English Department Overview

In high-school English Language Arts, students read works of literature and informational texts with a critical eye. Students will read classic and contemporary works from various eras, cultures, and world views.

The Thousand Oaks English Department prepares learners for the 21st century by developing the needed skills to make successful advancements in an ever-challenging and changing world.

With 16 highly-trained and diverse members of the English faculty, your student will obtain a valuable, hands-on, first-rate education in the discipline of English.

Simply put, our English teachers LOVE what they do and your students will feel that when they walk into our classrooms!

ELA Skills Preparation

Using Common Core State Standards, we prepare our students for the 21st century by focusing on the following skills:

● Read and analyze rich and challenging texts (with support and independently)

● Cite Evidence to support opinions, analysis and research● Summarize a text and analyze theme and central ideas ● Outline arguments and specific claims in texts● Evaluate reasoning to determine if it is valid or faulty● Analyze an author’s purpose, use of language and how it

affects the meaning and tone of a text● Develop writing skills for short and longer purposes

● Use technology to produce and publish writing● Strengthen language and grammar use● Initiate and participate in whole group discussion and

responding thoughtfully to diverse perspectives● Listen and evaluate speaker’s point of view, reasoning

and use of evidence● Give well-organized presentations, expressing

information, research findings and supporting evidenceclearly, concisely, and logically
