Every child has the right to attend school in a happy and conducive and environment. Only with education can the poverty chain be broken and children grow up to realize their dreams. PP David Kong buying a fish for dinner! This was part of the message spoken by RI President DK Lee at the Intercity Meet at Singapore last Friday. It was a privilege to hear him speak in person. It was indeed a memorable night for the great opportunity to meet and shake the hands of both the RI President and the RI first lady. It was equally exciting to hear MM Lee Kuan Yew speak after accepting the RI Award Of Honour. You can say a dream come true for yours truly. One of the emphases of the current RI president

is literacy ie to provide education for children of

the world. Every child has the right to attend school

in a happy and conducive and environment. Only

with education can the poverty chain be broken

and children grow up to realize their dreams.

ABO Chairman Charlie Tan

We have received a cheque from the Yayasan tun Ahmad Shah for

RM5,000.00 for our ABO project. I will send them a thank you letter.

This Saturday, 32 patients will be checking-in at the Paitan Hospital for

follow-up and operations. PP David Kong, PP Jimmy Liew and I will be

departing for Paitan on Saturday at mid-day.

Last Monday we had a Fireside Talk with potential Rotarians at the Kota

Kinabalu club. PP Tsen Kui Loi gave an excellent presentation on Rotary

International and the Rotary Club of Likas Bay. Members are encouraged

to continue introducing new members.

International Service- PP Vincent TanInternational Night was successful completed last Friday. Our club

presented a wonderful cowboy dance much to the delight of all who

attended. My sincere thanks to all the dancers.

New Generation Service – Rtn Wong Chu LaiWent to SMK Bandaraya to attend their first Interact meeting to brief

them about R C Likas Bay followed by President Soon Lan presenting a

copy of the Rotarian Magazine to the new Principal Shirley. Will do the

same for the other Interact clubs.

Inner Wheel Club, Kota Kinabalu

Innerwheel Club President Datin Rubina Pung and Innerwheeler Datuk

Nancy Ho were present to promote the upcoming IIW conference in

Kota Kinabalu in May 2009.

VP Michael TongThe new date for the Charity golf is on 9 May 2009. There will be a

committee meeting this Friday at the SGCC Green Restaurant.

Rotaract President Esther Chong

Thank you for sponsoring Rotaractors to the International Night. We all

had a wonderful time. I have just submitted the Presidential Citation

papers. We are planning to take the children of Tobo children home to

Desa next Saturday. We have just inducted a new member, bringing

the number of new members to 6. We now have 17 members.

Speaker: Rtn Ho Shi Yin gave an educational talk on Switchboards

well illustrated by a corporate video.

SaA PP Michael rang the bell and called the meeting to order and President Soon

Lan led the singing of the Negaraku, and proposed a toast to the health of His

Majesty the King.

PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Chua Soon Lan welcomed guests and fellow Rotarians before

making the following announcements:

1. At the BOD meeting last night, the Board approved two new members

to be inducted on the last Wednesday of March. They are Jessie Chang

and Juliana Tokuzip. Another potential member. Yvonne Tan was unable

to attend the Fireside Talk but we hope that she can still make it for the

induction.

2. Received Rotary Pin for our TRF contributions paid to RI in December

2008. These pins will be presented to them at a later meeting.

3. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated a further USD 255

million for RI’s PolioPlus campaign at the International Assembly in

January 2009. RI has now committed another USD100 million in

matching funds in 3 years. The PolioPlus challenge fund now stands at

USD550 million to eradicate polio. PP Datuk George has kindly sent all

Rotarians the link so that you can watch Bill Gates’ announcement on

the internet.

4. Many thanks to all Directors for completing their reports on time for

submission to the district.

5. Our heartfelf condolences to PP Datuk Johnson Tee on the recent

demise of his brother Jimmy Tee.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Service Projects – PP Jimmy LiewCommunity Service Director - Vincent Chua

Gravity water feed project - the water dam has been done and the

villagers are now laying the pipes. I will continue to monitor their progress.

Another project was discussed at the last BOD. This concerns the

donation of used clothings and books to St. Theresa’s orphanage for

children 7-9 years old. Rotarians with childlren’s books and used

clothings please contact me.
