WHAT’S AHEADThe Akron Zips returns Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed, winning the regular season crown, and are slated to play the eighth seeded Bobcats of Ohio on Thursday, March 12 at noon. The intense quarterfinal battle can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on at SportsRadio1350.com, iHeart Radio, and TuneIn.com/AkronZips. Fans can also follow the action on GoZips.com via Live Stats. Akron is 7-3 as the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament and have advanced to the MAC quarterfinals seven straight seasons and 14-of-16 years. In 2012 and 2013, the Zips advanced straight to semifinal round. The Zips run of 13 semifinal appearances and seven finals appearances (10-of-14) are MAC records. The Zips are 2-3 against Ohio in the MAC Tournament. Akron owns a 30-19 overall record in the MAC Tournament and 10-4 in quarterfinal games. The Zips dropped the last two quarterfinal games No. 1 seed and 14th ranked Buffalo (82-46, 2019) and third seeded Eastern Michigan (67-58, 2018). Akron is 24-7 overall with a 14-4 league-best mark.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATSOhio enters the third game of the series with a 17-15 overall record and 8-10 in MAC play under new head coach Jeff Boals. The Bobcats have posted a 2-0 mark since the last time the two teams met, including an opening round tournament win against Central Michigan (85-65). Ohio is 12-5 (6-3 MAC) at home, 4-8 (2-7 MAC) on the road and 1-2 in neutral site games.
Ohio has three players averaging double figures in points led by Jason Preston with 16.8 points per game. Preston is shooting 51.5 percent from the floor with a 203 made field goals on 394 attempts. From long distance, he has buried 37 triples while shooting at a 40.7 percent clip. Preston adds a team-best 238 assists and 46 steals. He grabs 6.4 rebounds per game (206 rebs).
Ben Vander Plas follows with 15.7 points per game and averages a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game (214 rebs) with 86 assists, 32 steals and 21 blocked shots. Vander Plas has made a second-best 41 long-distance buckets while shooting 49.2 percent from the floor and 29.9 percent from deep. Jordan Dartis rounds out the double-digit scoring with 12.9 points per game and leads the squad from deep, draining 83 triples for a 38.1 shooting percentage. He adds 67 rebounds, 36 assists and 32 steals.
Ohio has four additional players with double-digit 3-point field goals made in Ben Roderick (.367, 36), Lunden McDay (.386, 27), Nate Springs (.400, 16) and Mason McMurray (.282, 11).
Defensively, Ohio limits its opponents to 68.5 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting from the floor and 32.9 percent from 3-point range, allowing 7.5 long distance strikes per night. The Bobcats caused 406 turnovers (12.7 to/g) with 205 steals (6.4 stl/g). Ohio slightly outrebounds the opponent by a +1.7 margin. The opponents snagged 1,079 (33.7) total boards compared to the 1,134 (35.4)total rebounds secured.

THE AKRON-OHIO SERIESTuesday’s game marks the 85th meeting in series history between Akron and Ohio, and seventh meet-ing for a Groce coached UA squad. Groce owns a 4-2 record against his former team. The Zips are 3-2 against the Bobcats in the MAC Tournament.
Akron holds an all-time 44-40 series advantage. The Zips have won 13 of the last 19 meetings, and Ak-ron is 26-13 against the Bobcats in Akron, winning 15 of the last 18 meetings at Rhodes Arena, includ-ing a 74-67 win on March 3, 2020. Ohio’s last win in the series was at the JAR last year 73-49 (3/2/19).
The Zips are 15-25 against OU in Athens, winning five of the last eight meetings at the Convocation Center, including an 88-86 win earlier this season. The Zips dropped two meetings in 2017-18 by scores of 99-75 (2/6/18) Rhodes Arena and 85-70 (2/4/17) at the Convocation Center.
THE LAST MEETING...TThe Akron Zips rallied from as many as 15 points down to stun the visiting Ohio Bobcats in a 74-67 decision at James A. Rhodes Arena. Ohio nearly earned a rare win. However, the Zips held the visitors without a field goal for more than five minutes down the stretch and limited the Bobcats to 17 second-half points to earn the victory. Senior Xeyrius Williams led Akron with 20 points, senior Tyler Cheese (Albany, Ga.) added 17, junior Loren Cristian Jackson tallied 13 and senior Channel Banks recorded 10 points for the Zips. In addition, Williams grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. After trailing by double digits for much of the game, Akron whittled away at the Ohio lead midway through the second half, closing to within two, 61-59, on a clutch 3-pointer from the right corner by Jackson with 10:59 remaining. The trifecta keyed a 12-0 run in a span of just 3:14, prompting a timeout by former Akron assistant and current Ohio head coach Jeff Boals. It was a contest that saw the Zips have one of their worst defensive halves of the season, allowing Ohio to tally 50 points before the break and shoot a scorching 63.3 percent from the floor. The Bobcats were especially lethal from long distance before intermission, sinking 6-of-13 of their attempts from beyond the arc. After the break, the defense could hardly have been better, holding Ohio to 17 points. After the two teams started off at a slower pace in the opening minutes, the pace and scoring both picked up as the opening half wore on. Ohio led 18-17 at the 10:27 mark of the half, but scored 32 points in the second half of the opening frame as the Zips couldn’t find their range from the field. Akron managed to knock down 52 percent of its shots before the break, but still found itself in a 50-37 hole heading to the locker room. Turnovers plagued the Zips, as they committed seven to Ohio’s two in the first 20 minutes. That disparity allowed the Bobcats to record a 12-2 edge in points off turnovers.
Jason Preston led the Bobcats with 19 points while Sylvester Ogbonda and Ben Vander Plas added 15 and 12, respectively.
MAC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS... AGAINThe 2020 Akron Zips claimed the MAC regular season title after defeating Ohio 74-67 and Kent State 79-76 during the final week of the season. The Zips have won the regular season title five times since the 2012 season, including three of the last five seasons. In addition, the 2020 championship marks the first time head coach John Groce has won a league title in his tenure.
AKRON IN THE MACThe Zips have posted a 59-36 mark (.617) in the last 95 games against the MAC East dating back to the start of the 2012 league schedule. Akron is 6-3 against the MAC East at the conference tournament during that stretch. Akron is 112-53 in the regular season against the West Division (.679), including winners of 55 of the last 72 regular-season games since divisional play began during the 1997-98 season. Akron is 67-17 (.795) at home in league play since the start of the 2011 MAC schedule. UA has seen a ton of success in league play since the start of the 2004-05 season, and is 183-90 overall (.669), including a 112-24 mark in MAC play at home (.822). The Zips’ 183 wins are the most in the league during that stretch. The Zips have won 101 of their last 147 MAC games (.685).
LONG DISTANCE ATTACKSAkron is shooting 36.1 percent as a team from beyond the 3-point arc (287-of-795), ranking 27th NCAA and 2nd MAC. The 287 made 3-pointers ranks 27th NCAA and 1st MAC while attempts (795) ranks 47th NCAA and 2nd MAC. Akron averages 9.3 triples per game, standing 27th NCAA and 1st MAC. The long distances attacks are spearheaded by Loren Cristian Jackson with 92 while Channel Banks and Xeyrius Williams follow with 76 and 66, respectively. Jackson ranks 20th in the NCAA, while Banks and Williams rank 92nd and 166th, respectively. Cheese has 44 made 3-pointers.
HOME SWEET HOMEThe Zips own a 419-130 (.763) all-time record at Rhodes Arena. In the last 15 seasons, Akron has posted a 214-34 (.863) record at the JAR. Under coach Groce Akron is 40-9 (.816) at home.
Akron went 12-4 at Rhodes Arena in Groce’s first year as head coach and followed with a 14-3 ef-fort. He became the third Akron coach since 1940 to win his first six home games in the first season as head coach. The Zips rattled off seven straight wins at the JAR before falling in the MAC home opener to Buffalo.
The Zips set the all-time longest home winning streak record at Rhodes Arena with 30 consecu-tive wins during the 2015-17 seasons, replacing the 26-game run the Zips made during the 1985-87 seasons under head coach Bob Huggins. The streak ranked No. 2 in the NCAA.
STARTING THE SEASON OFF RIGHTThe Zips are 73-46 (.610) all-time in season open-ers with a 59-12 (.829) home record and 14-34 (.292) on the road. Since the 2004-05, UA is 11-5 (.667) when opening the season, standing 8-1 (.875) at home, 3-4 (.429) on the road and 3-0 (1.000) under head coach John Groce. In addi-tion, Akron owns a 98-21 (.822) home-opening record and 33-4 (.888) at Rhodes Arena. The Zips have been winners in the last 18-of-19 home opening games. Akron is 18-8 in MAC openers, 10-1 at home since joining the league in 1992. Over the last 15 seasons, the Zips are 11-4 in MAC openers and 7-1 at home. Akron has won the last 7-of-8 MAC openers.
BEST START TO A SEASONThe 2015-16 Akron Zips started the season with a 3-0 winning streak. The three consecutive wins to open the season marks the best start in the Di-vision I era of Akron men’s basketball history. In addition, the 13-2 start was the best opening to a season in Akron basketball’s Division I era, while the Zips win over the Arkansas Razorbacks marked the fifth consecutive season the Zips posted a win over a Power Five Conference opponent.
GROCE DEBUTS WITH A WINZips’ head coach John Groce has spent over two decades on the sidelines of a basketball court as a coach and enters his 11th season as the lead man, and second at Akron. On April 6, 2017, Groce was named the 22nd head coach in Akron Basketball history.
On Nov. 11, 2017, Groce and the Zips accom-plished something that has only been done 10 times in Akron’s history, debuting a coaching ca-reer with a win. Akron defeated Cleveland State 67-57 in Groce’s Akron coaching debut to become the first coach since the 1984-85 season to win their initial game.
In fact, the last coach to start his Akron career with a win was Bob Huggins during the 1984-85 season against Western Illinois, 64-57. Prior to Huggins, six coaches were unsuccessful in accom-plishing that feat since Thomas Dowler did so in 1939-40 against Franklin, 34-25.

STRONG DEFENSIVE STANCE AND SACRIFICEThe Akron Zips have limited opponents to scoring 60 points or less in 12 games, including six games of 50 points or under. The Zips allow only 66.5 points per game, ranking No. 98 in the NCAA for scoring defense and 4th MAC. Akron limits opponents to 40.0 shooting from the floor (38th NCAA, 1st MAC) and 30.3 from long distance (42nd NCAA, 1st MAC). Akron has caused 410 turnovers (13.2 t/g) with 158 steals (5.1 stl/g). In addition, players are sacrificing their bodies by taking charges as Banks leads with 23 followed by Cheese (21) and Jackson (18).
2020 VISIONFour different players have at least 20 points 26 times this season. Loren Cristian Jackson leads with 12 20-plus point performances that includes five 30-plus performances, registering a career-high 35 points three times in addition to a 33-, 31-, a trio of 28-, a pair of 26- and a pair of 20-point efforts. Tyler Cheese owns eight of those performances, scoring 20 points three times coupled with 25-, a pair of 23-, and a pair of 21-point efforts. Xeyrius Williams and Channel Banks round out the 20-point performers list as Williams posted a career-best 25-point, 23-point, 22-point and two 20-point games. Banks is also a career-high with 21 points. In addition, the Zips have six 19-point efforts by Williams (NC Central, Miami), Cheese (YSU, Toledo) and Jackson (YSU, Kent State).

THE POLLS - ZIPS RANK IN MID-MAJOR TOP 25 POLLFor the first time since the 2016-17 season, Akron basketball returned to the The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. Akron is currently No. 15 (3/9/20). The Zips entered the poll at No. 19 with 194 votes to climb eight spots on the Jan. 6 rankings. The Zips were previously ranked 27th overall with 43 points, jumped five spots to No. 14 (1/13/2020), dropped to No. 16 with 336 points (1/20/2020), climbed to No. 12 after a pair of road wins (1/27/20), fell to 16th after two losses (2/3/20), but moved up to 15th with a lone win during bye week (2/10/20), moved up to No. 14 after two wins (2/17/20), fell to No. 18 after 1-1- week (3/2/20). The Zips swept the final week of the season In 2016-17, the Zips climbed as high as No. 7 in the mid-major poll, receiving 577 votes by Jan. 30. In addition, Akron received one vote for the AP Poll on Monday, Jan. 27 and Jan. 13. The Zips debuted at No. 63 in the first NCAA NET Rankings and now stands 73rd. Akron’s highest ranking of the season was No. 34. In the Ken Pom rankings, Akron is currently 84th overall and is at the top of the MAC in offensive efficiency according to Ken Pom (108.8) and 63rd in the NCAA (108.5). Akron has the third-best defensive efficiency rating in the MAC (97.7) and stands 103rd in the NCAA (98.8).
THE ZIPS IMPROVEMENT UNDER GROCE... MAC COACH OF THE YEARIn his third year at the helm, Groce became the third coach to earn MAC Coach of the Year honors, joining Keith Dambrot (2013, 2016, 2017) and Dan Hipsher (1998). Groce led the 2019-20 Zips to the Mid-American Conference regular season championship after being selected fifth in the MAC East preseason poll. Akron posted a 24-7 overall record and 14-4 in conference play. In addition, the Zips were 14-2 at home and 8-4 on the road including a 7-2 league mark.
In the first year under Groce (2017-18), the Zips had to find their groove again with a brand new roster, virtually starting from scratch. That year the Zips finished with a 14-18 overall record and 6-12 league mark, ranking 234th in offensive efficiency (101.8), 270th defensive efficiency (109.9) and 198th in pace of play (67.8). Akron lost in the first round of the MAC Tournament. In year two (2018-19), The Zips dramatically improved on the defensive side of the ball, finishing No. 22 defensive efficiency (94.1) and No. 1 in the MAC. Akron climbed 248 slots, however the slower tempo 254th (66.2) and offensive efficiency 259th (100.0) needed improvement. The Zips finished 17-16 overall and 8-10 MAC while advancing to the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament. This season, the Zips picked up the pace, improving 144 spots in the tempo ratings, ranking 110th (69.4). The new pace of play directly effects the offensive efficiency rating as the Zips climbed 196 spots for a No. 63 (108.5) ranking in the NCAA. On the defensive side of the ball, Akron stands at 103rd (98.8).

JACKSON NAMED MAC PLAYER OF THE YEAROn Wednesday, the Mid-American Conference announced its 2019-20 postseason awards and top individual honors as junior Loren Cristain Jackson was named MAC Player of the Year and head coach John Groce earned MAC Coach of the Year awards. “This honor is a reflection of Team No. 119, our administration, the coaching staff, support staff and Zips Nation,” Zips’ head coach John Groce said. “Thank you to all of those who work extremely hard to help our players be successful both on and off the court. It takes a village - #1Akron.” Jackson became the third player in Akron basketball history to earn MAC Player of the Year award, joining Isaiah Johnson (2017) and Romeo Travis (2007). Jackson was also named first team All-MAC. Jackson started all 31 regular-season games, averaging a team-high 19.8 points per game which ranked second in league scoring and 30th in the NCAA. In the 18 conference games, Jackson averaged 22.9 points per game. He recorded double-digit points in 27 games, including a season-high 35 points three times against Ohio, Bowling Green and Buffalo. He scored 30-plus points on five occasions, adding a 33-point performance against Toledo and a 31-point effort at Central Michigan. Jackson leads the top-seeded Zips from behind the 3-point arc, draining 92 triples which ranks second in the league and 23rd in the NCAA. His 42.8 shooting percentage from deep is also a team-best and ranks first in the MAC and 14th in the NCAA. Jackson dishes out 4.5 assists per game with a team-high 138 assists. In addition, Jackson connects from the free throw line at a high rate, shooting 87.7 percent on 135-of-154. During the season, Jackson eclipsed the 1,000-point career scoring mark, becoming the 46th player in Akron history to post over 1,000 points. He currently ranks 04th on the Zips all-time scoring list with 1,075 points in 64 games played. In addition, Jackson earned the #LouHensonAward National Player of the Week award along with four MAC East Player of the Week honors.
LIKE MONEY IN THE BANK$ - ALL-MAC DEFENSIVE TEAMSenior Channel Banks earned All-Defensive team honors as the Zips lockdown defender often guarding the opposition’s best player. Defensively, he collected a team-high 33 steals with seven blocked shots. On the other side of the ball, Banks ranks third in the MAC in 3-point field goal percentage, draining 41.1 percent from long distance. His 2.5 triples per game is second for the Zips and ranks 7th in league play. Banks buried 76 long-range shots and scored in double figures in 20 games which includes a career-high 21 against UMass. He averages 10.8 points per game.
PASS THE CHEESE - 2ND TEAM ALL-MACSenior Tyler Cheese was tabbed second team All-MAC while averaging a second-best 15.7 points per game for the Zips, ranking ninth in the MAC. He registered double-digit points in 25 games, 19 straight games, with a season high of 25 points. He posted eight games on 20-plus points and is fourth on the squad in 3-pointers made (42). In the MAC, he stands seventh in free throw percentage (.821, 111-of-135), eighth in assists (3.4) and ninth in assist/turnover ratio (1.3). Cheese recorded his first double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Cheese grabs a third-best 4.8 rebounds per game with 145 total rebounds, dished out 101 assists and tallied a team-best 33 steals. He earned MAC Player of the Week.
ARE YOU XEYRIUS? - 3RD TEAM ALL-MACSenior Xeyrius Williams was named third team All-MAC while nearly averaging a double-double 13.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He is third in scoring for the Zips and ranks 16th in the MAC. He has scored with double figures 24 times this season, including a career-high 25 points. He registered 12 double-doubles and grabbed double-digit rebounds 17 times, including a career-best 15 rebounds. On the glass, Williams ranks third in the MAC with a team-high 293 boards. He drained a third-best 66 long-distance shots for Akron and leads the league in free throw percentage (.908, 69-of-76). In the NCAA, Williams ranks ninth in defensive rebounds per game (7.74) which is tops in the MAC, 38th double-doubles (12), 40th total rebounds (293), and 41st in rebounds per game. Williams leads the squad in blocked shots (27) and is fourth in steals (25). He earned MAC East Player of the Week three times.
R&R IN THE PAINT...Senior Deng Riak and Junior Camron Reece are huge pieces for the Zips frontcourt and they don’t let the defense relax. Combined, the two big-men average 10 points and 10 rebounds per game which allows the offense to flow and forces defenses to pick their poison.
Riak is the Zips defensive anchor, seeing plays before they happen and making sure the four other players are in position to guard. He averages 20 minutes per game, scores 3.8 points and grabs 4.9 rebounds on average. He secured 153 total rebounds and blocked 23 shots.
Reece clocks 18-minutes per game and averages 5.9 points on 60.5 percent shooting from the floor. He scored in double-digits five times this season, including a career-high 13 points on two occasions, vs Malone and Marshall. Reece is an electric player that gets the crowd involved as a result of his supreme athleticism and high-flying dunks. He grabs 4.4 rebounds per game (132 rebounds) and posted 11 blocked shots.

THE LEBRON JAMES SHOE DEAL AND NIKE APPARELSince June 2008, the Akron men’s basketball program has been partnered with Nike under which the Zips’ shoes, game uniforms, warm ups and accessories are licensed under the Nike and LeBron James Trademarks. The Zips are just one of three college programs in the country that are partnered with the LBJ line of Nike equipment, the others are Ohio State and Duquesne. Akron rocks six pairs of LBJ kicks in three different styles all customized to Akron Basketball.
The Akron Zips men’s basketball team has five different uniforms. Akron will continue to sport the grey set of uniforms modeled after the Team USA uniforms, which were new for 2017-18. The Grey uniforms feature the script Akron on the chest in blue outlined in the university gold. The numbers are depicted the same way which matches the blue piping that outlines the uniform. The shorts feature the Z-logo on both sides of the leg and are piped with the blue.
For 2018-19, the Zips will showcase new home and away, whites and blues, with combinations that brings back the gold. Both sets feature the script Akron across the chest in gold with the white set accented by blue outlines and piping, while the blues are outlined in white.The pants feature the Z-Logo on one leg and script Akron on the opposite side. Also, the Roo-Head debuts on the waistband.
Speaking of Gold, Akron’s “Gold Standard” uniforms are back. Yes, Akron will be rockin gold uniforms once again. The Team USA inspired uniforms feature the script Akron in blue across the chest with the Roo-Head on the sides of the shorts. The waistband features the Z-Logo. The final uniform is a Fear The Roo uniform that is anthracite (dark grey) as the base color. The front of the jersey features the blue and gold Roo Head Logo with a blue number outlined in gold. The shorts features Zips in gold script on the waistband with a Roo Head on the left leg and script Akron logo on the right leg in gold.
JACKSON 46TH MEMBER OF AKRON’S 1,000 POINT CLUBJunior Loren Cristian Jackson became Akron’s 46th member of the 1,000th point club as the Zips fell 78-60 to Bowling Green at the Stroh Center. Prior to the game, Jackson needed only 24 points to enter the exclusive group at Akron as he scored his 1,000th career point against Ohio in a 35-point scoring effort. Jackson matched that career-high scoring effort against Bowling Green. In less than two seasons at Akron (61 games), Jackson has eclipsed the 1,000-point mark. Last season he scored 460 points and so far this year he has registered 551 points for 1,011 total points. Jackson eclipsed the 1,000th point threshold at Akron on a 3-pointer from the far wing while being fouled. It was his 24th point of the game and he completed four-point play for a 1,001 total. He led all scorers with his second 35-point performance of the season. Jackson tallied 13 points in the first half and followed with 22 in the final frame.

• Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included GoldenBlue Devils, Tip Top-pers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos, and Cheveliers.

• The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot.
• “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as “Zippy” was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite’s first use of the name “Zippy” came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing “Mascot - ‘Zippy’ - Charles Huettner.”

THE ZIPS LAST TIME OUTThe Akron Zips secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 79-76 win over rival Kent State. The Zips finished the regular season 24-7 overall and 14-4 in Mac play to earn top honors and a first-round bye. Akron had four players score in double figures, and needed every bit to win the intense a rivalry game. Senior Xeyrius Williams had another monster double-double for the Zips, leading all scorers with 22 points and all rebounders with 12 rebounds – it marks his 12th double-double of the season. Junior guard Loren Cristian Jackson, senior Channel Banks senior Tyler Cheese also reached double figures with 16, 14 and 10 points, respectively. It was Jackson’s two free throws with 10.5 seconds left that put Akron ahead 77-74. A foul on the ensuing possession sent Kent State freshman guard Giovanni Santiago to the line, where he hit both charity tosses before two more free throws by Banks with 3.7 seconds left carved out the final margin of victory for the Zips. Kent State missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The clutch moments came fast and furious down the stretch, from Cheese’s 3-pointer with 2:21 remaining to numerous counterpunches by Kent State to tie the game after Akron edged ahead. However, it was the frequent whistles by the officials that had as big an impact on the game, with the Zips scoring six key points in the closing minutes from the line and Kent State (19-12, 9-9 MAC) notched two of its own after a foul call on Jackson with 30.2 seconds left, following the junior guard’s layup to put his team ahead by four, 73-69, with 36.9 seconds left.
The dramatic finale came after Kent State managed to edge ahead early in the second half using a 6-0 run, but the game remained close in the ensuing moments thanks to several big plays by the Zips, including a thunderous driving dunk by freshman guard Greg Tribble (Cincinnati, Ohio), who sprinted along the baseline before elevating and posterizing Kent State forward Mitch Peterson despite Peterson’s four-inch height advantage and closed the Akron deficit to 53-50. That set up a thrilling stretch in which Williams drilled consecutive, very different 3-pointers to erase a 55-50 Kent State lead and put his team ahead by one with 8:12 remaining. The first triple came from several feet beyond the top of the arc, banking in cleanly as Williams shrugged his shoulders and smiled. Seconds later, he shed a Kent State defender on the fast break with a pump fake, then calmly swished another deep shot for a 56-55 Akron edge. The first half was a similarly back-and-forth affair that saw the two rivals trade leads, big shots, defensive stands and game-turning plays. With the Zips’ seniors suiting up in front of their home crowd for the final time, it was those seniors who fittingly spearheaded the strong start. Williams scored from inside and outside on his way to a game-high 11 points before the break. He also dominated on the glass, leading all rebounders with seven caroms in the half. Banks was also money before intermission, notching 10 points, including conversions on both of his 3-pointers. Overall, the Akron attack was operating at peak efficiency, turning the ball over just four times in the first 20 minutes and shooting 46.4 percent from the field, along with perfect 8-of-8 foul shooting. Sophomore guard Anthony Roberts led Kent State with 17 points in the loss. Neither team could build a lead bigger than six points in the first half and the arch rivals were nearly even in multiple statistical categories, including rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots, all of which saw the Zips and Flashes within two of each other. JACKSON NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEKLoren Cristian Jackson was named College Insider #LouHensonAward National Player of the Week and MAC East Player of the Week after two spectacular performances on the road. Jackson had a historic week by establishing a new career-high scoring mark with red-hot shooting en route to collecting his 1,000th career point. He led the Zips to a pair of road wins over Miami (81-60) and Ohio (88-86) while averaging 27.5 points per game. Jackson shot a sizzling 70.0 percent from the field (21-of-30), including an incredible 78.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (11-of-14). He added 4.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. In the opening game the week against Miami, Jackson scored 20 points with a nearly flawless effort from deep, draining 4-of-5 (.800) triples and finishing 8-of-13 (.615) from the floor. He grabbed two rebounds, had a pair of assists and collected one steal. Jackson finished the week in extremely efficient fashion, posting a career-high 35 points on 17 shot attempts at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. He went 7-of-9 (.778) from downtown and 13-of-17 (.765) from the floor. Jackson buried both of his free throw attempts and dished out five assists with two rebounds and two steals.

According to legend, the “Wagon Wheel” trophy traces its beginnings to the spring of 1870 when Akron industrialist John R. Buchtel set out for the town of Kent in search of a site to es-tablish a college. In the muddy Ohio fields, however, his wagon became bogged down in the area where Kent State University is currently located. When horses pulled the wagon, a wheel came loose and became buried until it was discovered in 1902 during the construction of a pipeline along the Western Reserve Trail.
The wheel eventually fell into the possession of Dr. Raymond Manchester, who as the Kent State Dean of Men in 1945, suggested the local historic artifact be offered as the trophy to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game.
Through the 2017 game, the series is tied at 23–23–1 in Wagon Wheel games. Dating to 1923, Akron leads the all-time series on the gridiron, 34-24-2.

JACKSON EARNS MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - 4 TIMESJackson was named MAC East Player of the Week four times this season. He tallied the first award on Jan. 6, 2020, averaging 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in a pair of wins over UMass and EMU. The second weekly honor came on Jan. 27/2020 along with the National Player of the Week accolades, establishing a new career-high scoring mark (35 pts) en route to collecting his 1,000th career point while averaging 27.5 points per game. Jackson shot a sizzling 70.0 percent from the field (21-of-30), including an incredible 78.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (11-of-14). The third MAC East honor came on the heels of a win over BGSU and CMU. Jackson averaged 29.5 points with five steals (2.5 stl/g), four assists (2.0 ast/g) and three rebounds (1.5 rebs/g). The most recent honor came with back-to-back 35-point performances in a 1-1 week, falling to BGSU and defeating Buffalo on the road. Jackson scored a combined 70 points (35 ppg) while grabbing eight rebounds (4.0 rbs/g) and dishing out eight assists (4.0 ast/g). He connected on 45.3 percent of his shots from the field (24-of-53), 29.2 percent from deep (7-of-24) and 93.8 percent from the free throw line (15-of-16) - March 2, 2020.
CHEESE NAMED MAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEKCheese stuffed the stat sheet last week as he led the Akron Zips to a pair of Mid-American Conference victories. For the week he shot 52.0 percent from the field (13-of-25), 55.6 percent from downtown (5-of-9) and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-of-11). Cheese led Akron to its 20th win of the season and sixth win on the road as Akron defeated Western Michigan 71-67. He recorded his first double-double of the season with game-high numbers, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Cheese knocked down 7-of-14 shots from the floor and 3-of-5 from deep. He also buried 6-of-7 free throws while posting three steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Against Miami at home, cheese led Akron to a 75-65 win. He scored a team-high 17 points along with Xeyrius Williams. Cheese was just as efficient in the 21st win of the season, connecting with 6-of-11 from the floor, 2-of-4 from long distance and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. He secured six rebounds, handed out four assists and registered one steal.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN...Akron is 8-4 on the road this season with an impressive 7-2 record when traveling to league foes. The Zips own a +6.4 scoring margin and have outscored the home team (+77, 919-842). Akron averages 76.6 points per game as the visitors while shooting 44.7 from the field and 37.7 percent from downtown with 9.8 made triples per game. On the glass, the Zips edged the home team, 454-446 (+0.7).
DEFENDING THE JARAkron is 14-2 at James A. Rhodes Arena and had a 12-game home court winning streak snapped by Toledo and fell to Buffalo the next time out. The Zips only allow opponents to score 62.7 points per game at home on 38.2 percent shooting from the field (369-of-966) and 28.9 percent from deep (95-of-329) with only 5.9 per game. Akron averages +13.6 scoring margin and has allowed 1,003 total points in 16 games – 99 points was the most for the opposition at Rhodes Arena this season. In fact, Akron has held nine teams to 60 points or less, including five teams to 50 or less.
WILLIAMS EARNS A THREE OF MAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDSWilliams earned a three MAC Player of the Week awards, including the final one of the regular season. He first won the award on 12/9/19 after averaging 20 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 blocked shots and 1.0 steals per game. He connected with 44.1 percent of his shots from the field (15-of-34) which included a 50 percent showing from beyond the 3-point arc (8-of-16). For the week, he scored 40 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked two shots and had two steals to lead the Zips over Marshall and Southern.
The second award came in MAC play (1/13/20) as he led the Zips to a pair of wins over Western Michigan and Ball State, averaging a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 66.7 percent from all areas of the court and connected on eight 3-pointers, 12-of-18 from the field and 8-of-12 from deep. Williams scored 34 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, had three steals and dished out two assists.
For the last league award, Williams led the Zips to the Mid-American Conference Championship and No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament with two spectacular performances. Williams averaged a double-double in the final week of the season scoring 21.0 points and grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game. He tallied 42 points with 20 rebounds while shooting 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the field, including a 35.7 percent (5-of-14) effort from deep. In addition, Williams was perfect from the free throw line, knocking down 11 courtesy buckets. He added two steals and a blocked shot.

During his 24-year coaching career, he led his teams to 19 postseason appearances, including two Mid-American Conference championships and a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance, while improving and sustaining success in the classroom at every institution. Groce inherited a highly successful Akron Zips basketball program that is viewed as one of the top mid-major programs in the nation, and he is determined to keep moving the needle forward. In his first season at the helm, Groce was faced with the daunting task of rebuilding a staff and a competitive roster, which was a success. However, mid-season injuries decreased the size of the active roster and altered the style of play. Despite those setbacks, Akron made the adjustments and advanced to the quarterfinals of Mid-American Conference Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio for the 14th straight year. The Zips improved in year two, and again, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tournament, making it 15-straight years. Prior to joining the Zips, Groce was head men’s basketball coach at the University of Illinois for five seasons. During his tenure at Illinois, he led the Illini to an average of 19 wins per season along with postseason appearances in three of his first four years in Champaign, owning a 95-75 record. He arrived at Illinois after four seasons as head coach at Ohio University, where he led the Bobcats to an 85-56 overall record as well as Mid-American Conference Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2012. Ohio was the story of the 2012 Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed with victories over No. 4 seed Michigan followed by No. 12 seed South Florida. The Bobcats made a strong push for the Elite Eight before falling to No. 1 seed North Carolina in overtime in the regional semifinal. It marked just the second time in Ohio’s school history and first since 1964 that the Bobcats won multiple games in the NCAA Tournament. Ohio finished the 2012 season with a school-record 29 wins and was known for its pressure defense, ranking second nationally in turnover percentage and third in steals percentage. Groce has a total of 24 years in the coaching profession and has been part of teams that have made 19 postseason appearances. His record in 15 years as an assistant was an impressive 349-156, giving him a combined record of 511-273. Groce earned his first head-coaching job at Ohio following four seasons on Thad Matta’s staff at Ohio State from 2005-08, the first two as assistant coach and last two as associate head coach. During Groce’s time in Columbus the Buckeyes amassed a record of 105-35, advanced to the NCAA Championship game in 2007 and second round in 2006, claimed back-to-back outright Big Ten Championships in 2006 and 2007 and won the NIT in 2008. Groce played a key role in recruiting many of the top players at Ohio State and was named Rivals’ 2006 National Recruiter of the Year. In all, Groce spent eight years as an assistant under Matta. Prior to his time at Ohio State, Groce served three years on Matta’s staff at Xavier from 2002-04 and one season at Butler in 2001. The Musketeers went 78-23 and made three straight NCAA appearances, advancing to the second round in 2002 and 2003 and the Elite Eight in 2004. Xavier also won consecutive Atlantic 10 titles in 2002 and 2003. Butler, meanwhile, went 24-8 and won a conference crown in 2001 while also advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Groce entered the Division I coaching ranks as a member of Herb Sendek’s staff at North Carolina State from 1997-2000. The Wolfpack went 73-58 overall and advanced to the NIT in each of the four seasons Groce was in Raleigh, including a trip to the semifinals in 2000. Groce got his start in coaching as an assistant at his alma mater, Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. Groce spent three years on Paul Patterson’s staff from 1994-96, helping lead the Trojans to a 69-32 record and a pair of trips to the NAIA national tournament. Groce played for Patterson for three years from 1991-93 before making the transition to a student assistant role as a senior. Taylor compiled a 90-16 record and made three trips to the NAIA Tournament during Groce’s playing career, including a 1991 Final Four appearance during his freshman season. Groce, 48, earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Taylor in 1994. He and his wife, Allison, have two sons, Conner and Camden, and a daughter, Cate.
John Groce enters his third season as the University of Akron head men’s basketball coach. He became the Akron Zips 22nd head coach on April 6, 2017. Groce has a long track record of building championship caliber teams and all-around successful young men.
