Teachtaireacht ón Uachtarán As Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, I would like to welcome you to Croke Park for this year’s GAA Games Development Conference.

This year’s conference is entitled ‘‘Optimising Playing Performance – Nurture the Culture of Skill and Will’. This years Conference will focus more on the coaches adult players, with subsequent years looking at issues facing coaches of children and youth players.

I would like to thank all of the guest speakers who will present on over 20 important topics which will shape, challenge and drive the future development of our games. Like you, I look forward to hearing some of these valued opinions and perspectives.

I would like to acknowledge our sponsors, Lucozade Sport, for their input into this event. I would also like to recognise the contribution from our sister Associations, Cumann Peil Gael na mBan, Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael, Cumann Liathróid Láimhe na hÉireann and Comhairle Cluichí Corr. Your ongoing contribution to this Conference has strengthened the partnerships between our Associations and proves the old adage ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’ to be correct.

Finally, I would like to thank you, the delegate. Last year over 800 delegates from 9 countries made the journey to the Conference and – as a result created our biggest and best GAA Games Development Conference to date. Your support, participation and attendance is crucial in ensuring the success of this event and we look forward to welcoming you to Croke Park.

The 2009 GAA Games Development Conference - sponsored by Lucozade Sports - was launched by Uachtarán Criostóir Ó Cuana in Croke Park.

Top Names

Some of the top names in Gaelic Games management and coaching will be involved in the GAA’s annual National Games Development Conference – “Optimising Playing Performance – Nurturing a culture of Skill and Will” – which will take place on Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st, in Croke Park.

This is the 7th annual Conference, and aims to address issues that are of most concern and interest to members of the GAA community.

Run in conjunction with the GAA Coach Education Programme and sponsored by Lucozade Sport, the two day conference will

offer the 800 delegates attending an opportunity to access talks relating to key coaching issues in both football and hurling.

Launching the Conference, Úachtarán Criostóir Ó Cuana siad ‘“The central theme of this year’s Conference will emphasise the importance of the coach creating a platform for our players to optimize their playing performance. Ensuring that all players, regardless of their level of ability are provided with the opportunities to develop is a key component of what the GAA is all about and I’m looking forward to hearing from a number of the expert speakers on how this can be achieved.”

The list of speakers represents the most impressive gathering of individuals involved with coaching and games development ever assembled for an event of this nature and there is already massive interest in the Conference.

Liam SheedyLiam Sheedy is the manager to the Tipperary Senior Hurling team, Munster Champions 2008 and 2009, and defeated All Ireland Finalists 2009. A native of Portroe Co Tipperary, Liam

guided Tipperary to their 2nd consecutive Munster Senior Hurling title, before being defeated by Kilkenny in the All Ireland final in September.

Along with Liam Sheedy, Caroline will deliver a presentation on how communication impacts on playing performance, taking place on Saturday November 21st

Mickey Ned O’SullivanMickey ‘Ned’ O’Sullivan is manager of the

Limerick senior football team. As a player Mickey Ned captained Kerry to

win the All Ireland Senior Football title in 1975, although he didn’t collect the trophy as he had been knocked unconscious during the game and taken to hospital.

Mickey Ned was appointed manager of the Kerry Senior football team in 1990, winning the Munster Senior title in 1991.

Mickey was appointed manager of the Limerick Senior footballers in 2005.

Mickey Ned will present on Tactical Ploys in Gaelic football and how these can be developed taking place on Saturday November 21st.

Michael DempseyMick Dempsey is a selector with the Kilkenny Senior Hurling team, All Ireland champions 2006 - 2009.From the St Josephs club in Co Laois, Mick was a noted Gaelic footballer winning

the National Football League with Laois in 1986.

A former manager of the Laois Senior Football team, Mick joined the Kilkenny backroom team at the end of 2005.

Mick is employed as the Games Manager in Carlow and will form part of the forum discussion which will explore issues relating to playing performance taking place on Friday night November 20th.

Enda McNultyEnda played for the Armagh senior football

team from 1996 to 2009. He has played with the team right through their development to being All Ireland Champions in 2002, winning Ulster Senior medals in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and an All Star award in 2002.

Enda currently advises a number of world class athletes and rugby players, including World Athletics 200m finalist David Gillick and Leinster and Ireland rugby Internationals Luke Fitzgerald providing them with the necessary mental skills to achieve their potential.

Enda will deliver a presentation on how a players’ psychological skills combine with their playing abilities in ensuring top performance, taking place on Saturday November 21st

GAA Games Development Conference Speakers

Cian O’NeillCian O’Neill is a Lecturer in Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Limerick. A native of Moorefield, Co Kildare, Cian is the trainer to the Tipperary Senior Hurling team, Munster

Champions in 2008 and 2009 and defeated All Ireland Finalists 2009.

As a footballer, Cian represented Kildare at all levels, also excelling at Basketball.

Cian will deliver a presentation on the physical requirements of the modern day hurler, and how these can be best developed on the training field, taking place on Saturday November 21st

Paul PotracPaul is one of the leading researchers into

coaching and coach development. After holding teaching positions at the University of Otago, Brunel University, and Unitec New Zealand, Paul returned to take up the position of Lecturer in Coaching and Performance within the Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science at The University of Hull.

Paul has contributed to a number of the most widely read books on coach development including Understanding Sports Coaching and Sports Coaching Cultures both released in 2004.

Paul will deliver a presentation on the development of coaches, outlining various ways the coaches can improve their own performance, taking place on Saturday

Gary KeeganGary Keegan is the Director of High Performance management in the Irish Institute of Sport.

Gary spent 5 years as High Performance Director with the IABA's High

Performance Boxing Programme. Over a 5 year period Gary's programme achieved major European, World and Olympic success including 1 Silver and 2 Bronze at the Beijing Olympic games.

Gary will deliver a presentation on his experiences of developing performance with the IABA, including up to the Beijing Olympic games, taking place on Saturday November 21st

Aidan O’Connell

Aidan O'Connell was involved as trainer to the Cork Senior Footballers in 2009. From Ballyclough Co Cork, Aidan is employed as a strength and conditioning coach with Munster rugby. Educated at Sacred Heart College Carrignavar, Aidan has a Bsc in Sport Science from the University of Limerick and a MSc in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Edinburgh.

Aidan will deliver a presentation on the physical requirements of the modern day footballer, and how these can be best developed on the training field, taking place on Saturday November 21st.

GAA Games Development Conference Speakers

Tony HealyTony Healy is one of the major stars of Irish Handball. Alongside Paul Brady, they have dominated the 40 X 20 scene for almost a decade. The Ballydesmond clubman has won every title he can in Ireland in the

small court, and has won a USHA Collegiates crown and reached two world finals and a US Nationals final on the international stage. Healy recorded the biggest victory of his handball career when he defeated Seattle's Sean Lenning in the US Open of Handball final at Fountain Valley, California in 2008.

Tony is also a qualified Coaching Tutor, and delivers Coaching courses nationwide.

DJ CareyDJ Carey is generally recognised as one of the greatest hurlers to ever play the game. A native of Gowran Co Kilkenny, DJ played for the Young Irelands team. Carey’s status as one of the greats is self-evident. In a senior inter-county career that lasted for fifteen years he won five All-Ireland titles, ten Leinster titles, four National Hurling League titles and two Railway Cup titles with Leinster.

Along with Tony Healy and Enda Timoney, DJ will deliver a presentation on how the skills of handball are transferrable to hurling and Gaelic football for both men and women taking place on Saturday November 21st

Caroline CurridCaroline Currid is a performance coach working with a number of individual players – such as Paul O’Connell and International Kick Boxer Aisling McDermot as well as Tyrone Senior Football team (All Ireland

Champions 2008), Tipperary Senior Hurling team (All Ireland Finalists 2009).

Caroline is a native of Grange Co. Sligo. and played Gaelic Football for the County between 2003 and 2007.

Along with Liam Sheedy, Caroline will deliver a presentation on how communication impacts on playing performance taking place on Saturday November 21st

Rod ThorpeRod Thorpe (together with others at Loughborough university) most notably David Bunker, and including practising teachers, began to develop the Teaching Games for Understanding approach in the early 1970s.

Rod has been awarded the biennial International Olympic Committees Presidents Award - for Services to Sport, was inducted to the UK Coaching Hall of Fame (Dyson Award). He received the Munrow Award, given for his services to University Sport in the UK.

Rod will deliver a presentation on how the use of various types of games can be used to develop decision makers and encourage team ship within players, taking place on Saturday November 21st

Conference Dates

This is the 7th annual GAA Games Development Conference, and the 4th to be held in Croke Park stadium. This years Conference will take place on Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st.

Conference Structure

The 2009 Conference will be a combination of Key Note, Parallel Break Out sessions and practical Pitch Based sessions, involving noted speakers from Ireland and overseas as follows:

Friday, November 20th 7.30pm – 9.45pm

• Key Note presentation and open discussion forum

Saturday, November 21st 9.30am – 4.45pm

• A mixture of Key Note and Parallel sessions

The cost to each delegate is €75. This is inclusive of all meals and refreshments on the day and the delegate pack (value €150)

In addition to a comprehensive conference speaker programme, delegates will also be given the opportunity to view some the key products and services within the GAA marketplace. This will form part of an extensive purpose built exhibition showcase involving 20 companies which is designed to meet the needs of GAA conference delegates.

Services and products include coaching equipment supplies, synthetic pitches, GAA analysis products, floodlighting systems, injury management advice, hospitality services, sport nutrition advice and cardiac defibrillator systems.

The Exhibition Village has proved to be an extremely popular feature of the Conference with delegates and exhibitors alike.

GAA Zone

There will also be a dedicated GAA Zone where the GAA Associations – GAA, Camogie, Ladies Football, Handball, Rounders will have exhibition areas which will showcase the work of each of the Association. Here delegates will be able to meet those involved with each Association and find materials and support for each of the initiatives that are being rolled out throughout the Country.

Note: ‘Arrival Point: Hogan Stand Only’

Croke Park is situated in the north Dublin neighbourhood of Drumcondra and is bordered by Jones’s Road to the west, Clonliffe Road to the north, St. James Avenue to the east and the Royal Canal to the south.

CAR

Delegates driving from the City Centre, follow the signs for the N1 North onto Dorset Street and Drumcondra Road.

Turn right at ‘The Big Tree’ onto North Circular Road. Pass through two sets of traffic lights. Turn left at St Margaret’s Avenue (first left after Gills Pub) to access car parking.

If travelling from the Airport / North, follow directions for the city centre. Just before the railway overpass at the end of Drumcondra Road Lower, turn left onto Clonliffe Road.

At the next set of traffic lights, turn right onto Jones Road. Pass by the stadium on your left and at the traffic lights turn left onto North Circular Road.

Turn left at St Margaret’s Avenue (first left after turning off Jones Road) to access car parking

TRAIN

The closest railway station is Drumcondra at the intersection of

Drumcondra Road (N1) and Clonliffe Road, a 5 minute walk

from the stadium. This station is served by Arrow trains.

The closest DART stations are Connolly and Clontarf. Connolly Station is a 15-20 minute walk and Clontarf Station a 20-25 minute walk to the stadium.

The closest LUAS and Intercity Railstop is also at Connolly Station.

BUS From the city centre to

Drumcondra Road – No 3, 11, 11a, 16, 16a, and 41.

From the city centre to Ballybough Road / Clonliffe Road – No 123.

PARKING

As entry to the Conference is only through the Hogan Stand, the only parking available is in the Davin (Canal) End Car Park. This is located off the North Circular Road and accessed via St Margaret Avenue (first left after Gills Pub on the corner with Russell Street).

Pedestrian access is from the car park onto Jones’s Road for the main entrance to the Hogan Stand.
