GALA AWARD WINNERSEach year, the Surrey Gala Committee honors individuals who are examples of positive aging. Two individuals received Surrey awards this year, which were presented at the Gala in May. Congratulations and thank you!

MAUREEN “MO” McTAMNEYMo received the Sondra Speer Scott Inspiration Award, given to individuals whose actions support the mission of Surrey, enrich the community through personal effort and inspire others to act. Mo began as a volunteer in 2002, after learning about Surrey from her neighbor, Sondra Speer Scott! Mo has volunteered in many roles at Surrey including serving as Gala chair five times.

WILLIAM J. GALLAGHERBill received The Jeanne Molitor La Rouche Leadership Award. This award, named for Surrey’s founder, celebrates those who continue to pursue their passions and goals while modeling the attitudes and qualities of positive aging. Bill has been practicing law and serving the community for more than 50 years. He has served on several community organizations that provide legal assistance to older adults and their families.

“Being a member of Surrey has improved my outlook on life,” say 97% of the respondents in the 2019 Surrey Membership Survey. This survey was adapted from a nationally recognized questionnaire designed to help senior centers measure service delivery effectiveness. Survey questions focus on key areas of Surrey’s mission including; greater interaction with others, improved access to resources, ability to maintain independence and overall satisfaction.

Surrey has tracked these measures for the past six years and uses the data for center improvements, program development, and grant applications. Surveys were

mailed out in early spring to members chosen at random and responses tabulated by volunteers. Results were very positive and overall satisfaction rate climbed to 95%, up two percent from 2018.

“It (being a member of Surrey) has been a big influence in keeping me more physically active, eating healthier and learning new things,” said one respondent.

Thank you to all those who participated in this year’s survey. If you have a question about the survey, please talk with your center director or call Caryn Fallon at 484-321-6106.

SUMMER MEMORIESWhen I was growing up, July was a special month. There was no school — hurray! For 10 consecutive years, my family and our close friends packed up and headed off to Wildwood Crest for the first two weeks of July. This was a real treat because my Mom did not work and my father did not make much money as a salesman for Sears. My parents saved all year for those two weeks.

My Mom and her best friend Eleanor would spend the first day thoroughly cleaning the house that we rented. My memories consist of hauling tons of stuff to the beach (no fancy carts back then), digging for sand crabs on the beach, being lathered with baby oil mixed with iodine (so we would not burn), hitting the boardwalk, riding the waves, and staying up late. I remember being able to go out with my buddy, Michael, and walk the streets alone at night at age 13 and 10, respectively. I am sure that would not happen today!

Many years later, when my Dad was in his late eighties, I took him down to the beach for the day, so he could put his feet in the water. Seeing the smile on his face vividly brought back those memories from 50 years ago.

When you read this, I will be returning from my first, two-week vacation in 50 years. I will visit my homeland, Italy. I will remember my family and wish we could have had more of those vacations. This month, why not reach out to someone from your past with whom you share a wonderful, summer memory?

What Is CBD and Why Is It in My Lotion? An explosion of products that market themselves as containing CBD has flooded pharmacies and grocery stores. What is this mystery ingredient and why is it being used as a treatment for everything from pain to poor sleep?

CBD or cannabidiol oil is a marijuana extract. It is extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana plants. It does not cause intoxication. Marijuana’s “high” is caused by a different chemical in the plant called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD oil is legal only in states where medicinal marijuana is legal.

One CBD medication has been approved by the FDA to treat two rare forms of childhood epilepsy. Other potential uses are in various stages of review. Two are promising. One for treating anxiety symptoms and the other as an anti-inflammatory medication.

The bottom line? Always check with your physician any time you begin taking a supplement, vitamin or any over-the-counter product to make sure that it will not cause health problems or interact with existing prescribed medications.

RN Care ManagementIrene was discharged from a rehab hospital and needed help with follow up appointments, medication management and having her vital signs monitored. Rob’s doctor wanted him to have his blood pressure and vital signs checked every week. Sam’s daughter in California wanted someone who could take her father to doctor visits and then update her about his care.

These are just a few examples of clients who benefited from Surrey’s RN Care Management, fee-based service. If you need extra assistance following a hospitalization, surgery or to help manage a chronic illness, call Surrey Home Care Services at 610-647-9840. Schedule a no-cost assessment to see how Surrey can help you.

Personal Finance Corner GOOD CREDIT MATTERS AT EVERY AGEGood credit is important no matter what stage of life you’re in. Credit scores can impact many areas of life after retirement including the ability to refinance a mortgage, obtain an auto loan, lower insurance premiums and apply to enter an assisted living facility. Following are a few golden rules for maintaining good credit in your golden years.

HAVE AT LEAST ONE CREDIT CARDThe trick is to use that credit card but pay off the full balance each month. That way, you’re charging only what you can afford.

MAKE SURE THE CREDIT CARD IS IN YOUR NAMESpouses who never signed for loans and never had credit cards in their names may not have a credit history. This becomes an issue following death of the spouse or divorce. That’s because married couples don’t build credit together. Everyone should have a credit card in their own name to build credit themselves.

GUARD YOUR CARDSIf you have someone working in your home regularly make sure you keep your credit cards in a safe place. Someone doesn’t need to have the actual card to make purchases.

REFUSE TO CO-SIGNDo not put your finances at risk by co-signing a loan or other form of borrowing. Perhaps it’s true that your grandson is having a hard time building credit as an unemployed 22-year-old. But co-signing on any loan, even for family or friends, puts you at risk.

BE VIGILANT FOR ID THEFTIdentity theft can happen to anyone at any age, but we older adults are particularly vulnerable. Monitor your credit report for accuracy and your credit score.

It’s common knowledge that staying hydrated is extremely important. As we age, dehydration can cause a variety of health issues including dizziness, high blood pressure, night time leg cramps and more. But staying hydrated doesn’t always require drinking 8 plain glasses of water each day. Another option for hydrating is eating your water. Include water-filled fruits and vegetables in your diet. You’ll benefit from the water content and from the other vitamins and nutrients in the food. See the diagram below for a few suggestions and enjoy the summer bounty.
