Gail Trendler, Recording Secretary

Hello, my name is Gail Trendler and I am the Recording Secretary for

2016-17. I am a relatively new member to the Troy Newcomers; I

joined during the summer of 2014, when I retired from my 38 year

career at GM. While at GM, I worked at the Powertrain Warren Plant

in Supply Chain Management and at the Warren Tech Center as a

Program Manager in the Design Center. I currently enjoy sleeping in! I

also love to play golf, tennis, and ski in the winter. My husband, Ron,

and I have two daughters; one who got married last summer and one

who recently purchased her first house. That house is really keeping

me busy, but it is a labor of love! In addition to my Newcomer activi-

ties I volunteer one day a week as a literacy tutor. I have enjoyed all

of the lunches and other activities with the Newcomers and look for-

ward to meeting more of the lovely ladies in this club.

“Happy New Year” to all. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a

wonderful Holiday Season.

I have been a Newcomer for going on five years now. I am original-

ly from Kansas (and no I do not know Dorothy). We moved to

Michigan in 1975 and a couple of years later I became active in Ma-

comb County Newcomers. I was membership chair and historian

before taking time off with a growing active family. My children

consist of Brian, Aaron, and Kristy and all their children. (Can’t for-

get their children which can keep you busy too.)

Years later I was introduced to Troy Newcomers. I have made so

many great friends, served on the board, and enjoyed the club’s

activities. I enjoy Euchre, games night, excursions, and of course

our monthly luncheons. Our many activities are a great way to

meet all of our great members.

I am currently Business Luncheon Secretary. I collect money for

our monthly Business Luncheon Meetings and give the final count

to our 1st VP of Programs, Gina. This is a great way to socialize, en-

Welcome Everyone to 2017!!

We are playing this month on Thursday, January 12 at 9:15 am at the home of Linda Marx. Linda lives in Troy (see direc-tory for address). Please RSVP to her by Tuesday, Jan 10, at 248-528-2826 or email at: [email protected]. If you are not a regular hostess, let Linda know if you wish to bring a breakfast item for that morning. We are beginner friendly and always looking for new people, so invite a new friend or come on by.

A Big Thank You to Amy Strnad for hosting in December and all that brought food! Hope to see everyone for a fun day of coffee, food, fun and laughter, and of course " Some Euchre Playing", if we can fit it in!!!

Susan Holle, Secretary

The Tuesday Morning Bowling League ended the calendar year with a Holiday Potluck on our last day. We enjoyed a variety of delicious dishes prepared by the bowlers. We brought in wrapped gifts and each bowler got to choose one when they bowled their first strike. Lots of fun was had by all!

After the holidays, we resume bowling on Tuesday, January 3rd. Please note that January 3rd is Position Day which means there is no pre-bowling and no subs are allowed.

Interested in improving your bowling game? Troy Lanes currently offers free bowling practice time to their league members on Mondays from 1-2pm and Tuesday evenings from 8-9:30pm. Any questions, please contact Troy Lanes at 248-879-8700.

We are in need of bowling subs. We bowl on Tuesday mornings at 9:30am at Troy Lanes. If you are interested in being a sub, please contact Susan Holle at [email protected].

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!

Wine Tasting

Jan Fuhrman, Activity Leader

Sure, you’re extremely busy now, but after the new year, your calendar may be empty. Looking for an evening to relax and enjoy some good wine and conversation? January Wine Tasting will be held on Saturday, January 14th at 7:30 at the home Ann and Jim Britton. If you plan to attend, please contact Ann at 248-740-0511 or [email protected] by Thursday, January 12th. Please bring your own wine glass and an appetizer to share.

Cost will be $10 per wine drinker.

Hope to see you there!

Happy New Year, may 2017 bring much happiness and blessings to you and your loved ones!

If one of your resolutions was to get organized and preserve family memories for the future, then this is the activi-

ty you have been looking for!

We will be meeting this month at the Scrapbook Tree at 23 Mile and Van Dyke to work on our books. Our meeting

date will be Thursday, Jan 5 and the room is open for “free cropping” time between 11-7.

Drop in any time, stay as long as you like, bring your lunch or buy lunch from one of the nearby restaurants. The

store provides a die-cut machine and has a full range of supplies available for purchase if you need something.

Please contact me if you plan to join us, the owners need to know how many in our group are expected so they

can seat us in a section that will accommodate everyone.

In February we will be planning an evening session so if you have not yet hosted our group this year and have

room for at least 4-6 ladies to work on their books please let me know. The hostess can choose the meeting date

and provides minimal refreshments.

Mah Jongg

Jane Egermann, Activity Leader

If your December was too full to fit in a morning of mah jongg, you are in luck for the month of January! Okay, maybe

it isn’t so lucky that our first mah jongg play date is Friday the 13th, but you could still come out of that day a winner.

(Must be present to win!) That play date will be at 9:30 am at the home of Jane Egermann.

If you’re not a morning person or are very superstitious, consider coming on Friday, January 27 at 1 pm. Same fun

game, just no treats served.

If you’ve never played the game (or even heard of it), no worries! We enjoy teaching new people and the game is

fairly easy to learn.

Please contact Jane at [email protected] or 248-879-5512 if you plan to come or need directions.

White Rose – November

Martha Brosseau – Membership Secretary

Even though her son has already graduated from U of M and her daughter is in her sophomore year at

Grand Valley, Martha didn’t really develop “empty nest syndrome” until after Halloween this year.

She’s not really sure what triggered it – it definitely was not missing the volunteer hours she used to

put in at Troy High managing the clinic schedule, buying supplies and working there.

Husband Mike is not travelling as much but is still highly occupied with business. His company will be

opening a place in Silicon Valley next year and Martha is looking forward to touring around the wine country. They will spend some

time in Florida in the spring and be in California for a wedding. They are also looking forward to doing more snowmobiling this year

in Indian River.

In addition to managing our membership rolls, preparing and distributing the directory and reporting regularly to the Board and

membership, Martha participates in bowling, luncheons, games night, daytime euchre (sometimes nighttime too) and winetasting.

She has recently started using essential oils.

Thank you, Martha, for your work on behalf of our club.

Dawn Hoyer - Service

Dawn claims she “leads a really dull life” and told me I could just recycle whatever I wrote about her two years ago. Of course that

would negate one-year-old grandson Michael and her second grandchild (girl) due in January. Somehow, I don’t think that was what

she had in mind.

Dawn has been an active member of Troy Newcomers for 21 years participating in bowling, ushering, luncheons and serving in vari-

ous Board positions. She has particularly enjoyed working with this year’s sponsored family. We will be having a diaper drive and

sponsoring the same family for Easter celebrations.

She still enjoys heading up to Cadillac to her family tree farm. Although she no longer hunts, other members of her family do. One

of her longest standing commitments (27 years) is to serving meals to the community at the Cadillac fire house on Thanksgiving and

the day after.

Thank you, Dawn, for encouraging our club members to share your calling to service.

Red Rose – January newsletter

Marge Duhart and Margaret Hatton– co-chairs Luncheon 50/50

Marge joined Newcomers because she met so many people at Curves and the Community Center gym who talked about the various

activities. She wanted to get in on the fun! After belonging for a while she introduced Margaret (whom she knew from church) to

the group. In the past, they served on the Board planning luncheons and now attend most of them to conduct the 50/50 ticket sales.

Marge has also served as co-chair of service in the past and volunteers for cake baking and “other help” as needed. She said,

“There’s always something going on that you can get involved in.”

Marge babysits for her 17-month-old great-grandson one day a week and thoroughly loves it. Margaret volunteers in the Royal Oak

Beaumont gift shop. Marge and husband James enjoy traveling – a good thing as this past year they had graduations in Nashville and

Colorado, went to Ohio for a wedding, will visit their daughter in California after Christmas and will be in Mexico with their daughter

from Colorado in March. Margaret and husband Charles “mostly travel to see grandkids,” a process made somewhat easier by one

of their daughters returning to Michigan. They have four grandchildren: twins age 12 and a 21 and 23-year-old both in college. Mar-

garet is also active in St. Thomas More church and will be coordinating funeral luncheons there next year. Thank you, Marge and

Margaret, for keeping this luncheon tradition going.
