Food Pantry
Guardian Angels Parish is fortunate to have a food pantry
to assist with the hungry in the Westport and Roanoke
neighborhoods. We do utilize Harvester’s for the bulk of
our food items in our pantry, but we rely on the generosity
of parishioners for both food and personal care items.
Current food needs: Corn flakes or cheerios, canned
corn, canned vegetables, peanut butter, tooth brushes and
toothpaste.
Palm Sunday Easter Egg Hunt
On Palm Sunday, we will have an Easter egg hunt in the
grotto, following the 11:00 am mass. In preparation for this
popular event, please help us by bringing in hard plastic eggs
stuffed with wrapped candy. John Sheeley is the head Easter
bunny in charge of this event. If you bring in stuffed eggs,
Kate in the parish office will collect the eggs for John.

Save the Date
This year, our beloved Westport Community Festival,
will take place June 7th, 2020, from Noon until 8:00
pm. The Silent Auction started soliciting items for the
Auction in January. This event is extremely time
consuming and work intensive, but it is totally worth it!
You are invited to attend our next festival meeting this
Monday, March 9 at 6:30 pm in the Parish Office.
Save Bags and Make Mats
On Saturday March 28, from 10 to noon, everyone is
invited to join us in the Parish Hall to make sleeping
mats for the homeless. They will be made with
unwanted plastic shopping bags that overfill our
cupboards, trash cans and landfills.
We will provide the instructions, the crochet hooks and
some of the bags. But, to help as many people as
possible, we need you to:
• Deposit your unwanted bags in a bin under the long
table at the side of the nave, by our Guardian
Angel. Every week, please. We need 100s. Well,
actually, 1000s. Look for a sample of the mats on
that same table.
• Join us, if you can. Because many hands make for
lighter work.

Harvester’s
Guardian Angels Church parishioners will be going to
Harvester’s to assist in food sorting on Saturday, March 28.
We are scheduled to be there from 10 am till 12 noon. We
will meet in the south parking lot (near the parish office) no
later than 9:15 am and we will carpool to Harvester’s.
Children as young as eight years old may volunteer with
parental supervision (one parent per one child).
The Gift of Healing
This Monday, March16th! Don’t miss the blessing of Alan Ames at our church, at 6:30 p.m. Alan is an Evangelist and Visionary from Australia. He has traveled extensively over the last 24 years. He has visited 50 countries and six continents, giving witness to his conversion from a man of sin to one who is very close to God and the Roman Catholic Church. We at Guardian Angels have the chance to hear him in person, a rare event in the Kansas City area. Many people have reported physical, emotional and spiritual healings during these healing services all over the world. For more information about the work of Alan Ames, go to AlanAmes.org or on Facebook: Alan Ames International Ministry. Please invite your family and friends to an evening that could change their lives.
Help Your Business - Help Your Parish
We have a chance to save our parish thousands of
dollars a year by contracting with Diocesan
Publications for our weekly bulletin. The bulletin will
still be authored by our office. But the cost to us will be
ZERO.
Not only that, Diocesan will set up us with a free app
just for our parish, with access to our bulletins,
calendars, and events, plus podcasts by Bishop Barron
and our own, Father Ed Wills, and more.
But there’s one little hitch: Diocesan pays for this free
service to our parish through the ads of local
businesses.
Do you own a business? What better way to advertise
than to your fellow parishioners and our visitors?
Do you know someone who owns a business? They
might like to know about this great opportunity to
advertise and help others at the same time.
We can’t save $1000s without your help.
Please prayerfully consider. And if you think this might
be a good advertising venue for you, let Cheryl Wills
know at [email protected] or
816.945.7819. She will pass on your interest to our
friend, Dave Laney, with Diocesan Publications who
will answer all your questions. Thank you!

Beloved,
The uniqueness of the petition, “Give us this day our daily
bread,” is reflected in its vocabulary. The Greek word translated
“daily bread” is epiousios and is unique to the Our Father. A
close relative is found on an ancient papyrus shopping list of
ingredients needed to make a chickpea bread for the next day,
which provides us with the most common translation, “the bread
we need day by day.” However, other possible translations
include “the bread that increases our substance,” or “the bread
that is above being.” The Douay Rheims Bible translates it
“super substantial bread.” We can best understand it as bread
that is both natural and supernatural, both physical and spiritual.
When the disciples first heard this prayer, they likely recalled
the manna that fed the Israelites as they wandered in the
wilderness for forty years. Recall that when Moses led the
people of Israel out of Egypt, they had to pass through the desert
of Sinai to reach the Promised Land. Because they left in a hurry
and did not carry sufficient provisions for the journey, they soon
complained that they had no food. After Moses prayed, God
miraculously sent them bread in the form of tiny flakes that
appeared with the dew in the morning. At first, the Israelites did
not know what it was, so they called it “manna,” which is
Hebrew for, “What is it?” Moses explained it was bread sent
from heaven but warned that it would only be good for one day.
If they tried to hoard it, it would be spoiled by the next day.
Quite literally manna was “daily bread.”
At Capernaum, Jesus taught, “I am the bread that came
down from heaven. I am the bread of life. (John 6:41, 35)
He applied this to his own mission. “My food is to do the
will of my Father who sent me. (John 4:34) And, to our
worship, “While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He
gave thanks. Then, he broke it and gave it to his
disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my
body.’” (Matthew 6:26)
First, we see that manna provided a physical sustenance to
the Israelites in the desert. Second, we learn that doing the will
of his Father provided spiritual sustenance to Christ. And finally,
Christ reveals that his own body provides a spiritual sustenance
to us for eternal life. This threefold meaning of the term “daily
bread” is key to embracing Christ's prayer. In his prayer, Jesus
teaches us that God recognizes, anticipates, and provides for our
daily needs. But also, he understands our need for vocation
through which we find fulfillment in pursuing that which God
created us to do, and, more importantly, he provides for our
spiritual and eternal needs on a daily basis.
All our needs are fulfilled in daily Eucharist. In it we are
physically and spiritually nourished by his body and blood. This
includes forgiveness of our sins, healing of our bodies,
deliverance from the devastation of addiction, and freedom from
the fear and shame that holds us back from becoming the people
God created us to be. There we are guided by his Holy Spirit
into the vocation through which we find fulfillment and daily
sustenance. There we find grace and strength to make it through
another day.
Yours in Christ,
Father Ed

Consideration of Peace to Obedience, Suffering, and Hope
We are honored to bring a Mission to our church that many people
have not experienced. The mission will be led by Father Luther Toole,
a former Anglican priest who entered the Catholic Church through the
Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter in 2004. Father Toole is
coming in from Saint Louis to lead us closer to Jesus through a four
night journey of Consideration of Peace to Obedience, Suffering, and
Hope - which leads to Peace.
Each night will include a simple free meal shared in silence, a teaching
from Divine Intimacy, prayer and discussion. Included on various
nights are Stations of the Cross, Evensong, Adoration and Benediction,
and Solemn Evensong.
We will host Father Toole on Wednesday through Saturday, March
25 to 28. On Wednesday through Friday, we will start at 6pm. On
Saturday the 28th, we will begin at 5pm, after Mass.
