BEHIND THE SCENES

THE FOUR PILLARS- THE TEAM OF FDCI (L-R ALPI BOYLLA, RAMESH MENON, NEHA KOHLI DHINGRA AND NIKHIL LAL

The breathtaking beauties at the entrance

What makes an event special are the people who are involved in the making of the same. From a carpenter creating sets and stages to the PR company managing the entire event.

Designers who presented their collection were all talented but the real heroes are always behind the scene.

ARMY OF MULTI TASKERS- TEAM WEBER SHANDWICK

Keeping the work aside we do have a gala time at the event as in the end it is the world of glamour and it does show its colours when the evening/night kicks in.

-Rajat AroraTeam WEBER

Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week is the most celebrated fashion event of India. Where it seems to be only a 5-day affair to the world, in reality it is 3 months of stress, tension, anxiety, fun, endless nights for us. As FDCI’s designated Online and Traditional PR agency our work starts a month prior to the event with the announcement of the launch and ends 2 months post the event after filtering the universe for traditional and online visibility.

The event madness kicks in hours before the event time and continues till midnight. People are running around continuously trying to manage over 300 media personnel at the event and to get their accreditations and media entry bands in place. The team is continuously hit with new challenges and tougher tasks during these days, but having a brilliant understanding and backing each other always the team manages to pull through with flying grades.

Working for WIFW S/S15 was a great experience and it has always been, as am a part of the fraternity for many years. It really feels good as lot many new developments and strategies are added to it every season with new and upcoming designers with great sense of fashion strategy and communication.

Many shows had a great showcase of technology with audio visual techniques with great sense of design elements and installations which obviously demands for more amount of work. Sometimes it becomes difficult and major hassles to deliver things as per the scheduled time lines.Teamwork plays a vital role in achieving targets and to make any event a success story, we face many many difficult and sudden unwanted problems in the way to a successful event, but again one's patience and good management skills with knowledge of time management takes them towards their desired goals.

Quirk it up

A little ‘hatke’ is what described Tarun Tahiliani’s S/S2015 collection perfectly.

Tahiliani, who is known for his drapes made all of us drool over this not so his usual style collection with an offsite show which was also quite different. Though he really had a hard time and several panic attacks because of the sudden weather change that literally made everything fall apart. But, did he give up? No, instead he gave us a collection, a show that clearly states how Art and Fashion go hand in hand.

“The idea was to make the collection stand out and that is why an offsite show”, says Tahiliani. The entire collection was inspired by London based artists, Amrit and Rabindra- The Singh Twins and prints were created on fabrics perfectly going with the drapes and cuts. The entire collection reflected elements from their paintings. It was colourful, he had the same musicians from last time, the ones from Rajasthan who just like the last time gave us a completely different piece of folk music and it was quite upbeat .

After waiting for nearly hours what came out as a result was quite a delight. The collection was so quirky, vibrant so colourful. The techniques used by the Singh Twins were quite evident as one could see the details as well the traditional feel of it.

The collection had silhouettes like tunics, shirts, saris, lehengas, skirts, dresses, dhoti and harem pants, gilets and jackets all draped in Tarun Tahiliani style, it was very mesmerizing. The colours used were from peach to lemon to bright yellows ,oranges reds and blues. It was a burst of colours; even the turbans had a mix of colours.

The show had a very Indo-Western feel to it though the footwear used were completely Jodhpuri and pretty much Indian. For both men and women he mixed traditional motifs in the entire collection with his signature silhouettes and borders, which again turned out to be quite unique.

To the modern sensibilities, the twin tales and the John Lennon’s and to more Art and Fashion, Tarun Tahiliani dazzled us all.

50 SHADES OF SHADES

It's funny, it's casual, it's comfortable and it's trending on and off runway like crazy for S/S15. Sneakers with skirts, wth trousers, sarees and dresses, it's fascinating to see the times changing. What about heels? oh, they are old school darling, don't be boring and wear sneakers! The trend was seen at various shows including Pero by Aneeth Arora, Mrinalini, Shweta Kapur, etc.

A large variety of shades were seen on the runways especially in shows like Tarun Tahiliani, Sanchita Ajjampur, Dev r Nil, etc. All these shades looked very vintage yet modern.

Another trend that was seen at S/S 15 was use of the pastel palette. Such soothing colors in one's wardrobe is a definite must.Wear them any which way they will surely make one look utterly gorgeous. Trend was seen in Eka, Pankaj and Nidhi, etc.

What more than a funky headgear would be trending. It was spotted in maximum number of the shows. Some of them including, Pero by Aneeth Arora, Nida Mahmood describing the funky haido.

Wendell Rodricks- S/S15 WHITE IS ALWAYS RIGHT !

Trendsetting the sneakers and the floral headgears, Aneeth Arora stole our heart with her opening show at WIFW S/S 2015. Arora, never ever misses a chance to surprise us with her unique and innovative ideas from her clothes to the media kit. She always has something in store that everyone looks forward to everytime she is presenting her collection.

The set up was quite Parisian and country like specially because of the use of faux grass, flowers and plants all over the runway.

The collection had prints, antique embroidery , layering with crochet, there were sweet, very girlish breezy garments with floral printing and embroidery.

Just when we

thought that floral is not going to make it to the next season, Pero gave it back to us.

Indian Yoga, an inspiration for an entire collection? Fancy. Wendell Rodricks presented his S/S15 collection and it definitely deserved a standing ovation.

The show started with a small act of Yoga to give an idea to the audience what to look forward to.

The entire collections spoke for itself, each outfit had its own charm, inspite of being white, only white.

The collection ranged from linen shirts to trousers, shift dresses to kaftans, kurtas to lungis and beach skirts as well.

The fabrics used were very summer friendly; cotton, linen, lycra, crepe and silk, . The breathtaking white palette will make you question ,where was white all this while?

GULBAGH BY ROHIT BAL-S/S2015A GRAND, GRAND FINALE.

8

A show that’s going to be imprinted all over our minds and hearts for a long, long time, Rohit Bal’s Spr ing/Summer 2015 collection, G u l b a g h .

If it’s magic, it’s Rohit Bal. If you think it’s a fairytale you are highly mistaken, it is Rohit Bal.

All set for a silver jubilee next year, Bal came back with a bang and showcased his collection, as the grand finale for this season giving an end to the 5 days of e x t r a v a g a n z a of everything fashion. With Quli Khan’s tomb as its backdrop and the moon right above on us, smiling, with Shubha Mudgal singing live and with the tinch of everything perfect Bal stole our hearts and put it in the wishwell himself. It was truly larger than life.

The show started with Shubha Mudgal singing ‘mei hosh mei hu toh’, which was quite a perfect song for the entire ambience, such beautiful lyrics. It suited so well. There were

huge lamps on

both sides of the runway giving it a very Mughal feel and it definitely did help, it was nothing but a short of brilliance. With the Quli Khan’s tomb as its backdrop and Kashmir’s rich and lush Mughal Gardens in the valley as an inspiration, he left all of us mesmerized and longing for more.

The collection consisted of subtle whites, beige, gold and from red flowy anarkalis to the grand peplum cholis and beautifully e m b r o i d e r e d , sequins worked l e h e n g a s .

The models started coming in and the attention to detail and the exquisite designs surely made it a perfect end. The make-up was somewhere in between, neither it was heavy and nor it was too light.

All the female m o d e l s had their h a i r tied up into an

elongated bun with roses in their hair which again giving his entire theme a thumbs up. The collection was huge and everysingle outfit that was shown on that runway stole the limelight be it

the beige and the gold combination of lehengas, band galas, to the contrasted look for men with turbans on their head and an orange band gala, a blue churidaar and a green dupatta tied from above to their waists.Fabrics like chanderi, mulmul, silk, velvet with hand block printing, gold leaf embossing, quilting and resham embroidery were seen on the outfits.

His love for Kashmir did not end right there, there were outfits that were only designed keeping in mind the Kashmir motifs like Lotus, Gulmohar and orchid that represented the beautiful side of the state. Though when asked about the recent mishap that happened in Kashmir, he seemed disturbed and expressed his concern for his homeland and the people there.

He quite c l e a r l y said when a s k e d about his show, “its

s i m p l i c i t y in it's purest

form. Simplicity that is so intense that it becomes grand”. Oh, was it a grand finale? No, It was a grand grand finale and stealing thelight entered the surprise package

Its how this man expresses himself and his creativity to the people who love his work uncondit ional ly. Let’s say if I were too get married in Spring/Summer 2015, I would be dressed in Rohit Bal from head to toe because honestly, No one else does it like Rohit Bal.

and the delicious looking man, Arjun Rampal who looked completely stunning in a blue -black band gala with his shoulder length hair and it just summed up to be a great evening.

RAJESH PRATAP SINGH

The backdrop consisted of people in indigo blue outfits sitting level to level, not only that there was a beautiful projection that was being played in the backdrop.

The make-up for the entire collection was very much the same. Both men and women had a very similar look with eyes done in black and the rest of the face was kept minimal. The hair was tied into a bun and men’s hair was gelled up till the back and they were shown to be having a heavy bearded look. All of this gave a very neat and clean look to the entire collection.

Silhouettes for women were androgynous especially with the brown army boots they wore.

He revived India’s handloom heritage of indigo dyeing and

the women wore showing their androgynous side.

Singh knows how to do it right, the entire collection had such minute detailing and still it stood out as if it had its own personality, especially the buttons on some of the blazers that he did, each button had a different design, a design of its own depicting its own personality. Then there were polka dot bow ties worn by the female models looking really chic.

Apart from the kurtas, pants and jackets, there were jumpsuits and this one thing that’s getting a very warm welcome back, the dungarees. They vanishedfor a while but guess they are going to be back for good, long shirt dresses, which were again paired up with the boots, sheer fabric was also used in a lot of his garments, extreme patch work was also used extensively. Blue Blood, completely

The collection was a blend of denim and khadi and it clearly stated that it wasn’t for us to guess, it was so raw and yet so classy. Guess, raw denim and khadi are going to be a huge trend this season and wish it stays. Rajesh Pratap Singh, always giving us a taste of our own lives and oh; what a creative man and he has a tendency of making people fall for his collection and voila; Mission successful, yet again.

The king of Ikat does it again; he is all set to put up his work on display at an upcoming exhibit celebrating the legacy of Indian textiles at London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Singh’s iconic creations like the Gamchcha jacket and the east-meets-west style sensibilities incorporated Ajrakh Jacket, sourced from the museum’s permanent textile collections, will form a part of the exhibit. Singh presented his Spring Summer Collection 2015 and named it Blue Blood. It was pure bliss to see the mix and match

NEXT STOP - VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, LONDON

of khadi and denim even though he stuck to basic colours like beige and indigo, he added an extra ounce by including red lines which totally contrasted with all the outfits.

The show started with a very soothing instrumental music which was maintained during the entire show.

khadi by blending the two. There were Nehru jackets, blazers, Bermuda pants, collared kurtas paired up with long sleeved blazers and folded pants and scarfs that

describes his relationship with his work and his workers whom he treats as family, and who were actually the inspiration behind this entire collection. Initially, he showcased few designs that were in a raw form of khadi, but were they really raw? Hard to believe but, well that’s exactly what Singh is known for, to make his designs worth a watch and worth a buy.

IN CONVERSATION WITH..

GALORE: What inspired you to start this project?AANAM: Well, it’s not really much of a project; it’s like my baby I like to call it that. I needed a platform to voice my opinions, of what I felt about the new trends, internationally or in India and generally what I thought celebrities were wearing or what I think people can wear , that’s basically why I started GALORE: Whom do you envision as your target reader?AANAM: I don’t have an age category on it. For me, my target reader is someone who is interested in fashion and likes to keep up with trends and someone who is a real girl, because you get to see so many high end magazines that talk about things that cost around 2 -2.5 lakhs but my target reader is a real girl she is out there and wants to be stylish wants to make the most out of her wardrobe and wants everything to be within a particular budget so that’s why I aim at creating looks that are affordable and looks stylish so, I play around a lot with basics.

GALORE: What is the most gratifying aspect of being a fashion blogger?AANAM: I like that there are so many fashion institutions and students out there who have got in touch with me from time to time and I think it’s amazing specially when am walking on the streets and somebody stops me and says "hey, I love your work" I think appreciation is at the end of the day is what matters alot in this field because it’s creative and people are noticing your creativity, that’s basically the whole point of it.

GALORE: What kind of coverage's do you typically run during fashion weeks?AANAM: I do a ray of topics, I do stuff that revolves around trends, fashion weeks is basically when one gets to see the hottest trends and which international trends are being adapted by the Indian markets. I do a lot of stories on trends and also celebrities because I have realised that a lot of people like to read about celebrity spotting and what they wore, so that’s another thing I write about. Apart from that I shamelessly blog about my favourite designers because I do think that genuine talent needs to be encouraged no matter what platform it is, it could be a tweet or an instagram picture or maybe it could be a whole blog post, so I leave one miscellaneous column open to talk about anything and everything at fashion weeks.

GALORE: You recently visited WIFW SS2015. How was the experience?AANAM: Wills Fashion Week is home ground for me and I love fashion weeks, I think they do a fabulous job of putting together prêt designers and at the same time having couture designers showcasing their collection I think they do a very apt justification to what the fashion market dynamic is like.

GALORE: Which designer did you love the most? Why?AANAM: Well currently I don’t think am over the whole Rohit Bal show. It was a hard core spring summer couture collection. The Kashmiri work was to die for, the floral work all over embodied spring summer like nobody’s done this.

GALORE: What do you think is going to be trending in S/S15? AANAM: Well, if you leave it to me, monochrome will keep trending for a very long time and infact I have about three blog posts this month dedicated to monochrome alone as a trend, as a look. Apart from that what is really big right now is texture. I think gradually people are going to transit from doing prints to textures and another major thing that’s going to be trending is going to be structure, people are finally understanding how to dress up according to their body type and I like that they are not sticking to the consignment of those conventional rules; people are willing to experiment. Ox fits, body cons, open slits half way through I think it is now that people are understanding the dynamics more and they are going to experiment.

GALORE: Which trend do you feel has come back again and might stay?AANAM: Monochrome, dark lips, big hair, nerd geek chic looks, they are amongst my favourites right now and am seeing a lot of them around me whether in shoots or runways so am hoping that they stay for a little longer because am not done with them yet.

GALORE got a chance to interview one of the upcoming fashion bloggers of India, Aanam M R Chashmawala, Founder & Creative Director of
