GEOGRPAHY TRIP TO BEMPTON CLIFFS

Year 9 went on a geography field-

trip to Flamborough Head and

Bempton Cliffs. It gave the pupils a

great opportunity to study the

formation and erosion of

landscapes for themselves, whilst

also having a fun time at the

beach.

HANCOCK MUSEUM CULTURE TRIP

A group of pupils went to

Newcastle on a day out: a cultural

experience that combined a visit to

the Hancock Museum, which

houses a fascinating array of

exhibits – ranging from the

prehistoric to the artefacts of

Ancient Egypt.

This is just a selection of the many ways that we enrich the

learning of our pupils. Take a look at our website for even

more information and stories about life at Fyling Hall School.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

I still cannot believe that I have come to the end of my first year as

Headmaster at Fyling Hall, and I would like to thank you all for the support

you have given me this year. Sitting and thinking about school life since our

last edition of ‘Fyling Hall Matters’ made me realise how much has happened

since Christmas. I feel a great sense of pride reflecting on the selection of

activities that are contained in this edition, as they clearly reflect our vibrant

and proactive community where achievement is celebrated. I hope that

everyone enjoys the summer holiday and returns ready to challenge

themselves further in September.

Steven Allen

FROM THE HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

We are given the opportunity to take part in so many activities and

experiences outside of the classroom at Fyling Hall and “Activities Week” is a

great example of this. Going to a sculpture park, reciting poetry, orienteering

on the ‘Big Walk’ and “It’s a Knock Out” team challenges are just a few of the

experiences that all of us were able to take part in during the last week of

term. Experiences such as these encourage us to learn, grow and to forge

strong friendships and they take place throughout the school year! As I move

on to pastures new I will miss every single thing about the school: the staff,

the pupils, the lessons, the food, the familial feel of the place.

George Reeves

Everyone always asks me what my favourite moment here is, and honestly I

don’t have a specific moment. I have loved every single second of my eight

years here. However, I have always loved coming back after the summer,

getting ready to see all my friends, and looking towards the fun times ahead.

This was particularly the case in September, when I had the honour of

returning as head girl. I was right to look forward to the role: it has given me

the opportunity to develop as a person but it has also given me the

opportunity to see how much this small school offers to its pupils, and I have

loved being one of them.

ROSE GARDEN CHARITY MUSIC CONCERT

Fyling Hall played host to a fabulous charity music concert which was

organised in aid of the victims of the earthquake in Nepal. The concert

was held in our beautiful walled ‘Rose Garden’, and the magical mood of the

evening was only magnified by the atmospheric and moody weather. The line

up included: Miles Pascall,

Tapsalteeri’O, George Husband, Phil

Moore, Natasha Graham and The

Curse and the Amplifier. The concert,

which sold around 200 tickets, as

well as various other charity

activities that have been organised

by Fyling Hall’s pupils over the last

few months, helped to raise an

impressive £2804 for the victims of

the Nepal earthquake.

ARTHUR AND OLLIE COMPLETE 42 MILE WALK

They managed to raise an impressive £350 for the Nepal earthquake tragedy. Well done boys!

PUPILS RAISE £533 FOR “HELP FOR HEROES”

On Saturday 14th March, a group of dedicated Fyling Hall students made

the journey to Catterick Garrison in order to bag pack in aid of Help for

Heroes. We decided it would be more meaningful to pack bags in a

military area, as many of our children are from forces families. Over the

course of the day we managed to raise £533.39 for charity Help for

Heroes !

FUN RUN SUCCESS!

On 12th February, the school

organised a non-uniform day and

fun run to raise money for the

chosen charities this term –

namely the Cleveland Mountain

Rescue Team and Roi the Orphan

Elephant. The whole school took

part, with the juniors starting the

run at 14.15. At 14.30 it was the

time for the seniors to run. They

set off in earnest after a pre-run

briefing from Mr Coates and the

phrase ‘keep to the left’ ringing

in their ears. By 16.15 it was all

over. Once Mr Edge and Ms

Hornung had checked all the

race cards it was announced that

the students had covered a total

of 669 miles – an amazing

achievement.

YEAR 10’S CHARITY WEEK

When it was Year 10’s turn to think

up imaginative ways to raise money

for charity, their idea was to sell

break time sugary treats. Cloudy lem-

onade was on sale early on in the

week, followed by a chocolate foun-

tain. The fact that the sunshine came

out only improved sales! Year 10

raised over £80 for their chosen chari-

ty “Zoe’s Place”, a local hospice for

sick children.

FYLING HALL AWARDED DUKE OF

EDINBURGH LICENSE

As an enthusiastic supporter for outdoor

education, Fyling Hall School was

delighted to invite Sue Emmerson from

the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

organisation, to present a certificate

confirming that the school has now

become a directly licensed centre.

6TH FORM ART STUDENTS

VISIT MIMA

Yesterday the sixth form art

students paid a visit to

Middlesbrough Institute of

Modern Art (MIMA), to see an

exhibition that came from the

Tate in St Ives. The students

thought the journey was well

worth the effort. “It is great to be

able to see art work of this quality

on our doorstep and not have to

go to London’s Tate modern” said

Charlotte McAdam.

NATIONAL THEATRE’S

“TREASURE ISLAND”

A group of pupils were taken to

the Stephen Joseph Theatre to

watch a live screening of the

National Theatre’s “Treasure

Island”. It was a fabulous

opportunity to watch such a high

quality production of one of our

great literary classics and the

children were very impressed

with the swashbuckling action

and incredible set.

ICE TO BE BACK!

Pupils were given at least two

opportunities to enjoy a day of ice

skating, bowling and cinema this term.

The popular

termly trip

always goes

down well with

all pupils, both

boarders and

dailies, as they

can relax after

a hard week of learning!

SALTBURN MUSIC FESTIVAL

WINNERS

Three recorder players from Junior

School went to Saltburn Music Festival

this term. Jeremy Normanton, Arthur

Watson and Ruby Wormald performed

their pieces in the wonderful acoustic of

Saltburn Methodist Church. The

adjudicator, Mr Philip Dewhurst,

congratulated all the young musicians on

their performances and awarded 1st

place to Ruby and 2nd place to Jeremey.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Rain, wind and midges on midges could not stop our pupils from performing

in the final drama production of the year. Pupils from Years 7-11 performed

‘Alice in Wonderland’ in the school’s beautiful Rose Garden, to celebrate the

150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s publication. Each year group took a

section of the story to perform and created their own piece using a variety of

dramatic styles. The

performance was

accompanied by music from

our very own Zoot Party, the

Senior Vocal Group and

Ceilidh Band, who brought the

whole cast together for a

rousing dance to end.

LILI’S WRITING

SUCCESS

Budding author

and Year 6 pupil

Lilli Walsh will see her work in print

this Easter. Lilli’s mini saga, “When

Rudolf Broke His Leg!” was entered

into a Young Writers’ national writing

competition just before Christmas,

and has been selected by the judges

for publication in “Once Upon a Time

– Yorkshire”, which is due to be

published in March.

ART EXHIBITION AND MUSIC RECITAL

The art department hosted an open evening showcasing the AS and A level

pupils’ art work. Both the art room and The Barn were displaying the

students’ work beautifully, with sketchbooks explaining the story and ideas

behind their final pieces. Parents and friends came to support the pupils and

feedback was greatly appreciated. Later that evening, our music department

hosted a classical recital where Matthias Fiedler (Year 10 student from

Germany) performed a programme on the French Horn and Cello.

PAINTBALLING MADNESS!

The expedition travelled to Yarm, to

fight the wilderness and horrific

rain, in the hope of getting a shot on

Ms Walker. They played five games

in total and had lunch all courtesy of

Battlezone Paintball, before it was

time for the hardened bunch of

warriors to return home, bruised,

battered and telling tales of daring

guerrilla paint war.

SWIMMING GALA

Fyling Hall’s Junior

School came

together at the

Whitby Leisure

Centre for our annual

swimming gala. Students from Year 1

right through to Year 6 competed in a

multitude of swimming events

tailored to their abilities, in front of a

boisterous crowd.

FAIRFAX HOUSE

Year 8 enjoyed an educational visit

to the exquisite, fully furnished,

Georgian townhouse of Lord Fairfax,

in York, as part of their history

education this term.

PUPILS BRAVE WINTERY

EVENING FOR 5KM RUN

On a cold, crisp winter’s evening,

under the light of a waning gibbous

moon, an intrepid group of runners

set off on the inaugural Fyling Hall

night run. Leaving from Ravenscar,

with an air of trepidation, they set

off for their 5km run to Boggle Hole,

along the old railway line. Guided

only by the light of head torches,

and the moon’s reflection from the

snowy, slippery surface beneath

their feet, they ran with enthusiasm

and marvelled at the view over the

sea.

OUR JUNIORS ‘SPEAK OUT’!

A group of eloquent and persuasive

Year 6s arrived at the Saxonville

Hotel in Whitby to compete at the

annual ‘Speak Out’ competition. A

public speaking contest held every

year by the Rotary Club, Speak Out

tests its participants on their powers

of persuasion and oratory skills. .

Scarborough. It was a packed and

very enjoyable afternoon, and the

pupils came away with lots of great

advice about how to keep

themselves safe when faced with a

wide variety of different scenarios.

FYLING HALL CELEBRATES THE

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE

The anticipation for the Junior School had been

great and the children were excited to say the

least! Not only were they able to get an

excellent view of the race, but they also had a

party before and after the race, thanks to the

generosity of Mr and Mrs Harrison. Hotdogs

and home-made muffins were consumed in

vast quantities!

LIFE SAVING LESSONS FOR YEAR 6

Year 6 pupils visited Scarborough Hospital

as part of the Injury Minimization

Programme for Schools (I.M.P.S.). During

the visit they had the opportunity to tour

the Emergency Department and to

familiarise themselves with the hospital

and equipment used. They learned about

accident prevention and basic first aid

procedures, and they also taught valuable

life-saving skills.

FORM 2 FIND THEIR GREEN FINGERS

Green-fingered pupils from

Form 2 have been busy in

Science with compost and

flowers, preparing tubs and

trugs for a lovely spring display

at the Junior School. They are

also learning to grow and eat

their greens, as their next

planting project involves

pumpkins, peas and radishes!

NEW LEARNING SUPPORT AND EAL

OFFICIAL OPENING

A great evening was enjoyed by all who attended

the official opening of the ‘new’ Learning Support

and EAL Department. The highlight of the

evening was the unveiling, cutting and eating of

the fabulous celebratory cake which was made

by Charlotte Harris for her Level 2 Higher

Project.

“DAISY HARDY” POETRY RECITAL

COMPETITION

During the final week Fyling Hall held its

annual ‘Daisy Hardy’ poetry recital

competition. The recitals were the culmination

of several weeks worth of work and lessons

for Years 7 to 10 pupils, where they explored

poetic techniques, their own interpretations of

a selection of poems, the context in which

they were written, before finally choosing

which poem to memorise and prepare in

readiness for the day of the competition. The

overall winner was Lola Wilson (Year 7).

CRICKET MASTER CLASSES

Pupils from Year 7 and 8

received cricket coaching

in conjunction with York-

shire Cricket Board.

Matthew Hurren, who is

the community cricket

coach for Scarborough

and district, introduced

the basic skills of bowling,

batting and fielding to the

pupils.

FORM 3 VISIT THE MOORS

NATIONAL PARK CENTRE

An intrepid team of young

geographers from Form 3 headed to

Danby Moors Centre to carry out a

river investigation in a tributary of

the River Esk. The pupils were able to

observe some of the river features

that they had learned about in class

last term, and witnessed erosion and

deposition in action on a meander in

the river. They recorded data,

including width and depth of the

channel and time taken for an object

to float a measured distance.

CYCLING FUN WITH ‘BIKEABILITY’

Form 3 took part in the Bikeability cycling proficiency programme, which aims

to teach children how to ride a bike safely. They were taught how to check

their bikes and how to use

the gears. They also

learned how to move

around obstacles safely,

how to turn left and right

at junctions and how to

use the Highway Code.

WHOLE SCHOOL CROSS

COUNTRY

On 16th March, the whole school

took part in the annual house run.

The conditions on the day were

excellent for running, which

helped produce some great

performances right across the

school. Going into the event the

Reds already had a slight

advantage due to victories in two

of the house football matches.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON OPEN MIC

In a very relaxed environment both pupils and

locals performed their own music to an

appreciative and supportive audience in Whitby.

The school’s harmony group performed ‘Steal

Away’ in 4 part harmony, followed by an

arrangement of ‘Sweet Dreams’ with a cello

accompaniment from Matthias Fiedler. After this,

George Ullyott, Anna Ayckbourn and Alfie Husband

took to the stage as the newly formed band ‘Zook Party’. Fyling Hall

completed their performances with a solo saxophone piece, by George who

played a seamless version of ‘Plaisir’.

“NEXT STEPS” FOR YEAR 12

Year 12 took part in a Fyling

Hall “Next Steps” day, a course of

sessions designed to prepare and

provide guidance to our pupils as

they start to think about their

‘next steps’ after A Levels. In the

morning, the pupils listened to a

talk given by Phil Gray, an

international officer from York

University. In the afternoon

they performed a variety of

activities, researched courses

and registered with UCAS.

DoE PRACTICE WALK

In March, a group of 14 Duke of

Edinburgh Award students went on a

practice expedition around Robin

Hood’s Bay and the countryside.

Overall they walked over 10 kilometres

and although most of

us ended up covered in

mud, to a greater or

rewarded by the

beautiful North York

landscapes.

S BEWERLEY PARK WEEKEND EXPEDITION

A group of adventurous pupils ventured to the wilds of the North Yorkshire

dales last weekend for an action-packed weekend at the Bewerley Park

Outdoor Activity Centre. Eleven pupils, along with Miss Gilmour and Rosie,

arrived in torrential rain on Friday and quickly settled into their assigned

dorms. An evening of activities - which included bridge building and puzzle

solving - ensued, interspersed only by a delicious dinner of lasagne and a

quick dance party before bedtime.

“THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING”

One evening, 15 students from years 10, 11, 12 and 13 went with much

anticipation to Whitby Pavilion cinema to watch “The Theory of Everything”.

All were determined to learn more about the life of one of the great thinkers

of the modern era—Stephen Hawking. Without exception, the students

thoroughly enjoyed the film and spent the whole journey home animatedly

talking about all of his many touching and thought provoking moments.

FUN WITH WORDS

Key Stage 3 pupils took part in a fun

competition that required them to

write a short story in just six words.

This was inspired by Ernest

Hemingway, who famously wrote a

six word story.

GERMAN TRIP TO WHITBY ABBEY

GALA CONCERT CELEBRATES “BEST OF THE FEST”

The Spa Pavilion hosted Gala night,

an evening that celebrated some of

the best music and spoken word

seen over the fortnight of this

year’s Eskdale Festival. Pupils from

Fyling Hall performed in several

categories and over the fortnight,

we received numerous first places.

A notable achievement included

the Senior Choir and Harmony

group who both took first place

against the prestigious Whitby

Community Choir and the Whitby

Feral Singers.

“ANNIE” CAST DELIVER MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE

The school has been ringing out with music, as the stars of the school

production of ‘Annie’ were able to share their hard work with their friends

and family. The cast have been working hard on the show since September

and performed to a packed audience. The cast ranged from Ewan Wormald

(Year 3) who played Sandy the dog, to Joe Buchanan (Year 13) who controlled

the lighting desk. Special plaudits must go to Lola Wilson who has stunned

audiences as Annie despite being new to the school in Year 7, and Amy El-

Bargouhty, who played Miss Hannigan and stood out with a manic, excitable

and incredibly watchable performance. However it was a team effort and the

whole cast have worked hard to create an excellent show with lots of fun,

excitement and the odd tear too.

ART IN THE SUN

Pupils at Fyling Hall are

often able to take advantage

by Mr Husband so that they

could be inspired by our

spectacular views.

Fyling Hall marked the annual

“National Book Day” with a

variety of activities. All form

groups across the school took

part in a quiz where they were

challenged to match up a

teacher’s name to a book that for one reason or another, was

memorable. There was also Fyling Hall’s “Reading Selfie” competition. The

competition brief was for the pupils to take interesting (but safe!)

photographs of themselves reading. There were lots of creative approaches.

It was a difficult decision, but the chosen winners were Dylan Greenwood

(Junior School), Lucas Ayckbourn (Y7-9) and Michael O’Sullivan (Y10-13).

FRENCH FILM EVENING

A group of senior pupils watched a

Jean-Pierre Jeunet film called

‘Micmacs’. Following a supper of

French cheeses and baguettes,

followed by a delicious Tarte au
