BACKGROUND FOR THE TEACHER

Robert E. Lee is the biography of the Confederacy’s

military commander during the Civil War. The

book spans Lee’s life from childhood to his days as

President of Washington College in Lexington, VA. • The South’s economy was based primarily on

agriculture. Large farms called plantations raised
