Introduction
There isn’t anyone on the planet who likes having
acne! It looks awful, it can painful and no amount
of makeup seems to work in covering it up.
For most sufferers there is a problem with image.
No-one likes having red swollen areas on their
face. Most people who have acne are very self
conscious of their appearance and how they look
to other people.
Usually it is a direct blockage of hair follicles which
can result in acne. Hormonal changes and even
genetics may play also play a role. For some of us there is no simple solution on
how to effectively treat acne. Some people have tried everything medically
possible and the acne has always returned. Most of the time acne will occur
during the teenage years and can continue on into the mid 20's. For some people
they may suffer from acne well into their thirties and forties. Some of the more
severe cases become like cystic acne. This can be very uncomfortable for the
person suffering from this condition. The pimples appear more like boils and can
show up on the face, neck, armpits and back.
In this book we will go over some topical medicated acne treatments which
consumers advise others to steer clear of.
We will also look into more natural approaches for curing acne. If you have
suffered from acne and have known both sides of the coin, you may already be
aware that natural methods may be the only cure. When all else fails return back
to Mother Nature. She always seems to have the answers in treating our bodies
and skin in the best and healthiest ways possible.

Rx Medications For Acne
Medicated skin treatments,
prescription medications and the latest
television cures have been tried and
still without any real success.
If you visit the doctor with acne
problem skin most of the time he or she
will give you a prescription of
Tetracycline or Minocycline and Doxycycline which are the oral antibiotics most
commonly used for the treatment of acne.
While Rx medicines seem to resolve the problem for awhile most people find the
acne reappearing after a few months. The condition is called “gram-negative
folliculitis” when a patient has been on a series of antibiotics and the bacterium
resists the treatments. These types of acne skin conditions usually become worse
and the doctor has to switch the treatments around or suggest another form of
treatment.
With the problems of long term medications, you might be asking yourself what
are the side effects of being on antibiotics for acne? Is it really worth it?
What other treatments can I try?
With each medication we take internally there are always risks and side effects.
One of the side effects of long term use of Tetracycline can be a super infection in
the body due to an overgrowth of resistant organisms. Another side effect can be
yellowing of the teeth and in rare cases auto-immune diseases can develop as the
patient ages. http://community.qvc.com/forums/beauty-banter/topic/88459/doctor-prescribed-long-term-
tetracycline-for-acne.aspx

There are plenty of people who are
sick of being on the acne medication
merry-go-round. They are also tired of
chemicals on their skin or the oral
medications which are now delivering
side effects to their health.
Many people do not realize when
medications are released as the latest
and greatest cures; they are only as good of the claim until people become
seriously ill.
* The world wide weight loss treatment of Garcinia comes to mind. Right now it is
the biggest selling weight loss treatment in the world. To sell Garcinia,
manufacturers and distributors will produce old medical reports dated from 2004.
These reports tell the public the product is safe and great to use. However if you
were to research the medical journal reports of 2008, you would find that certain
medical professionals believe that HCA is the primary component of MANY weight
loss supplements in the market. The toxicity profile of HCA is poorly studied. The
key ingredient of Garcinia is Hydroxy Citric Acid or (HCA) and there have been
case reports of the possible synergistic involvement with montelukast, which lead
to fatal hepatotoxicity. The end results were liver transplants, deaths and bed
ridden consumers.
While HCA has nothing to do with people suffering from acne, this example does
prove that we all need to do a little more personal research when it comes to
ingesting long term medications into our bodies.
So what now? Let’s explore over the counter treatments on the market versus the
more natural approach. Maybe it’s time to discover what you may have at home
in the cupboard, which can defiantly help you treat acne better than any other
type of chemical medication.

Acne Products That Do
Not Work As Claimed
Products in acne products like salicylic acid, sulfur,
or benzoyl peroxide will definitely dry out the skin.
When you have acne, drying out the skin only
makes the situation worse. Your skin will only
produce more oil to replace any lost. What you will
end up with is sensitive, sore and oily skin.
Neutrogena Products
Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Foam Wash
Many people have different and mixed results with
this cleanser. Some people said "it didn’t really help me” and others complained
about having “more acne problems rather than helping them.”
Other people who tried these products believe that their skin only became more
inflamed after using the Neutrogena skin care products on their skin.
Redness, flaky skin and dry patches were also issues that many people were
suffering from. The power foam wash seemed to actually aggravate the acne
more. In one case the consumer tried the product for four weeks with worse
problems within this time frame.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub
If smells pretty it may not work. The high
concentration of aroma may actually
cause allergic reactions and often will.
Fragrance is a very questionable
ingredient to add into any acne
treatment. When you have a product that
already has ingredients in it which will dry
out the skin, adding any type of scent to
the product is like adding salt into an
open wound. It will sting and scold.
Here are some of the comments people made about this scrub "pretty scent does
not a good cleanser make," or "if you don't want a hideous, puffy, sunburned-
looking face, don't use this." Since we have already discussed how sensitive oily-
acne skins can be, my best advice is to stay away from lovely smelling products.
Neutrogena - Rapid Clear 7 Day Acne Intervention Kit:
Again the main ingredient in this product is the salicylic acid and alcohol which
will dry out your skin and only aggravate red and sore acne marks. If you want
even worse oily skin, keep using products like this.
ZAPZYT Maximum Strength Acne Treatment Gel
Many women have complained the product is very strong on the skin. There is
10% benzoyl peroxide in this product which dries the skin out. Other people have
claimed that the product actually did nothing to help their acne.
You see, on TV we see a lot of glamour and happy faces using acne products that
just don’t work as they claim.

Murad
Murad Acne Spot Treatment
For the price of the product many people have said the spot
treatment should work better than it does. The smell is bad like
rotten eggs and this is more than likely related to the 3% sulphur.
Other women have said that it’s hard to apply make-up over the
spot treatment because it is like a thick and chalky substance when
it dries and then cracks on the skin.
Murad Gentle Acne Treatment Gel
The main ingredient in this gel is salicylic acid. There are so many acne products
on the market that contains this ingredient; so why does this gel cost as much as
it does at $44.00 for a little tube? There have been complaints of bigger pimple
problems, hardly any improvement and leaving a residue on the skin. It makes the
skin look shiny when it dries. There is very little or if any improvement in clearing
up the skin.
Clean & Clear Invisible Blemish Treatment
This product can be found in just about any grocery or department store across
the USA. The product does almost nothing according to teenagers and adults that
have tried it.
For women applying make-up the blemish treatment is not easy to work with. It
will turn the make-up flaky and glob up into balls on the skin. The ingredients
contain salicylic acid and alcohol which is a double recipe for dryness and peeling
skin. Expect some sore skin with a double whammy of harsh chemicals.

Proactiv
Proactiv Repairing Treatment
Proactive has been endorsed by many
celebrities who claim the product did
wonders for their skin.
The story seems to be very different with
consumers. They have said proactive acne
products smell of strong chemicals. There are many acne sufferers who believe
the product is toxic. One woman commented that proactive bleached her
pillowcase and clothing. That’s a big wow and it makes you wonder what is really
in the products! You might want to reconsider using proactive on your face.
Burt's Bees - Natural Acne Solutions
Eucalyptus and Fennel are two natural products that people with acne should
never use. They can definitely irritate the skin. When these two herbs are used
together they create redness and more oil production on the skin. Eucalyptus oil
is great for colds and bronchitis but on the skin? This oil will actually create a
longer healing time on skin.
University Medical Acne Free Clear Skin System
There seems to be tiny granules through this product. Most people would
normally find gritty bits in a facial mask and not in a cleanser. Why would anyone
want to use a gritty cleanser?
Other people have complained “the cleanser didn't seem very strong and wasn't
able to do the job” it was designed for. Another comment was that the “skin looks
shiny” after the application.

Clinique Acne Solutions Post Blemish Formula
Clinique is known for their high price skin care treatments. The post blemish
formula will run you about $28.00 and will last for about 2 weeks. There have
been reports of re-breakouts. The so-called fading scar tissue did not work as well
as the company claims. The consumers were not very impressed and basically saw
no change on blemishes and spots.
Avon - Clearskin
This has been branded a harsh detergent type product for your skin. There a four
BHA options in the product but actually not one of them works to help the
balance of the pH in the skin. Consumers have called these products a potential
disaster for the skin.
There is salicylic acid in the cleanser which is something. Most of the time, the
person will wash the product off too quickly before it can do the job properly.
The Less Irritating Over The Counter Products
We have a couple of products that rated the highest over the other solutions but
these two products also have natural ingredients in them. Maybe that’s why
consumers found them less agitating on the skin.
Kiehl's - Blue Herbal Collection
These are strong irritants that do not help anyone suffering from acne. One of the
ingredients in this mix is aluminum chlorohydrate which is an ingredient found in
antiperspirants. The reactions that a lot of people may suffer from are; dry flaky
skin, increased oil production, sore skin and redness.
12 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
Many people are aware that cinnamon and ginger are great for footbaths,
circulation and relieving sore achy joints. I will admit there is something to be said
about reducing oil in the skin by using ginger and cinnamon.
Mixing the above two herbs with something like aluminum chlorohydrate, makes
this product a herbal acne solution? Prices range from $18.00 to $25.00
Dermalogica - Clean Start System
Irritating ingredients used with other natural solutions work? Camphor is a harsh
ingredient acne sufferers should not use. Bitter orange can also irritate the skin if
you are already sensitive. The product actually has a better rating than most but
when it is combined with camphor and orange together, well that’s questionable.
These two ingredients can lengthen the healing process of an already red, sore
and oily skin.

Diet Is Very Important Some doctors and skin specialists may
tell you that diet doesn’t affect acne.
“It’s just hormones and it will all go
away in time.”
I strongly disagree with the above
statement because of my own
personal experiences.
Green leafy vegetables and fruits are
full of polyphenols, antioxidants and essential nutrients that our bodies need to
repair any infection or bad bacteria’s (like acne) that are present.
Polyphenols are specific chemicals found in plants. You can find these amazing
antioxidants in things like sage, broccoli, green teas, peaches, blueberries, grapes,
pears and fruits that are red and plum in color. These special ingredients are not
just antioxidants but rather polyphenols work to help the body resist infection
and disease. For people who have serious illnesses polyphenols are proving to be
invaluable ingredients to repair and heal our bodies. Doesn’t eating good food
just make sense anyway? http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/79/5/727.full
Some acne can actually be caused through a lack of nutrition. You may have a zinc
deficiency and do not know about it, so get a blood test and find out.
You may also have a certain allergy to food which can cause stomach problems.
You might be lactose intolerant or have a wheat allergy. These allergies can play
havoc with your immune system, cause bloating and show up on your face in the
way of acne.
14 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
It makes perfect sense that your body is just having a reaction to something it
cannot handle. Your skin is the largest organ on your body and it stands to reason
that allergies and toxins have to be released somewhere. The pores on your skin
are perfect places to get rid of these poisons.
Your doctor will tell you to drink more water when you have a flu or virus, then
why not apply the same reasoning for skin and bacterial infections such as acne?
Drink more water because it is very good for the skin!
Clean water can help your body cleanse itself of toxins and keeps our kidney
healthy. Six good sized 8oz glasses of water everyday can be a very healthy thing
for you to do.

Natural Remedies For
Acne We have gone over the over the counter remedies for acne, the Rx prescription
medications and diet. So far what has come to light is the fact many people are
not happy with the use of chemicals on their skin, or being put on antibiotics for
long periods of time. The money aspect of buying a counter medication along
with prescriptions is a high cost.
Trying homemade remedies is not only cheaper but you have the added bonus of
knowing exactly what you are putting on your skin! Some of these products you
may already have in the home. You would be surprised what is kept in the kitchen
cupboards. These simple products can greatly improve the health of your skin.
You already know that acne tends to make your skin very sensitive. Bumps and
redness around the swollen area is tough on most of us. No-one likes acne and I
too have suffered from it as a teenager and into my twenties. I was still
developing pimples well into my early thirties before it finally went away. So I
completely understand how people feel about this kind of condition.
I have used the over the counter products, took Tetracycline meds and I still had
nasty pimples appear. How did I eventually overcome the problems with acne? I
dramatically changed my diet, drank lots of water and turned to natural methods
to clear up my skin and they worked!
I now have 2 teenage sons 14 & 15 and we are doing the more natural approach
with their skins. From time to time both of the boys have issues but it is very
manageable now. Every day they clean their faces with homemade remedies that
have worked great! There are some natural remedies below.
16 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
Sugar and Milk Solution For Blackheads And Spots
2 teaspoons of Milk (from a carton or jug)
2 teaspoons of sugar (you need the granules as a scrub)
1/4 teaspoon of Nutmeg
½ teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar
The milk is soothing for the skin and the lactic acid in milk will also help to peel
away those dead skin cells. The sugar granules help to clean grit and dirt out of
the pores. Nutmeg takes the excess oil off the skin. The apple cider acts like an
astringent and pH skin balancer.
Add all the ingredients together until you have a light to medium paste forming.
You can use the paste in 2 ways. You can use it as a mask to clean your skin and
blackheads or use it as a great treatment for spots.
Spot Treatment: Just leave it on the spot for about 5 minutes or until dry and
then wash off. It’s that’s easy!
Alternative ingredients which can be used to replace ingredients above
Baking soda can replace the nutmeg
(I would use the baking soda sparingly because of the high pH value it has)
Sour cream and water can replace the milk
Salt can replace the sugar
Lemon Juice can replace the Apple Cider
**I will suggest you take it easy on the lemon juice and I believe that the Apple
Cider will do a better job than the lemon juice.
Some people may be too sensitive to use the Lemon because of the acidic value. If
a person will have sensitivity to orange juice or peel on their skin then the
likelihood of lemon juice will possibly have the same effect.
17 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
Honey Moisturizer
I /2 teaspoon is all you will need.
Honey is one of the best healing agents for wounds, infections and cuts. It goes
back as far as the Egyptians using honey to treat their sick. Soldiers in WW1 had
honey placed over their wounds to help keep the wound clean and prevent
infection. Honey acts like a secondary skin and also helps to repair scar tissue.
Place a small amount of honey over your skin in the morning after washing your
face with the water and apple cider. Take a minute or two and massage into the
pores. Who cares if it’s sticky because you are going to have healthy beautiful
skin. Don’t be in a rush to do this. When you are finished massaging the honey
into the skin, rinse it off.
Honey also moisturizes the skin and doesn’t leave your face feeling all greasy or
dry like other moisturizers can. Check out the section on unrefined coconut oil as
a moisturizer. Two great products that can help the skin retain its natural
moisture.
Apple Cider Astringent
Apple Cider Vinegar contains both contains malic and lactic acids and is one of the
best ways to clean your skin of bacteria. You can use undiluted apple cider to
problem areas or you can use a spray bottle and make your own mist spray.
Apple Cider Vinegar will help to balance the pH in the skin. Undiluted Apple cider
vinegar has a pH of approximately about 4.25 which is very close to your own skin
pH and diluted apple cider will drop down to a pH of 3.
You can use apple cider morning and night. If you notice that twice a day is too
much on your skin then cut down to night time applications.
18 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
Mix up this solution:
Small spray bottle (you can pick these up in just about any dollar store)
1/3 cup alcohol free witch hazel
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/3 cup spring water
Keep all portions in even amounts so it’s not overpowering. If the apple cider is
still too strong then cut down ¼ cup.
Why am I suggesting only using spring water? This is mainly because it is less
likely to have impurities in it. Tap water has a lot of nasty chemicals in these days
and more people are using spring water to wash their faces in. If you have a well
and the water has a high alkaline pH you are very fortunate. Alkaline water is
excellent for ailments so splashing this all over your face, is Kudos’s in your favor.
Other Alternative Herbal Treatments
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil originally came from Australia. Many of the Aboriginal people would
take the leaves, boil them up and use the paste on wounds and abrasions. It is a
great cleanser and disinfectant, anti-fungal remedy for the skin.
Tea Tree oil will not cause as many side effects on the skin as say benzoyl
peroxide would. Actually for moderate acne sufferers tea tree oil can be even
more effective than the other over the counter chemical solutions.
Aloe Vera Juice
This is more for the healing properties in scarred skin. Aloe Vera is known as a
great treatment for sore and sunburn skin. If you have a plant around the home
you can cut a piece off and rub it over your skin.
19 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are 95% water. They also have a cooling and healing effect on the
skin. If you have red and sore areas on your face then cut up a few cucumber
slices and lightly press them over the affected area.
Cornstarch And pH Skin Levels
Cornstarch can be a very soothing
product on the skin. It also absorbs extra
oils on the skin. You can add a little water
and mix up into a paste and apply over
your skin. Leave the mask on for about 5
to 10 minutes and rinse off. Some people
even sleep with cornstarch on their faces
overnight although with acne I wouldn’t
recommend this.
The pH skin scale works pretty much
like this:
1 is acidic
14 is alkaline.
7 is neutral
Your skin is approximately a pH of 4.5 to 5, while the blood is approximately
neutral at 7. The acidic and alkaline levels in our bodies are important to
remember. Finding out what kinds of products can be used safely; will be the
difference between burning and healing the skin.
Baking soda on the skin?
I have read of people using baking soda as masks on their skin. We don’t use it on
the boy’s skin. Baking soda is a high 9 pH so you make up your own good
judgment on using it. I tend to think acne skin is already aggravated and sensitive
so why tempt fate?
20 | T o p N a t u r a l C u r e s F o r A c n e T h a t W o r k B e t t e r T h a n M o s t D r u g s
Unrefined Coconut Oil
Research in the last few years has shown
coconut oil to be an amazing healing agent. It is
both antifungal and antibacterial. It will not
produce more oil on the skin.
Coconut Oil contains a high level of saturated
fatty acids like lauric acid. These very important
acids fight infections and bacteria.
Not only will coconut oil fight bacteria on your
skin but it helps to reduce that soreness. Look for unrefined coconut oil when
purchasing to make sure you have the best and most effective product.
Replace all your chemical type moisturizers with coconut oil!
Besides honey, unrefined coconut oil has a whole host of health benefits. Coconut
Oil and Honey are very good moisturizers, so why not try both products and see
which one works best for your skin.
Coconut milk is also good to drink. It will stabilize the electrolytes in your body.
There are so many nutritional benefits to drinking coconut milk that most people
are simply not aware of.
Coconut oil can be ingested. For people who are sensitive to certain foods or
have allergies, unrefined coconut oil does not contain allergen compounds that
many of today’s foods do.
Unrefined coconut oil can also be used to replace regular cooking oil. So you see
there are all kinds of great uses for a person to be using this wonderful and totally
natural product.

Steam Baths And
Blackhead Help
Twice a week we will add a steam
bath / scrub to Jason’s skin
routine for two to five minutes.
You can create your own steam
bath by placing your face over a
bowl of hot water. Throw a towel
over your head and around the
bowl. Do not put your face into
the water; just let the steam rise
up into your pores.
Steam definitely helps to open up
the pores for better cleaning.
We will use the Milk and Sugar Scrub Recipe for the purpose of removing Jason’s
blackheads. This scrub does work and his skin feels really clean and fresh after we
are done. It is way better than using that horrible blackhead remover he calls the
“torture instrument.”
Work the scrub around in circular motions. Apply only a small amount of pressure
to the affected areas. Do not rub hard because there is a chance you can damage
your skin with vigorous rubbing.
Continue lightly scrubbing for a few minutes and then wash off your face with
cold water. Steam opens the pores up and cold water closes them.

Jason and Liam’s Skin Routine
My 14 year old son Jason tends to get a lot of blackheads on his nose. Keeping the
oil under control is very important. I also found that keeping the oil down around
his hairline and chin was important for keeping the pimples from re-developing.
The 15 year old gets mostly pimples around his chin area, with the occasional one
showing up around the hairline on the side of his face.
We also found the blackheads were pretty stubborn at times. It was painful to
remove some of them, especially from the side of the cheeks and chin area. So
we researched other ways to eliminate the problem and came up with the natural
homemade scrubs.
Every Morning: Step 1: The boys will wash their faces with warm, clean, well
water. They will use a clean facecloth that has been sanitized to wash with (You
actually don’t need a facecloth at all but my sons like them.)
Never use a dirty cloth on the skin because your face already has enough
problems with bacteria. When I do laundry I will normally put a very small
amount of bleach into the water to make sure we are keeping the boys facecloths
clean and free of any bacteria on their skin.
Step 2: After they have washed their faces with water they will then use the apple
cider spray astringent. If they have problem spots the boys will use a cotton tip
and dab undiluted Apple Cider directly onto their pimple.
Step 3: They will then rub a very small amount of honey into their faces and rinse
off. That is essentially their morning routine.
Night Routine: After the boys have cleaned their skin, they will then apply a small
amount of Apple Cider Vinegar all over their faces. You can choose to use the
undiluted treatment or the spray astringent.

Undiluted Apple Cider Treatment
One of the best ways to apply the apple cider is to use a clean cotton tip and
apply a tiny amount onto the affected areas. You may need 3 or 4 cotton tips
especially if you have a few pimples. The undiluted apple cider may sting a little
bit at first. If this continues to happen then try the astringent solution instead.
Never scrub your face – just lightly apply.
**Do not put cotton tips that you have already used on your skin, back into the
apple cider bottle. I suggest you have a small container on standby and place one
capful of Apple Cider Vinegar into the container. Clean out the container when
you are done to keep it free of bacteria for the next use.
My sons used to have some pretty bad pimples at times. We found the Apple
Cider cleared most of the acne conditions up quickly. It was nothing short of a
miracle regarding the changes we saw on their skin.
If the boys do not follow this daily regime, soon there is another pimple showing
up on their face. You have to be vigilant about using the natural methods but they
will work over time.
