Galileo Galilei
ByCierra Connor Parker
Date of birth
• Galileo was born on February 15th 1564 in Pisa, Italy
• He is famous for being great scientist and discovering how the earth moved.
Shifts
• In 1589, Galileo was studying medicine when he noticed the air was moving. This caused a chandelier in the room to swing back and forth.
Swinging• He went
home and studied for a bit. He found out the swinging was similar to his heart beat.
Beats• The chandelier took the same amount of time
to swing back and forth no mater how far it had to swing.
Pendulums• Galileo set up two pendulums that are the
same size and swung one with one large sweep and the other with a small sweep. They swung at the same time
University of Padua
• In 1592, he moved to the University of Padua, teaching geometry, mechanics, and astronomy until 1610. During this time, Galileo made amazing discoveres which were both correct (kinematics of motion and astronomy).
The Theory of Tides• Galileo needed physical proof of the earth’s
motion. So he created the theory of tides. The theory of tides sped up on the earth’s surface to prove the earth’s rotation. One of Galileo’s quotes is “I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgot their use.”
Leaning Tower of Pisa• Galileo also proved that heavier objects move
faster than lighter ones. He went up the tower of Pisa with different sizes and threw them all of he side of the building and proved his theory right.
