Important Notice before updating software

Notice before updating software

- Once a Galaxy Gear device has been changed to Tizen OS, it cannot be reverted to the previous

Android version.

- User can only update to Tizen OS through “KIES” tool

- Installing Tizen OS will reset all user data on the Galaxy Gear device. You should back up all

data like photos, videos, voice recordings before changing the OS. And, changing over to Tizen

OS will reset all Galaxy Gear settings to default.

- Certain apps are not supported after changing over to Tizen OS.(Refer the page 15)

- For compatibility, Gear Manager application must also be updated after changing to Tizen OS

- Health feature of updated Gear will be different with Gear2 device because it doesn’t support

the HRM

Why Tizen on Galaxy Gear?

Q : What is the reason for the OS replacement from Android to Tizen?

A : Samsung is committed to achieving continuity among current Gear devices, including the current Gear 2,

Gear 2 Neo as well as upcoming devices, by providing more benefits to end users.

This OS replacement for Galaxy Gear offers a better user experience with a new interface, enlarged app

ecosystem, and extra features such as a standalone music player and fitness functionality.

Samsung’s long-term investment in Tizen and the Tizen developer community also means ongoing

enhancements and improvements to the devices in the future.

A : No, it is the user’s choice whether or not to install Tizen OS. However, the replacement is recommended in

order to continue to receive Samsung’s constant support on the Galaxy Gear. There are also a number of

additional benefits for users including a greater number of apps and standalone music player functionality.

A : There are several user benefits to the Tizen OS replacement, including more available apps *(140 now

available), the ability to use the device as a standalone music player and to save files in MTP format,

additional fitness features, and a customizable UX (font, home screen icons, wallpaper, etc).

*Note: 1) Carrier specific apps will no longer work on the Galaxy Gear unless they develop a new version based

on Tizen OS.

2) There are several apps that are not compatible with the Tizen OS upgrade currently, including Argus

Mini Fitness Tracker, D-Day Notification, Evernote, KakaoTalk, LINE, Mini Gallery, miniSquare, Path,

Pocket, QuickSpeedometer, QuickSpinthebottle, Qunar, RadiON, RunKeeper, SOS, TripIt – Travel

A : The rollout of the Tizen OS replacement will begin on May 29 in Europe, CIS, South East and West Asia,

the Middle East, Latin America, South Korea and Africa (with the exception of South Africa).

How can I update the Galaxy Gear to Tizen OS?

Q : How do I get this replacement for my Galaxy Gear? Will I receive this automatically?

A : You that have the latest version of Gear Manager installed on your devices can connect with Kies 3.0 to

download the Tizen OS. Please be sure to update the Gear Manager to the latest version after completing

installation.

If you are unable to connect to a device after installing Tizen OS, please use the Search Device menu in Gear

Manager to disable the current connection, then reconnect and try again.

*Note: Installing Tizen OS will reset all customer data on the Galaxy Gear, thus please be sure to back up all data

including photos, videos and voice recordings prior to download. Once you install Tizen OS, your device cannot be

reverted to the Android version.

Q : Why is the replacement only available via Kies and not FOTA services?

A : The Tizen OS replacement is only available via Kies 3.0 due to a mandatory memory partition structure change

that is too large to distribute through FOTA services.

A : Upon installing the Tizen OS, Galaxy Gear users will benefit from the following features changes:

- Music Player : Ability to act as a standalone music player

- Home & Launcher : Icon display type will be available in 2x2 size with pinch to zoom in/out capabilities, you

will also be able to use image files as wallpaper

- Dialer : A logs icon has been added to the dialer

- Logs : Real-time sync functionality added; log delete availability, filter feature addition, message/call swipe

availability

- Contacts : Real-time syncing added, contacts database addition, message availability, emergency contact list

availability

- Notifications : More records can now be stored; ability to receive notifications even when LCD is off; disaster

notification functionality

- Email : 500 records can now be stored, size of messages has increased to 500 bytes plus 10K

- Messages : Full text of messages can now be displayed; ability to insert emoticons

- Schedule : Today plus previous and following seven days of events displayed; event list view added

- Pedometer : Inclusion of graph functionality

-Exercise : Addition of all exercise functionality (with the exception of Heart Rate and coaching);

- Sleep : A tool to check sleep efficiency by measuring movement

Does this replacement allow users to enjoy every app?

Q : Does this replacement allow users to enjoy every app currently available for Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo?

A : The majority of apps previously purchased from the Google Play Store will still work on Galaxy Gear devices

running Tizen via Samsung Apps. However, as a result of decisions made by developers, we are unable to provide

support for the apps listed below. Also, certain features from Heart Rate and IR LED sensors are not supported

due to the hardware limitation.

*Note: 1) Carrier specific apps will no longer work on the Galaxy Gear unless they develop a new version based

on Tizen OS.

2) There are several apps that are not compatible with the Tizen OS upgrade currently, including Argus

A : Due to a difference in the memory partition of the Android version and Tizen version, all personal data including

photos, videos, voice recordings, pedometer records, etc. will be deleted upon installation.

However, if personal data is backed up to a user’s master device prior to download, it can be easily restored.

A : Upon installing Tizen OS, Galaxy Gear users will be able to change the pedometer profile via the settings

menu (no longer need to use pedometer app).
