Educationiseverything.Whetherapersonisstartingoutinpre-schoolorjustretiredfromwork-
inga40-hour-a-weekjobfor40,50or60yearsstraightandlearninghowtoadjusttonothavingtogotoworkeveryday,educationiseverything.
ForNortheast freshman guardBreeHarris ofNewSite and freshmanforwardCedricJanesofDyersburg,Tenn.,educationhascomeinallformsandshapesduringtheirshortlifetimes.
ForHarris,itwaslearningthatonedoesn’tstartfromwheretheywanttobe,butitisasteadyprogressiontothepinnacleofone’sdesires.
ForJanes,theeducationprocesshashelpedthesix-foot,six-inchfresh-mandiscoverthingsabouthimselfthatheneverknewwasthereuntildoorswereopenedforhim.
“WheneverIwasbigenoughtopickupaball,mybrotherandmydadwouldn’tletmeshootathreeuntilIwasaneighthgraderinhighschool,”Harrissaid.“Theywantedmyformtobegood.”
Harris’ education process didn’t stopat just developingher form, itwas aboutlearning to shoot from anywhere on thefloor.
“I had to shoot one-handed andcouldn’t through it up two-handed likethe other kids in school,”Harris said. “Istartedoffatonefootawayandgraduallyworkedmywayback.”
Harris’educationcamealsoviathe10-foot high regulation basketball goal andnot an adjustable one like some athletesstartoutplayingon.
Janes’basketballeducationcameatanearlyageaswellwhenhestartedinatour-namentinnorthernTennessee.
“IstartedplayingwhenIwassix,”Janessaid.“Itwasasmall tourna-mentmydadhelpedgetmeintoinRipley,Tenn.Iplayedformythirdgradeteacher.”
EarlyeducationiswhereHarrisandJanes’storiesdivergealongthehard-wood.
Harris split her time atNewSiteHighSchool between the basketballcourtsandtheacademiclifewhileJanesfocusedonbasketball.
Harris,a5-7guard,wasnamedthe2010CellularSouthScholarAthletefor theClass2Astatechampionshipgameat theMississippiHighSchoolActivitiesAssociation’s (MHSAA)state tournament in thespringof2010inJackson.
Harris,whohasapre-medicinebiologyareaofconcentrationatNorth-east,saidthatacademicskeptherontrack.
“Ialwaysputschoolfirst,”Harrissaid.“Iwasprettymuchprepared.Itookcollegeclassesmysenioryear.”
HarrisfinishedheracademiccareeratNewSitewitha4.0gradepointaverageandwasvaledictorianofherclass.
Onthehardwood,Janesdevelopedintoamanamongstboys.Duringhisfreshmanyear inhighschool,Janeswasalreadysix-feet, three-inches tallandtoppingthescalesat350pounds.
Thosestatsaregreatforafootballplayer,whichJaneswasatthattime,buttheformerdefensivetackle,knewthattobeabletoexcelatthegameheloved,thepoundshadtogo.
“Allthewaythroughhighschool,Iwasalwaysbigandtall,”Janessaid.“Iwashuge.Iwasalwaysthebigman.”
Janes’mindsetandbodychangeddramaticallybetweenhisfreshmanandsophomoreyearsofhighschool.
“MyhighschoolcoachsaidIwastoobig,”Janessaid“Ineededtoloseweight.Itwasawholebunchofrunning,workingoutandgettingupearlyandworkingbymyselfandafterIgotfinishedrunning,Ihadtogotothegymandrunsomemore.”
ForJanes,thetransformationstartedwithdroppingalmost100poundsbetweenhisninthandtenthgradeseasons,butitwasachangeofscenerythatsethismindright.
“Myfirsttwoyearsinhighschoolwasbasicallyjustfinishhighschoolanddosomethingwithyourlife,”Janessaid.“ThenImovedtoDyerCountyandeverythingstarted to lookup. IgotascholarshipandInever thoughtIwouldbeplayingball in school in col-lege.”
While Janes had to modify his bodytofithisgame,Harris’gamecameeasytoher.
“ShootingalwayscamenaturallyandIreallydidn’thavetodomuchelse,”Har-ris.“That’swhythetransitionhasbeensohardbecauseIreallydidn’thavetodribbleor have to defend so I havehad toworkonmyballhandlingand learninghow todefend.”
Whileboththeirbasketballeducationsprogressed, the opportunities to continuetheir academic educations also increasedandforHarris,thedecisionwassimple.
“CoachFordhasaverygoodreputation,”Harrissaid.“Thiswholepro-gramisprestigious.Tobehonest,IwantastatechampionshipsinceIdidn’tgetoneinhighschool.”
“Ineverplannedongoingtoschoolsomygradesweren’tup,”saidJanes.“Aftertalkingwithmyparentsandcoaches,itturnedouttobeaprettygoodideaandit’sbeenaprettygoodideasofar.HopefullyIcangetascholarshiptogotoabiggerschoolandplaymyheartouttheretoo.”
DedicationiswhatdrivesbothHarrisandJanesintheirpursuitsonandoffthebasketballcourts.
And just as a change of scenery helped focus Janes in high school, achangeofscenerytoBoonevillehashelpedthefreshmanforwarddiscoveranewloveforeducation.
“Ineverthoughtofmyselfasasmartguy,”Janessaid.“WhenIgothereandfoundoutallyouhavetodoisstudy,IfoundoutIwasprettygoodatmath.Ineverknewthatandit’sprettyeasy.Thatcamealoteasierthanmygameiscoming.”
WhileJanesistryingtoadjusttolifeoffthebasketballcourt,Harrisistakingheracademicstothehardwoodandapplyingtheconceptstothegame.
“Everyteam,youplayisgood,”Harrissaid.“It’sdifferentpreparation.Youcan’thaveabadgame…theywillcapitalize.Inhighschool,youcouldplaybadandstillwin.”
Andwiththateducation,bothJanesandHarrisarelookingatusingwhattheylearnatNortheasttoprogressintothenextstepoftheirlives–whetheritisonthehardwoodorinthelaboratory.
