Morrisville State Defense

Series History•The Saxons are 3-0 versus the Mustangs since the two teams started squaring off in 2015. Over the course of three games, AU has outscored Morrisville State 118-50. The Mustangs have not scored more than 24 points in a game against the Saxons.

The 2017 matchup fell in AU’s favor, 35-7, in Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons shutouttheMustangsduringthefirstthreequartersofthegamebeforeallowing a touchdown with 13:08 to go in the game.

The Saxons rushed for 324 yards, with Maleke Fuentes ‘18 and Nas Smith leading the way with 146 and 105 yards, respectively. Fuentes scored twice and Smith scored once. Linebacker Nick Milgate pulled in two interceptions for a total of 60 return yards. AU had four total interceptions in the game - the most AU had in a single-game in 2017 and the most the Saxons had inagamesinceSeptember15,2012againstSt.Lawrence.AUhadfiveinterceptions last week against SUNY Cortland.

Last Game for the Saxons•AU had a rocky start out the gate last week, falling behind SUNY Cortland 14-0 with only 4:47 off the clock. The Red Dragons were threatening to score again on the AU 7-yard line when sophomore Christopher Meano pulled in a touchdown in the end zone and returned the ball to the Cortland 45-yard line.TheSaxonsmarcheddownthefield,cappingthedrivewitha1-yardtouchdown run by sophomore Nas Smith.

The Saxons tied the game up when they forced a three-and-out and scored on a two-play 70-yard drive. The scoring play was a 63-yard touchdown pass from Ben Burk to Robert Smith Jr. It was the second game in a row that Robert Smith Jr. scored touchdown from more than 60-yards out.

After AU tied the game up at 14-14, Cortland scored to take the lead again, 21-14. However, sophomore Kevin Bragaglia set the Saxons up for a quick score following a 77-yard kickoff return. Two plays later, AU scored when Burk dove intotheendzoneforhisfirstrushingtouchdownoftheyear.

AUjumpedoutaheadwithonlythreesecondleftinthefirsthalfwhenBen Sennett knockedthrougha25-yardfieldgoal,hissecondoftheseason.Cortland knotted the game up again on their opening drive the of the second half.

Bragaglia gave AU momentum again when he rushed for a touchdown from26yardsout.Hethenputthe“nailinthecoffin”whenheregistereda92-yard punt return. Cortland threatened late in the game, but the Saxon defense held the Red Dragons to only one score, sealing the game 38-33.

Last Game Out for the Mustangs•Morrisville State is coming off a 34-26 win over St. Lawrence. The Mustangs accumulated 357 yards of total offense in the game including 221 yards rushing and 136 yards passing.

Nick Edmond led the way for the Mustangs on the ground, racking up 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He was followed by quarterback Brandon Gwinner with 50 yards rushing a touchdown.

Through the air, Gwinner had 136 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-24 (62.5%) passing. Jermaine Cooperhadfivereceptionsfor53yardswhilePetrit Boga had a touchdown on his lone catch of the day.

Jose Garcia led the way on defense, wrangling in 13 tackles (six solo; seven assisted) and four broken up passes. Mike Bodnar, Taylor Avanzato and Jermaine Rankine each had two tackles for a loss in the game. Morrisville brought down St. Lawrence quarterbacks three times in the game on top of 11 tackles for a loss.

Moving Forward•The Saxons are wrapped up a three-game homestand to open the 2018 season, going 2-1. The Saxons will remain in Empire 8 play, taking on Morrisville State, a team they have not lost to in three matchups. Following the game, AU will travel to Buffalo State before returning home to take on reigning Empire 8 Champion, The College at Brockport on October 13th.

Down the stretch, AU will travel to Utica and Hartwick before taking on Empire 8 rival, St. John Fisher College in Yunevich Stadium on November 3rd. Finally, the Saxons will close out the season with a nonconference game against the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.

The Saxon Offense•After two games in 2018, the Saxon offense ranks fourth in points per game (31.7) in the Empire 8. Cortland remains atop the Empire 8 with 47.0 points per game while Brockport and Hartwick have scored 44.7 and 41.7 points per game, respectively.

AU currently ranks second in the Empire 8 in rushing yards per game (188.3), trailing only Brockport (215.7). Nas Smith ranks second in the Empire 8 with 107.7 rushing yards per game and rushing touchdowns (4), trailing only Ronald Ballard from Hartwick with 141.7 yards per game and seven touchdowns.

The AU aerial threat is second to last in the Empire 8 with 188.3 yards per game. Only Morrisville has fewer yards per game (187.0). St. John Fisher currently leads the conference in yards passing per game (335.0) but is last in passing touchdowns (3). Cortland leads the Empire 8 with 12 passing touchdowns this season.

First-year Robert Smith Jr. currently ranks eighth in the conference in receiving yards per game (81.3), sixth in receiving yards (244) and second in receiving touchdowns (4).

The Saxon Defense•The AU defense ranks third in the Empire 8 in points allowed per game (23.3) trailing only Brockport (8.7) and Utica (16.7).

AU currently leads the conference in interceptions (8), with Cole Reed leading the way with two interceptions. Six other Saxons have pulled in a

Bob Rankl was appointed head coach of the Alfred University football team prior to the 2014 season after serving 15 years as an assistant for the Saxons. Rankl has led the Saxons to a 33-12 record in his four seasons as head coach, making him the fastest to reach the 25-win mark as head coach in AU history. Rankl,justthefifthheadcoachat AU since 1937, has a winning

percentage of .733, which ranks tops in school history among coaches who have served as head coach for at least 23 games. The 2016 Saxons went 10-0 in the regular season, claiming theEmpire8Conferencecrownandbecomingthefirstteam in Empire 8 history to go through a season unbeaten. The Saxons were the top seed in their region of the NCAA tournament, and hosted three games. AU defeated Bridgewater (MA) State and Western New England in the firsttworoundsbeforefallingtoMountUnioninanElite8shootout at Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons won a school-record 12 games and were named winners of the Lambert Cup as the top Division III team in theEast.Itmarkedthefirsttimesince1971thatanAlfredUniversity team earned the Lambert Cup.

During that 2016 season, Rankl led a group of Saxon coaches who were honored as Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. Rankl was also named ECAC North Coach of the Year, D3football.com East Region Coach of the Year, and AFCA Division III Region 1 Coach of the Year. During Rankl’s tenure, the Saxons have also enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom. AU has had at least one football player recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-District in each of the past four years (Michael Berardi in 2014 and 2015; A.J. LiCata, Shyheim Wingate and Zach Brinkley in 2016; A.J LiCata 2017). Rankl was appointed head coach of the AU football team in May 2014 after 15 seasons as an assistant coach for the Saxons. He served as the defensive line coach from 1999-2000, before transitioning to coaching the offensive line and coordinating the Saxons’ running game from 2001-2013. Rankl was instrumental in helping the Saxons reach the post-season 10 consecutive years (2004-2013), including six ECAC Bowl Championships, two Empire 8 Championships and appearances in the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, reaching the national quarterfinalsin2010.Duringthattime,AUset19differentschool records on offense.

Reed also leads the team with 44 tackles (20 solo; 24 assisted) in only three games. He currently ranks fourth in the nation in total tackles per game. He is currently on pace to accumulate 147 tackles in 2018, which would rank third all-time in AU history, trailing only John Hoosock (154) and A.J. LiCata (153). Nick Milgate is currently eighth in the nation in total tackles per game (13.0) with 39 tackles (16 solo; 23 assisted). He is on pace to have 130 tackles in2018,whichwouldrankfifthall-timeatAU.ThelasttimeAUhadtwoplayersfinishedwithmorethan130tacklesinaseasonwas2016whenLiCataand Isaiah Moak had 153 and 138 tackles, respectively.

Kevin Bragaglia D3Football.com Team of the Week/E8 Player of the Week•Sophomore Kevin Bragaglia was named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week, earning a spot as a return specialist following his performance last Saturday. He was also named the Empire 8 Return Specialist of the Week. He racked up 169 total return yards including 77 kickoff return yards and 92 punt return yards. He scored one touchdown on a punt return, one on a rushing play and set the Saxons up to score another.
