Michael Carmody, President

Focal ón UachtaránTá GMIT ar cheann de na soláthróirí oideachais 3ú leibhéal is mó agus is mó a bhfuil meas uirthi in Éirinn. Agus í bunaithe i gcúig shuíomh, agus réimsí éagsúla speisialtóireachta aici, tá rud éigin le fáil inti ag an uile dhuine. Déan iniúchadh ar an réamheolaire seo chun tuilleadh a fháil amach fúinn.

Cuireann GMIT deiseanna ar fáil do na neacha léinn chun taithí a fháil ar an bhfoghlaim bhríoch trí mheán ranganna beaga, intéirneachtaí, tionscadal taighde teagmhálach, meantóireachta, dlúthchaidrimh le léachtóirí eolasacha, agus deiseanna chun staidéar a dhéanamh thar lear.

Nuair a éiríonn go maith leat i gclár ar bith a ndéanann tú staidéar air ag an 3ú leibhéal, léiríonn an fhianaise go léir go gcuirfidh sé sin leis na deiseanna a bheidh agat slí bheatha shásúil a bheith agat ar feadh do shaoil. Cuideoidh d’eispéaras in GMIT leat chun pas a thógáil don tslí bheatha a bheidh agat sa todhchaí.

Baineann 2,000 neach léinn céim amach ó GMIT gach bliain agus i measc ár gcuid céimithe bíonn daoine ard-oilte i réimsí na nEalaíon, na Lónadóireachta, Gnó, na hEolaíochta agus na hInnealtóireachta.

Tá pleananna móra ag GMIT do na blianta atá rómhainn. Is é atá mar sprioc le Comhghuaillíocht Chonnacht-Uladh ná stádas a bhaint amach mar Ollscoil Teicneolaíochta, rud a rachaidh chun tairbhe do na neacha léinn agus don réigiún fré chéile.

Tugaim cuireadh duit teacht ar cuairt ar an gcampas s’againne le go bhfeicfidh tú duit féin ceard a dhéanann áit uathúil de GMIT. Idir an dá linn, tapaigh an deis chun breathnú ar ár láithreán gréasáin agus bain leas as na leathanaigh mheán sóisialta dár gcuid chun breis eolais a aimsiú ar na failleanna atá á dtairiscint againn.

Green Campus has helped increase recycling by over 10 tonnes per year diverting waste from landfill. We have also helped introduce PC Remote Shutdown in the computer laboratories saving 15% on energy consumption.

However, we are not just about recycling waste and saving energy. We help students and staff realise their Green dreams. Two projects that the Green Campus group has helped realise and which really stand out are the Sanctuary Garden Project and the innovative Swift Nest Box Project.

I studied there for a full semester. It was

my first time in Toulouse and I was

amazed at how beautiful the city was. It’s

the fourth largest city in France and it’s

also known as “Pink City” with all of its

red brick buildings. The weather was

much better than in Ireland!

I started college on Monday 3 September

and finished on 12 December. I was

studying at IUT – Université Paul Sabatier.

This college has 15 faculties and I was

placed in the Business faculty. It was an

amazing experience meeting students

from all over Europe and Asia, getting to

know them and learning about their

cultures. We used to have Erasmus

meetings and it was great to meet up

with everyone. There was plenty of social

activity in the evening. There must have

been almost 100 Erasmus students and

five of them were Irish.

I really enjoyed my Erasmus experience

and I would recommend it to anyone. You

get to learn so much about life and about

yourself. I have memories that I’ll cherish

forever.

Would you like to study abroad?

You may be able to study abroad for part of your

studies in Universities and Institutes in countries

such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria

and Spain.

the Fachhochschule Studiengange Vorarlberg in

Dornbirn, Austria, the Institut Europeen de

Negociation in Toulouse, France, La Universidad

I think that the programme I am studying is fantastic. As the class size is small the lecturers know all the students by name. Everyone is great friends and we are always willing to help each other out.

What do you think of GMIT Mayo Campus?

It’s a lovely place to go to college. The town of Castlebar is a nice place to live. The people in both the campus and the locality make outsiders feel welcome with their friendly and hospitable nature. All of these together create a good environment in which to study.

Any advice for first years?

Keep on top of your work and study from the very first day. Don’t be afraid to approach the lecturers with any concerns. Use all of the campus facilities and get involved in student life.

What is the Psychiatric Nursing Programme About?

Psychiatric nursing involves caring for people of all ages and backgrounds. People with a mental illness are cared for in many different places such as hospitals, hostels, day centres, in the community and their own homes. We want to promote positive attitudes to mental health and to help people deal with any mental/emotional challenges they face in life.

What is great about this programme is that you will learn in so many different environments such as in the classroom, in a simulated community based apartment and on work placement. A particularly important part of your learning experience will be improving how you relate to people so that you will be able to communicate with people with mental health challenges and form healing relationships with them and their families.

You will go on work placement in various home, residential and community settings throughout the Mayo/Roscommon region. Opportunities may also exist for students to avail of placements outside of these areas.

In fourth year you will undertake a thirty-six week paid internship, where you will gain more valuable practical experience. We also give you time each week when you can take time out from work to think and reflect on your work experience.

NOTE: Practice placements are facilitated largely in the Mayo, Roscommon and Galway region and may require periods of travel or residency outside of the Castlebar area.

What Modules Will I Study?

The programme modules you will study may include:

• Biological and Related Sciences

• Social Sciences

• Nursing Practice Studies

• Personal and Professional Development

• Health Promotion & Research Studies

• Clinical Practice Placement

• Computer Applications (Year 1)

Graduates are entitled to entry to the professional register of Psychiatric Nurses maintained by An Bord Altranais and Chnáimhseachais na hÉireann. You will be able to apply to work as registered psychiatric nurses in the Irish healthcare sector. You will also be able to travel abroad and work as a psychiatric nurse anywhere in the world. Check out the information booklet “Nursing, a career for you” available from [email protected]

Why did you choose your programme?

I was lucky to get the opportunity to partake in two volunteer trips to Tanzania where I worked with street kids coaching soccer, teaching English in a primary school and teaching some music. When I returned from Tanzania I chose the Applied Social Studies programme in GMIT Mayo Campus as I felt it would give me a good platform to build a future career working with migrants and young people in Ireland.

What do you think of the programme you are studying?

The programme gives you a very broad qualification from which you can specialise at a later date if you so wish. The programme includes work placement in 2nd and 3rd year which I feel is invaluable and gives great hands on experience in potential future fields of employment.

Have you any advice to first years?

My advice to first years is to embrace all that the college has to offer both academically and through the fantastic clubs and societies on offer.

Why did you choose the programme you are studying?

I have always had an interest in technology. In 2010 I was attending a FAS course in basic computer skills and found out about the Accelerated Technicians Programme and I felt it was a great opportunity.

How are you enjoying your time at the Mayo Campus?

I love it. The Mayo Campus has a friendly environment which makes it is easy to make friends. The course is very challenging and has a variety of modules consisting of technical, business and interpersonal skills and this makes it very unique and interesting.

The lecturers are great and always willing to help or support us. We have a diverse group of people on the campus from different cultures, backgrounds and age groups. There is always a bit of banter going on around and I have enjoyed my four years here.

Have you any advice for first years or students looking at the Mayo Campus as an option?

Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions, the more the better. As it can be quite challenging in the first year, time management and organising a study group to get assignments done is a good idea and it is a great way to get to know your classmates better.
