The ‘Pink Panthers Day ‘, as it has become known throughout our club, is always one of the most enjoyable events of the season and Panthers as one of the pioneers of the ‘Women in League’ concept can enjoy the satisfaction derived from the vast growth of appreciation and acknowledgement of the part women play in sport and particularly rugby league throughout Australia.

Over the past few years the Panthers Women in League Association has raised many thousands of dollars for breast cancer and other charities and conducted another very successful luncheon in the Chairman’s Club last Thursday.

The heavy injury toll we experienced gave

us a slow start to the season, but as our team slowly strengthens we are looking better with every game. With two wins from our last three games, the Panthers have moved to 12th on the competition ladder well within reach of the top eight and with confidence sky high all our supporters will be looking for a repeat of last week’s great win over the 2012 premiers.

Congratulations are also due to the NYC under 20s side following the strong win against Melbourne; as competition leaders they should go confidently into the game against the Warriors.

With a number of our strategic outcomes slowly being achieved our organisation is

strengthening both on and off the field in rugby league and throughout the licensed club operations. It was pleasing to hear Executive General Manager Phil Gould express significant satisfaction at a recent Panthers Board meeting when he reported that whilst there were still many outcomes to be achieved, rugby league planning was well ahead of where he anticipated it would be, thanks to strong leadership by General Manager Phil Moss and first grade coach Ivan Cleary and their respective teams.

ROUND TEN - may 18, 2013 - PANTHERS

Over the past six months, on behalf of the Panthers, I explored every avenue available to try and attract to our club, great players Jonathan Thurston from the Cowboys and Todd Carney from the Sharks.

I found these lads to be outstanding young men. I will forever remember the respect they showed the Panthers and the honesty and integrity with which they handled these negotiations.

In the end, both boys decided to remain with their clubs. I went into negotiations with eyes wide open, knowing this could be the final result. However, on behalf of the Panthers and our fans, I considered it my responsibility to put a strong case for our club in case there was a chance that either was interested in a change of scenery.

I also wanted to show our fans just how serious we are at Penrith about the club we want to create.

In the next 10 years, Panthers will be the biggest and best NRL club in the country. The day will come when players are knocking the door down to be a part of our club. But for now, we are working hard behind the scenes to create something that will be really special for the people of Western Sydney.

The foundations are in place and I’ve the utmost confidence in Penrith as an emerging regional city and Panthers Group as an organisation realising its true potential.

I’m extremely excited with the players we have already recruited for 2014.

The players we recruited for 2013 have also been outstanding for our club. Sika Manu, Dean Whare, Lewis Brown, James Segeyaro and Wes Naiqama all had other clubs they could’ve selected rather than coming to the Panthers, but they believed in what we are creating and are leading by example on and off the field.

The Panthers have not had much luck with injury so far this season. Already we have used seven players outside our top 25. We have another 10 youngsters we would love to give a few games to in the NRL between now and the end of the season to encourage their development.

I believe our NRL team have played with integrity and dignity in every appearance they have made this year. All in all, I couldn’t be happier with where our football development is at this point in time.

There are definitely better days ahead for the Panthers.

Taking victory over reigning premiers Melbourne was obviously the highlight of our season so far. I was happy for the fans that made the effort to come out and support us, especially on Mother’s Day, because the majority were the ones who turn out every week. Having you in the stands makes all the difference.

It was a real arm-wrestle of a match, and despite the Storm winning the second half, every player on our side did their job, played hard and played together; if we can keep that up, we can keep on winning games.

Tonight we face off against the Warriors, who are sure to be hungry for a win following their loss to the Bulldogs last weekend. I think the win over the Storm showed we’re getting better at playing tough football for longer periods of time, so that’s pleasing in terms

of developing the team. This along with the defensive work we’ve been doing will be key in taking on the New Zealand side renowned for their physical brand of football.

I’d like to congratulate Tim Grant who tonight takes to the field in his 100th game for the Panthers. TG is a leader in our team and someone the younger players look up to, especially given his proud history as a local junior. I am sure he’ll prove to be one of the most admired players in Panthers history as his career goes on.

Tonight also marks Women in League round, with our players wearing pink in honour of all the ladies who work tirelessly to support our game, from grassroots junior league to the NRL. Thank you for all you do; we’ll be working to do you all proud on the field tonight.

The emphasis we’ve placed on our defensive work during training over the past few weeks has really paid off, helping to deliver our exciting win over the Melbourne Storm at home last weekend. It meant a lot to me and the boys to take victory over the defending premiers and top-of-the-table team, especially in front of our home crowd, and the spirit of our supporters that night definitely contributed to the way we played on the field.

There is a fair bit of pride in the chocolate jersey and having been in those colours for a win like one over the Storm was definitely a memorable moment.

Tonight we face another tough battle against the Warriors. The Kiwi side is

known for its size and strength, and while they’re sure to put us through our paces, we are definitely going to take the energy and enthusiasm from last week’s victory out onto the field and play the full 80 with plenty of heart. Today is also an important game for our team mate Tim Grant, being his 100 playing alongside such a strong competitor and a great bloke.

I hope you all enjoy the Women in League Round celebrations today – the game wouldn’t be the same without all the ladies working behind the scenes and on game day to make it all such a success, so thanks on behalf of all the team.

As I mentioned last week, this weekend is the Women in League Round and as part of the activities we invited our four Women’s Rugby League teams to the stadium for an exhibition game.

Last Thursday saw 125 volunteers from our junior league invited to attend the annual Panthers Women in League Luncheon. It was a chance to acknowledge their tireless work week in and week out to ensure that we have the canteens operating, the fields set-up, referees in attendance, medical people available and all the other jobs which are required to run our games each week. We certainly hope they all enjoyed the day as this is a small way the junior league can give back to our clubs.

To give our junior league clubs, players, officials and parents an update we have been having problems with our competition tables which are uploaded to SportingPulse each week. Unfortunately these are not giving a true indication of the results from the previous weeks and we are working with SportingPulse to get this rectified as soon as possible.

Re-gradings will be considered after one full round however, some minor re-gradings are currently being processed and will be effective from next weekend which should result in a more level playing field in those age groups.

The junior league relay kicks off with heat one this weekend seeing Blacktown City, Colyton, Mt Druitt, Glenmore Park, Lower Mountains, Rooty Hill RSL, St Patricks and St Marys competing. The top two teams will move through to the final which will be held in July.

Anyone interested in playing Women’s Rugby League can contact our office on 4725 6401 for further information.

Victory built on defence

I was very happy with our win against the Storm. It was a gutsy performance but the most pleasing aspect of the win was the way we defended. The communication and commitment was as good as I have seen from the boys all year.

We knew it would be a tight match and to go scoreless in the second half and still win is testament to the defensive effort the team put in.

Attack wise we turned over too much cheap ball and against a team like the Warriors and we can’t afford to make those mistakes. It will be a physical encounter with the Warriors who have big men in the forwards and also in their outside backs.

The Warriors are coming off a good

win against the Bulldogs and every time we play them it takes an 80 minute performance to get the win. We will be going into the game with the same defensive attitude and hopefully our attack can click and we can get across the line for a few more tries this week.

Thanks to all of the fans who get down here early to watch the team play. The boys love playing at home and we will be looking to remain undefeated at Centrebet Stadium with a good performance today.

Brad Tighe will wear the no.6 for Windsor this week

NSW Cup CoaCh

It’S great to be playing here in front of our home crowd at Penrith again this week, following a tough week of training off the back of last week’s loss to the Sharks.

We got off to a good start last week scoring in the first three minutes and going into the break up 12-6, but Cronulla were just too dominant in the second half. While we didn’t follow the game plan for the full 80 minutes, I said from when I took over that this team is a work in progress and I’m confident that we’ll continue to build on our training and the structures we’re working on, culminating in more wins as the season progresses.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all the fans who have come out early today to watch us play, especially the ladies in the crowd as we celebrate Women in League round. You help shape our game through all that you do, and we’re grateful for your continued support.

celebrate Women in League round.

As a front rower Grant is well-known for leading from the front and getting plenty of support from his teammates in the engine room.

Off the field he has had the same support – in particular from the women in his life.

Starting from his mum playing taxi and driving him to his games and being the manager of his junior teams all the way to his girlfriend Chloe Butler’s unwavering support – women have played a big part in his rugby league career. And he knows it.

“Every man needs a good woman behind us to be successful,” he said

“They have helped keep me grounded and make good decisions. It’s not just my mum and girlfriend that have been supportive but there are a lot of women at this club that if they weren’t here the club definitely wouldn’t run as smooth.

“Women have played a big role in my life not only on the field but off it as well. I wouldn’t be here today without them and it is a good we can show some appreciation today.”

Grant will use tonight’s game against the Warriors to push his case for another of his goals: representing NSW.

“To play for NSW last year was amazing and I have two games left to push my case and hopefully my form will be enough to get picked,’’ he said.

“The Warriors are always a tough team and have a massive forward pack which is a big challenge for myself. They can come up with anything and are as good as anyone on their day so we just need to play the same tough footy we played against the Storm and we will be right in the game.”

One thing for sure is there will be a lot of fans cheering him on.

“The whole family is very excited for Tim’s 100th game – there will be a big crowd coming out to watch him and we will be riding every tackle and run with him,” Kim said.

feature

Kim Grant can remember it like it was yesterday.

The year was 1995 and her son Tim had just finished his first game in the under-7s for St Marys (and yes even then TG towered over his teammates).

The young Grant looked up to his mum and uttered the six words Penrith Panthers fans would be forever grateful for: “I want to play for Penrith.”

“It was the first thing that came out of his mouth. It has always been his dream to play first grade for Penrith,’’ Kim said.

“As a parent to see your child reach their goal is very rewarding. It hasn’t come easy; there have been plenty of ups and downs and he still has more goals he wants to achieve, but I couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Grant reaches one of his goals tonight. The 25-year-old plays his 100th game for his beloved Panthers.

Born and bred at the foot of the mountains Grant grew up

supporting the Panthers.

He was a teenager starting to make a name for himself in the Panthers lower grades when the Panthers won the 2003 grand final.

A decade later and he joins some of that team in a very elusive club.

“It’s funny you look at the board in the club and there’s not that many people to play 100 games for Penrith, so to have my names up there with people I’ve looked up to like Craig Gower, Luke Lewis and Joel Clinton is something special,” Grant said.

“It’s one thing to play 100 games ... but to play 100 games for a club that I’m so passionate about is something I hold close to my heart.

“I’m not just passionate about the club, I’m passionate about the whole community; it is full of really good people.”

It’s apt that Grant plays his 100th game as the Panthers

community

panthers on the prowlThe Panthers Group, in conjunction with the Panthers on the Prowl Community Development Foundation, are pleased to announce a fantastic new initiative.

The Kokoda Leadership Project gives corporate sponsors or individuals the chance to complete a nine day trek over the legendary Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea with Phil Gould, Ivan Cleary, Charlie Lynn (MLC) and a couple of Panthers players from 12th

to 20th October, 2013

This unique opportunity will enable those who attend to gain a quality of understanding from some of the most recognised leaders in professional sport, both administrative and coaching, on how to lead and manage effectively.

It is aimed at raising public awareness of the Prowl programs through media coverage of the event and to raise much needed funds to support the Panthers on the Prowl Community Development Foundation, which has been enhancing life skills and opportunities for youth in the local area for the last ten years.

One student from seven different high schools in the Penrith area will be chosen to accompany the trekking group with each individual forming an

alliance with their corporate sponsors, with an understanding that they will engage in some community service and be available to speak of their unique experiences and the difference it has made to them, as a token of their appreciation.

Trekkers will sit around camp fires at night listening to how Ivan Cleary extracts the qualities required from his playing group to play and compete at the highest level, have access to Phil Gould’s insights almost 24/7 for a week, and Charlie Lynn’s boundless historical military knowledge whose narratives bring the whole campaign to life again.

Our Facebook post of the week goes to Greg Eccleston for his post about the Panthers victory over the Melbourne Storm. Praise-worthy performance by the Panthers. Undermanned underdog team up against the might of the Premiers. They defended as if it were a semi-final. Grant, Plum, Docker, Simmons, Whare, Segeyaro & Moylan were particularly outstanding, but there were 17 heroes wearing the chocolate & white. A result like that will boost that club. Congratulations.

David Simmons was the star of the show in the Penrith Panthers 12-10 victory against the Melbourne Storm. Simmons scored two tries, made three line breaks and ran the ball for a season high 226 metres.

Here he is pictured beating Australian fullback Billy Slater to the tryline for his second try.
