Who are we?The GA is a lively subject association with aproud history of innovation and anunrivalled understanding of geographyteaching. Most members join the GA for theadvice and resources they need every day inthe classroom. Many enjoy closerinvolvement, by volunteering for specialinterest working groups, sharing their skillsand experiences with fellow teachers andhelping drive the GA and geographyforward.

What do we do?The GA promotes, supports and developsgeography subject leadership at all levels, from new teachers in their initial training togeography subject leaders in primaryschools and heads of department insecondary schools.

What’s so special aboutgeography?Geography helps us make sense of theworld. It tackles the big issues:environmental responsibility; our globalinterdependence; cultural understandingand tolerance; commerce, trade andindustry. Strong, purposeful and enjoyablegeography is essential to any school orcollege curriculum.

ISBN 978-1-84377-166-1The keystone of a geography department’ssupport for its staff. Here Editor DavidBalderstone outlines its underlying philosophy:

‘The role of this new Handbook is twofold:to inspire and support the professionallearning of geography teachers, and topromote worthwhile and stimulatinggeographical learning for students.

‘The content covers all the areas bothexperienced and beginning teachers andstudents need – from “what’s the point ofgeography?” through all the skillsof teaching and learning, assessment, inclusivity andprofessional development. Asgeography teachers we arelearners too: learning about thesubject, about how students learnand about how to set upworthwhile learning activities, soour classrooms are collaborativelearning communities. The ideasand principles suggested in thebook offer starting points to guidefurther development and supportprofessional learning.

‘The contributors are drawn

from the rich diversity of geography educators– in school, teacher education, higher educationand the advisory service. What unites them isthe geography “community of practice”. Theyeach bring to the book their own experience, imagination and unique ideas; however, theyalso draw strength from the support theyreceive from our subject community indeveloping this contribution. This communityof practice, and the collaboration it supports, are of critical importance to this book – and tohelping school geography realise its trueeducational potential.’

£27.99 (non-members)ISBN 978-1-84377-095-4Enquiry is an integral part of the geography

tested in the classroom.Enquiry is presented as a process

in which students are actively engagedin constructing geographicalknowledge. At the same time as

emphasising student involvement, MargaretRoberts sees a crucial role for teachers in:• stimulating curiosity• promoting a critical, questioning attitude

towards data• providing opportunities for students to

explore new ideas and information forthemselves

• encouraging students to reflect on bothwhat and how they have learnt.

Learning through Enquiry explores how andwhy enquiry has been incorporated into thegeography curriculum and emphasises the roleof language in learning through enquiry.Chapters on literacy and numeracy provideguidance and practical examples to supporttheir development alongside the developmentof geographical understanding.

Methods of StatisticalAnalysis of Fieldwork Data Peter St John and Dave Richardson Post-1664 pagesPrice £9.99 (GA members), £14.50 (non-members) Much fieldwork data is collected in the form ofnumerical quantities, and at a higher level it isoften desirable to further manipulate this inorder to present a precise statement as to thesimilarities and differences and its validity. Thisis best achieved through the use of statistics.

The book provides help for students inselecting the most suitable method ofstatistical analysis to apply to their fieldworkdata and guidance on conducting the chosentest. Examples, ideas and guidelines are givenfor each method.

This text is aimed at A-level geographersand biologists who are required to applystatistical tests to validate their analyses, butwho are not necessarily first-classmathematicians!

Methods of PresentingFieldwork Data Peter St John and Dave Richardson Post-1680 pagesPrice £9.99 (GA members), £14.50 (non-members)

Fieldwork plays an important part in anygeography, biology or environmental studiescourse. Presenting the results in anappropriate manner may be as important ascollecting the data itself.

Aimed at teachers and A-level studentsthis book will encourage confidence in the useof various methods and enable students to usetheir imagination in selecting the mostappropriate techniques for the type of datathey have collected.

The book provides detailed guidance on awide range of methods including fieldsketches, flow diagrams, barcharts andhistograms, pie graphs, transects and maps.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) arethe most powerful set of tools in existencefor the analysis and visualisation of spatialinformation, and GIS is central to theapplication of geography to real-worldproblem solving. Its growing importance is

reflected in the new A-levelspecifications, all of which includemodules that revolve aroundteaching and understanding of methodsof geographical investigation. GIS for A-levelgeography, written specifically for secondarylevel education, offers A-level geographystudents an accessible introduction toindustry-standard GIS.

Produced in collaboration with ESRI(UK), the UK's leading GIS provider, andincluding ArcView 9.2 software with a 12-month licence plus a DVD of digital mapdata for England, Peter O’Connor’s new book is a complete guide to the theory andapplications of GIS, with five practicalexercises, described step-by-step.

The web resourcesActivities using the photographs areavailable on the website(www.geography.org.uk/adifferentview).These will be an ongoing resource: we’llkeep adding to them, and we know that‘out there’ hundreds – maybe thousands –of talented teachers have developedinnovative and creative ways of teachinggeography that enliven their lessons andengage and enthuse their students. We’d bereally grateful if you could let us know howyou would use these images – or, if you’vegot images of your own that you’ve used to

make good geography, we’d be delighted ifyou’d share them with us!

A different view shows the thinking thatunderpins the development of a qualitygeography provision. To help you developthis in your own school you will findpractical advice and links to supportingresources on the website, plus ideas andways to use this manifesto in a wide varietyof contexts, from early years to post-16 withchildren and young people, parents, governors and school leaders.
