  • he worked for Jostens and volunteered as both a high school and college coach in Boston, Mass.

Primarily dealing with game preparation and recruting, Jeff Fish begins his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball team. Prior to joining the Gustavus staff, Fish was an assistant coach for Bethany Lutheran College from 2007-2009.

Captains Log: 2013-14... As is tradition, captains are selected every year to serve as leaders of their team. This year, three players were given the honor of serving as captain. The Gusties named senior Jordan Dick and juniors Martin Feddersen and Isaac Tapp to the position. Tapp and Feddersen are the first juniors to do so in the last five years.

    2013-14 Captains...

Fountain Of Youth... With just one senior and three juniors who see significant playing time, numerous sophomores and freshmen will be asked to contribute throughout the course of the 2013-14 season. The Gusties return nine letterwinners after losing six from a year ago. However, those six letterwinners lost accounted for over 65 percent of Gustavus’s scoring last year, meaning the Gusties will lean on their youth to produce. Isaac Tapp and Jordan Dick are the two leading scorers of those that return from last season. The duo averaged 7.7 and 7.4 points per game, respectively.

Home Grown... The 2013-14 Gustavus men’s basketball roster features 15 players and all but one are natives of Minnesota. The lone player to hail from outside the Land of 10,000 Lakes is sophomore post Scott Mulder, who comes to St. Peter from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mulder is one of just eight players to come through the Gustavus men’s basketball program who reside outside the state of Minnesota in the last 15 years.

Last Time Out... Last weekend, the Gusties opened the season 2-0 after taking down a pair of Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) foes in Simpson College and Buena Vista University on Gus Young Court. Gustavus defeated Simpson 83-68 on Friday night before beating Buena Vista 82-69 on Saturday night.

On Friday, the Gusties shot 62.7 percent, highlighted by a 68.2 percent mark in the second half on the way to the 15-point win. Gustavus saw five players reach double-figures in the scoring category, all of which were career highs. Isaac Tapp and Brian Jacobs led the way with 17 points, while Peter Kruize impressed in his collegiate debut with 16 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Dick followed with 14 points to go along with eight boards, while Brody Ziegler recorded a 12-point outing.

Saturday saw the Gusties pick up right where they left off, as they shot 61.3 percent from the field in the first half before finishing with a 53.2 percent rate for the game. Again, Gustavus placed multiple players in double-figures. This time four Gusties accomplished the feat, led by Jordan Dick with a career-high 20 points. Brian Jacobs followed with 12 points, while Isaac Tapp and Martin Feddersen

About The Vikings... With a record of 0-1 on the year, Bethany Lutheran is coming off an 86-64 loss to St. Olaf in its season-opener last Friday. The Vikings led for a good portion of the first half, building a seven-point lead (27-20) with 7:32 left in the half. However, St. Olaf stormed off on a 26-9 run to end the half and would never look back as the Oles pulled away for the 22-point victory.

The Vikings saw four players in double-figures on the night. Jacob Wensman led the way with 16 points on 7 for 10 shooting from the floor. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Trent Kuechenmeister added 13 points, while Jeremiah Fogarty and Luke Roddy chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Darin Haugh was the high assist man on the night, registering eight assists to go along with eight points and five rebounds.

Impressive Debut... In his collegiate debut on Friday night against Simpson, Peter Kruize nearly notched a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds. His 16 points stemmed from a 6 for 7 mark from the floor and 4 for 7 from the free throw line. Kruize’s performance was the best debut of any Gustavus freshman in the last 10 years, as no other first-year player has recorded even double-figure scoring, much less a near double-double. After recording four points and one rebound in his second game on Saturday, Kruize is now averaging 10 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on the young season.

And They’re Off... With a shooting percentage of 57.5 percent (65-113) from the field and 53.6 percent (20-31) from three-point range, the Gusties are off to a strong start shooting the ball this season. Those shooting percentages have led to back-to-back 80-point performances in two wins this season. The last time a Gustavus team put together consecutive 80-point outings was in the 2005-06 season when the Gusties defeated Luther 88-65 and Buena Vista 80-75. That team went on to rattle off five consecutive wins to begin the season before finishing the year 19-8 (13-7 MIAC). Ironically, the ‘05-06 team took down a pair of IIAC teams to open the campaign, much like this year’s squad.

Feddersen Goes For Double-Double... Junior wing Martin Feddersen put on a show on Saturday night against the Beavers. Feddersen scored 10 points and dished out a career-high 11 assists to record his first career double-double. His 11 assists were the most in a game since Dan Schmidtknecht tallied 11 dimes on Dec. 8th, 2010 against Macalester. The last time a Gustavus player registered a double-double with points and assists was on Nov. 2, 2007, when Phil Sowden scored 14 points and added 11 assists against Bethany Lutheran.

Sharing Is Caring... Gustavus made a habit of sharing the basketball through the first two games this season. With 38 assists (19 apg), the Gusties have amassed the most assists in the first two games of a season since the 2005-06 campaign. That year, Gustavus notched a total of 44 assists in the opening two games. The Gustavus attack is led by Martin Fedderson, who has compiled 18 assists (9 apg) already on the young season.

On This Date... The last time Gustavus played on Nov. 19th was in the 2011-12 season when the Gusties traveled to La Crosse, Wis., in what would be a 74-67 loss to UW-La Crosse. In the last 10 years, the Gusties have played on Nov. 19th just twice, the other an 88-65 win over Luther in the 2005-06 season.

Mark Hanson is entering his 24th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adol-phus men’s basketball program. During that time, Hanson has directed the team to 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season.

Last season, Hanson led the Gusties an overall record of 13-11 and an MIAC mark of 10-9. Gustavus missed the MIAC Playoffs for just the first time in 12 years and only seventh time in Coach Hanson’s tenure.

In the 2010-11 season, Hanson earned his 400th career victory with an 89-78 win over Saint Mary’s on Gus Young Court. He became the 65th coach in NCAA Divi-sion III history, and 31st active coach, to reach the 400-win milestone. Research indicated that Hanson was the 14th fastest coach to reach 400 victories in Division III history, as becomes just the sixth coach from the MIAC to reach the 400-win plateau.

Hanson, who has compiled a 435-196 overall record at Gustavus, including a 329-130 record in the MIAC, has won seven MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year eight times. He has helped guide Gustavus to the MIAC Playoffs 19 times, reaching the finals 14 years and winning the MIAC Playoff Championship on seven occassions. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 27 players who have garnered 47 All-Conference honors, four MIAC Players of the Year, eight players who have received 13 all-region honors, and three All-Ameri-cans. In addition, Hanson has coached one Jostens’ Award Finalist (Trevor Wittwer, 2008), which recognizes the top Division III men’s basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement.

Hanson is a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All-America and GTE Academic All-America selection, a three-time Gustie MVP and a four-time All-MIAC selection.

A long-time outdoor enthusiast, Hanson earned his master’s degree in experiential education at Mankato State University and teaches outdoor education classes in the health and exercise science department. He is also the outdoor program direc-tor at the college.

Hanson, a native of Dodge Center, Minnesota, lives in St. Peter with his two chil-dren, Hans and Annika.
