AT THE HELMKaren and Kevin Keyes head coach Muffet McGraw embarks on her 31st season at the helm of the Irish (780-228) and 36th overall (868-269) as a head coach. McGraw ranks 10th all-time among NCAA Division I coaches in career wins and sixth among active coaches.
McGraw is also just one of six coaches (men’s or women’s basketball) in NCAA Division I history with 800 wins, sev-en Final Fours and five NCAA title games. The prestigious list includes Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski, the late North Carolina men’s coach Dean Smith and current North Carolina men’s coach Roy Williams.
This past fall, McGraw took her rightful place among the game’s elite when she was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, becoming the 32nd woman ever to do so. CAREER VS LOUISVILLEIn three career games vs Louisville, Ogunbowale has totaled 50 points to average 16.7 points per game. Mabrey’s 26 points against Louisville last March lifted the Irish past the Cardinals into the ACC Tournament Championship game. Overall, Mabrey averages 10.0 points over three games. Young contributed 16 points in each of the two games vs Louisville last season. Finally, Westbeld is averaging 7.0 points over four games.
WHO’S HOTOgunbowale has produced three straight games of 20-plus points and is once again vying for the opportunity to tie her career best stretch of four straight, already set once this season. Ogunbowale has proven herself to be an ACC road war-rior, tallying 25 points at both Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, with each marking her second highest scoring output on the year. The junior got off to hot starts in each, scoring 10 points in the first quarter at Wake and then a season best 12 points in the opening period at Georgia Tech. Ogunbowale started the game 7-of-8 from the field vs the Yellow Jackets. MEASURING STICKPerseverance has been the name of the game in South Bend and the Irish have the numbers to back it up. With a strength of schedule ranked first in the country, a RPI ranked second and conference RPI ranked first, the Irish enter Thursday’s matchup 16-1, winners of eight straight and a 4-0 record in ACC play. Notre Dame boasts the second most wins over RPI top-50 opponents with eight and is also tied with Louisville for the second most wins over top-25 ranked opponents with four. A win Thursday over the third ranked Cardi-nals would tie UConn for first in both categories, and also tie the Huskies for two top-five wins this season.
SHOOTING PERCENTAGE HEATING UPIn two the last three games, the Irish have produced their highest and third highest shooting percentages on the season - both of which occurred on the road. At Wake Forest, Notre Dame shot at least 80.0 percent in both the first and third quarters, finishing at 55.7 percent. At Georgia Tech, the Irish shot 70.0 percent (21-30) from the field in the first half, marking the first time they had accomplished the feat in any half of play since shooting 71.4 (30-42) versus Valparaiso on Dec. 4, 2016. Notre Dame ultimately finished with a season best 62.3 percent. All-in-all, Notre Dame is shooting an impressive 51.0 percent during ACC play, which ranks first in the league. As a result, Notre Dame’s season shooting percentage has jumped to 49.0 percent, which ranks seventh in the nation. THREE-POINT SHOOTING HEATING UPThe Irish entered ACC play shooting 30.0 percent from beyond the arc, averaging 4.3 made three’s per game. Yet over four ACC games, the Irish have also begun to heat up from three-point range, converting 42.2 percent of its shots from deep (19-45 FG). As a result, Notre Dame’s three-point shooting percentage has jumped to 32.6 percent. Marina Mabrey has been a giant component to the three-point shooting surge, as the junior has shot 42.9 percent from beyond the arc, which ranks 13th in the ACC. Lastly, her 2.3 made three’s per game in league play ranks 10th. FIGHTING THROUGH ADVERSITY After Lili Thompson’s injury during the Dec. 31 Wake Forest matchup, the Fighting Irish are left with seven scholarship players and three walk-ons. “This has been unprecedented. You feel like there’s something out there that doesn’t want us to be successful. To overcome the hurdles we’ve had to, and the mental toughness we’ve needed to handle this adversity, and to see them everyday knowing they can’t be out there with us. It hasn’t changed our focus and it hasn’t changed our goals. We’re still competing for a national championship - that’s what we want. It’s been hard, but it teaches you so many valuable lessons about life. Things aren’t always going to go your way. You have to be able to handle the bumps in the road.” - Coach McGraw However this isn’t the first time Notre Dame has found itself in this situation. The program had just seven healthy players during portions of the 1997 Big East and NCAA tourneys. Then there’s Notre Dame’s infamous 2001 national title season. In their 68-66 championship win over Purdue, the Irish played just seven individuals, and one of them for just five minutes.
ASSISTING IN THE WINBoth Mabrey and Young have seen an increase as of late in their respective assist production. In fact, Mabrey has dished out at least five assists in six straight games, including a season high of seven vs Miami on Jan. 4. Mabrey has averaged 5.7 assists per game in that span, and has risen her assist per game average from 2.5 to 3.7 over that stretch (ranks 12th in ACC). In addition, the junior currently ranks fourth with her 5.7 assists per game in conference games only. Meanwhile, Young has tied her career high of five assists twice over the past three games. Furthermore, Young’s 4.3 assists per game average in league play ranks 11th. Lastly, thanks to their efforts and the rest of squad, the Irish sit atop the league in assists per game (18.8), in addition to 13th in the nation. DOUBLE-DIGIT POINTS & BEYONDSixteen games up and 16 games of double-digit points for the ACC leading scorer, Arike Ogunbowale. In fact, when dating back to the end of last season, Ogunbow-ale boasts 25 consecutive games of double-digit points. However, the Milwaukee native isn’t stopping there, surging into the 20-point threshold more so than any
other player in the ACC. Ogunbowale possesses 12, 20-plus point games this season, which is four more than the trio tied in second of Louisville’s Asia Durr, Duke’s Lexie Brown and North Carolina’s Paris Kea. Next, Jackie Young, who tallied 11 double-digit point games as a freshman, has officially surpassed that total through 16 games as a sophomore, reaching 12 at Georgia Tech on Jan. 7. Shepard and Mabrey follow suit with 12 and 11, re-spectively. Together, the quartet total 210 double-digit scoring games throughout their careers. IRON-WOMAN Twice over the past month, Marina Mabrey has been the Iron-horse of the Irish lineup, staying on the floor for the entire game. Most recently, the junior played all 40 minutes in the win over Miami on Jan. 4. Before that, Mabrey played all 45 minutes in the overtime win over Marquette on Dec. 20. DOUBLE TROUBLE In three of the past four games, Notre Dame has had two 20-point scorers to help spark the offense. In par-ticular, Ogunbowale and Mabrey posted back-to-back games of 20 or more points, from Wake Forest on NYE to Miami on Jan. 4.
Mabrey and Ogunbowale became the first Irish duo this season to both reach double digits in the opening peri-od, as each secured 10 points in the first at Wake Forest on Dec. 31. By the half, the pair had combined for 29 points. Mabrey and Ogunbowale later accounted for 10 of the team’s first 12 points in the fourth quarter, better finishing with a combined 47 points. Mabrey tallied a season best 22 points, while Ogunbowale notched her second highest showing with 25 points. OGUNBOWALE - THE CLOSEROgunbowale has undoubtedly acted as the closer for the Irish, totaling 102 points in the final period this season, good for an average of 6.4 points. Furthermore, four times this season, the junior has reached double-digit points in the final period/overtime: Ogunbowale is fresh off of tallying 12 points in the fourth, including a 6-for-7 quarter at the free-throw line, in the 83-76 win over Miami on Jan. 4. Ogunbow-ale scored 10 points in the overtime period vs Marquette to push the Irish ahead to a 91-85 victory. Prior, Ogun-bowale scored 9 of her 21 points in the fourth vs DePaul on Dec. 17, helping the Irish to a 91-82 win. Before that, she recorded 13 of her 20 points in the fourth at Penn on Dec. 9 to seal the 66-54 victory inside The Palestra. Lastly, the junior recorded 10 points in the fourth vs No. 3/2 South Carolina on Nov. 26. WESTBELD’S WORLDWestbeld’s season best five straight games with double-digit points (career high was six set during the 2015-16 season) came to end at Georgia Tech on Jan. 7, when the senior came one basket shy of 10 points. During the five-game stretch, Westbeld averaged 11.8 points on 64.7 percent shooting (22-for-34), raising her scoring average from 4.6 points to 7.2 points. Westbeld earned her best overall game of the year vs Syracuse on Dec. 28, tallying season highs in points (16), made field goals (6), made three’s (3), assists (4), steals (4) and minutes (36). The game prior, Westbeld secured her first double-dou-ble of the year and fifth of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the overtime win vs Marquette on Dec. 20. ROAD WARRIORSWith the win at Georgia Tech on Jan. 7, the Irish pro-cured its ninth win away from home this season, which ties Villanova and UConn for the most among all NCAA Division-I schools. From Nov. 14-Dec. 3, the Irish played seven straight games away from the friendly confines of Purcell Pavil-ion, matching the longest streak of non-home games in regular season history. The only other time the Irish played seven straight regular-season games away from

home came in 1996-97. Now Notre Dame has played a total of 10 away from home, travelling 13,070 round-trip miles in the process. FINDING ANOTHER GEAR IN 2ND HALFThe Irish continue to find another gear in the second half of games, shooting over 50.0 percent in the second half in five of the six past games. Notre Dame shot 66.7 percent (16-24 FG) in the second half vs DePaul on Dec. 17, then 56.0 percent (14-25 FG) vs Marquette on Dec. 20, 51.4 percent (18-35 FG) vs Syracuse on Dec. 28, 57.7 percent (15-26 FG) at Wake Forest on Dec. 31 and now 52.2 percent (12-23 FG) at Georgia Tech on Jan. 7. DOUBLE-DOUBLE SURGEWith 24 points and 12 rebounds vs Syracuse on Dec. 28, Shepard became the first Irish player since Natalie Achonwa in the 2013 NCAA Tournament to record three consecutive double-doubles. During Shepard’s three-game double-double stretch, the junior averaged 25.3 points and 11.7 rebounds, ultimately raising her scoring average from 12.9 to 15.8. Shepard is up to six double-doubles on the season, which is tied for third in the ACC. To put it in perspective, Shepard totaled 25 double-doubles over two seasons at Nebraska. Lastly, Shepard has led the Irish in rebounding 10 times as her 8.1 rebounds per game ranks 6th in the ACC. Shepard’s 5.0 defensive rebounds ranks 8th in the
league while her 3.1 offensive rebounds ranks 6th. CHASING LEAGUE HISTORYIn 2017, the Irish tied Duke’s record when they swept both the ACC regular season championship and ACC Tournament title for the fourth consecutive year. If Notre Dame were to sweep for the fifth straight year, it would set a new ACC record. The Irish embark on another ACC campaign play with a now impressive 66-2 record against league schools since joining for the 2013-14 season (lone losses were NC State last season and Miami in 2014-15). Notre Dame became the second school in league history to have only one conference loss in a three-year span (Duke 2001-02 through 03-04). Furthermore, Notre Dame is 34-0 at Purcell Pavilion in ACC play, going 8-0 in 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. In fact, the Irish have never lost at home to an (active at game time) ACC team in Muffet McGraw’s 30 years at the helm. The last time Notre Dame lost at the Joyce Center to a team representing the ACC was a 69-48 setback against No. 20 Maryland on Jan. 10, 1987. When looking at conference play in general, Notre Dame is an impressive 97-3 over the last now seven years (counting this season) and has won six straight regular season conference titles (2 Big East, 4 ACC). COMEBACK KIDSThree times this season, Notre Dame has found itself trailing by double-digits and rallied to win the game. The Irish trailed 44-33 at 8:01 in the third quarter at Oregon State, before fighting back to win 72-67. In the Gulf Coast Showcase championship game vs South Carolina, the Irish went down 30-18 at 8:53 in the second, before going on to outscore the Gamecocks 48-27 in the middle two periods, ultimately winning 92-85. Finally, Notre Dame fought out of a 14-3 hole in the first quarter vs Miami, before prevailing with the 83-76 victory. OVERTIME IN PURCELLIn the 17th overtime game in Purcell Pavilion history, the Fighting Irish emerged with the 91-85 victory over Marquette, improving their record to 11-6 in home overtime games all-time. Down 73-70 with 44 seconds left in regulation, Westbeld drew a foul and converted the first free throw before her second free throw went long, when she then grabbed the offensive board and made the put-back, evening the score at 73-73 and sending the game to overtime. Westbeld then added four more points in the overtime period along with 10 points from Ogunbow-ale, who finished with a team high 22 points.

GAME BY GAME STARTING LINEUPS Three Irish players finished with double-doubles for the first time since Dec. 10, 2014, at DePaul, when Jewell Loyd (41 points/12 rebounds), Madison Cable (20 points/11 rebounds) and Taya Reimer (15 points/11 rebounds) all achieved the feat. This time around it was Westbeld (13 points/10 rebounds), Shepard (13 points/12 rebounds) and Young (10 points/10 rebounds).
Lastly, it also marked the second time this season in which six Irish players reached double figures. NEW PURCELL PAVILION SCORING CHAMPForward Jessica Shepard produced a historic outing vs. DePaul on Dec. 17, securing her fourth double-double on the year with 11 rebounds and a career high 39 points, lifting the Irish to a 91-82 victory over the visiting Blue Demons. The junior’s stellar performance broke the Purcell Pavilion women’s scoring record, originally set by Ruth Riley, who garnered 36 points on two separate occasions back in 1999 and 2000. Overall, Shepard’s 39 points stood as the fourth most in program history, trailing only Jewell Loyd’s 41 points at DePaul on 12/10/14, Ruth Riley’s 41 at Providence on 1/30/99 and Katryna Gaither’s 40 vs Ohio on 11/29/97. Shepard, who entered the DePaul game with a season high 19 points and career high 35, shot out of the gates with 12 points in the first quarter, which marked a new season best for the opening period. Shepard had 26 points at the half on an already career high tying 13 made field goals. The Nebraska native ultimately finished an efficient 17-of-22 from the field as her 17 made field goals tied for second most in program history. Shepard’s 39 points currently stands as the second best individual scoring performance during regulation (40 min) among all ACC players. Lastly, due to her impressive effort, Shepard received her first ACC Player of the Week honor. ARIKE ACHIEVEMENTSThe junior ranks first in the ACC and No. 23 in the nation in scoring with her 20.8 points per game. In addition, Ogunbowale’s 12 games of 20 or more points leads all players in the ACC. Ogunbowale’s 12, 20+ point performances through 16 games already tops her total of seven during her sophomore campaign, and has solely produced more 20-point games than all individuals combined who have faced Notre Dame this season (12 to their 9). The Milwaukee native exploded with a career-high tying 32 points at Michigan on Nov. 29, scoring 20 of those points in the first half. She also set a new career

best 13 made field goals. As a result to her stellar start, Ogunbowale has been recognized by the following: Naismith Trophy Watch List, John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-30 list, WBCA Wade Trophy Watch List, Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Top-20 Watch List, 15th Best Player by espnW and Preseason All-ACC. NON-CONFERENCE, NON-PROBLEMOver the last five years (counting this season), the Irish are an impressive 61-5 in non-conference regular season games. If Notre Dame were to defeat Tennessee, it would cap a 12-1 non-conference season, securing the fifth straight year in which the Irish produced at least 12 non-conference wins. 2017-18: 11-1 2016-17: 12-2 2015-16: 12-1 2014-15: 13-1 2013-14: 13-0 Finally, looking even further back, the Irish have notched a 122-11 record in non-conference regular season games over the past decade. FOREVER YOUNGThere has been no sophomore slump for Jackie Young in the 2017-18 season, only a triumphant emergence thus far. In fact, Young has nearly doubled her scoring average from last year (7.3 ppg) with her 13.5 ppg, which ranks third on the team. Young first broke out on Nov. 19 at Oregon State, setting a then career best of 21 points, in what was just her second career game leading the Irish in scoring. Young then stepped up even more in the Gulf Coast Showcase, setting a new personal best of 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting vs USF on Nov. 25, also tying her career high mark of seven made free-throws. The sophomore then followed that with her first career double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds, vs South Carolina on Nov. 26, earning Gulf Coast Showcase MVP honors. Young then notched her second straight double-dou-ble with 18 points and a career high 14 rebounds at Michigan on Nov. 29, and now boasts three on the year after a 10-point, 10-rebound performance vs Marquette on Dec. 20. Most recently, Young Rattled off eight points in the fourth quarter vs Syracuse on Dec. 28, to finish with a career-high tying 23 points, in which she also set a new career high of 10 made field goals and tied her season best of two made three’s. RUNNING IRISHBasketball can sometimes be described as a game of
‘runs,’ and the Irish have outshone its opponent in that very category. When looking at runs of 10-0 or more, Notre Dame has achieved that feat nine times and have limited its opponents to just two - 11 straight from both UConn and Marquette. Notre Dame’s biggest run of the season came on Dec. 6, when the Irish scored 16 straight points vs Michigan State. BLOCK PARTYMultiple block parties were thrown in December, start-ing at Penn on Dec. 9, when Jessica Shepard recorded a career best six blocks, doubling her original personal best of three set back on Dec. 3, 2015, vs NC State. It was the first six-block performance by an Irish player since Brianna Turner collected seven vs Boston College on Feb. 23, 2017. The six blocks also tied Felicia Aiyeo-tan of Virginia, Kylee Shook of Louisville and Yacine Diop of Pitt for highest in a game this season by an ACC player. Shepard also recorded her first 5+5+5 game with the Irish thanks to her nine points, six blocks and eight rebounds. The next block party occurred on Dec. 17, when the Irish collected a season high 13 blocks vs DePaul, marking the second double-digit block effort by Notre Dame this season. Young led the way with a career high four blocks, while Thompson tied her career high with two. PAINTING A WINNING PICTURENotre Dame has painted a nice picture down low over the first half of the season. The Irish are averaging 47.5 points in the paint - compared to its opponent average of 30.0. The Irish have reached 50 points in the paint six times this season. Notable games also include 58 points inside vs then No. 3 South Carolina, and its season best of 68 vs Mount St. Mary’s. REMEMBER, REMEMBER, THE WINS IN NOVEMBERThe Irish capped off a perfect 7-0 record in the month of November, which has become the norm at Notre Dame. In fact, the Irish have won 39 straight games in the month of November and are 42-1 over the past seven seasons. HOME COURT ADVANTAGEPurcell Pavilion has become one of the toughest venues for opposing teams to play in. Last year, the loyal lime-green fans made sure the Irish ranked sixth nationally in average attendance (8,104).
Notre Dame is 456-92 all-time inside Purcell Pavilion, good for an .831 winning percentage. In addition, the Irish currently boast a 16-game win streak at home.
Most notably, however, has been how dominant the Irish have been in league play at home. Notre Dame has won a school-record 44 consecutive home conference games, beginning with a 66-47 win over Providence on Feb. 14, 2012, in BIG EAST play. POLL POSITIONThe preseason AP Poll placed the Fighting Irish in the all too familiar spot among the nation’s top-10, starting the year at the No. 6 spot, before moving to its current position at No. 2. The Irish have been in the AP Poll for 203 consecutive weeks (fourth best in the nation), including 133 straight polls inside the top-10. The last time the Irish were out - a No. 11 ranking on Jan. 17, 2011. Taking it a step further, the Irish have spent 153 total weeks in the AP’s top-five, the seventh most all-time.
Speaking of, Notre Dame has now been ranked in the top-10 for the 232th time, marking the 10th-most AP top-10 appearances all-time.
The current AP Poll also solidified the fact that Notre Dame’s 2017-18 schedule will undoubtedly rank among the top in the country. Currently, the Irish will challenge a total of eight schools ranked inside the top-25, includ-ing four ranked inside the top-10. GULF COAST SHOWCASE CHAMPSThree games, three days, three wins for the Irish, as Notre Dame claimed the 2017 Gulf Coast Showcase championship in Estero, Florida, over Thanksgiving weekend. The Irish first surged past ETSU in the first round before knocking off No. 17/16 USF, 76-66. Then, the Irish notched a dramatic come-from-behind victory over No. 3/2 South Carolina, trailing by 12-points in the second quarter before recording a 25-point swing, ultimately securing the title with a 92-85 win. Notre Dame joins the likes of previous Gulf Coast Show-case champions Baylor (2016), Stanford (2015), UConn (2014) and Middle Tennessee (2013). Lastly, Arike Ogunbowale was named to the All-Tour-nament Team while Jackie Young was named MVP after averaging 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. FOUR IRISH LAND ON NAISMITH WATCH LISTOn Nov. 29, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced 50 wom-en’s basketball players to its Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List with Arike Ogunbowale, Jackie Young, Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey all selected. The Irish’s four candidates marked the second most of any school, while the ACC made the top mark of all conferences with 10. The Naismith Trophy annually recognizes the top men’s and women’s collegiate basketball players of the year. A list of the midseason top-30 team will be released on Feb. 12, 2018, and players who do not make the Watch List are still eligible to be selected for the midseason

YOUNG REELS IN THE HARDWAREA day after earning Gulf Coast Showcase MVP honors and spearheading the charge to Notre Dame’s upset over South Carolina, sophomore guard Jackie Young continued to reel in the accolades. This time, the ACC office came calling and presented Young with her first career Player of the Week honor. Young averaged 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds over the three games in Florida, shooting 50.0 percent from the field. Young set a career high 23 points vs USF on Nov. 25, finishing the game strong with nine points in the fourth quarter. The Indiana native then followed that up with her first career double-double in upset win over South Carolina, recording 22 points and 10 rebounds. It also marked the first back-to-back 20-point games of Young’s career. STREAK STOPPERKnocking off No. 3/2 South Carolina, 92-85, did more than just secure the Irish the Gulf Coast Showcase trophy. First, Notre Dame put a stop to the defending national champion’s 17-game win streak. Second, Notre Dame’s 92 points marked the most against the Gamecocks since Dec. 20, 2009, when North Carolina won 93-85 in Myrtle Beach. Third, it marked Notre Dame’s first top-5 ranked win since previously knocking off South Carolina in the 2015 Final Four in Tampa. ACC / BIG TEN CHALLENGEWith an 83-63 win over Michigan on Nov. 29, the Irish moved to 5-0 in the ACC/B1G Challenge. Previously, Notre Dame defeated No. 10 Penn State, 77-67, in 2013 in Happy Valley - downed No. 15 Maryland, 92-72, in 2014 in Fort Wayne - beat No. 10 Ohio State, 75-72, in 2015 in Purcell Pavilion - then last year, topped Iowa, 73-58, in Iowa City. Overall, the ACC owns eight challenge titles (8-0-3) and boasts an 81-55 record in challenge games since its inception in 2007. In addition, the ACC has won at least six games in every challenge. A ROAD LESS TRODDENThe Irish have not only garnered tough road victories but also doing so in tough venues. In front of 7,570 Oregon State fans, the Irish emerged with the 72-67 victory. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, Oregon State is 62-7 at home, and of those seven losses, two were now caused by Notre Dame. On Nov. 14, Notre Dame defeated Western Kentucky, 78-65, in front of 5,061 fans - the largest inside Diddle Arena for a non-Education Day game in 12 years. More impressive is that Bowling Green, Ky., ranks in the top-10 for toughest places to play in the nation, as WKU is
one-of-11 programs with a winning percentage over 80 percent in its home city. Before the ACC/B1G matchup in Ann Arbor, Michigan had won 30 of its past 31 games inside the Crisler Cen-ter. The Irish then went on to earn an 83-63 victory. BOUNCE BACKOver the course of Marina Mabrey’s career, the junior has scored 5 points or less in 15 games. Yet, what’s impressive is that in those 15 instances, Mabrey has always bounced back in a major way, averaging 15.3 ppg in the very next game.
ACCOLADES FOR ARIKEOn Nov. 29, the WBCA announced its Wade Trophy Watch List with junior Arike Ogunbowale making the 25-candidate list. The Wade Trophy — now in its 41st year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basket-ball. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2017-18 season. The WBCA will then announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. On Nov. 14, the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy’s announced Arike Ogunbowale as part of its Women’s Preseason Top-30 list, naming the early front-runners for the prestigious award. Ogunbowale was 1-of-6 ACC players selected to the Top-30 list, tying the Pac-12 for most honorees of any conference.
The Milwaukee native was previously named to the Inaugural Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Top-20 Watch List. The newly minted award will honor the top shooting guard in all of women’s NCAA Division I basketball.
In addition, espnW listed its top-25 most talented players in the game today with Ogunbowale landing in the No. 15 spot. Analyst Charlie Creme noted:
“Never lacking in confidence with the ball in her hands, Ogunbowale has become one of the most creative and exciting players in the game. She is equal parts deep shooter, innovative slasher and skilled post-up player, making her a difficult matchup for any defender. Ogun-bowale was Notre Dame’s most accurate 3-point shooter and also got to the free throw line more than anyone on the team last season except forward Brianna Turner.”
1,000-POINT CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERNotre Dame’s 1,000-career point club welcomed its 37th member on Nov. 11, as junior Arike Ogunbowale joined the list of Irish elite after scoring a team high 21 points vs The Mount. Ogunbowale needed just 73 games to reach the milestone, ending the day with 1,007 career points.
Then fellow junior guard Marina Mabrey became member No. 38 at UConn on Dec, when she surged for a season high 21 points to finish the day at 1,006 career points. One does not have to look back far when researching the last time two players crossed the 1,000-point plateau together, as Brianna Turner and Lindsay Allen accomplished the feat just last season. Before that, Kayla McBride and Natalie Achonwa each hit the mark in 2013. In fact, seven other Irish teams saw two players hit the milestone while the record of three was set back in 1985 by Trena Keys, Mary Beth Schueth and Carrie Bates. Lastly, a third Irish player could reach the milestone this year as well as Westbeld currently sits at 872 career points. WHO’S THAT GIRL...IT’S JESS!On Nov. 1, just hours before tip-off of Notre Dame’s exhibition, junior transfer Jessica Shepard received word that her waiver had been approved by the NCAA and she was eligible effective immediately.
Shepard was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2016 and claimed a spot on the all-Big Ten team during each of her two seasons with Nebraska. As a sophomore in 2016-17, she averaged 18.6 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game, totaling 15 double-doubles. Shepard earned a spot on the Naismith Award’s Mid-season Top 30 list, a list that also included Notre Dame teammates Arike Ogunbowale and Brianna Turner.
As a freshman, Shepard set a Big Ten record by being named the freshman rookie of the week 10 times en route to her Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolade. Shepard earned two Big Ten Player of the Week awards that season and was the espnW National Player of the Week on Jan. 25, 2016, after recording the first 30-point, 20-rebound game in school history -- scoring 35 points and grabbing 20 boards in a win over Mich-igan.
IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX ITOn Oct. 19, the ACC Blue Ribbon Panel and head coaches’ poll were in agreement - Notre Dame returns as the preseason favorite for the 2017-18 season.
For the fourth consecutive year, Notre Dame was recog-nized as the team to beat in the ACC. The Irish claimed 35 first-place votes and 858 points to claim the top spot. Meanwhile, Louisville (5 first-place votes, 809 points), Duke (10, 799) and Florida State (10, 752) followed in said order.
Since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season, the Irish have posted an impressive 62-2 record in regular

season league play.
Last season, the Irish secured their fourth consecutive conference regular season and tournament title sweeps, and if the Irish were to claim their fifth straight in 2018, a new record would be set.
In addition, Ogunbowale and Mabrey received Presea-son All-ACC nods for the first time in their respective careers while senior transfer Lili Thompson was named to the Newcomer Watch List.
MCGRAW SIGNS FOUR IN CLASS OF 2018During the early signing period, Coach McGraw signed guards Katlyn Gilbert, Abby Prohaska and Jordan Nixon, along with post Danielle Cosgrove. ESPNW ranked the signing class No. 6 in the nation.
Gilbert - 5’10” guard from Indianapolis, ranked 25th overall and sixth in position. An AP All-State First Team selection and National Gatorade Player of the Year can-didate, Gilbert is coming off her best season, averaging 16.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a junior, while shooting 52.0 percent from the floor.
Prohaska - 5’10” guard from Liberty Township, Ohio, ranked 78th overall and 20th by position. An AP Division I All-State honoree, Prohaska averaged 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds last year, in addition to earning a bronze medal at the FIBA U17 World Championship with the USA U17 squad in 2016.
Nixon - 5’8” guard from New York, New York, ranked 56th overall and 12th by position. Nixon averaged 20.1 points, 8.0 assists and 10 rebounds as a junior, earning Naismith Trophy High School Girls All-America Honor-able Mention along with NYSSWA Second Team Class AA All-State in 2017. Over this past summer, Nixon led her iEXCEL AAU team to three national titles.
Cosgrove - 6’4” forward from Holbrook, New York, ranked 64th overall and 12th by position. Averaged a double-double as a junior with 17.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Cosgrove is just the ninth player in Sachem history to reach 1,000 career points, and ultimately ranks fifth in district history with her 1,211 career total.
TORN APARTThe Notre Dame bench is a little more crowded for the 2017-18 season after torn ACL injuries have now claimed four members in the 2017 calendar year.
Starting last March, the Irish lost three-time All-Ameri-can Brianna Turner to a torn ACL in the NCAA Champi-onships. Later, in September, in a decision to come back stronger and be able to compete in a full season, Turner chose to redshirt the 2017-18 season.
Next, senior guard Mychal Johnson tore her ACL in practice on Oct. 23, just weeks before the start of the 2017-18 season. Freshman forward Mikayla Vaughn tore her ACL in practice on Nov. 28. Vaughn had played in six games, averaging the second most minutes off the bench at 13.2. The freshman also averaged 8.0 points and 4.3 rebounds. Lastly, graduate point guard Lili Thompson suffered a torn ACL in her right knee during the Wake Forest game on Dec. 31. Thompson averaged 5.9 points and 4.6 assists.
EYES ON THE IRISHFans will have at least six opportunities to catch Notre Dame on ESPN/ESPN2, squaring off with the likes of UConn, Louisville, Tennessee, Florida State, Duke and NC State in the national spotlight.
Up next, the Irish return to the flagship station on Jan. 11 at Louisville, then again versus Tennessee at home on Jan. 18. Meanwhile, three more games appear on ESPN2 this season, including at Florida State on Jan. 28, at Duke on Feb. 4 and Senior Day vs NC State on Feb. 25.

A GLANCE BACKWhen the curtain closed on the 2016-17 season, the Irish finished 33-4 overall, marking the seventh con-secutive 30-win campaign. Nationally, only UConn has a longer active streak of 30-win seasons at 12. Baylor matches the Irish with a streak that began in 2010-11. Notre Dame also continued its dominance within the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), compiling a 15-1 mark before sweeping the league’s regular season and tournament titles for the fourth straight year.
Notre Dame rode a 17-game winning streak into the NCAA’s Elite Eight, which stood as the second-longest active winning streak nationally at game-time, behind only UConn.
After making its 22nd straight appearance in the NCAA Championships (fourth-longest streak in the nation), the Irish fell 76-75 to Stanford in the Elite Eight, missing what would have been its eighth Final Four appearance all-time.
CONSISTENT WINNERSNotre Dame has been one of the best teams in the na-tion on an annual basis. In fact, over the past six years, only UConn (220) has won more games than Notre Dame’s 209. Baylor has claimed 208, while Stanford (186) and Maryland (183) round out the top-five.
