SEC TOURNAMENT RECAP: LSU 76, OLE MISS 73 (NASHVILLE, SEC TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS) For the second straight time out for LSU, the six-minute game that has been a stable of Coach Will Wade’s coaching philosophy in his four years proved again pivotal as LSU rallied from behind to advance in the SEC Tournament with the three-point win over Ole Miss Friday night. After leading by two at the half and expanding the lead to 11 in the first 2:30 of the second half, the Tigers found themselves in some trouble as Ole Miss came back with a 10-0 run of their own that gave the Rebels a five-point, 51-46, advantage with 11:17 to play. LSU was still down five, 53-48, as the game ticked under 10 minutes. But LSU used an 8-3 run to tie the game at 56-56 and took the lead for good on a Cameron Thomas three-pointer with 6:51 to play, 61-58. Javonte Smart and Trendon Watford got field goals to push the lead back to seven, 65-58 with 4:29 to play. The Rebels get the game to one at 69-68 with 1:17 to play, but Darius Days hit a three and Watford a layup off an offensive rebound to seal the game in the final 30 seconds. With Thomas and Smart a little under their averages, it was up to Watford and Days to carry the team. Watford hit 11-of-14 shots to finish with 24 points (two under his career high) and seven boards. Days had his 15th career

double double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. It was his fourth career 20-point game. Watford and Days combined to shoot 19-of-29 from the field with three treys from Days. LSU shot 44.6 percent with 7 treys, while Ole Miss hit 40.6 percent with six treys. Ole Miss outrebounded LSU, 42-37.

LSU 78, ARKANSAS 71 (NASHVILLE, 3/13/21; SEC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL) In a game of runs and at times wide-open play, the Tigers were able to put Arkansas away to advance to the SEC Tournament Championship in their first semifinal appearance since 2016. Arkansas built an eight-point lead early in the first seven minutes before LSU came back to tie the game at 31-31 with 8:22 to go in the first half, going to the dressing room with a 40-37 advantage. In the second half, LSU got the first major advantage of the contest with 7:25 to go when LSU opened up a 64-52 advantage. The game was tied at 52 four minutes earlier and LSU went on a 12-0 run as Cam Thomas got a driving layup for the lead, Trendon Watford hit a three and then a two. Darius Days contributed an old-fashioned three-point play and Eric Gaines contributed with his bucket. LSU continued to lead by 10, 72-62, with 2:28 to play but Arkansas buckets and a couple of LSU mistakes cut the Tiger lead to 72-71 with 37 seconds left. Javonte Smart drove and scored to make it 74-71 with 22 seconds left. Arkansas would turn the ball over and miss two more shots in the waning seconds while LSU went 4-of-4 at the line for the final margin. Cameron Thomas hit for 21 points which included four three-pointers, while Javonte Smart added 19 points, Darius Days 13 and Eric Gaines equaled his career high with 10 points. The win was LSU’s 1,600 college basketball victory.

YES, LSU IS IN THE FINALS For the first time since the snowstorm ravaged SEC Tournament in 1993 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, the Tigers are in the championship game of the SEC Tournament. Friday night the Tigers won for the first time since 2016 to get to the semifinals and the win on Saturday put the Tigers in the championship game for the sixth time in the overall history of the event and the third time (1980, 1993, 2021) since the renewal of the event LSU’s only SEC Tournament title came in 1980. LSU is now 5-7 overall in Bridgestone Arena.

LEAGUE LEADING 39 WINS FOR LSU IN SEC PLAY LSU’s win over Missouri to close the regular season gave LSU 39 wins in SEC play in 2019, 2020 and 2021 combined (16 in 2019, 12 in 2020 and 11 in 2021), the most of any team in the SEC over that period of time. LSU won the SEC in 2019, finished in a tie for second in 2020 and was third in 2021. TIGERS A DOUBLE BYE FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR LSU by winning in the next-to-last-game of the season clinched a double bye to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament and then was able to get the third seed clinched with its victory on Saturday at Missouri. LSU is the only team in the league to get the double bye in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 tournaments. LSU was the one seed in 2019, was the three seed in the aborted 2020 season and is the three seed for the 2021 event. The seeds:

SERIES AGAINST ALABAMA Well, the series didn’t go well for LSU at all this year with Alabama dominating in Baton Rouge, 105-75, and winning in Tuscaloosa, 78-60. In the win over LSU in Baton Rouge, Alabama set a Southeastern Conference record with 23 three-point field goals. LSU averaged just 67.5 points in the two games, while Alabama averaged 91.5 points, out rebounding the Tigers, 47.0-37.5. LSU shot 48-of-139 for the two games (34.5%) compared to 71-of-137 for Alabama (51.8%). LSU for the two games made just 9-of-43 treys compared to 29-of-67 for the Tide. Ironically, LSU got 44 free throws in the two games, making 30, while Alabama shot only 12-of-15 at the line. LSU turned the ball over 25 times in the two games while LSU forced 33 turnovers in the two games. Cam Thomas averaged 21.5 points in the two games, with Javonte Smart at 13.0 and Trendon Watford 10.0. Darius Days played just the first game, missing the second game with an injured ankle. Overall, Alabama leads the series, 111-74, with Alabama with three-straight wins. Alabama leads the series, 6-5, on neutral courts. These two teams first played in 1916. The teams are 2-2 in SEC Tournament play:

2014 – Georgia Dome – Second Round – LSU 68, Alabama 561987 – Omni – Finals – Alabama 69, LSU 621984 – Memorial Gym – Quarterfinals – Alabama 72, LSU 70 (OT)1980 – Birmingham Coliseum – Semifinals – LSU 73, Alabama 661943 – Jefferson Armory – Quarterfinals – LSU 46, Alabama 411942 – Jefferson Armory – Quarterfinals – Alabama 45, LSU 31 (OT)1940 – Alumni Gym – Quarterfinals – Alabama 51, LSU 251936 – Alumni Gym – Quarterfinals – Alabama 52, LSU 30

LSU A TRIPLE OF DOUBLE FIGURES Coach Will Wade has always talked about consistent behavior and making the LSU program a team that was consistently finishing in the top four of the SEC and in some years competing for a championship. The wins last week against Vanderbilt and Missouri are more steps in that direction. With the wins the Tigers have won double figure games in the SEC for three straight seasons. For LSU that is a big deal as it marks the first time 30 years that the Tigers have won 10 or more in league play over a three-or-more-year period.

CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLES

2020-21 LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

Page 4: GAME 27 - storage.googleapis.com

The Tigers last scored double figures win in the league from 1988 through 1992. To put the three-year streak in perspective, it marks just the fourth time in school history that LSU has put together a streak of at least three years of posting double figure wins in the league:

1934-36 – 3 years1978-84 – 8 years1988-92 – 5 years2019-21 – 3 years

This will mark the 30th time in conference play that LSU has won double figures in the history of the men’s basketball program which began in the 1909 season. A total of 26 times has LSU reached 11 conference wins in schedules that have over the last 55 years roamed between 16 and 18 conference games.

LSU EXPECTED TO GET ITS SECOND STRAIGHT NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES Since the 2020 NCAA Tournament was canceled before the selections were made, the Tigers are looking to get a spot in the 64-team event in 2021 that will be played in the Indianapolis area. If LSU is successful in going back to the tournament in 2021, it will mark the first time that LSU goes to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back events (2019, 2021) since LSU went to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2006. With LSU’s two wins at the end of the regular season, TeamRanings.com has put LSU’s NCAA big probably at 100 percent.

LSU PLAYER JOINS A CLUB Sophomore Trendon Watford has the chance to join a group of players that has averaged over 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists over the course of a season. Here are the LSU players who have those figures at the end of a season since 1967-68:

LAST 5 GAMES LSU is averaging 79.6 points per game over the last five games, with a 4-1 record in those games with four straight wins. LSU is giving up 75.0 points in those five games. For the five games, LSU is shooting 44.6 percent (148-of-332) while holding opponents to 40.3 percent (127-of-315). LSU has made 40 treys (36.4 percent) to 35 (28.7%) for opponents. LSU out rebounded teams in the five games, 41.0-39.0. Cam Thomas is averaging 23.2 points a game with Trendon Watford 16.4 points, Javonte Smart 13.8 and Darius Days 11.6.

IN THE TWO TOURNAMENT GAMES LSU has averaged 77 points in the two games of the SEC Tournament with LSU’s big four averaging in dou-ble figures with Cameron Thomas getting 19.5 points, Trendon Watford and Darius Days 16.5 points and Javonte Smart 14.5 points. The quartet has scored 134 of LSU’s 154 points in the two tourney games. LSU has shot 43.5 percent in the two games (57-of-131), while opponents are shooting at 41.1 percent (53-of-129). LSU has shot well from the arc with 16 treys (41.0 percent) while holding Ole Miss and Arkansas to 26.7 percent from the arc (12-of-45).

HEY LOOK AT THIS THE TIGERS OUTSCORED SOMEONE WITH THE BENCH For just the fourth time this season and the first in a long time, LSU had the points advantage off the bench against Arkansas, 16-13. That number was helped by the season high equaling 10 points from freshman Eric Gaines.

TIGERS 20-POINT GAME LIST It only took through 15 games for LSU to equal the 22 times that players scored 20 or more in 31 games last year. This year the total is up to 38 in 26 games: 20 by Cam Thomas, 9 by Trendon Watford, 7 by Javonte Smart and 2 by Darius Days.

AVERAGING 20 POINTS A GAME Cameron Thomas is at this moment the 20th player in LSU history to average 20 points or more in a season. That last player to average 20 points for a season for LSU was senior Marcus Thornton, who averaged 21.1 points for 35 games in 2009. The list of 20 players, minimum of 20 games, to have averaged 20 points for an LSU season is a who’s who of Tiger stars and now includes this year’s top scorer:

LSU IN THE POLLS...

2020-21 LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

Page 5: GAME 27 - storage.googleapis.com

This average includes a 0 game on Jan. 9 when he hurt his ankle on his opening three-point attempt against Ole Miss.

FIRST YEAR PLAYER AVERAGES Cam Thomas figures into the best averages for a first-year player on the Tiger basketball team, no matter what year in school they are when they play for the first time:

1972-73 Pete Maravich, sophomore (1st varsity season), 43.81988-89 Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, true freshman, 30.21951-52 Bob Pettit, sophomore (1st varsity season), 25.52020-21 Cameron Thomas, true freshman, 22.82007-08 Marcus Thornton, junior transfer, 19.62015-16 Ben Simmons, true freshman, 19.21972-73 Eddie Palubinskas, junior transfer, 18.61974-75 Kenny Higgs, true freshman, 18.11978-79 Al Green, senior transfer, 17.6

500 POINTS AND COUNTING Cam Thomas is getting into some of the top air of seasonal scoring for LSU in a season that will definitely not have as many games as normal. His 593 points marks the 52nd time in school history that a player has scored 500 points in a season. While he won’t reach the 4-digit numbers that Pete Maravich scored in his three seasons, he is already mov-ing up on the single season scoring list and with seven points will hit the 600 mark in a season and that has only happened 19 times in a single season in school history.

FREE THROWS FOR THOMAS Cam Thomas is a league leading 174-of-198 from the free throw line this year, possibly in reach of the school freshman record of Ben Simmons who made 199 free throws. Simmons had 299 attempts in the 2015-16 season. Thomas’ 174 makes are seventh all-time for a season at LSU with Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf sixth at 191 makes before Thomas would get to Simmons at 199. Earlier this season, the freshman set a school record with 42 consecutive free throws made. Ironically, Thomas’ free throw percentage was over 90 percent for much of the season but in the last five games, he is a still good 31-of-37 (83.8 percent).

WATFORD SCORING AND DISHING Trendon Watford has had double doubles in three-of-the-last-seven games and 12 in his LSU career. He had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the game against Vanderbilt and finished the regular season with 19 points, eight boards and four assists in 36 minutes. Last month he had a 26-10 double double at Kentucky (1/23), equaling his career high in points. He was just under that against Ole Miss in the tournament quarterfinal with 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting. Watford has had nine 20-point games this season:

24 – at St. Louis, 11/28/2020 – vs. Southeastern, 11/30/3022 – vs. Nicholls, 12/26/2021 – at Florida, 1/2/2121 – at Ole Miss, 1/9/2123 – vs. Arkansas, 1/13/2123 – vs. South Carolina, 1/16/2126 – at Kentucky, 1/23/2124 – vs. Ole Miss, 3/12/21

Watford, from Birmingham, averaged 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds as a freshman and for the 2021 season is averaging 16.2 points, 7.4 rebounds to go with a good 3.1 assists average. In the last seven games, Watford’s rebound average has gone from 6.7 to 7.4 a game. Watford is second on the team in scoring, rebounds and assist average. Watford had 24 points in the SEC QF against Ole Miss, making 11-of-14 field goals with seven rebounds.

DARIUS DAYS After a couple of sluggish games, Darius Days came out made a couple of early plays and hit his first three-pointer against Vanderbilt in the final home game and that was a signal that it probably was going to be a good night for the Tigers. Days hit 5-of-8 total field goals and 3-of-5 from the arc in a 13-point, 10 rebound night that also included a career high four assists against the Commodores. Days came through even though saddled with foul trouble at Missouri getting 12 points and nine rebounds. In LSU’s February win streak at Mississippi State, against Tennessee and Auburn, Days made 6-of-10 field goals in each of the three games with 10 three-pointers in those three games. Included in that was a 16-11 double double against Mississippi State (2/10) and 17 points against Auburn. The stat becomes obvious as the season goes on. When Darius Days scores in double figures this season, LSU is 18-1. Against Ole Miss in the tournament he hit his first three-pointer and was off on a 20-point, 12 rebound night for his seventh double of the season and the 15th of his career at LSU. His 15 doubles make him the active leader in the SEC in career double doubles. Days was among the league leaders in rebounds last year, averaging 6.8 boards overall (8th in the SEC) and 6.4 in conference games for No. 11 in the league games rankings. So far this season, the junior from Raleigh, Florida is fourth on the team in scoring at 12.1 points and the team leader at 7.7 boards. He is fourth in rebound average in the league. JAVONTE SMART Since Jan. 26, Smart has scored in double figures, a 12-game string of double figure points. He is shooting 47.4 percent from the field and a league leading 41.4 percent from three-point range (62-of-148). He is shooting

83.3 percent from the line (45-of-54) with 8-of-8 over the last four games. Against Ole Miss, Smart hit 7-of-16 field goals with a trey and four free throws to score 19 points with four assists and two steals. Smart has over 1,100 points (1,156) with 309 assists and 111 steals in his three-year, 90-game career. He is one of 13 players to have 1,000 points, 200 assists and 100 steals in his LSU career. Ironically, Smart’s last field goal attempts, which went into give LSU a 74-71 lead with 26 seconds left was the 1,000th career field goal attempts at LSU.

BIG DANCE SELECTION AND TRIP LOOMS So, at 5 p.m. Sunday, LSU will find out where they are in the bracket and who they will play in the first round. The Tiger team and the 34-person travel party will leave Nashville Monday and bus the four hours to Indianapolis where they will enter the NCAA bubble at a downtown hotel attached to the Indiana Convention Center. They will be there until the season reaches whatever climax that the season reaches.
