8/8/2019 Game Day - Portland State
1/6
By WILL C. HOLDENChronicle Sports Writer
Chris Wilson went to what he called a majority-blackschool in Maryland for junior high. In high school, heshifted gears to what he called an all-white school atC.M. Russell in Great Falls.
I cant sugar coat it, Wilson said. Thats justthe way it is.
Part of a military family, moving wasntunusual for Wilson. But moving to Montanawas certainly a culture shock. And listen-ing to him describe the experience issimilarly shocking.
As Wilson, an African-American andcurrent redshirt freshman cornerback forMontana State, traveled around Montanaduring track season, breaking 100-meter staterecords nearly every time he ran, he heard a similarrefrain.
There goes the black kid, again. It wasnt whispered, though he heardthe hushed voices, too.
They came as he walked throughthe halls of CMR. He said many ofhis classmates knew nothing about
minorities except what they saw onT.V., what they heard on the radio orwhat they read on the Internet.
There were a lot of stereotypesI had to deal with, Wilson said.In my first two years there, I wentthrough a lot of issues with racism.I cant count on my two hands howmany times Ive been called the Nword.
But for an impressionable teenager, the phone call from aGreat Falls police officer ordering Wilson to stop dating histeenage daughter for fear that a black person would ruin hisfamily took the cake.
It was one thing hearing stuff like that from people whowere immature or uneducated, Wilson said. But that was agrown man. Thats not a kid.
Suddenly, the normally extraverted Wilson became anintrovert out of necessity.
I wanted to get out of Montana, Wilson said. I honestlydid.
Then MSU assistant coach Justin Gaines gave Wilson acall. In a state where the African-American population is lessthan 0.6 percent, Gaines, an African-American who playedcornerback for the Montana Grizzlies, became someoneWilson could confide in.
Two years later, Wilson is part of a Bobcat team that isstarting an African-American quarterback for the firsttime in its long history in a conference that now has itsfirst African-American coach.

Kicking & punting: MSU continuesto excel in both areas. Jason Cun-ningham has proven he has ice in hisveins, as hes 13 o 14 on eld goals thisyear with one game-winner and one55-yarder.
Returners have still only gainedtwo yards o o Rory Perezs hangtime-heavy punts. Kicker Zach Brown,an all-conerence selection last year, and punter Thomas Duyndam have been equallydeadly or the Vikings.
The key or both teams will be blocking or kicksand punts. The Bobcats have missed ve point-ater tries this season because o shoddy blockingand they even had a punt blocked last week, too.
On the ip side, Montana State did man-age to block the game-tying eld goal try
rom Sacramento State last week, so PSUhas to be prepared too.
Returns & coverage: Everett Gilbertand Orenzo Davis have put togethersome nice kicko returns this season, but other than that both teams arerather pedestrian when it comes to
returning. As ar as covering kicks and punts, both teams
have been solid. And a week ater seeing onside kicks attempted
by each team at Sac State, dont expect to seeanything as whacky this week.

Passing: Outside o Washington State, his Portland State secondary may be the
ost talented Denarius McGhee has seenhis season. DeShawn Shead has provenimsel at the Big Sky level, and elloworner David Ross, who was ranked the
15th-best corner in the nation coming out high school when Nigel Burton recruitedim to Oregon State, has no business being
n the Big Sky. Throw in ballhawking saety Manoaatu, another member o Burtons outstanding rst
ecruiting class, and you see why even a team likerizona State wasnt able to decimate the Vikingshrough the air. With sizable and rangy corners like Shead andoss, dont expect another huge day rom Juliusloyd or Elvis Akpla. But McGhee has shown he canet by when opposing teams work to take away
hose weapons. And because PSU doesnt haveny linebackers or saeties who can stick with sloteceivers like Everett Gilbert, DeSean Thomas andruiz Siewing, along with tight ends like Kyle Beggernd Shane Robison, expect those players to come tohe oreront today. But the key to all o this is still McGhee. As goods the Vikings may be in coverage, they cant coverorever. And while Viking deensive end Carl Sommer, nother Oregon State transer, has made strides,
SUs pass rush is more anemic than the ones MSUas aced the past two weeks. It means McGhee will
have even more time to dissect deensestoday, which isnt good news or PSU. Rushing: Dont be surprised i yousee more o C.J. Palmer this week. Inhis 12-carry, 131-yard, two-touchdownperormance in MSUs 64-61 win overSacramento State last week, Palmershowed the kind o speed that has kepthim rom being a eature back his whole
career. And ollowing that perormance, he got muchmore work in practice this week than he has at any
other point this season. I Orenzo Davis isnt careul,he may end up becoming the change o pace backwith Palmer getting the majority o the carries.
Both should have success against Portland Statesrun deense, which, regardless o the presence osolid linebackers like Ryan Rau and D.J. Macarthy,is bad. Say what you will about the Oregon Ducksand how theyre going to run the ball on anybody, good rush deenses never give up 528 yards to anyopponent. I know the Vikings held both UC Davisand Idaho State to under 76 yards on the ground, butboth teams are the worst at running the ball in theirrespective conerences.
Meanwhile, MSU is the best rushing oense in theBig Sky, averaging ve yards a carry with 12 rushingtouchdowns. And the Bobcats may even get twostarting oensive lineman back this week. They have all
the personnel they need to run on the Vikings today. Edge: Montana State
WHEN MONTANA STATE HAS THE BALL
EDGE
Passing: The strong statement madeabout the Bobcats pass deense in thiscolumn last week was supported over therst 30 minutes against the Hornets, asMSU held Sac State quarterback Je Flem-ing to 51 yards on less than a 50 percentcompletion rate while picking him otwice. But everything changed in the thirdquarter, when MSU gave up a staggering258 pass yards, with Fleming completing 15 o 24passes or 258 yards and three touchdowns.
The true Bobcat pass deense is somewhere inbetween. It obviously hurt them a week ago nothaving Jordan Craney, having Darius Jones playwith a massive cast and having to rely more on truereshmen Sean Gords and Steven Bethley. All thoseparties should be back at ull strength and withmore seasoning this week, so it stands to reason thatagainst Portland States passing oense, which lookseven more lethargic than Sac States did coming in,a return to orm or MSUs pass deense, which wasthe second best in the conerence beore the Hornetgame, could be in order.
The key or the Vikings, like MSU, is their quarter-back. Connor Kavanaugh is not a great passer, but hehas a knack or avoiding pressure, which helps himnd open receivers and scramble or big gains. Thekey or MSU today will be containing him, which maybe tough or a battered MSU deensive line. But thesePSU receivers arent exactly special, so at the veryleast, dont expect MSU to be gashed through the airor a second straight week.
Rushing: Going back to the point justmade, keeping a lid on Kavanaugh is the
key to slowing all aspects o the PSUattack, and that includes rushing. Inwins against UC Davis and Idaho State,Kavanaugh rushed or over ve yards acarry. That orces deenses to key on PSUsquarterback, which opens up holes orthe craty Cory McCarey, who gained an
astounding 8,460 yards in three years in high school, and the speedy Washington Husky transer WillieGrifn.
In the Bobcats 28-10 win in an ugly, rainy game inPortland last year, they held Kavanaugh to 67 yardson 20 carries. He was sacked our times and passedor 67 yards. But the Bobcats had the services o ClayBignell, who led the team with eight tackles and 2.5tackles or a loss in that game, and a very healthydeense line, which logged 2.5 o those our sacks. Itsvery likely the Bobcats will have neither today.
Expect Bignell, who didnt practice all week, to misshis second straight game with an ankle sprain. Expectdeensive tackle Dan Ogden, who is consistentlybanged up, to continue to have pains growingand otherwise as he shits to deensive end tomake up or the loss o Dustin OConnell. Playerslike Aleksei Grosulak, lling in or Bignell, and ZachMinter, who is getting more work at deensive tackle, will have to prove they can play a ull 60 minutestoday. Ater getting scared last week at SacramentoState, expect that they will.

WHEN PORTLAND STATE HAS THE BALL

overall Portland State has the ability to sneak up onteams this season, and its talented secondaryand run-based pistol oense could both giveMSU trouble. But Montana State has too muchrepower on oense and will be too motivatedon deense or the Vikings to have a chance atslipping by in Bozeman today. The Bobcats come
out ring on all cylinders once again, and thistime they manage to put their opponent away inthe second hal.
