INTRODUCTION Kia ora and welcome to the Rotorua Girls High School future pathways information booklet. This booklet has been compiled to give both students and their parents help to make informed decisions about possible career choices that are available for students today. While we have endeavoured to ensure that all the information in here is correct and up to date, with the nature of tertiary institutions, there are always new courses being made available. This booklet has been broken into different sections:

School Careers department and what we have to offer here

Website links for careers information

University Entrance – what is needed

Specific University and course Entrance requirements

Polytechnics and other tertiary information

Armed Forces information

CAREERS DEPARTMENT At Rotorua Girls High School we are fortunate enough to have a Careers Advisor and a Careers assistant on hand to help guide students to making future career decisions. Throughout the year students are able to make appointments to have one on one interviews with the careers advisor. Further to this we now have the CareersZone room that is accessed through the library. The CareersZone room has hard copy resources about all the universities, polytechnics, tertiary providers in New Zealand. This is also a great place to find out about any overseas exchanges that are available and organisations that offer overseas GAP year programmes. Students are able to use this room at intervals and lunchtimes or during their study breaks if they are a year 13 student. We also have the Gateway programme that is offered to all year 12 and 13 students. Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It’s a great opportunity to blend school and study with workplace learning and experience. Learning is assessed in the workplace counting towards national qualifications.

How to calculate your “Rank” score

You will be allocated a rank score based on your best 80 credits at level 3 or higher over a maximum

of five approved subjects, weighted by the level of achievement attained in each set of credits. If

you achieve fewer than 80 credits, the rank score will be based on those credits you have gained at

level 3 over a maximum of five approved subjects, weighted by the level of achievement attained in

each set of credits.

The rank score will be calculated by awarding the following points for up to 24 credits in each

approved subject taken at level 3.

The maximum rank score is 320.

Excellence = 4 points

Merit = 3 points

Achieved = 2 points

Credits obtained in any required subjects do not have to be among the best 80 credits used for

ranking purposes.

NCEA level 3 credits achieved in previous years may be counted towards the 80 best credits used for

ranking purposes.

You are strongly recommended to take achievement standards as preparation for university study.
