Subject: Adding Value to Materials through Irradiation with Neutrons Duration: 2007 - 2008Results:- Carrying out the experiments on irradiation of Topaz stone samples with neutrons in the rotary rack of the Dalat research reactor with irradiation time from 30 hours to 150 hours.

- After heat processing, the such Topaz irradiated by gamma in Co-60 irradiator with the dose rate of 25 kGy/h. The total dose was (60-70)x103 kGy.- The results obtained show that the combination irradiation of neutron and gamma permits to reduce the irradiation of neutrons to 50 hours, so the radioactivity in the samples decreased, about ~0,2 Sv/h/cara.- Reduction of a significant decay time.

Advantages:

Neutron irradiation and combining with other methods: heat processing and gamma irradiation

Disadvantages:

Neutron irradiation of Topaz

- with limited dimension (<3cm in diameter)

- without Cd shielding (in and out of the core)

Advantages: - The production and distribution of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals have been practical experienced since 1984- Applications of nuclear techniques in medicine have been widely developed in Vietnam - Carrying out 3 national projects on nuclear medicine centre with Cyclotron-PET and 1 national project on plan of a new production line ( I-131 ) .

Subject: Establishing a Benchmark for Assessing the Radiological Impact of Nuclear Power Activities on the Marine Environment in the Asia-Pacific region Duration: 2007 - 2008Results: - Collecting of marine environment samples at 2 selected sites of NinhThuan Province in 2008: Sea water samples, Sea water samples(900 liters/site), Sea sediments (3-5 kgs/site), Sea foods (5-10 kgs/site), Seaweeds (10 kgs/site).

- Quantitative analysis of radionuclides concentration of the samples.

Advantage:Support of a national project on “Assessment of Marine Environmental Radioactivity Status for two selected sites of Nuclear Power Plant in the near future at Ninhthuan Province”, from 2008-2009.

Disadvantage: Financial shortages

Subject: Radiation Processing Applications for Health and the Environment Duration: 2007 - 2008Results: - Degradation of natural polysaccharide such as chitosan, alginate to prepare plant growth promoter and protector for agricultural use, and fractionation oligochitosan for medical use.

- Preparation a novel composite material from the copolymers of bentonite and hydrophilic monomer for waste water treatment of natural rubber processing factory.

- Preparation copolymers for enhance of oil recovery this research direction was cooperated with the Joint Venture Vietsovpetro company to ratify the research contract.

Duration: 2006 - 2009Results:Collecting and analysis radionuclides and elements of soil and sediment samples at 7 areas in South of Vietnam:Ganh Hao, Dinh An, Vung Tau, Phan Thiet, Nha Trang, Tra Vinh, Thac Mo.

Advantage:

Vietnam government is interesting on the Problem of coastal environment protection

Disadvantage:

Associated nuclear and other technologies for general research of the problem of change in the coastal environment are limited in Vietnam.



Co-operation in the Future

Projects:- Enlargement of researches for application in petroleum industry

- Development of nano size materials by radiation processing.

- Development and commercialization of the super water absorbent materials for use in agriculture and environment treatment.

- Development of heavy metal absorbent for environment treatment

- Commercialization of the plant growth promotor

- Support of research facilities from RCA and member countries

- Support of human resources in general and specialists in the related fields

- Exchange information and experiences between RCA and member countries

- Establishment of the National Marine Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring Network.

- Enlargement of the projects of environment pollution, water source pollution, food pollution.

- Improvement of the skills and expertise of nuclear technologists

- Strengthening of ‘Distance assisted training'

Co-operation in the Future Training Course/ Workshop/ Fellowship (con’t):

- Training or Expert on applications of nuclear and isotopic techniques in identifying sources of marine pollution.

- Fellowship /Training/ Scientific visit on GRP and GMP

- Workshop/course on production and QA of therapy radio isotopes under GMP and GRP roles

- Workshop/course on techniques for labeling of biological compounds like peptides, antibodies and proteins used in radiopharmaceuticals
