annual report 2017

CAPE engages students, inspires teachers, and demonstrates impact by

bringing visual and performing arts into classrooms in low income, high

needs schools across Chicago.

our vision

CAPE increases students’ academic success, critical thinking, and creativity

through research-based, arts-driven education.

our mission

CAPE inspires students to be passionate about education by weaving visual and performing arts into their classroom lessons. To bring academic subjects to life through art, we partner teaching artists with Chicago public school teachers to develop original, creative lesson plans. These lessons integrate music, dance, drama, digital art, video, and photography into classrooms; they also expand learning beyond school walls intocommunity sites like art studios, performance halls, and exhibit spaces.

CAPE’s unique approach to enhancing education through the arts better engages students, improves their understanding of content, and boosts their grades. CAPE commissions long-term research to demonstrate how integrating art into education continually improves students’ criticalthinking, self esteem, and confidence.

our work

project spotlight:liberty’s promiseLiberty’s Promise/La Promesa de Libertad was a project driven by students in a CAPE after-school program at Telpochcalli Elementary. Concerned about the political climate and its impact on their families and the larger Little Village community, young students worked with teacher Mary Beth Werner and Teaching Artist Juan-Carlos Perez to explore ideas of inclusion, exclusion, liberty, and identity.

In response, the students created a detailed large-scale collage inspired by the Statue of Liberty. They then asked their families and community members to create their own protest posters to share on social media using #LibertysPromise and #LaPromesaDeLibertad. The campaign soon inspired and empowered students and educators at other schools, and was featured in an exhibition at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This report's cover art shows close-up details of the collage.

At Hibbard Elementary, Teacher Julia Reyes and Teaching Artist Sanaz Sohrabi worked with 4th grade students to explore the social, political, and economic factors that are driving immigration around the globe, including situations personally experienced by the school’s refugee students.

The students conducted interviews with family members and neighbors in their diverse Albany Park neighborhood, and used photography and collage to create a moving series of large-scale artworks depicting the reasons and the ways that people around the world are fleeing their homes in search of safety and freedom.

project spotlight:the overton projectIn 2016, students from Daniel Hale Williams Preparatory School of Medicine worked on a powerful project that considered what to do with a nearby closed Chicago public school, Overton Elementary. Guided by Williams Prep Art and Design Teacher Phil Cotton, teaching artist Margy Stover, and CAPE EducationDirector Scott Sikkema, these high school students took on the challenge of re-conceiving and re-purposing spaces within the closed Overton school building, while asking: What is school? What is the relationship between school and community? How do public spaces contribute to and create community? How can we build community with our ideas and work? These questions generated a beautiful series of site-specific artinstallations and proposals for community-focused repurposing of the empty building.

In 2017, the Overton Project lived on and our students’ dreams for their community reached broad new audiences as a well-attended featured event of the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Open House Chicago, where visitors toured the school, engaged with CAPE student art like the piece pictured below, andparticipated in community engagement projects in and around the building. We look forward to seeing what’s in store for the Overton building in the future.
