a lot of country-and-westernsongs, which are already nationallypopular there, won't a trip to theU.S. be akin to carrying coals toNewcastle ?" Not at all," countered Karl.

" Marcheta ' was issued in theStates just recently and I understandit's doing very well. And anyway,if the trip works out, I shall besinging a lot of songs that arenothing to do with c -and -w -Chinese, Arabic and even Swahilitunes, for example."

Karl's first Decca LP "Wimoweh,"will be issued here today (Friday)and will be released in the Stateswithin the next few months. LondonRecords (Decca's American outlet)feel that the title tune, an oldAfrican chant, has hit potential.

Vocal versatility, it seems, is thekey to Karl's success. He's far tooadventurous and progressive to getstuck in a rut, and his natural talentand enthusiasm should ensure thathe remains at the top for a longtime. KEITH GOODWIN.

along with a mouthful like " You'reThe Only Good Thing ThatHappened To Me "-and breaks intothe top table on the strength of it !

It's a catchy, nostalgic ballad, ideally suited to Jim's intimate style-which, incidentally, always remindsme of Tennessee Ernie Ford inquieter mood. But although thesong is almost certainly new to you,it isn't new in country circles.

It was actually written someseven years ago by a well-knownc -and -w personality, Jack Toombs. And the chances are that Jimwould never have thought of

recording this number for singlerelease. It was actually waxed forinclusion in his "The Intimate JimReeves " album, and RCA decidedto extract it from the LP to try itsluck as a single. Pretty shrewdjudgment I

When Jim sang this tune, hisinstant reaction was to dedicate it tohis wife, Mary White, whom hemarried some 14 years ago, for sheis his lucky charm.

Fate had been unkind to Jim untilMary came along-his father diedwhen he was a baby, he had theunpleasant experience of seeing oneof his eight elder brothers killed bylightning, and a leg injury which hesustained ruined a promising baseballcareer.

But as soon as he met and marriedMary, things started going right fora change. Indeed, one day when they

were out driving in the car, theydecided on a sudden impulse to settlein the town of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Within a matter of days, Jimhad landed himself as job as anannouncer at the local radiostation. This was the lucky break that was

to be the first stepping -stone to hissinging and recording career. So nowonder there's so much sincerity inhis voice, as he sings his currenthit title-with his wife in mind!
