Code of Professionalism Agreement (COPA) You should have already reviewed and printed a copy of this document for your records as part of the registration process for the Gabelli School of Business orientation program. We ask that you abide by the expectations outlined below: Professionalism

I will exercise the highest level of professionalism in all my interactions with recruiters, alumni and CDC staff, to reflect positively on myself and the school.

I understand breaches of professional conduct may result in the loss of access to CDC services. Attendance

I will arrive at least 10 minutes early to designated meeting areas for all CDC appointments and events. If I am late to an appointment or program, I realize I may not be allowed admittance.

I will attend any CDC appointment, event or program, which I have registered to attend. Cancellations must be made on CareerPath at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled time so that the opportunity can be offered to another student.

If I am unable to attend a previously scheduled on-campus interview, I will cancel my interview via CareerPath with at least 48 hours’ notice. There is no obligation on the part of the recruiter or CDC to reschedule any interview that I canceled.

I am aware of the attendance policies outlined on pages 15 – 16 of this handbook. Recruiting Standards

I will abide by published deadlines for job applications. My applications will not be forwarded to recruiters after a published deadline has passed.

I will wear appropriate formal business attire to CDC events, unless otherwise advised. I will turn off all electronic devices and give presenters my full attention during events. If I formally accept a job offer, verbally or by signing and returning an offer letter to an employer, I will

honor my commitment and refrain from applying to additional opportunities. I understand that reneging on a job or internship acceptance is considered unethical behavior, which may damage Gabelli School of Business relationships with employers.

I will keep a current version of my resume uploaded to CareerPath at all times. I will report all internship or full-time offer information to CDC by submitting details via CareerPath. I will complete the graduation survey.

Violations

I understand unprofessional behavior or violation of this agreement may result in my ineligibility to participate in on-campus recruiting activities and limit my access to CDC services.

Career Development Programming

The Career Development Center offers career-related programming throughout the academic year. These programs are designed to give you the tools needed for success in your job search. Programming takes the form of career development workshops, seminars and other career education events, which will be delivered through a number of methods including in-person and online via webinars. Career programming will cover the following topics:

1. Discernment, Exploration and Research 2. Marketing materials: resume; cover letter; LinkedIn profile, social media 3. Telling your Story (Pitch) 4. Networking and outreach 5. Applying and Interviewing 6. Closing an Offer

Career Development Workshops The CDC offers workshops to educate students about the various stages of the job search. Students are encouraged to attend CDC workshops, and small group advising sessions before scheduling one-on-one advising sessions. CareerSpotlight Series The CareerSpotlight panel discussion series is a CDC initiative providing students with relevant career education by highlighting a variety of industries and functions to help further their career exploration, discernment, and pursuit. These forums feature Gabelli School of Business alumni and corporate representatives who offer students insight on their respective career tracks, industry trends, and recruiting practices. Visit CareerPath for up-to-date general and registration information for upcoming CDC programming. Note CDC reserves the right to cancel or reschedule career development programs in instances where student registration is low.

Career Advising Career Development Center Advising Model The CDC utilizes a six stage job search approach to guide students who seek to secure internships and full-time jobs following graduation. Students are encouraged to take time for the investigation and reflection needed for the discernment, exploration and research stage. Next, students must prepare compelling marketing materials including a cover letter, resume and LinkedIn profile. Students must also be prepared to articulate their story and deliver a pitch to appropriate contacts encountered during the recruiting process. Appropriate networking and outreach is the next stage of the process. The interviewing and applying stage is critical for students to navigate in an organized fashion and it is recommended that students prepare in advance. The final step of the process is where students “close an offer.” Graduate business students, with the exception of those enrolled in the MBA cohort program, must meet with a Generalist Career Advisor during stages one and two of a job search. Once students have their materials prepared (stage one) and have begun to compile a target company list (stage two), then they are eligible to begin working with an Industry Specialist. At this point the CDC will update the list of career advisor who students can schedule appointments with. Students enrolled in the MBA cohort program will be assigned to an Industry Advisor prior to coming on campus. The Industry Advisor will work with students as they navigate all stages of the job search.

Career Advising Overview The Career Development Center offers you the opportunity to schedule career advising appointments with our staff. Appointments are available year-round in small groups and thereafter, individual sessions at our office (140 West 62nd Street, Suite 116). Small Group sessions allow you the opportunity to share and learn from (as well as network with) your peers, ask questions and apply information learned to your personal job search strategy. You should complement attendance after small group sessions or career development workshops with individual career advising sessions as your search requires.

Recruiting Overview

CDC is your connection to employers who are interested in recruiting graduate students from the Gabelli School of Business. The CDC recruiting program is designed to supplement your independent job search. You will use CareerPath to stay abreast of all Gabelli School of Business recruiting events for graduate business students, store your recruiting documents and internship and job offer information, and apply for internships and permanent jobs. Off-Campus Recruiting (Self-directed Search) Many companies do not participate in on-campus recruiting or maintain a presence on university campuses for a variety of reasons. To uncover the broad range of opportunities that reside at these organizations you will have to rely on some of your own investigative work and job boards such as GradLeaders and MBA-Exchange. An off-campus or self-direct search entails compiling a target company list, remaining informed of company and industry trends, current events and recruiting application deadlines, assuming membership in relevant professional associations, ensuring your approach and marketing materials are consistent with industry norms and vigorous networking. Off-campus recruiting requires a disciplined approach, but can help you find opportunities tailored to align with your goals, experience and skills.

Page 12: Gabelli School of Business Career Development Center Student … · 4. Networking and outreach 5. Applying and Interviewing 6. Closing an Offer Career Development Workshops The CDC

11

On-Campus Recruiting (Information Sessions, Target Events, and Interviews) Some recruiters visit the campus to present information about career opportunities at their firms during on-campus information sessions and target events. You are strongly encouraged to attend these events to network and learn about different career options. Recruiters often use these opportunities as a chance to meet potential candidates, so it is especially important that you attend the sessions of the employers with whom you would like to learn more about and dress appropriately in business formal attire. Keep in mind recruiters often take into account the level of student attendance and quality of student engagement at information sessions and target events as well as the overall number of hires at the end of each recruiting season to determine if they will return to recruit at our campus the following year. Information sessions are generally NOT opportunities to present your resume to recruiters, but rather an important way to learn more about a company and meet their recruiting (and professional) team in advance of formal recruiting. Your advanced preparation to familiarize yourself with the company (such as via company website, LinkedIn, investor presentations, earnings releases) will make the session more effective for you and may enable you to leave a favorable impression with company representatives (with insightful, targeted and well-presented questions and conversations appropriate to the level of a graduate student). Companies with established recruiting departments and formal entry level talent programs will post job opportunities on CareerPath and schedule a day to conduct interviews of Gabelli School of Business students on-campus (at the CDC office – 140 West 62nd Street, Suite 116). Students interested in applying to these positions should apply via CareerPath (and on the company’s website if so indicated) by submitting the appropriate application materials before the posted deadline. Employers may have designated criteria, such as degree programs, graduation dates and ability (or inability) to sponsor international students for positions outside of a student’s home country (in many cases, if such companies have a global footprint they strongly encourage students to apply for roles in their country of citizenship), which may affect your eligibility to apply. Recruiting criteria is established by employers, not by the Career Development Center. Recruiters will review application materials and invite students to interviews via CareerPath. No response from the employer means that you have not been selected to interview. If you have submitted your resume, you are expected to monitor CareerPath for updates or invitations to interview. After the first-round interview, the recruiters will follow-up directly with students regarding advancement to the next round of interviews.

Page 13: Gabelli School of Business Career Development Center Student … · 4. Networking and outreach 5. Applying and Interviewing 6. Closing an Offer Career Development Workshops The CDC

12

CareerPath Job Board Many more companies are interested in recruiting Gabelli School of Business students but do not come to campus to conduct interviews. These companies will choose to post graduate level job opportunities on CareerPath, and students may apply on CareerPath by submitting their application materials before the posted deadline. Recruiters will establish eligibility criteria for their respective job postings. Recruiters will review application materials, select students to interview, and contact those students directly to schedule an appointment to interview them at the company’s office (please remember to familiarize yourself with the travel necessary to the company’s office and allow extra time to check in at their lobby security clearance). No response from the employer means that you have not been selected to interview. Resume Books All students with an approved resume may elect to include their resumes in online resume books on CareerPath. Resume books will be distributed to employers who wish to utilize them to source talent for internship and job opportunities.

Recruiting Practices

On-Campus Information Sessions

Register on CareerPath to attend information sessions. Students are expected to wear business formal attire (see Appendix for examples). Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early and stay for the entire session. Students are encouraged to come prepared to ask thoughtful, relevant questions and to introduce

themselves to the company representatives if the occasion permits. Students will be respectful of the speaker, the Gabelli School of Business, and the other students

attending (e.g. mobile phones turned off, focused attention on and listening to the speaker; remove your trash before leaving the room, thank the speaker for the presentation if possible).

Interviews

Students are expected to have researched the company/industry, and come prepared with thoughtful questions relevant to the opportunity.

Students are strongly encouraged to practice their interviewing skills well BEFORE interviews. Students, who are scheduled for an interview on-campus, are expected to attend a CDC “Prep Session,”

if one is scheduled, which will provide insight into the company and its recruiting process. These sessions are typically held a day or two before the interview date. When possible, we invite a student or alum who has worked at the company and navigated the recruiting process to offer additional insight and practical suggestions.

Students must arrive in business formal attire at least 10 minutes prior to a scheduled interview. Students are advised to bring extra copies of their resume to all interviews. Students should collect contact information (business cards) from the interviewer(s) for follow up and

thank you emails. Students should plan to spend a few minutes debriefing with a CDC staff member after every on campus

interview.

Offer Policies

Students are encouraged to contact CDC immediately upon receiving an offer to be sure you are informed of appropriate procedures.

If a student reneges on an acceptance of employment, the Senior Director of CDC must be notified and will review the situation with the student. The Fordham faculty and administration consider reneging on an accepted offer to be unethical behavior.

Employers are prohibited from extending exploding offers, which gives students an extremely short window to accept an offer.

Ensure you are aware of the CDC’s offer policies, which employers must adhere to when recruiting our students. Keep these offer policies in mind as you receive offers from companies who recruit on campus.

Offer policies for full-time offers: Full-time offers extended to students as a result of a summer internship should remain open until

October 31, 2016. Full-time offers extended to graduating students during the fall recruiting process should remain

open until November 11, 2016, or for three weeks from the student’s receipt of the written offer, whichever comes later.

Full-time offers extended to graduating students during the spring recruiting process should remain open until March 1, 2017, or for three weeks from the student’s receipt of the written offer, whichever comes later.

Offer policies for summer internship offers: Internship offers extended during fall recruiting should remain open until November 11, 2016, or for

10 days from the student’s receipt of the written offer, whichever comes later. Internship offers extended during spring recruiting should remain open until March 1, 2017, or for

10 days from the student’s receipt of the written offer, whichever comes later.

Graduation Survey Upon graduation, it is mandatory that students complete the Graduation Survey in order to receive their diploma. The survey collects aggregate data on job placement which is essential for Fordham to be considered for inclusion in national rankings by the media. Individual student information is kept confidential.

Attendance Policies

The CDC Attendance Policy is designed to ensure that Gabelli students demonstrate the same level of professionalism and courtesy with commitments as is expected in the business world. Most CDC services and events require advance registration to attend. When you schedule a career advising appointment or register to attend a CDC workshop or program, you are committing to attend. If you become unable to attend, you must provide the courtesy of canceling your reservation in a timely manner, so that your attendance is not counted on, and to allow others to fill your spot. As in the business world, “no-shows” are considered an unacceptable breach of professional courtesy and repeat offenses will result in loss of access to certain CDC services and programs. You must check-in with a CDC staff member at events or career advising sessions to ensure your attendance is recorded properly, otherwise, your attendance will be deemed a “no-show.” CDC Career Advising, Workshop and Programming Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend any CDC career advising appointment, workshop or CDC event they register for via CareerPath. In the event a student cannot attend an appointment or workshop he/she has made, he/she must cancel his/her reservation at least 48 hours prior to the event. Cancellations should be made via CareerPath, however, students may cancel an appointment or workshop by emailing [email protected], if they are unable to do so via CareerPath at least 48 hours prior to the event. Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late to an appointment or CDC event will also be considered a ‘no-show’ and may not be seen by the career adviser or granted admission to CDC events. The FIRST time a student does not attend an advising appointment, workshop or CDC program and fails to cancel his/her registration, he/she will receive a warning by email. Students who miss either a career advising appointment, workshop or CDC program a SECOND time during a trimester will be put on ‘CDC Probation.’ Any student on probation will not be allowed to schedule advising appointments or register for CDC programs for 4 weeks. After the 4-week probation period has ended, the student will be restored to ‘good CDC standing’ and will be allowed to register for advising appointments, workshops and CDC programs. Any student who is put on CDC Probation twice during a trimester will not be allowed to participate in any CDC events for the remainder of the current term. The student must meet with a CDC Director before continuation of counseling services may be granted.

*Students are expected to honor all reservations they make for workshops, counseling appointments, programs, recruiting activities, and CDC special events. *If you cannot attend the appointment or event, you must cancel at least 48 hours in advance via CareerPath or by contacting CDC at 212-636-7796 or [email protected].

Attendance Policy for Career Advising Appointments, Workshops and CDC Programs 1st time No-show: Warning Student will receive a warning by email from CDC

2nd time No-show: Probation

Student will not be allowed to make counseling appointments or attend programs for four weeks.

At the end of the four-week period, the student will be returned to good-standing with CDC.

2nd Probation: Extended Suspension

Student will not be allowed to participate in CDC events for the remainder of the current term

In addition, the student must meet with a CDC Director before eligibility for CDC services may resume.

All resumes uploaded into CareerPath must be in Fordham format. How do I store a document? Click on the 'Documents' link in the header, and then click on the 'Add New' button. Enter a title for the document and click the 'browse' button. Find the file you wish to upload and double click on it. Select the type of document (resume, cover letter, etc.) and click the 'submit' button. If possible, you should save your document as a PDF before uploading it; this will make the process faster. If you can’t do this, then while the system converts the document into a 'pdf' format, the 'Status' column will read 'converting.' Once the document is converted to PDF format and ready to submit to employers, the 'Status' column will read 'ready.'

I tried to search for a job and my search came up blank – why? If your initial search does not produce a desired result, try altering your search criteria. Think about searching all industries if your initial search limited the industries, and be sure to read through all of the job function options to see if others might fit. New jobs and internships are added regularly, so the results of your search could be different in a matter of hours! I found a job I am interested in, but it says I am not qualified to apply - why? Some employers may choose to “screen” applicants based on specific quantitative criteria such as major or graduation date. If you do not meet the qualifications the employer is looking for, you will not be able to apply.
