TCVA.org Les Caison III: Looking Up Les Caison III is one of North Carolina’s young Renaissance artists. He is a painter who knows how to draw and sketch; a collagist; he creates large-scale public murals; dabbles in T-shirt design; makes movie posters; donates his artwork to support non-profit organizations; teaches art classes; gives art talks; is always asking a million art-related questions; and somehow still finds time to hop-scotch the state promoting the work of other artists. Obviously, he loves to dance. All of the lonely figures in Caison’s new series, Looking Up, are engaged in a private dance; even the couples appear solitary, lost in private reverie, looking to the stars for inspiration, listening to music only they can hear. The music of the spheres directs their ordinary, everyday lives, without these celestial notes they would be more lost than they appear. Les Caison III is an internationally collected, award winning visual artist. He was born and raised in Greensboro, NC amid a multi-ethnic working class neighborhood that opened his eyes to many things not found in books. He graduated from Appalachian State University earning a B.F.A., Studio Art, magna cum laude in 1998. He is a 2003 Asheville Area Artist Grant Recipient and won 1st Prize, Mixed Media at the 2012 “32nd Annual Fine Arts Festival” at the Art Council of Moore County in Southern Pines. He has participated in over 80 exhibitions including 20 solo shows and has exhibited work across North Carolina including the Hickory Museum of Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, the Green Hill Center for NC Art in Greensboro, and the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington. Les III enjoyed a decade in Asheville before relocating to Asheboro, where he works as an artist, as well as serving the local community as the Randolph Arts Guild’s Program Director. As the Program Director, Les III also enjoys sharing the talents of many other North Carolina artists with the public. You may find Les III working with Guilford County art students amid the Green Hill Center’s Artist-In-Schools program, sharing creativity in Winston-Salem with his co-collaborators over at Delurk Gallery, and enjoying an occasional doughnut.
