The practice of spirituality Always we say that we have to be spiritual in our routine busy life. But some of us are not able to understand the real meaning of spirituality. It means that we have to bring our Guru, Shri Sai before our vision, and have to think about him, meditate on him and follow what we read from his teachings. Mere reading of His teachings without following them is of no impor- tance in life. Shri Sai always wants his devotees to devote their time eve- ryday to Him. Also Shraddha and Saburi are two genuine factors needed to inculcate this practice of spirituality. When we do this all our needs will be taken care by the Sadguru. He is the question and indeed the answer itself for our prayers. He always does good for us and He knows what to do. We have to just do our duty and depend on Him for the results…Everything is well said and well done by our Guru. On this Thursday let us have this practice bring excellence to our exis- tence in this unstable world. Namah 31 December, 1911 Sunday, Shirdi I got up very early in the morning, prayed & was walking in the verandah when Hamsa came downstairs & said that he could not sleep well & so wandered out & went to Khandoba Temple then to the house occupied at present by RadhaKrishna Bai in the hope of hearing her pray but found that there were no signs of anybody staying in the house. So he wandered about the village gate. Later on he went again & met Radha Krishna Bai. She kindly helped him so he bathed, prayed and had breakfast out of the Prasad sent to her by Sayin Maharaj. I stood talking with him. He went to Radha Krishna Bai again to say goodbye and she gave him a dhoti & a shirt as Prasad. Then he returned to Bombay with the three young men that were with him. The name of one of them was Rege. All this made me late for everything & was further delayed by the Barber. I saw Sayin Baba go out but he did not permit any body to approach him & salute at close quarters. I went to the Masjid later on & sat there to attend the midday worship. During the Arti all the males had to stand today below the platform in the open, leaving the whole Masjid for the ladies. The arrangement was very good. On my return, I sat talking with the Mamledar of Kopargaon who happened to be here. Later on came Mr Deva Mamledar of Dahanu. Nanasaheb Chandorkar came before Arti. Our breakfast was as usual about 2 P.M. After it I sat reading the newspapers received today. The Conventionist Congress does not appear to have been an unqualified success. Towards evening I went to the Masjid but Sayin Maharaj gave “Udi ” soon.. So I sat on the plinth of the new building, talking with the Gujarathi Shastri who is with Govardhandas. We saluted Sayin Maharaj when he came out for his usual stroll & again at Sheja-Arti. Then we had the Bhajan of Bhishma & Dixit’ Ramayan.

Megha, one of the strong devotees on Baba wanted to bath Sri Sai Baba with the sacred wa-ters of Godavari. Sai Baba often called Godavari river as Ganga. Megha's devotion towards Sadguru Sai Baba was total and he saw and worshipped Him as Lord Shiva. Megha's heart thrived to bath Sai Baba with the sacred waters of Godavari river. When Megha requested Sai Baba about his heart's desire. Baba replied, "Why Sachaila-Snana? In the whole body the head and the feet are the important from the worship viewpoint. So you pour and offer water on head and feet. That will be sufficient." Megha's whole being blossomed like Lotus. In this spiritual state, quite unaware of what Sai Baba had just said, Megha emptied the whole pot of water, which he had filled with waters of Godavari. One hand of Megha was ringing the bell according to the customary temple ritual while wor-shiping the deity. After poring the pot-full of water right on Shri Sai Baba's head, when Megha opened his eyes, what Megha saw astonished him. He saw that only Sai Baba's head and feet were wet with water.

Pujyasri B.V.Narasimhaswamiji, who visited Shirdi in the year 1936, collected authentic information about Lord Sainath from persons lived with Sai and wrote many books on Lord Sainath. All his works are authentic . One such book is SRI SAINATHA MANANAM. This book was published as early as in the year 1942 and the fourth edition came in the year 1945.

J ai, Jai, Jagannadha ! Jai,Thou destroyer of Sin ! Jai, Thou protector of the good. Jai, Thou granter of all reward ! I have never seen nor heard of any one who protects just like Sainatha. He has no material body, com-posed of flesh, bone, etc., To one who takes refuge with Sai who loves his surrendered devotees, Kaivalya (liberation ) is ready at hand--what doubt about all other blessings? That Sai who saved Sri Gopal Rao Buti and Sri Mirikar from snake bite and who was looking after crowds of devotees is not gone anywhere.(He is here still). Do not be dejected. Sai will bless you. God Sai Hari must be worshipped by all the world, because: (1) Of his kindness (2) His grant of Sanctuary or freedom from all fears. (3) His removal of the troubles of the distressed. (4) Of his lofty qualities. (5) His wiping away of sin. (6) and his conferring the loftiest position on the devotees. There are six witnesses for this namely: (1) N.G.Chandorkar (2) Merikar (3) S.B.Nachne (4) G.G.Narke (5) the Snake and (6) Nulkar (the sub-Judge) Victory is yours O Pundarikaksha ! Victory is yours O All--Blessed.!

DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE AND ARTICLES INTRODUCING SHRI SHIRDI SAI BABA (Late) Dr. RS.R. Swami There are moments in a person's life when due to something seen or heard or experienced or all put together, a turning - point is brought about, the beginning of a new phase, a new vista was experiencing it. I forthwith wrote to Sri Kesavaiahji telling him about my helpless condition and praying for his blessings. I received a prompt reply asking me to be devoted to Baba, to utter His name at least 108 time daily, fast every Thursday night for nine months and give my meal to the first Fakir that might call, and I should become all right by Baba's grace. I did accordingly and became all right.

Glory be to Shri Shirdi Sai - Grace be to all

30-08-1997: Sai appeared as an unknown person and said: 1.To run away from the loved ones irresponsibly in their difficult times is inhu-mane especially when they have fully trusted you. 2.There are many handicapped and orphans living in this World. Humanity de-mand to extend help in the needed hour. 3.Do not ask for any more wealth after experiencing God’s grace. Pray God for the welfare of all. That will be the real winning situation for humanity. Social obligations are binding having chosen to live in society.

It was my habit to worship Baba with Sahasranamarchana every Thursday, for which as well as for the preliminary Anga Puja and Ashtothara Puja, at least some twelve hundred flowers are required at the rate of one for each name. One Thursday in the winter of '42,I forgot to gather the flowers in the morn-ing and remembered it only late in the evening a little before sunset. No flower could be had at that late hour. However, in lieu of flower tulsi dhalams (twig endings with two leaves and a bud), could be used. Fortunately, we had a bed of tulsi bushes in the neighbourhood. So, along with some of my student friends[1], I set about gathering tulsi till sunset after which tradition forbids it. Each of us kept count of the number plucked and the total came to about seven hundred only. A recount of all put together con-firmed it. I decided to make up the deficiency with Akshatha[2]. However, when once I began the Puja, I forgot all about the shortage and went on with one tulsi dha-lam for each name, reassured and beckond by the generous heap in the tray before me. Not till the puja was over and I relaxed after partaking of prasadam was my attention attracted to the substantial quantity of tulsi still left in the tray. I checked with those present to make sure that I had continuously used only the tulsi for each 'name' of the archana. On counting the quantity left over I found nearly three hundred dhalams. How else could I explain it except as Baba's leela. "Ask and it shall be given."

Glory be to Shri Sirdi Sai - Grace be to all

Devotees Experience: I have had several miraculous experiences in my life and I attribute them to SAIBABA. I would like to share one of my recent experiences. Four months ago, I decided to take part in a race per one of my friend’s suggestion. She has had several years of experience in doing this race while this was my first. She was very much willing to help me with the training and she did. We had a great training schedule and it all went well until the last three weeks before the race. I started having problems that I did not know the cause of. I just did not feel even close to how I was feeling prior to this. In fact, it kept getting worst. I was really worried since my family and I had invested so much in me succeed-ing this challenge. Moreover my friends and colleagues were quite aware of me doing this and it was a question of embarrassment should I have to drop out. I did not know what I was going to do. All along, my friend and I were making plans to finish the race together. This seemed impossible since I could not even do 1/4th of the race without having problems while my friend was getting stronger every day. At this point, I talked to Baba, told him how important this is for me, and asked if he could help me. As always, like Baba says, "If you look to me I look to you", he immediately heard my prayer and I started feeling better. -Rebecca, USA

In addition to his oral Japa of "Ram Hari Ram," Kaluram was going on writing that mantra in chits and a quantity of them were with us. When Upasani Baba came to Andheri, he said he wanted such chits and they were handed over to him. In 1924 Gadgi Baba came over to my house to see this boy. In 1926, Kalu had dropsy and low fever. We gave him only Baba's Udhi. The disease continued for a while. On Kartik Sudha Ekadasi (so piously celebrated by thousands of pilgrims at Pandharpur and other Vishnu Sthalas), Kaluram approached his end. He called me to his bedside and asked for Jnaneswari. It was at once pro-duced. He himself opened it and picked up the XIII Chap-

ter. At that time I was feeling the sadness of the approaching end, the bitterness that we had to part with such a son. But Kalu cheered me up and said, "What is there to cry for? Read this (Ch. XIII). Read it aloud for me. I am going to-day." My heart was sinking under a load of grief and I could not read it. Then he kept the book in front of him and breathed his last. A fitting termination, this departure on Kartik Ekadasi, was for such a life. But yet how sad was such an early death? No wonder that Baba wept in 1918 when he gave the coconut and clearly perceived that such an early death was to crown such a life. As for the continuance of my line, by Baba's blessings, that was made secure. In 1922, i.e., one year after Kaluram's mother died, my parents were arranging for my second marriage. A choice had to be made between a girl that would bring some wealth or pecuniary contribution with her and a poor girl. The proposal of the first girl that would bring in Rs.600 was being considered by my father. I did not favor it. Baba came in my mother's dream and said to her "Do not accept this girl in mar-riage for your son." In the same dream my mother saw another girl. A little later the uncle and guardian of a poor girl offered her hand in marriage to me. I referred him to my mother. She saw the girl and found it was the very girl she had seen in the above-mentioned dream. This settled the question and the latter girl was married to me in 1922, and several children were born of this marriage and with Baba's bless-ings are getting on well. "Baba's blessings" is no empty formal phrase. I will cite

several instances to show how he has guarded them and saved their lives as he saved mine (at least twice, as already mentioned by me). In 1926, my son, Sainath alias Hareswar, was eight or nine months old. Kaluram had crackers and Bengal matches. One of my children threw away a lighted match. It fell on Sainath and his clothes caught fire. He wore a cloth beneath his waist and a frock next to the skin. Both these caught fire. The children did not realise the seriousness of the situation and raised no alarm. My wife was outside the house en-gaged with something. Suddenly a Fakir appeared before her and pointing his arm and finger towards the terrace on which the children were playing, said "See what is going on there." My wife at once went in-side and noticed the fire on the child's clothes. With great presence of mind and resourcefulness, she ran to the child, seized the clothes and rolled them between her palms and thus boldly extinguished the fire. The front half of the frock from bottom to the neck was burnt out and part of the nether cloth also. But the child (Sainath) came off entirely scatheless. Though the frock worn next to the skin was burnt out, his skin had not been burnt, nor was his nether portion burnt. This complete safety was evidently due to the same cause as the sudden appearance of the Fakir. The Fakir had also suddenly disappeared. When she came out after extinguishing the fire, there was no trace of the Fakir. Who could the Fakir be, how had he known the fire accident the very moment it happened and why should he be at the trouble to watch over the children and fetch their mother to save them at the nick of time? In 1928, Sainath, then two years old, had an accident. As usual he was running about; and one day he fell down the stairs. There was a heap of the debris at the bottom, I ran up and was surprised to see him standing without any injury at all. He told me, "Do not fear. Baba bore me up."

Seeta had a friend at school. Her name was Anantha. They were the best of friends. They were together every day. They had a lot in common, and they made each other smile. They even traded clothes, because they liked each other's style

But one day Seeta did something that made Anantha feel sad. She told another friend about a secret Anantha had. She fell behind in her math class, and she

needed a hand. She had to get a tutor who could help her un-derstand.

She hoped no one would find out. People might think she was slow. So she kept it a secret that only Seeta would know. But Seeta told another friend, and she told someone too. She didn't keep the secret, and now everybody knew!

It made Anantha embarrassed. It was not to be discussed. But Seeta broke her promise, and now she lost Anantha's trust. So Anantha said to Seeta, "I can't trust you anymore!" And then she turned around and quickly headed out the door.

It hurt to hear her say those words and watch her walk away. And Seeta was afraid that she lost her best friend that day. So Seeta followed after her, and when she found her friend, she told her she'd do anything to have her trust again.

Then Anantha said, "I want to trust you, but trust must be earned. You didn't keep your promise, and I really hope you've learned. But trust comes when you show you care about how someone feels, and it may take a little time before this heartache heals."

Then Seeta said she would not ever make the same mis-take. She said she'd earn her trust again, whatever it may take. She told her that their friendship meant too

much to just let go. And she knew that their friendship still had lots of room to grow.

So Seeta was more careful in the things she did and said. She didn't tell her secrets. She protected her instead. She showed how much she cared by doing what was best for her. Their friendship grew much stronger and was able to endure.

Then Anantha said to Seeta, "I'm so glad you're still my friend. You always look out for me, and I'll trust you 'till the end."

Signs of Sad-guru

Continued from last issue….

Mr.Shevade Mr. Sapatneker of Akkalkot (Sholapur District) was studying for law. A co-student Mr.Shevade met him. Other fellow students also gath-ered together and compared notes of their study. It was found by the questions and answers amongst themselves, that Mr.Shevade was the least prepared of all for the examination, and therefore all the students derided him. But he said that though he was not prepared, he was sure to pass the examination, as his Sai Baba was there to get him through it successfully. Mr.Sapatnekar was surprised at this remark. He took Mr.Shevade aside and asked him who this Shirdi Sai Baba was whom he ex-tolled so high. He replied - "There lives in a Masjid in Shirdi (Ahmednagar District) a fakir. He is a great Sat-purusha. There may be other saints, but this is unique. Unless there is a great store of merits on one's account, one can't see Him. I fully believe in Him, and what He says will be never untrue. He has assured me that I will pass definitely next year and I am confident that I will get through the final examination also with His grace." Mr.Sapatneker laughed at his friend's confidence and jeered at him and Shirdi Sai Baba. Sai Ram. The one who jeered, later cheered Baba! Let us see that chamatkar. Sai Ram.
