(Ramsey Regional Center) Radio: WRAS-FM 88.5 (tape delay) Georgia State (1-2) will head back on the road to face Western Carolina (4-2) on Tuesday evening in Cullowhee, N.C. e teams will be meeting for the 12th time ever, dating back to 1983-84. Western Caro- lina came to Atlanta last year on Dec. 11 and surprised the Panthers with a 51-37 upset as host GSU shot just 21 percent from the field (12-of-57 shots). All-CAA forward Chan Harris sat out that game with an injury. Angelique Burtts hit just 2-of-16 shots to go with seven free throws to lead the paltry GSU attack with 11 points. Letecia Davenport started for Harris, but did not score a point. Western Carolina opened the season with three straight wins over N. C. Central, Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville. Since, the Catamounts dropped a pair of games to Campbell and Coastal Carolina, but rebounded to defeat Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Western Carolina has three Atlanta area alum on its current roster. Forward Alex Abraham is from Stone Mountain (Padeia School), guard Diamond Hunnicutt is from Jonesboro (Landmark Christian Academy) and Molly Fagan is from Marietta (Marietta High School). GSU has one player on its roster from North Carolina in center Alana Beroth (Pfaff- town, Reagan HS), but she won’t become eligible for a few more weeks aſter transferring to GSU from East Carolina aſter the first semester last year.

CLASSROOM SUCCESS

The Panthers had an excellent summer in the classrooms, posting acombined 3.35 GPA. Five members of the team had posted GPA’s of 3.2 orbetterduringlastspring’ssemesterthatincludedbasketballseason. COACH SHARON BALDWIN-TENER SharonBaldwin-Tener,namedGSU’sheadcoachinAprilof2010,has known how to win as both acollegiate player and collegiatecoach. In her first season, GSUcontinued to improve as theseason went along, defeating theteam in the CAA Championshipthathadbeatenthemby24pointsinthefirstCAAofhertenure.Theteamhadthefirstthree-gamewinstreak intheirshortCAAhistoryduringastretchinFebruary,whilealso defeating two CAA teamswhohadbeenrankedintheMid-MajorTop25poll,Shepickedupher200thcareerwinasaheadcoachonDec.29vs.MississippiValleyState(91-65)andguidedGSUtothe500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9 in a win overHofstra(84-70)Ineightyears,sheturnedtheEastCarolinawomen’sbasket-ballprogramaround,winning126games,whileearningpost-seasonbidstotheNCAAandWNITtournaments.TheLadyPiratesofECUwontheC-USATournamentin2007. GSU’S MAGIC NUMBER Georgia State plays best at a fast tempo. The magicnumber for a sure win appears to be scoring 70 points asGSUsawastreakof19consecutivewinswhentoppingthat70-pointplateauendonMondaynightatFloridaState.But,the Panthers came right back the next game to score 70 vs.Campbellandclaimthatwintomakeitwinsin20ofthelast21. Last year, the highest scoring game was 91 points in a26-pointrompoverMississippiValleyStateandthetopgameintheCAAplaywas84pointsina14-pointwinoverHofstra,thenatop25teamintheMid-Majorpoll.

CLEANING THE GLASS The Panthers are averaging 43 rebounds per game thisseason,toppedby55reboundsSaturdayvs.AppalachianState.GSUhad28offensivereboundsinthatgamealone. Thehustlingteamhas102offensivereboundsinthefourgamesthisyear(25.5pergame). GeorgiaStateaveraged40.5reboundspergamelastyear,fourthintheCAA.Theyhada+2.5reboundadvantagefortheseasontorankNo.87intheNCAAfinalstats. The top two rebounders are back in Chan Harris andCodyPaulk,withveteranTiffanyAndersonalsoakeyagain.

ROSTER BREAKDOWNS GeorgiaState’s2011-12rosterincludesplayersfromsevendifferentstates,plusoneinternationalstudent. Sixofthe13playershailfromthestateofGeorgia,whiletwocomefromNorthCarolina.GSUhasoneplayereachfromAlabama, California, Indiana, South Carolina and Virginia.OneplayercametoGSUfromAustralia. Of the six from Georgia, four are from metro Atlanta(Long,MaysHS;Means,MaysHS;Nolan,DuluthHS:Taylor,DouglasCountyHS). This year’s roster includes just one senior (Harris). The2011-12rosterhasfivejunors(Anderson,Hargraves,Means,Paulk,Taylor).Therearetwosophomores(Long,V.Smith)andfivefreshmen(Beroth,Johnson,Nolan,M.Smith,Watson).

THREE-PEAT FreshmanKendraLongrankedNo.6intheCAAlastyearwithher57madethree-pointbaskets.Shemadeatleastonetrey in25of thegamesandhadfivemakes inagame threedifferenttimes.She’smadeatreyin29ofher35GSUgames. The 57 makes were fourth most in a season in schoolhistory,soLongcansethersightsontheseason-best69makesbyCarmelitaLayogin1999-2000.

IT TAKES A THIEF GSUhas37stealsin4gamesthisyear(9.3),astatusuallyindicative of the team’s success. Oddly enough, this year’sseasonlowforstealswasthe7inthewinoverCampbell. GeorgiaStategetsstartedwithitspick-pocketsandshotblocks.ThePanthersaveraged10stealsagamelastyear(311ontheseason)torankNo.62intheNCAA.The144blocksdon’t count as “steals”, but serve about the same purposein getting the transition game going. It had 12 steals in theopener. ThePanthersrelyoneveryoneonthecourtgettingsteals,evidentbythefactthesevenplayershad25ormorestealslastyear.
