Education Week 2016..."You Inspire!"

Peel public schools celebrate Education Week

Peel public schools will host hundreds of special activities and events to celebrate Education Week 2016 from April 18 to 22. The theme for this year's week-long focus on education is You Inspire. This year, Sir William Gage students and teachers will be celebrating Education week by Unleashing our Passions! Education Week will be Tuesday April 19-Thursday April 21, and students will have the opportunity to explore one passion of their choice over the three days. On Thursday April 21, families are invited to attend our Passions Showcase (6-7pm) that will display all of the great learning from the week! More information will be sent home closer to the date. Please refer to the permission form that was sent home on March 24 to learn more about the Passion activities that will be offered. Contact Andrea Lindsay or Sonia Zinn (ext 211) if you have any questions. Art Auction If you are a collector of fine art, then an Art Auction is the perfect place for you! The incredibly talented students of the Sir William Gage Middle School Visual Arts Club have been working extensively since the beginning of the year, creating outstanding pieces for your enjoyment! On Thursday April 21st at 6pm, you will have the opportunity to silently bid on these pieces. Fear not, there will also be prints and sets of greeting cards available for you to purchase. Please come out and support our Visual Arts Department.

Each year, more than 50,000 parents and community members across Peel attend activities and events during Education Week. We are looking forward to an equally successful week this year.

Festival of Literary Diversity in Brampton will shine the spotlight on diverse authors and books - May 6-8

Supporters currently mobilizing funds and promoting FOLD

Fed up of being either ignored or invited as the token panellist for diversity at literary festivals, Jael Richardson decided it was time to change the narrative. The Brampton author, who grew up in Mississauga, has planned a three-day Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD) May 6 to 8 in downtown Brampton. Book of Negroes author Lawrence Hill is among those that will be speaking at the event.

Richardson, FOLD’s artistic director, is currently promoting and mobilizing financial support needed to host the festival.

Jael Richardson came to speak to our Grade 8 students and will visit other grades during the month of April.

We are very excited to have her in our reading community.

Reminder about Dress Code at Gage At SWG, students are asked to dress in a manner that demonstrates respect for themselves and others. Students are expected to wear:

Shirts that cover their entire torso and undergarments and no longer than middle finger when standing straight

Shorts/skirts of a suitable length (i.e. when a student’s arms are by their sides the shorts/skirts should touch their middle finger with no undergarments showing as students use stairs

Tee shirts without questionable messages/logos/ captions Outdoor wear (gloves, hats, scarves, boots etc.) are not to be worn indoor

Reminders about Safe Arrival/Attendance at School At Sir William Gage, teacher supervision begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m. All students are expected to attend school

regularly. Students should be in line, ready to enter the building at 8:05 a.m. for morning entry and 12:29 p.m. for lunch entry. If your child will be late or absent from school, please contact our school attendance line at 905-456-3394. This line is dedicated to messages regarding late or absent students and is available 24 hours a day. When children return to school after an absence, they are responsible for connecting with their homeroom teacher and

their rotary teachers to "catch up" with any missed work or assignments. All classrooms have a section of the blackboard devoted to homework and assignment due dates and routines students follow when absent. Students that are late must have a note from a parent explaining the reason for being late.

Is your child missing more? Why does attendance matter? First, understand that getting to school–every day and on time–matters at every level, perhaps even more so in elementary school. That’s because important learning occurs daily, right from the start of class. And because you establish patterns early on. By being punctual and responsible, children are acquiring positive habits about school attendance. Some other things to consider:

By being late, children miss important social time with their peers before school begins.

Students who are late often feel embarrassed or self-conscious.

Late arrivals can disrupt the routine of the classroom.

A last-minute rush can be stressful for the child, and get her to school in the wrong frame of mind.

Missing even five or 10 minutes of the day can make it harder for the student to understand the material being taught.

Frequent absenteeism leads to gaps in a child’s skills and knowledge base, causes the child to fall behind his peers and hurt his self-esteem.

Too many missed school days can increase isolation, as the child stands out from her classmates and misses opportunities to develop socially.

Absenteeism makes it tougher for the child to develop a good rapport with the teachers. Ask your child’s teacher or principal to learn more about our school’s specific Kiss N’ Ride procedures. All evening programs and permits at the Peel District School Board are cancelled. This means that all activities in schools and Board offices are cancelled, including continuing education courses and events. The buildings will be closed.

Help your family stay warm this winter Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Invest in thick socks to keep your feet warm. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. A balanced diet will also help keep you warm and healthy in the winter.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

Sir William Gage goes pink on April 12 April 13 is Day of Pink, the international day to celebrate diversity and inclusion to work towards ending homophobia, transphobia and all forms of bullying and discrimination. This year, there are several bolded holy days taking place on April 13. In order to give all of our students an opportunity to be part of this important inclusion activity, Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink on April 12 this year. “Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.” Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion. On this day, students, staff and families from across Peel may wear pink and participate in a number of activities to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

Parent resources help you support your child’s learning At the Peel District School Board, our mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each child. There is no doubt that families play a vital role in helping us achieve this goal. As our partner in education, we hope you'll stay connected to your child's learning throughout his or her entire school experience. In October 2014, the Peel board sought input from families to help guide the development of resources that help parents and caregivers support their children’s learning. The result is a new Help Your Child online resource centre on the Peel board’s website with the topics families said were important to them. Visit www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild to explore all resources available to parents. There you will find easy-to-navigate buttons that connect families to tip sheets and web pages on a number of different topics, including math, homework, special education, EQAO and mental health.

Tentative school year calendars for 2016-17
