WHY IRELAND?

language practice while having fun

08

Ireland offers a completely unique and unforgettable living and learning experience.

The warmth of the Irish welcome is legendary and it extends into the pubs, clubs and

restaurants where you will find chat and 'craic'. Culturally, Ireland offers a rich and

respected history in literature, music and the arts. Think Seamus Heaney, James Joyce,

Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats, U2, Westlife...

For an island with a population of just 5 million, the Irish culture and way of life has

travelled far and wide. You can read Beckett in Paris, watch 'Riverdance' in Beijing, even

drink Guinness anywhere in the world.

This vibrant cultural tradition means that you will always have something fun and exciting

to do during your stay, and will ensure lots of opportunities for language practice and fun.

The Irish accent has been voted the sexiest in the world, above French, English, Spanish

and Italian.

WHY GALWAY?

QUITE SIMPLY, GALWAY HAS IT ALL

like its pe

ople —

The historic 'City of the Tribes' is a hugely popular tourist destination, attracting thousands

of international visitors every year. So popular, in fact, that it was named in the Financial

Times FDI magazine 2014/2015 European city and region of the future, ranked number 1

European micro city.

Galway is a great place to study. Situated on the Atlantic, on the west coast of Ireland, this

vibrant city — like its people — is warm, friendly and welcoming. As a university city, 20,000

of its 100,000 inhabitants are students so it knows how to cater for young people. Galway's

bustling nightlife is second to none and, with all the international festivals, there's always

something exciting happening, be it a live gig at an intimate music venue, traditional music

in one of its many excellent pubs, or a street performance at Spanish Arch.

Galway is also the ideal location for sports enthusiasts, with golf, fishing, horse-riding,

windsurfing, sailing, hiking and falconry all on its doorstep.

Islands, the rugged beauty of the Burren, and the lakeside tranquillity of Kylemore Abbey.

We offer a full year-round programme of activities which allow students to take

advantage of the attractions of Galway city and the surrounding countryside.

DO I NEED A VISA TO COME TO IRELAND?

If you are from the EEA, Norway, Liechtenstein,

Iceland or Switzerland, then you do not need

a visa to come to Ireland. The rest of the

world is divided into two lists for the purposes

of student visas – those who need to obtain a

visa before travelling to Ireland and those who

will validate their visa once in Ireland. If you

are not sure about your visa status, go to

www.inis.gov.ieor email us for more information.

CAN I WORK IN GALWAY?

Students from outside the EEA may work

under certain conditions providing they have

enrolled on a course of minimum 25 weeks in

duration listed on the Internationalisation

Register check www.nqai.ie You are then

allowed work 20 hours in term time, and 40

hours during holidays. Galway is a tourist

destination and students generally work in

the hospitality sector.

WHAT HAPPENS ON MY FIRST DAY.

Morning classes start at 09.00. In summer,

classes start at 08.30. You should arrive at

least 15 minutes before class on the first day.

You will receive your class times and rooms at

orientation. All classes are 45 minutes in length.

A placement test is obligatory. Please complete

our online test at www.gci.ie prior to arrival.

Oral tests and orientation will take place on

the first day. This helps us to assess your

correct level and to introduce you to the GCI

team and the facilities in the school.

It also allows you to meet other new students

and to ask any questions you may have. ID

cards are processed on arrival and there is a

charge of ¤5.00 giving access to GCI facilities,

discounts in Ozone Café, on excursions and in

shops and restaurants.

You will be given your core text book on your

first day and supplementary materials are

given by your class teacher.

WHAT IS THE NATIONALITY MIX?

GCI’s nationality mix policy controls the

maximum number of any one nationality so

that your experience is truly enhanced and

you can meet people from all over the world

on our courses.

DO I NEED HEALTH & TRAVEL INSURANCE?

All students should provide their own health

and travel insurance to cover medical care

and to insure against loss of luggage,

cancellations, course fees etc. If you are

undergoing medical treatment, you should

bring a medical certificate and sufficient

medicines to cover your stay in Ireland.

Students from EU countries should bring their

EHIC Health Insurance Card. This entitles you

to free emergency care. Students from non-

EEA countries are obliged to purchase

emergency medical insurance to cover the full

length of stay in Ireland. This is the minimum

insurance needed to comply with visa

requirements. Galway Business School can

provide you with suitable health insurance.

DO I NEED ACCOMMODATION IN GALWAY?

We can organise your accommodation in a

student residence (flat share) or in host family

accommodation. You can book your

accommodation with us for a short or

extended period of time.

HOW DO I GET TO GALWAY?

We can organise your transfer from the

airport and / or bus station directly to your

accommodation in Galway. We recommend

both Go Bus or City Link bus services as

being very efficient and affordable and they

regularly provide a non-stop service (about

2.5 hours) from Dublin airport to Galway.
