Cover / Voorblad Cape eland / Kaapse eland

Eland are highly mobile, nomadic and non-territorial, and the largest of the spiral-horned antelopes of Africa. Pallas origi-nally described the southern or Cape eland as Antilope oryx in 1766, based on a specimen from near Cape Town, but Wagner renamed it Taurotragus oryx in 1855. The Livingstone’s eland naturally occurs in the miombo wood-lands of central Zambia. It has a variable number of vertical stripes and is heavier than the Cape eland but is mostly regarded as a geographically isolated phenotype of the Cape eland. Historically, the Cape eland was found as far south as the Cape Peninsula, but not in western Namibia.

The role of sustainable utilisation

In this issue Chris van der Watt brings you an excellent article, the first in a series on the role of sustainable utilisation in effective game management and conservation. This justifies a well-deserved compliment to Wildlife Ranching SA (WRSA), whose predeces-sor, the SA Game Organisation (Sago), had as its vision already more than 21 years ago the following: “The profitable, sustainable utilisation of South Africa’s game and nature assets, in an orderly manner, to the benefit of the country and all its people.”

GAME & HUNT is also pleased as the very first edition of this magazine in December 1994 also quoted this vision in its table of contents. Furthermore, the words “Bewaring deur benutting / Conservation through utilisation” appeared as a footnote at the bottom of each page.

Chris also refers to the role of the Game Theft Act of 1991. This act was also the result of congress decision by Sago in 1988, which the then government attended to immediately. This act vested the legal ownership of game on exempted (adequately fenced) farms in the hands of the farm owner, thereby giving game a commercial value. This laid the foundation for the extensive expansion of game production and marketing that followed later, and which, by the way, also formed the basis for the success of this magazine.

Game ranchers have, through their own organisation more than 35 years ago, al-ready established the structures for current successes.

WILD & JAG JUNIE 2016 9

[Dit is so gereël – Redakteur]

Vriendelike wildbedryfgroete,Adri Kitshoff-Botha HUB WRSA

Biltongjag is ’n misoes

Ek gaan my eie plaas van 1 000 ha in die Marken / Limpopo-omgewing as voorbeeld gebruik.

Uitgawes per maand:Gemiddelde uitgawes per maand is R60 000 sonder ’n salaris vir my.

Totale inkomste per jaar:Jag: R241 400Dagfooie: R144 000Ander: R250 000Totale inkomste: R635 400 Uitgawes per jaar: R1 920 000Inkomste per jaar: R635 400Verlies per jaar R1 284 600

Indien enige persoon my bereke-ninge bevraagteken, kan hulle my kontak by [email protected].

Napha objection

As your GAME & HUNT magazine is always distributed to the Na-

mibia Professional Hunting Organisa-tion (Napha) office, where it used to be displayed, we need to inform you on the following decision taken on the last Napha Exco meeting:

Because of a decision taken by the Napha Scientific Data Committee

in 2004 against “breeding of colour variants”, as well as motions ac-cepted by the Napha membership with overwhelming majorities during the Napha AGM 2012 and 2015 against the “selective artificial breeding of wild animals for the hunting industry”, your magazine, publishing manifold adverts and articles promoting artificial breed-ing of wild animals, wild animals with ear tags and trophies pre-measured, etc, has roused severe repulsion amongst our membership.

The practice of selective artificial breeding of wild animals, which is rejected by important international conservation organisations and its promotion disallowed by important hunting shows in Europe, is particular-ly disturbing in times where hunting is under so much international pressure.

We therefore will no longer display the GAME & HUNT magazine in the Napha office.

Yours sincerelyKai-Uwe DenkerPresident Napha

Editor-in-Chief Jan van der Walt replies:

Thank you for your opinion. We would like to have the opinion

of our Namibian readers and else-where on this matter, seen against the background of our reputation of 21 years as an independent publication, which in the first place promotes the sustainable economic utilisation of our wildlife; highlights controversial ethical practices; promotes no specific pro-duction practices; and is very mindful of encouraging representative hunters, game ranchers and conservation or-ganisations to iron out differences and not to do harm to the reputation of the game and hunting industries. Already there is in producers’ and hunters’ circles an awareness of disturbing practices and a willingness to address them.

My Comment “Wildlife utilisation” in the May edition presents a good rendering of our approach.

What do our readers say?
