The teams met in a thrilling Eastern Conference Semifinal Series a year ago. After the Revolution won 2-1 at Gillette Stadium in the first leg, they pushed Sporting to extra time in the return match, before SKC took a 3-1 victory on their to an eventual MLS Cup championship.
In league play, Sporting are unbeaten in their last six meetings with the Revolution, and have a 502-minute shutout streak alive vs. the Revolution, their last goal conceded in the series coming July 30, 2011.
New England haven’t won in Kansas City since 2008, a 3-1 win April 9. Sporting have six wins in eight home matches in all competitions since, with two draws.

The Revolution are in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 8 points from 7 games. LAST MATCH
The Fire took the lead in the 16th minute when Harry Shipp’s incisive ball from near midfield found Quincy Amarikwa between defenders, and he slid the ball under an advancing Bobby Shuttleworth out of the New England goal.
But the Revolution drew level just after the hour. Patrick Nyarko clumsily bundled over Kevin Alston over in the box, and Lee Nguyen converted the resulting penalty low to Sean Johnson’s left.
The Fire were dealt a blow in the 73rd minute when Amarikwa, who was booked in the first half for diving, was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Andy Dorman.
But it was the home side that had the glorious chance for the winner, when Alston handled Victor Pineda’s rebound shot in the box, and referee Sorin Stoica pointed to the spot and sent off the Revolution defender. Yet Juan Luis Anangono's shot was far too close to Shuttleworth and the goalkeeper saved it to leave the teams deadlocked.
Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made one change to the team that defeated the Houston Dynamo 2-0 at Gillette Stadium. Darrius Barnes came into the back four for Jose Goncalves.

TEAM NEWS Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth saved a penalty kick for the first time in his MLS career to secure
the draw at Chicago. In his first 49 career MLS appearances, Shuttleworth was unable to stop four penalty kicks.
“He came up high on set pieces and crosses and he owned the box,” said Revolution head coach Jay Heaps of Shuttleworth. “He didn’t have a ton of work to do but when he was called upon to make a penalty save he did it right. That’s a huge one.”
There are some injury concerns coming out of the Fire match. Diego Fagundez had to come off at halftime with back tightness, but is expected to be available for the Sporting KC match.
José Gonçalves was unable to feature vs. Chicago after he was forced off before halftime of the Houston match with a right quadriceps strain and had not yet returned to full training during the week.
“With José, we’re still kind of how we were last week: seeing how we’re doing day-by-day. You never want to lose a guy [like that], and now we’ll see how it works this week,” said Heaps. “… [Diego’s] was an issue of high back tightness. Unfortunately, it was inhibiting the way he played. He was in a lot of pain, so we took him out.”
Said midfielder Lee Nguyen: “[Diego is] always a dangerous option up top. He’s always constantly moving so it’s tough for opposing defenses to get a read on him. We miss that from him when he’s off the pitch. It’s great if Diego can play the whole game, but if not we do have guys who can come in and help us out a lot.”
Chris Tierney came on to replace Fagundez in a wide midfield role, his first appearance in two matches after starting the first five matches of the season, all in the back four.
“He gave us a little more width, a little more service. But it takes away a goal scoring threat, even though Chris did a nice job of attacking. We were also able, I felt, close down that left flank with Chris going in,” said Heaps.
The Revolution made a significant pickup during the week when they claimed former club icon Shalrie Joseph in a waiver draft after his release by Seattle Sounders FC. Joseph signed with the team ahead of the 2003 season and played 9-1/2 seasons in Foxborough until he was traded to Chivas USA in August 2012. He has made 283 career appearances in MLS – including a Revolution record 261 appearances, with 40 league goals and 35 assists.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City made it five games in a row without loss in impressive fashion, rolling to a 4-0 win against the Montréal Impact on Saturday evening at Sporting Park. Sporting sit in a tie for top spot in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from 6 games. LAST MATCH
Sporting were fortunate to take the lead in the 31st minute. From a long throw-in by Sporting's Matt Besler, the ball hit Mallace's head as he tried to clear and looped just inside Troy Perkins' far post.
SKC finally doubled their lead in the 71st minute. Lawrence Olum won the ball inside the Impact area and sent it back out to Aurelin Collin, and the big center back curled his left-footed shot inside the near post.
Three minutes later, second-half substitute Jacob Peterson sent in a long cross from the right corner and Dom Dwyer beat two defenders at the edge of the 6-yard box to knock home a sliding shot.
The rout was complete in the 86th when Dwyer completed his brace, running onto Graham Zusi's looping cross and snapping a header down and into the net.
Sporting manager Peter Vermes made one change to the team that played to a scoreless draw with Real Salt Lake at Sporting Park. Lawrence Olum came into the team for the suspended Oriol Rosell.

last three games; they have recorded shutouts in three of the last four. “When you don't give up many goals and you have the kind of players we have in our attack, you can defend
and keep clean sheets and get a lot of points over the course of the season. They were very good but I always say that it starts from the front and goes to the back,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “Our pressure was very good tonight, it was very difficult for them to find time and space on the ball. I think that's the biggest reason we got a clean sheet.”
Dom Dwyer scored his first career two-goal game in MLS in the win against Montréal. Dwyer has four goals in his last four games.

“It was some performance. We are pleased with the clean sheet and a lot more goals than two weeks ago. It was a good result for us and obviously we are pleased. It gives us some momentum going into New England next week. We are feeling good right now and had fun,” said Dwyer.
Aurelin Collin scored his second goal of the season, his first since March 15 when he scored Sporting’s first goal of the season.
“It's a great reflection on one of the best qualities of Sporting KC; the winning and the physical aspect that we have. We can run a lot and we are always looking for opportunities to score. We were managing the game very well and at the end found opportunities,” Collin said.
Collin brought himself off with a quarter-hour to go in the match, as Alex Martinez made his second substitute appearance of the season. “He felt a little twinge in his hamstring, and normally guys will try and go a little bit longer, but he made the right decision coming out and not making it worse,” Vermes said. “Hopefully it'll just be a bit of a strain and he'll take a few days and recover.”
Graham Zusi recorded his third assist of the season, and has been involved in four of Sporting’s seven goals over the last three matches.
With Oriol Rosell suspended after being sent off in the RSL match, Lawrence Olum slotted into the holding role in central midfield, his first start since March 22.
“I thought he was very good and at the end, we pushed him back to central defender and that's the great thing about him – he's very versatile,” said Vermes. “The second half he had a very great game because he was a lot more disciplined. Sometimes when your team has the ball a lot you can get excited and get out of position and he did that a bit in the first half.”

“NGUYENNING” PENALTY KICKSLee Nguyen converted his fourth penalty kick as a member of the Revolution last Saturday, leveling the team’s match at Chicago in the 31st minute … after Kevin Alston drew the penalty, Nguyen stepped up and converted against Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson … Nguyen is now four-for-fi ve in penalty-kick attempts in his MLS career and is tied for fourth on the club’s career penalty kick chart.

Farrell, who played all of his minutes in 32 matches at right back last year, has seen time at both right back and center back in 2014 ... he’s twice been names to MLS’ team of the week - once as a right back and once as a center back - and has been noticeably controlling along the backline this year.
THE BEARD BETAndrew Farrell is styling a growing beard, and it’s all because of a bet ... in the off-season, Far-rell challenged his brother, Will, that he would grow a beard until he scored his fi rst MLS goal ... after coming oh-so-close against San Jose last year - Jon Busch made a shoe-string stop on a full extension to his right - Farrell is determined to score his fi rst MLS goal this year - or have a growing beard for the season.

50 THE NEXT STOP FOR ROWEIf Kelyn Rowe gets healthy enough to crack the starting lineup against Kansas City this Sat-urday, it will mark his 50th career start in MLS, all of which will have come with New England … Rowe, now in his third year in MLS, has made 65 appearances in three seasons … the midfi elder has scored 10 goals and recorded 13 assists in his young career, thanks in large part to a stellar sophomore campaign in 2013 where he led the team in assists with eight and also added seven goals.

YES, FAGUNDEZ IS STILL A TEENAGERDiego Fagundez, still a teenager, is now in his fourth year as a member of the Revs ... Fagun-dez, who turned 19 on Feb. 14, had a career year in 2013, scoring 13 goals (to tie for fi fth in MLS) and added seven assists to lead the club in scoring ... the Leominster, Mass., native was also voted team MVP … his 13 goals last season all came from the run of play, and marked the highest season goal total for a teenager in MLS history – and he is the only teenager in MLS history to score 10 or more goals in one season … Fagundez now has 17 goals in his career and holds the league record for goal scoring by a teenager, last set by Eddie Gaven (16 goals).

“ROWEING” TO WINSKelyn Rowe had one of the more impressive sophomore campaigns of any MLS player in recent history … the 22-year-old scored seven goals and added a team-best eight assists in 33 appearances last year, while developing his now familiar “Roweing” goal celebration … his two-year resume is so impressive that Rowe has already been cited as an upstart candidate for 2014 MLS MVP: “A lot of that falls on the shoulders of Rowe, who has the talent to be an MVP candidate. Seriously: He is one of my dark-horse picks this year…” – Matt Doyle, MLSSoccer.com analyst.
SHUTTLEWORTH THE STEADYBobby Shuttleworth is coming off a career season in 2013, and hopes to parlay that into another successful campaign in 2014 … last year, he made career-highs in appearances (23), starts (22), minutes played (2,063) and saves (64) … after assuming the day-to-day starting role in mid-April 2013, Shuttleworth went on to post some of MLS’ top goalkeeping numbers by midseason and garnered MLS All-Star consideration mid-season … a tall keeper who com-municates well and organizes his defenders well, Shuttleworth is now in his sixth MLS season with 50 appearances, 48 starts and a career goals against average of 1.37.
SECOND TIME AROUNDBrad Knighton has re-joined the Revolution for his second go-round in New England … the goalkeeper came to the Revs in December via trade with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on the same day that club legend Matt Reis retired … in exchange for Knighton, the Revs traded a conditional pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft to Vancouver … Knighton began his MLS career in New England and stayed with the Revs for three seasons (2007-2009), making six appear-
ances and posting a 1-2-3 record … following his initial stint with the Revs, Knighton spent the 2010 season in Philadelphia (3-3-1, 1.10 GAA) after the Union selected him in the Expansion Draft … Knighton played the last two seasons in Vancouver, making 21 appearances while posting a 9-6-5 record with fi ve shutouts.
Heaps on the goalkeeping situation: “I think both keepers have shown really well. It’s not one of these things where the day one starter gets named and the competition is over. This com-petition – and when I say it, it’s a very good competition – both guys root for each other and they know each other well. There’s a kind of support for each other. I think that it’s one of those things that is going to go on all year. It’s not going to be the day one starter, and then whoever it is, he’s the starter for 34 games. I think there’s going to be a battle throughout the season.”

Long before the sewing of the American fl ag as we know it -- before there were the United States, and hundreds of years before its slightly-altered stars and stripes emerged on the Revolution club badge – a fl ag of a different design was fl own proudly in the early colonies that now comprise New England.
Historic Revolutionary War artist John Trumbull’s depiction of the Battle of Bunker Hill featured a red fl ag with a green pine tree, which often served as a representation of the New England colonies. While historians argue the exact dates of origin of this early fl ag, over time, the design stood out as a symbol of honor for the territory.
It was a refl ection of unifi cation. It’s fl own as an homage to the region’s pride and passion.
No group has more pride or passion than Revolution supporters, who have fl own the fl ag of New England in Gillette Stadium, and the former Foxboro Stadium, since the club’s inception in 1996.
With such a deep connection to both club and country on many different levels, the fl ag of New Eng-land now adorns the Revolution’s uniforms – both as testament to the region’s revolutionary history, and as a visual representation of the club’s supporters.
Situated on the back of the jersey, at the base of the neck – a position reserved for the most mean-ingful representations on soccer jerseys - the fl ag of New England now lives in honor on the back of every New England Revolution jersey.
Sitting above the players’ last names, the Revolution and supporters alike are reminded that the club holds true to its community’s historic roots in reverence, and continues to proudly represent the historic region of New England, while symbolically bringing the supporters onto the fi eld, each and every game.

SPORTING KC NEWS & NOTESSporting KC moves top of East with 4-0 win over Montreal Sporting Kansas City moved atop the Eastern Conference standings with a 4-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday at Sporting Park. Forward Dom Dwyer scored twice in the win and now has four goals in his past four games as he moves into a tie for third place among MLS scoring leaders.
Aurelien Collin also added a goal, his second of the season and 15th of his Sporting KC career to break a tie with Jose Luis Burciaga, Jr. for the second most goals scored by a defender in club history behind Jimmy Conrad (17). The four-goal win matches the Impact’s largest margin of defeat in the team’s three-year MLS history and extends Sporting Kansas City’s unbeaten streak to five games in 2014.
Sporting KC loans Kevin Ellis to Energy FC
Sporting Kansas City announced on Monday that the club has agreed to loan defender Kevin Ellis to OKC Energy FC.
Ellis, 22, is in his fourth professional season as a homegrown player for Sporting Kansas City with nine games played across all competition to date in his career. The Sporting KC Academy product has started five games in all competition for the club this year and scored the game-winning goal against Cruz Azul in the 2013-2014 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.
In his rookie year, the Kansas City native debuted during the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and scored against CD Guadalajara in an international friendly at Sporting Park. Ellis made his MLS debut in 2013 and again featured in the U.S. Open Cup. He was also a member of Orlando City SC during their USL PRO championship season in 2013 while on loan with the Lions.
OKC Energy FC, one of Sporting Kansas City’s two official USL PRO affili-ates in 2014, are currently in fifth place in the 14-team USL PRO with a 2-2-0 record in their inaugural season. Led by head coach Jimmy Nielsen, the Energy FC roster includes Sporting KC loanees Christian Duke and Jon Kempin, as well as former Sporting Kansas City players Kyle Miller, Cyprian Hedrick and Michael Thomas.
Summer in the Soccer Capital series of events announced
Sporting Kansas City announced the team’s Summer in the Soccer Capital series of events, presented by Sprint, featuring an international friendly against English Premier League club Manchester City on July 23 at Sport-ing Park and official World Cup watch parties at KC Live! in the Power & Light District. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, April 25.
The two teams last met in MLS play was on November 6, 2013 at Sporting Park in the Eastern Conference Semifinals second leg. Sporting KC won the match 3-1 (4-3 on aggregate) in overtime to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Aurelien Collin opened the scoring in the 41st minute but New England would regain the aggregate lead with a 70th minute Dimitry Imbongo goal. Sporting KC responded with a 79th minute Seth Sinovic strike to force overtime. In the second session of overtime, Claudio Bieler scored the series-winning goal in the 113th minute.
April 26 is the first of three regular season meetings between the two sides this season.
