Principally Speaking: Thoughts on 2016-2017 school year Spring is a busy time at Galway Elementary as we continue to focus on teaching and learning while at the same time begin to make plans for the coming school year. I’d like to highlight some of the changes we are anticipating for next year. You may have heard in the news the increased budget requests to address the growing enrollment in MCPS schools. Unfunded needs have resulted in staff reductions and larger class sizes for the past few years. I hope you have used your voice to support full funding of the school budget. We received our preliminary staffing allocation for the coming school year. The good news is we’ve retained much of this current school year’s alloca- tion. Our enrollment is projected to increase to a total of 814 students. In spite of that increase, we still lost one classroom teacher due to class sizes of 30 in grades four and five. We received our previous allocation of 1.7 in hours for Art, PE, General Music. Our allocation for paraeducators , in- structional data assistant and support staff remains the same.. The number of sections at each grade level we anticipate is as follows: 7 sections of Kindergarten, 7 sections of first grade, 6 sections of second grade, 5 sections of third grade, 5 sections of fourth grade, and 4 sections of fifth grade. Some teachers will be assigned to teach different grade levels and if our enrollment increases from what is projected, some teaching posi- tions may be restored. When staffing decisions are final, I will share them with you. Finally, the 2 relocatable classrooms will remain for second grade students. CAREER DAY
Our 2nd annual Career Day will be on Friday April 13th. The purpose of Career Day is to allow students the opportunity
to learn about different career options and to learn about different skills that are required for different careers. We are
currently searching for a variety of presenters. If you would like to share your exciting career with our students, please

LLS Pennies for Patients Fundraiser
Galway Elementary School students will be taking part in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Pa-
tients program from March 7– 23, 2016.
During this program, students will collect money to support LLS’s mission: to find cures and ensure access to treatments
for blood cancer patients. Students will learn about service, leadership, philanthropy and how they can make a differ-
ence by changing patients’ lives. Galway Elementary School has its own online fundraising page that students, parents

SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION Galway will not have a summer camp this year. The Montgomery County Camp Guide for Recreation and Parks Pro-grams is now available. The guide features dozens of specialty camps, summer fun centers, and multi-interest and therapeutic camps, all with programs and activities that include aquatics, arts and crafts, sports, and dance. Visit the Department of Recreation website to view the guide online. Print copies also are available at community recreation centers, park facilities, government buildings, and libraries. MARKING PERIOD DATES REVISED
Due to the loss of instructional days caused by emergency weather closures, MCPS has revised the schedule for the end
of the third marking period, the distribution date for third marking period report cards and the start of the fourth
marking period. As a result, the third marking period will end on Friday, April 8 and the fourth marking period will begin
on Monday, April 11. Third quarter report cards will be distributed on Friday, April 22.

Kindergarten Registration And Orientation – April 27-29 Kindergarten Orientation at Galway is just around the corner. If you have a child or know of neighbors and friends who have children that are eligible to enter kindergarten next fall at Galway Elementary, please contact the school to request a registration packet and to schedule a Kindergarten Orientation appointment. Eligible students are children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2016. Children who will be five years of age between September 2 and October 15, 2016 are consid-ered Early Entrance Candidates. Parents of Early Entrance candidates must submit Montgomery County Public Schools Form 271-6: Application for Early Entrance – Kindergarten Program
There will be no school for kindergarten students during Kindergarten Orientation.
