Introduction This guide describes GSIS and the tools and techniques that you need to enter notes and use the TV Stats display.

Typographical Conventions
This guide uses the following typographical conventions.
Keystrokes
Keys that you press are set in bold type and enclosed in angle (<>) brackets. For example:

The GSIS Software
Introduction Welcome to the Game Statistics and Information System (GSIS). This system has been specifically designed for the National Football League (NFL) to capture play-by-play game data at each NFL stadium. In addition, GSIS generates timely documentation such as the game book and statistical reports. These documents are distributed to the media and used by the NFL club and League offices.
The GSIS Interface
The GSIS interface consists of two main parts: Setup and Game Play.
Set Up
The Set Up portion is used to perform tasks that are required prior to the start of a game. This is referred to as pre-game setup in this guide..
In Game
The In Game portion is used to enter game play information and view game statistics. This is referred to as game play in this guide..
FTP Scoreboard Updater
The FTP Scoreboard Updater is used in those stadiums that have established interfaces with their stadium scoreboard display systems. The FTP Scoreboard Updater program sends real-time game statistics to the scoreboard computer, which displays the statistics on the scoreboard.
GSIS Training Mode
GSIS training mode is used to enter play-by-play for the purposes of training users.
View Historical Games
The View Historical Games program is used to view data that has been entered for games that have already been played.
TV Stats TV Stats are used to display the game statistics on the TV monitors in the press box.

User Roles
Introduction This section introduces the concept of user roles, and explains the tasks that each role can perform during a game.
What Are User Roles?
All of the laptops can perform any of the following roles: Primary Data Entry, Audit, PR Home, and PR Visit. The role played by each laptop is determined when that laptop is logged into Windows. The user roles are defined below.
Primary Data Entry
The Primary Data Entry (PDE) role allows the operator to enter play information during a game.
Audit
The Audit role allows the operator to verify and correct game play information entered by the PDE operator. The auditor can edit data only when the PDE laptop is communicating with the Audit laptop.
PR Home
The PR Home role allows the operator to view game statistics. This role does not allow the operator to modify any of the data in the system; however, he or she can enter notes about each play of the game.
In stadiums where the FTP Scoreboard Updater is used, this laptop provides the backup feed to the scoreboard computer.
PR Visit
The PR Visit role allows the operator to view game statistics. This role does not allow the operator to modify any of the data in the system.
In stadiums where the FTP Scoreboard Updater is used, this laptop provides the primary feed to the scoreboard computer.

GSIS Design
Introduction Although GSIS runs on a Microsoft Windows platform, every effort has been made to minimize your reliance on a mouse to navigate the screens and perform actions. This has been accomplished through the extensive use of keyboard shortcuts and function keys. We highly recommend that you master these techniques.
Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows Elements
There are a number of keyboard shortcuts that you can learn to minimize your use of a mouse in Windows elements.
Field Navigation
The <Tab> key and the <Shift+Tab> key combination are used to move the cursor from field to field on any screen.
Combo boxes
A combo box contains a list of valid entries.
To display the list, use the <Tab> key to access the desired combo box, and press <Alt+?>.
To select an entry from a list box, use the <?> and <?> keys to highlight the desired item, and press <Enter>.
You can also select an entry from the list box by typing the first letter of the entry that you want to select. For example, pressing <G> will bring you to the first entry in the list that starts with the letter G.
Check Boxes
Check boxes represent a true or false condition. To set the value of a check box, use the <Tab> key to select the appropriate check box on the screen, and press <Spacebar> to toggle the value of the check box.
Radio Buttons
Radio buttons represent a group of choices. Only one selection within a group of radio buttons can be selected at one time. To make a choice within a group of radio buttons, use the <Tab> key to select the radio button group, and use the <?> and <?> keys to select the desired radio button.
Exiting a Dialog
Press <Esc> to close an open dialog.

Menu Commands
The menu bar appears on the screen just below the title bar. The menu bar contains menus that list available commands.
To access a menu, press <Alt> to activate the Menu bar, then press underlined letter of the desired menu. For example, if you want to access the File menu, press <F>. Do not use the <Alt+F> key combination.
To select a menu command, use the <?> and <?> keys to highlight the desired command, and press <Enter>.
You can also select a menu command from the menu by typing the underlined letter of the command that you want to select. For example, if you have accessed the File menu, and you want to select the Print Reports… command, press <P> to display the Print Reports dialog. You do not need to press <Alt> again.

Introduction This section provides descriptions and samples of GSIS setup screens.
TV Stats Screen (Shift+F3)
You access the TV Stats screen by pressing <Shift+F3>.
The TV Stats screen is used by PR personnel to display the game statistics on the TV monitors in the press box.

Startup Screen (Shift+F4)
The Startup screen appears when GSIS is first run.
You can access this screen anytime during a game by pressing <Shift+F4>.

The Startup screen contains the following parts.
Menu Bar
The Menu bar includes menus and commands.
Section Title
The section title displays the title of the application area that you have entered.
Navigation Bar
The navigation bar contains icons that you can use to access specific areas of GSIS. The user can click on an icon, or use the keyboard shortcut to enter each section. The navigation bar contains two parts: Set Up and In Game. Set Up contains the functions that are primarily performed before the game starts. In Game contains functions that generally occur while the game is in progress.

System Status Message
The system status message displays useful information throughout the application. This message will change depending on what functions are executing.
Status Bar
The status bar displays meaningful information about the current game, as well as some context-sensitive information. The status bar consists of the following parts:
?? Description of what is currently occurring in GSIS, as well as useful information while navigating
?? Count of Open Plays
?? GSIS Connection Status Message
?? The NFL week number in which the game is being played
?? Date of the selected game

The Defensive Stats screen contains the defensive statistics for each player on both teams.
Click the scroll bar to scroll between the regular and special team stats for each player.

Entering Play Notes
Introduction The following sections describe how to enter play notes and how to mark plays.
Displaying the Notes Screen
To display the Notes screen, press <Shift+F11>. The Notes screen appears.

Entering a Play Note To enter a note about a play:
1. Select the play from the play list for which you want to enter a note.
2. Press <Tab> to enter the Notes and Markings area.
3. Type the note for the selected play.
4. Click Save to save the note or click Clear to remove the note.
Deleting a Play Note To delete a note about a play:
1. Select the play from the play list that contains the note that you want to delete.
2. Press <Tab> to enter the Notes and Markings area.
3. Click Clear to remove the note.

Displaying the TV Stats
Introduction The following sections describe how to select the statistics that you want to display and how to set the time interval between each set of statistics.
Statistics Display There are several ways to display statistics using the TV Stats screen.
Rotating Statistics
Rotating statistics display a full screen of stats on the TV monitors. You can select the screens that appear, the order in which they appear, and the length of time for which each screen is displayed.
Scrolling Statistics
Scrolling statistics display one line at a time from a selected statistics screen. Each line of stats appears at the bottom of the TV monitor for one second.
Pick List
The pick list allows you to select specific statistics that you want to display. For example, you can display the rushing statistics for one player or all of the passing statistics for an entire team.
Free Style
You can also display any text that you want using the free style feature. For example, you can display a comment about a particular player or event in the game. You can also create templates to use when you want to display common statistics for more than one player or play of the game.
Special Effects
GSIS provides you with several effects that you can apply to the statistics that you select from the Pick List and Free Style tabs.
Activating the TV Stats Connection
You must first open the TV Stats screen and activate communications between GSIS and the Chyron box. The Chyron box provides the feed from GSIS to the TV monitors.
TV Stats Activation Panel
The TV Stats Activation Panel contains the following buttons:
?? Activate Chyron TV Communication – Clicking this button starts communication between the Chyron box and the TV monitors.
?? Deactivate Chyron TV Communication – Clicking this button stops communication between the Chyron box and the TV monitors.

1. To display the TV Stats screen, press <Shift+F3>. The following screen appears.

2. Click Activate Chyron TV Communication. GSIS connects to the Chyron box and begins to load information. You will see a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. This will take a few minutes. After everything loads successfully, the TV Stats Control Panel appears.

Control Panel Tabs
The TV Stats Control Panel consists of the following four tabs:
?? Rotating Screens Tab
?? Pick List Tab
?? Free Style Tab
?? Effects Superbowl Logo Tab
Control Panel Display Options
The three buttons that appear to the right of the TV monitor icon control the display options. Each is described below.
?? Display – No Overlay – This mode displays only the selected stat screen on the TV monitor.
?? Display - Video Overlay – This mode displays both the video and the selected stat screen on the TV monitor. If video is not present, then the statistics will appear on a black background.
?? No Display - Video Only – This is the default video mode. This mode does not provide an output to the TV monitor. Only the video, if any, will appear on the monitor.
There are two additional buttons on the Control Panel:
?? Load NFL Logo – Displays the NFL Logo in the background on the TV monitor.
?? Clear Display – Clears the current statistics from the screen.
Switching Between the Control Panel and the Activation Panel
Press <F4> to toggle between the Control Panel and the Activation Panel. You must be in the Activation Panel in order to use any GSIS commands or keystrokes.

The Rotating Screens Tab
The Rotating Screens tab lists all of the available full screen stats.

The order in which they appear in the list is the same order in which they will display on the TV monitors starting from the currently selected screen.
A check mark in the check box to the left of each screen name indicates that this screen will appear on the monitors when you click the Start button from either the Full Screen Rotation or Scrolling Screen section of the Control Panel.
The number to the right of the screen name indicates for how long a screen will display before the system displays the next screen.
The key combinations to the right of the time interval are short-cut keys that you can use to display a single screen.
You can rotate or scroll screen, but you can only choose one at a time.
Full Screen Rotation Controls
Use this section of the Control Panel to start and stop screen rotation. This section also displays the amount of time remaining for the screen to display on the monitor.
Scrolling Screen Controls
Use this section of the Control Panel to start and stop screen scrolling.

The Pick List Tab The Pick List tab allows you to display statistics pertaining to a player or a team.

You can indicate the position in which you want the stats to appear on the screen using the Screen Alignment radio buttons.

The Free Style Tab The Free Style tab allows you to enter any text that you want to send to the TV monitors.

You can also create templates that you can use over and over for specific information that you want to display.

The Effects/Superbowl Logo Tab
The Effects/Superbowl Logo tab allows you to select effects for the stats that you send to the TV monitors. These options should be set before you send any stats to the monitors.

The selections that you make on this tab affect the where and how the statistics that you selected from the Pick List and Free Style tabs will appear on the monitors. Set these options before you display any text. These options will be used for all text display until you change them.
This tab also allows you to load the Super Bowl logo and define the location in which it will appear on the monitors.

Displaying Rotating and Scrolling Stats
Select the Rotating Screens tab from the TV Stats screen.

To display rotating stats:
1. Place a check mark in the check box to the left of each stat screen name that you want to display on the TV monitor. You can select one, more than one, or all of the screens.
2. Enter the number of seconds for which you want the screen to display in the field to the right of the screen name. Be aware that this time also includes the amount of time that it takes the system to calculate the statistics and display the screen on the monitor, so we recommend that you set a slightly longer interval than the interval for which you want the screen to display. The timer begins to count down after the screen is displayed.
? If you enter zero for any screen, the system will skip that screen and it will not appear on the TV monitor.
3. You can change the order in which the screens appear using the ? and ? buttons. First, select the screen in the list, then click the appropriate button to move that screen up or down in the list.
4. Click Save when you are done if you want to save your settings for future games.
5. Click Start in the Full Screen Rotation section. The stat screens display on the TV monitors in the order and for the time interval that you selected in steps 1 through 3.

To display scrolling stats:
1. Place a check mark in the check box to the left of each stat screen name that you want to scroll on the TV monitor. You can select one, more than one, or all of the screens.
2. Click Save when you are done if you want to save your settings for future games.
3. You can change the order in which the screens scroll using the ? and ? buttons. First, select the screen in the list, then click the appropriate button to move that screen up or down in the list.
4. Click Start Scrolling Screen in the Scrolling Screen section. The system will scroll each row of the currently selected screen at the bottom of the TV monitor. When it has scrolled all of the lines in that screen, the system moves on to the other screens that you selected from the list.
? The timer is not activated when scrolling.

Select the Pick List tab from the TV Stats screen.

1. Select the stat type from the Team Stats field and double-click the left mouse button or press <Enter>.
The bottom area of the screen is populated with the stat type you selected.
2. Use the <Spacebar> to place checkmarks in the check boxes to the left of the stat or stats that you want to display, and double-click the left mouse button or press <Enter> to send that stat to the TV monitor.
After the stats are sent to the monitors, the list of stats is removed from the bottom area of the screen, and the cursor is moved back to the Team Stats field.

Displaying Free Style Text
Select the Free Style tab from the TV Stats screen.

You can send any text that you want to the TV monitors.
To send free style text:
1. Type the text that you want to send to the monitors in the text area.
2. Click Display. The text that you entered is sent to the TV monitors.
Creating a Template
You can create templates to display milestones that can occur during a game.
For example, let’s say that you want to display the name of a running back that rushes for 100 yards in a game. You can create a template that contains the milestone: “Rushed for 100 yards today.” The line above this information is a placeholder for the player’s name. When a player rushes for 100 yards in a single game, you can call up this template, enter the player’s name, and send it to the TV monitors. The TV monitors will display the player’s name and the milestone that he reached, in this case, “Rushed for 100 yards today.” You do not have to enter the milestone each time.
To create a template:
1. Click New.
2. Type a name for the template in the Title field.
3. Type the information that you want to appear in the template in the text area.
4. Click Save. The template is now saved to the hard drive.

Clearing the Contents of a Template
Use the following procedure to clear the contents of a template without deleting it from the hard drive:
1. Select the template from the Templates list.
2. Click Clear. This clears the current contents from the template, but does not delete the template from the hard drive.
Deleting a Template
To delete a template:
1. Select the template from the Templates list. The template name and its contents appear in the Template area.
2. Click Delete. The template is deleted from the hard drive.

Select the Effects/Superbowl Logo tab from the TV Stats screen.

To apply a special effect:
Make sure that you select the special effect before you display the statistics or else the effect will not appear.
? Special effects apply only to the statistics that you select in the Pick List and Free Style tabs. Selections made in the Rotating Screens tab are not affected.
Select the effect that you want to apply to the statistic. The following effects are available:
?? Fade in
?? Peel from Bottom
?? Peel from Center
?? Peel from Top
?? Slide from Bottom
?? Slide from Left
?? Slide from Right
?? Slide from Top

To display the Superbowl logo:
1. Select Load Super Bowl Logo. The logo is loaded from the hard drive.
2. Enter the values for the X and Y positions in the X Position and Y Position fields. These values will determine the location in which the logo will appear in the screen.
3. Select Display Super Bowl Logo.
? Click Erase Super Bowl Logo if you do not want to display it.
Displaying the NFL Logo
Load the NFL logo before you display any stats.
To load the NFL logo, click Load NFL Logo from the TV Stats Control Panel.
