From the Principal’s Desk
October is here, and things are busy as ever at Galileo. Our
PTA is conducting their annual fundraiser—Give Week—
during the week of October 14-18. I encourage everyone to
support our great PTA as their efforts directly impact the
services and activities our teachers can provide your children.
K-3 students recently completed the IRI test (ISIP) and if you
haven’t received the results yet, teachers should provide them
at the upcoming parent and teacher conferences which will
occur the evening of October 23 and all day on October 24.
Elementary teachers should be scheduling these soon, and
middle level conferences will be from 5:00pm-8:00pm on
Wednesday and 8:00am-12:00pm and 4:00pm-8:00pm on
Thursday.
The weather has turned and we have had our first indoor
recess because of rain. Please be sure your children are
dressed appropriately for whatever weather we may see, as we
will try to provide outside recess as much as possible.
As you can see—there is a lot going on at Galileo. Even
through this busy time, I continue to be impressed that our
teachers put the education of their students, your children,
ahead of all else. If you ever have a concern regarding your
child, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Would your child (5th-8th grade students only) like to spend 5 days at

Outdoor Science School with other students from Galileo STEM
Academy and Mrs. Sonersen. This year we are going from June 8th-

Dear Parents of 8th Grade Students, You may have heard from your student that 8th graders at Galileo are no longer doing PACE. This is correct but it is mostly a change in name and focus; 8th graders will still be completing a research project and paper that will culminate with a presentation to a panel of judges. The focus has changed to align with the district and state goal of College and Career Readiness. The new project has a strong focus on careers in STEM and the engineering and design process. The presentation date for these projects is Wednesday, March 11th. The image below outlines our new GRASP project. As all 8th grade teachers are involved, you can address your questions to any of the 8th grade teachers.
6th-8th graders -- MathCounts started Wednesday, September 25th and will be held every Wednesday from 4:00pm-5:00pm in Mrs. Knight's room. Middle school students are welcome to come any Wednesday to check it out. MathCounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person "bee" style contests.

GOAL INCENTIVES!!!
Our GOAL is to have 100%
participation from every family
@ Galileo STEM Academy!
• Each Elementary Class with 100%
participation will get a pizza party!
• 50% Participation from Middle Level
will earn them a field day!
• Every Donation over $500 will be
entered into a drawing for a VIP
Parking Spot! There are two spots
this year!
• If we reach $35,000 in donations this
will be our only fundraiser this year!
• If we exceed our $35,000 GOAL we
will have an awesome celebration -
FREE FAMILY STEM Night with great
raffle prizes, food and drinks!
WHAT IS GIVE WEEK?
GIVE Week is now in its 4th year!
Instead of volunteer-intensive
fundraisers that ask our kids to get
sponsors or sell products that give back
just a fraction of the profits, we are
asking that each family make a
meaningful donation, whatever that
means to you. 100% of that money goes
directly to support our school!

All students are expected to be in class, on time, every school day. West Ada School District
defines school attendance as missing not more than six (6) days per semester. Excessive
tardies are defined as more than five (5) tardies. Students who do not meet the attendance
standard may be assigned other consequences. School staff enforce daily attendance and
initiate measures to correct attendance problems, which may include, but are not limited to
any of the following:
•Conference with student
•Phone or letter contact with parent or guardian
•Make up requirements
•Counseling contract
•Attendance contract
•Referral to other governmental agencies
Attendance Awards At the end of each school year, West Ada School District schools issue attendance
certificates in recognition of those students who have maintained regular,
exemplary attendance throughout the school year.
Perfect Attendance = No absences + no more than two tardies
Faithful Attendance = No more than one day absent + no more than two tardies

Please be aware of the release of student procedures during regular school hours.
All students must be signed out at the front office. Student sign in and sign out
is done on the computer through our new Raptor system. You will need to bring
your driver’s license in if you have not already had it scanned into our system
this school year. If someone other than the people listed as emergency contacts
in PowerSchool are picking up your child, we will need a written note or phone
call to the office to authorize them. The person picking up your child will need
a driver’s license for identification. Please plan accordingly and give yourself
enough time in your schedule, as it can take a few minutes to locate your child
and get them to the office for release.

West Ada School District has expressly included in our Elementary Student-Parent
Handbook 2019-2020 that any “change in the regular routine of how a child gets home
after school requires a written note from parent/guardian.” When a child needs to leave
school with another child or have different transportation arrangements than are typical
for the child, a WRITTEN parent/guardian note is required. All changes in
transportation need to be received at the office before 3:00pm.
Thank you for your help.

Absences
Make Up Work If a student is to be out of school for an extended absence of 15 days or less, it is
his/her responsibility to make arrangements for assignments with the teacher.
Written assignments will be gathered during the absence and provided to the
student upon his/her return to school. Please be aware that up to 70% of the
classroom activities consist of class participation, projects, discussion and practice
that cannot be duplicated or made up. In all absentee cases, class assignments
must be completed within the number of days equal to the number of days absent.
Please e-mail the teachers to get this make up work.
