MEET JIM LEYDEN, OUR NEW DIRECTOR
Warmest greetings!
I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to proudly serve the older adult population of Longmeadow and I look forward to creating meaningful
and lasting relationships with the entire community.
My passion and commitment for working in aging services can be traced back to the special bond I had with my grandmother. We connected via many meaningful moments throughout my life, and I had the pleasure of living with and taking care of her for over 15 years. Our time together taught me the value of caregiving and how to treat not only seniors,
but everyone, with compassion, dignity and respect.
Most of my life was spent in the Springfield area, including my schooling at Springfield College, where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Services. I also attended BayPath University, where I earned a Master’s Degree in
Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy.
Prior to coming to Longmeadow, I was the Program Coordinator for the Chicopee Council on Aging where I held a variety of responsibilities including program development & volunteer management. Most recently, I served as Deputy Director of the West Springfield Council on Aging and was involved in the daily management of the senior center operations. Both of these experiences were key in honing my skills and preparing me to lead the Longmeadow Adult
Center as Director.
This is truly an exciting time for all of us here at the Longmeadow Council on Aging! I’m confident, as we go forward, the Adult Center will thrive in all areas of program and service delivery. I am open to exploring ideas and suggestions to better serve your needs and meet your
expectations!
Keen-age Korner This space is to highlight some of the inspirational people who are part of the Longmeadow Adult Center. We learn so much from their wisdom! Venessa O’Brien is one such “keen
-ager”.
“May I Help You?” by Patricia Burden
“I’m just taking a look,” they say as they enter the Maple Tree Shoppe at the Adult Center. Here we find Venessa O’Brien, manager. She has spent the last twenty years tending the shop and always ultimately serving the customer. Sales and dedicated, personal service have been her modus operandi. And they come from all over…Boston; Worcester; Hartford, Connecticut; up and down the Pioneer Valley. For some senior visitors, it’s a nostalgic journey & a time to reminisce, things once resigned to down-sizing or stuff that always made them happy. To others, it is the merchandise, the display, a “fair” bargain purchase & always her commendable customer service. Her enthusiasm to please the customer is deep-rooted.
For Venessa, aged 98, it has been a lifetime journey.
Hailing from Maine, Venessa made her way to western Massachusetts as a student at Bay Path Secretarial School. Upon graduation, she spent the next 45 years as a top salesperson for General Electric, which was then located in Springfield. And she stayed local when the offices relocated. She was given the privilege of running her operation from home, long before the concept encouraged others to seek and enjoy the benefits of “working at home.” As a pioneer she devoted herself to running an exemplary operation. She set up numerous display shelves in her basement and insisted on supplying the most wanted industrial products. She always sought solutions for the customer. If she didn’t have it, she got it quickly. Many local manufacturers depended on her reliable
customer service, among them Package Machinery.
“Her energy level is unreal & she never ceases to amaze me. She has extraordinary talent & creative ability,” says Sharon Franz who has volunteered the past 2 plus years. “She thoroughly researches the donations on line to value them.” Sharon is one of many volunteers who staff the shop weekly, ten regulars & ten subs. Judy Baskin assists in overall management. Venessa will readily admit that the research garners a fair price for the merchandise that she usually tags at 1/3 its worth. Her marketing includes spot or online advertising, some consignment & always word of mouth. Some suggest utilizing eBay. She declares, “I love personally meeting people & I love merchandising!” What pleases her most is to do everything needed to make the sale & making some kind of difference in someone’s life. Her efforts have paid off, especially this past year, as the shop raised more than $18,000 for FOLOCA which benefits senior programming at the center.

Venessa has a lifetime of experience she graciously shares with us. Since retiring she has done much in sales yet still found time to attend and study interior design. She loves golf and has skied all over New England, out west and throughout Europe, favoring Sugarloaf in Maine as her best. Her annual travels include Russia, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia and China. She regularly participates in programming at the center, especially those related to health and exercise. She knows that there is a customer out there and hopefully she can be of service. Her comprehensive background and talents contribute to the success of the shop. She is
there just about every day.
Everything is neatly categorized by type; the merchan- dise is unique; the displays are inviting and the bargains tempting. There is no rummaging through piles here. This is one classy, personal operation. From children’s books to dining room fine glassware to household necessities to new jewelry pieces to framed artwork to interior decorating accents to lightly used clothing to whatever you might want or seek, Venessa cordially invites you “to
come take a look.”

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES & RESOURCES
Aging Together — Staying Positive
“It's likely our species survived because of our knack for detecting danger. But our worry-filled thoughts can
present dangers of their own: Thinking negatively can drag down our moods, our actions and even our health.
Experts say it's worthwhile—and possible—to learn how to think more positively.”
This snippet taken from Mental Health America’s website on Staying positive sets the tone for our next conversation on June 28,
10`7 at 12:30pm. Come spend an hour discussing with peers how to stay healthy.

AGING THROUGH ART
The ChangingAging tour is a series of live theatrical events designed to help communities
think differently about aging. These live events blend masterful storytelling, breathtaking
visual art, live music and medical science together to offer hope and encouragement to older
people.
There will be 3 exhibitions on June 12 at the Gloth Auditorium at JGS Lifecare during the
following times:
Disrupt Dementia - A two-hour workshop designed to challenge misconceptions about dementia and topple stereotypes about people who live with dementia. The workshop is for people who live with dementia, their families and their professional and lay
caregivers. 2:30-4:30, $20
Community Expo - a free exposition that reflects what the local community is doing to age positively. Service providers and non-profits will have vendor tables and we will curate demonstrations - past expos have featured intergenerational musical ensembles,
live elder yoga, art exhibits, cooking, etc. 4:30-7:00, free to attend.
Life's Most Dangerous Game - Bill's signature 90 minute non-fiction theatrical performance where he and musicians Nate Silas
Richardson and Namarah McCall together explore aging as a rich process of growth. 7:00-8:30, $20
To book your spots in one of the above opportunities please call JGS Lifecare at: 413-567-6211. You may also contact the Adult
Center for a coupon worth 50% off to the theatrical performance.
PREVENT MEDICARE/MEDICAID FRAUD
Doctors and doctors’ offices have notified The Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services (CMS) that they are receiving prescription renewal
requests from unfamiliar, out-of-state pharmacies. When doctors realize the
requests are for prescriptions or supplies their patients do not receive, they
deny the requests.
As always, Medicare beneficiaries are strongly encouraged to review their
quarterly Medicare Summary Notice and their Medicare Explanation of
Benefits to ensure Medicare is billed accurately. If there are any questions
about prescriptions, doctors, pharmacies or services listed on the benefit
statements, members can call their plan or 1-800-Medicare.
We would like to give a special thank you to the all
the residents of the Town of Longmeadow and all
those individuals who have contributed and will
continue to contribute to the food pantry this year.
The Food Pantry operates on a Federal Fiscal Year,
and since October of 2016 you have donated 4,994
pounds of food and saved your neighbors in need a
total of nearly $8,500! Your contributions have
accounted for 87% of all the food that we have seen
come through the food pantry this year!
With your gracious gifts and kind thoughts this food
pantry has continued to provide a variety of meals to
those in need of a little extra help in Longmeadow,
please consider that we are most in need of the
following items when you next visit the store:
Tuna fish
Cold Cereals
Baking Goods
Baking Mixes & Frosting
Beverages
Condiments
Cookies/Crackers
Pancake Mixes
While some of these foods may be considered by
some to be “unnecessary”, they are a part of many
households; and we are trying to support the
nutritional needs of all while also providing a special
treat that may not be in the budget for our patrons.
VETERANS CIRCLE

Good-Bye For Now
The last 17 months have been a blast! I have
made so many new friends and have been
fortunate enough to help some of you with
navigating the VA and State veterans benefits
programs. I want to say thank you for the
opportunity and the experiences you have shared
with me and I wish you all the best.
I will be transitioning over as the Director of
Veterans’ Services for the city of Holyoke, my home
town, and I am
excited about this
new opportunity.
I’m always a phone
call away so please
don’t hesitate to
call. Take care of
each other and
