...written in the far-reaching shadow of the Covid19 pandemic which has changed our lives so profoundly. I wrote most of this before 23 March, so I will leave it as it is, as we are no less proud of our work now than we were then. However, we do need to recognise that much will have changed when we do, eventually, come out of the other side of this cloud of uncertainty. We don’t know exactly how the pandemic will affect our ways of working – for better or worse – however, we do know that we, along with our friends in the SDN and HFMA, will find the best new ways to continue to support the development of the NHS finance function, by working with you and all those who want to make our teams the best that they can be for our patients and service users.2019/20 saw Future-Focused Finance go from strength to strength, as we adapted to the changes brought about by the coming together of NHS England and NHS Improvement. In this report you’ll read about the amazing growth we’ve seen in the number of Value Makers, FACEs and organisations gaining accreditation. We know that this growth represents the commitment across the service to developing ourselves and improving the service we offer to support the good health of our population.

The year saw us bring our first Aspiring Finance Leaders programme to a conclusion, with great feedback from all those involved. Before the pandemic hit, we had launched our third Talent Pool intake, in January 2020, working with colleagues from the Leadership Academy’s Aspire Together teams to streamline the number of talent options available to senior staff. We have had to temporarily freeze the recruitment process, but we will re-start it as soon as we possibly can. We ran our first ever Breaking Diversity Barriers programme for staff who identify as having one of the protected diversity characteristics. We received truly humbling feedback from this programme, with delegates telling how what they had learned had genuinely changed their lives, both in work and at home.

Continuing the diversity theme, we ran a Celebration of Diversity event in China Town, London in November,

which brought together staff from a diverse range of backgrounds and organisations to celebrate our differences. The event was an absolute highlight of the year, with great feedback from those who were there.

Another event that proved successful in 2019 was our third Value Maker annual conference, VMAC2019, which saw over 150 Value Makers come together in September to share best practice, develop professional links and strengthen friendships. The Value Maker network continues to grow at a fantastic rate and is the absolute jewel in FFF’s crown in terms of the social movement that has grown off the back of the initiative.

Working with colleagues from HFMA’s Healthcare Costing for Value Institute, we continued to develop our Best Possible Value (BPV) and Engagement, Value, Outcome (EVO) programmes. We published our summary of the great results achieved at our four EVO pilot sites during the year and are now looking to role the programme out to other organisations across the NHS when the time is right. We also continued to develop the work around our Systems Maturity Toolkit and now have a number of organisations actively engaged in a development group looking to build on the existing model.

The most popular programmes that we run and continue to be are our ‘Demystifying NHS Finance’ events, at which we introduce NHS staff from a range of professional backgrounds to the weird and wonderful world of NHS finance. These events are always over-subscribed and always get excellent feedback from participants. We will pick these up again as soon as we can.

As we turn to 2020/21 and beyond, we will be re-launching the ‘Designing Our Future’ project that we trailed extensively before the lock down. We will be reviewing the way in which FFF is governed and administered. More news will follow soon. However, one thing is clear: we will continue to drive for the very best in development practice for NHS finance staff, supported by senior finance staff and relying on input from everyone across the finance family. Thank you for your support so far: we couldn’t have achieved anything without your fantastic support.

Dear ColleagueHere is our second annual report...

Doing more to understand and challenge the barriers to achieving diversity in senior roles has been a key area of focus in 2019/20 and is set to continue next year. Find out more.

Many are recognising the value of being able to evidence the quality of their financial support and commitment to development by working toward accreditation. This year has seen a 77% increase in the number of organisations accredited with increases across all three levels. View them here.

We’ve helped people develop their skills and networks with our events and programmes, as well as by working closely with our colleagues in the staff development network (SDN). The huge increases in the numbers joining our FACE and VM networks give evidence of the enthusiasm and commitment of the finance community in spreading good practice and helping other deliver quality and value through better understanding of finance. You can read more here.

Shaping the future of financeOver the last 12 months we have discussed how to shape the future of the finance function which resulted in the “Designing Our Future” report and the start of the national finance conversation. Read it here. including what happened when Simon Worthington, FFF SRO and Director of Finance at Leeds Teaching Hospitals worked with the East of England and South East Coast regions to increase engagement.

“If we can truly involve all 16,000+ finance professionals in co-designing our future, we will be far better placed to meet the challenges we face as a society and the pressures on the NHS.”

Julian Kelly, Chief Financial Officer, NHS England and NHS Improvement

Diversity, Inclusion & EquityIn 2018 we launched our diversity work programme with the underlying aim of achieving equality of opportunity. In July 2019 we held a diversity forum which explored the practical actions that can make a difference and drive positive change. Building on that forum the Diversity report sets out why diversity and inclusion are important, we consider the current position and what actions can be taken to make a difference.

We’ve also produced an animation to make it easy to share some simple messages with your whole team and now produce a regular bulletin so you can stay updated with the latest news of events and tools that can you help you and your teams to find ways to embrace inclusion as a way of improving what you do.

This year we launched our first ever development programme for finance staff from under- represented groups at director level. Our Breaking Diversity Barriers course focused on building confidence and skills that enabled delegates to be their authentic selves and empower them to use this to progress their careers. It ran for three days from Dec 2019 - Feb 2020 and 18 participants from across the country

attended. We were blown away by the enthusiasm from each participant throughout the three days and were delighted to receive outstanding feedback following the close of the course. From this, a new network of fantastic and talented individuals has been formed and we are excited to see their careers develop. In London this year, the Going Beyond Programme was launched by the London Talent Board with the support of FFF and SDN. The first cohort have started on the programme and each has a director level sponsor from the region. We’ll be using the feedback from this cohort to refine the programme and support other regions in developing their local programme.

To support individuals we also have the Sponsorship Programme which is a two year programme providing career sponsorship for high potential staff groups who are under-represented at director level within NHS Finance.

“The course took me on a very personal journey and required me to look within myself and find my authenticity. I wasn’t quite sure what this would mean, but it is has helped me unlock the potential inside me that had been suppressed for a long time.”

The 2019 annual Value Maker conference saw 187 Value Makers come together to share learning and connect with each other. The programme received excellent feedback, in particular around the learning and topics shared during the infamous best pracitce marketstalls. Read about them here.

Our FACEs have had a really busy year - between them logging over 1200 teaching hours! We ran 7 x Finance for Clinicians events and each one was oversubscribed. This really reflects that our clinical teams are interested in better understanding finance and working with us to deliver best value. Access the presentations and briefings on the FFF website here.

“Thank you to everyone at FFF from UCLH. Yesterday’s Finance4Clinicians seminar gave real insight and will help us transform our service” Jonathan Hearsey, Clinical Director, University College London Hospitals NHS FT

We are delighted to be able to report a 214% increase in the number of value makers and a 69% increase in the number of Finance & Clinical Educators (FACE).

This award is now in its fifth year and recognises commitment to the work of the Future-Focused Finance programme and acknowledges an individual who has, as a volunteer, made a significant personal contribution to the strategic aims of FFF.

The Future-Focused Finance award for 2019 was awarded to Ken Godber from Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Ken is one the most active members of the Value Maker network and the award recognises his commitment to the FFF programme and a personal contribution to its strategic aims. In his role as FFF joint regional

lead in the East Midlands, Ken has spent many hours cajoling local colleagues to sign up as Value Makers and raising awareness of the benefits of FFF’s Towards Excellence Acreditation programme. He ensures that staff development remains high on the agenda and that links between FFF, HFMA and colleagues in the Skills Development Network in the region remain strong. He said: ‘It is an absolute honour to get this award. I have been behind FFF since it started and in the East Midlands we are progressing well with the agenda. We have a good group of 120 value makers and I am keen to encourage more East Midlands organisations to achieve the accreditation.’

Celebrating our championsFrom the outset we have wanted to make all resources including events, networks and tools free to access and to make use of all types of media to appeal to different preferences and audiences. We thank all our contributing bodies for their financial support and we try to make sure that as many people as possible can benefit.

The FFF programme was funded a total of £1,338,000 for 2019/20.
