Essay Brief:

FIFTH DEADLINE: MONDAY 12TH MAY 10am ESSAY ON CREATIVE PROTEST IN BIRMINGHAM AND RECUPERATION WITH APPENDICES

The group must submit critical essay on the creative protests experienced in Birmingham, what the messages of these protests mean and how they become recuperated in consumer culture. Think about what happens to meaning, cool and protest when applied to various contexts such as officialdom and the non-official.

Each member of the group needs to write 300 words.

The word count does not include bibliography or appendices.

You will need to do background research after the activities on the artists or locations you have experienced to give context to the locations, art seen, etc. You will also need to read the literature attached but also do further textual research. Use the days between the activity and lecture to start mind mapping, planning your group essay and analysing your data. The lecture will explain the theory, which will help you to contextualise the essay.

Put your photographs and research in your appendices at the end of your essay. You can reference images within the appendices in the main bod of the group essay. The appendices will evidence your activities in Birmingham.

Email your essay with appendices to:Gemma ([email protected]) ANDJohn ([email protected]).

You will need to upload your essay and appendices to your group blog too.

Lecture: Friday 9th May

The lecture will explore the theories on creative activism, culture jamming, recuperation and cool. We will also explore a range of creative activisms and their messages.

There will be no seminars on Friday; instead there will be drop-in sessions from 12-4 in ETG22 for you to discuss your essay.

Googledocs is one of the best platforms for you to work on the document together.
