Nilsen Contact Info Phone:218-828-9374 Email: [email protected] www.lolbaxter.org Evening Bible Study Starting in January At 7 pm on Wednesday nights starting January 8, I will be offering an evening bible study. This study will feature a unique visually based approach to the study of God's Word. Through exploring the meaning associated with visual diagrams, participants will come to know and inwardly digest the content of the study. I have taught this course before and it was enormously successful. In a congregation much smaller than Lord of Life, we had over twenty people who spent a total of two years eagerly dwelling in the scriptures. Not one person dropped out. At the end of the session, they had learned the material so well that when armed with the diagrams they were able to teach the lessons themselves. This bible study uses old-school technology. In these days when record players are making a comeback, I'm looking forward to forsaking the world of PowerPoint and Keynote in favor of going back to the same format used in my high school days: Overhead Transparencies! I've dug out the overhead projector from the attic and dusted it off - it's ready to go! While it's true that the Bible can be a very difficult book to understand, it is the greatest story of all time and well worth becoming more knowledgable about. We will dig deep into the Scriptures. We will be inspired and filled with an experience of revelation, joy, hope and discovery during our time together. Through this Bible study we will gain critical insights into God's work in our world. It's the story of a loving God who is eager to restore an eternal relationship with humanity; indeed, with all of God's creation. It's my hope that by scheduling it on Wednesday evenings, parents who bring their youth to Confirmation might benefit from staying and learning more about this great story. It's also my hope that this study will help prepare a group from Lord of Life to travel to the very land where this greatest of all stories took place -- to the Holy Land. More on that later. We will begin promptly at 7 pm and end promptly at 8 pm. Hope to see you there. Blessings, Pastor Steve

Evening Bible Study Starting in January

At 7 pm on Wednesday nights starting January 8, I will be offering an evening bible study.

Blessings,

Pastor Steve

Thank you to the congregation for supporting the Tanzania Mission Trip by attending the Swedish Meatball dinner in December. We served nearly 90 individuals and are so grateful for your support. We continue to work towards reaching our goal for the paint and construction supplies and our stay at the children’s clinic in Tanzania. An extra thank you to Vickie Borgstrom (our head cook) on Wednesday, December 11, for her knowledge of producing a delicious meal of Swedish Meatballs and all the fixings. Also, thank you for the purchase of the “HOPE” bracelets throughout the Christmas holidays. We hope to have them all sold by the time we load the plane in June!

Watch for our TRAVEL TRUNK in the lobby of the church. We would love to fill this trunk with the needed medical, children, infant and paint supplies that we hope to bring with us in our suitcases. See the items listed below.

Thank you for your donations.

Lord of Life is a Stephen Ministry Congregation

We now begin our second year of providing one-to-one Christian care to folks who are facing difficult life challenges. Almost a year ago we began our first 4-month-long Stephen Ministry training course, and our 5 current Stephen Ministers were commissioned last June. These faith-filled and committed members of Lord of Life are Wendy Adamson, Deb Cervantez, Pam Cook, Julie Johnson, and Gary Engelmann. Four of these dedicated folks have each been meeting about once a week with their individual care receivers. In addition, they attend a combination peer-group supervision meeting and continuing education talk twice a month. Deb Cervantez now facilitates the peer-group supervision meetings and will also be assigned a care receiver in January. It’s very clear to us, the Stephen Ministry Leader Team, that the Holy Spirit is strongly and faithfully at work in and through each of these amazing people to bring comfort and hope to their care receivers. All of us together, ministers and leaders alike, quickly became a close, trusting, supportive, grateful, and prayerful team. We’d all very much like to have more folks join us in this rewarding and valuable venture.   Would you like to be trained to walk alongside a person who could use a caring listener during a family or personal crisis? We’re accepting applications for our next training course, to be scheduled once we know how many new trainees we will have. Our pastors have identified at least 26 fellow congregants who could use the support of a Stephen Minister at this time, so Lord of Life has a significant need for more people to step up and volunteer for this rewarding and worthwhile venture. Any one of us will be happy to speak with you and answer your questions: Pastor Erika, Pastor Steve, Deb Bergstrom, and Lolly Kalinoski.  INVITATION to all Lord of Life members: On Tuesday, January 14, 6 pm-7 pm, Deb Bergstrom, our Stephen Ministry Continuing Education Coordinator, will be presenting “Connections Matter”, a PowerPoint program and short discussion about creating resiliency both personally and in community life. The Connections Matter’s website states: “Every day connections are more important than we ever believed. Science tells us that relationships have the power to shape our brains. Relationships help us learn better, work better, parent better. When we experience tough times, they help us heal. With each connection, we develop a healthier, stronger community.” Please join us in LOL’s sanctuary on January 14, for this timely and intriguing presentation. Also, be watching for more upcoming open-to-all invitations for Stephen Ministry continuing education meetings.   We thank you for your prayers and support as we continue to establish Stephen Ministry here at Lord of Life. Please continue praying, especially that folks with the God-given gifts of compassion and willingness to serve in God’s work will come forward as potential new trainees in this faith-filled ministry.

We are looking for Kid’s Time Lead Teachers and Assistants for our Sunday 9 am and Wednesday 6 pm services. All lessons and activities are planned and prepped for you. An easy and exciting way to invest in the children of our church. If interested, please visit the following link: bit.ly/374Vxmx

It truly is as easy as 1-2-3, see below for what a typical Sunday or Wednesday will look like for our Kid’s Time program in 2020.

Sunday 9 am Kid’s Time •Lead Teacher (Reads Bible Lesson, leads one station) •Assistant (Gather children and lead to classroom, crowd and noise control, lead one station)

Kid’s Time will have an assigned Lead Teacher and Assistant for the Sunday 9 am service. All kids will head to the Sonshine Room once dismissed from Kid’s Sermon. The Lead Teacher will read the Bible Lesson as the Assistant keeps kids quiet and attentive.

Once the lesson is finished, kids will be divided into two groups (older and younger). There will be two stations related to the lesson that kids will do each Sunday. This could vary from craft, game, sensory, STEM, worship, yoga, or snack. Lead teacher will be in charge of one station while the Assistant is in charge of the other.

Sunday and Wednesday lesson and station activities will be planned, prepped, and laid out ahead of time by Susan Rioux. All the Lead Teacher needs to do is familiarize himself/herself with the Bible Lesson. Both Lead Teacher and Assistant should arrive to church 15 minutes early.

Wednesday 6 pm Kid’s Time •Lead Teacher (Reads Bible Lesson and leads activity) •Great opportunity for confirmation student and a parent, pair of youth, or family to lead! Confirmation students

can fulfill community volunteer hours!

The Scripture tells us to pray for each other (James 5:16). As a body we pray for our congregation, alphabetically rotating through our church family on an annual basis. Each week we will pray for specific Lord of Life families. Although you may not know each member of our congregation, our God listens to the prayers we bring on each other‘s behalf before his throne. Please make a commitment to include your brothers and sisters at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in your daily prayers.

Gift Cards Needed

Please consider donating grocery and gas gift cards from area businesses. These gift cards are used for local families in need during the holiday season and throughout the year. Any denomination helps and we will be accepting gift cards through January 31.

Dear Lord of Life Church,

On behalf of the Board and Staff of Kinship Partners, I want to thank you for your donation to our main fundraising event “Taste of the Lakes.” Thanks in part to your generosity, Kinship Partners raised over $60,000 to benefit our work with children by “Transforming our Community Through the Power of Mentoring.” Thank you for the quilt donation.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Holmvig Executive Assistant
