It took some looking, but TylerHurley finally found where he wanted to be.That place, as it turns out, is the

Montana Western men’s basketballteam, where Hurley is a senior powerforward for the Bulldogs.

Hurley, a 2007 graduate of Anaconda, spent two seasons — one a redshirt — inMissoula at the University of Montanabefore making the difficult decision tomove to the NAIA.

“It was tough to leave Missoula,”Hurley admits. “I wanted to be there, but us making the (NAIA National)tournament the last two years has

helped. I don’t question my decision anymore.”

Hurley said he was taken aback by thelevel of play in the Frontier Conference.

“The Frontier definitely surprisedme,” Hurley said.“There’s not much of adropoff at all. There areDivision I-caliber playersin the Frontier who probably just didn’t get alook. There’s no nightsoff in the Frontier. Techbeat Northern right afterus, and we know we can’tlook past anyone.”

Though Western headcoach Steve Keller recruited Hurley outof high school while he was an assistantcoach at Carroll College, Hurley listedthe main reasons for choosing Dillon astwo friends — Jared Smithson and LayneGlaus.

“Knowing a couple of guys before I

came here made it a lot easier,” Hurleysaid. “They played big in my decision, but I also thought coach Keller would bea great fit.”

Keller, who has been at the helm ofthe Bulldog program for nearly fiveyears, has a reputation as a tough coach.

“Coach Keller is definitely the toughest coach I’ve ever played for, buthe’ll tell you that himself,” Hurley said.“He demands perfection and we try togive it to him every time we go out onthe floor.

“You know, I liked coach Keller rightaway.”

For Keller, the proof of Hurley’s valueshows up in his numbers and results.

“Tyler’s in his third year here, andwe’re in our third 20-win season,” hesaid. “When Tyler Hurley plays wellwe’re pretty much guaranteed to playwell as a team too.”

At 6-foot-5, Hurley has the size toplay a strong game at the No. 4 spot, but

he’s got the finesse and the shot to be adangerous force outside as well.

“Tyler’s a dual threat,” Keller said.“He’s very solid on the block, but he’salso one of our best percentage 3-point

shooters. He’s developed to where he can playin or out.”

Tech coach Aaron Woliczko also compli-mented Hurley, keying on him defensivelyinstead of Western leading scorer BrandonBrown in the teams’ last game in January.

“We want to limit Hurley’s touches againstus,” Woliczko said.

In two and a half years at Western, Hurleyhas averaged almost 11 points per game with ahigh of 27. He has shot 47 percent from thefield and 37 percent from beyond the arc, inaddition to 77 percent of his free throws.Hurley has also pulled down 5.3 rebounds pergame with a high of 13.

As a senior, Hurley said it seemed naturalto step into a leadership role.

“Brandon and I kind of took it upon our-selves last year after the seniors left,” Hurleysaid. “It was just something we needed todo.”

Hurley said he feels very at home with histeammates.

“This team is probably the closest one I’veever been on,” Hurley said. “We never have problems in practice and that’s really nice.Winning makes it easier, but we’re all doing

stuff together outside of basketball too.”Hurley describes his team as “a hard-

working crew,” and he also gave a nod to theunderclassmen on the team.

“The younger guys challenge us every dayin practice,” he said. “We’ve got a good youngnucleus. (Jake) Owsley and (Tyler) Miller aresophomores who will be returning starters, soI think the team’s in good shape to keep thisrun going.”

Though he’s made the transition fromMissoula to Dillon, Hurley still keeps onestrong tie to the Grizzly program. His sisterAli Hurley is a junior with the Lady Griz bas-ketball team.

“We talk just about every day,” TylerHurley said.

And he’s got a good contingent of fans andfamily who make the trek from the SmelterCity to Dillon to see the former Copperheadin action. Just last week, Anaconda headboys’ basketball coach Jason Buell hauled theentire team to Straugh Gymnasium to watch aWestern game, featuring an outstandingAnaconda alumnus.

Hurley, who is studying secondary education, said he’s come around to like theblock system where students concentrate ona single subject at a time.

They’re miles apart, but oh-so-close together.Montana Tech and Montana Western are on opposite ends of

the Frontier Conference men’s basketball standings. The Bulldogsare atop the pile with an 8-3 league mark, while Tech brings up the rear with a 3-8 mark.

That’s one statistic both coaches throw out the window inpreparation for the teams’ latest meeting, slated for 7:30 p.m.Friday at Straugh Gymnasium in Dillon.

“The standings don’t mean anything,” Western head coach Steve Kellersaid Wednesday afternoon. “We’ve seen that anybody can beat anybody inthe Frontier.”

The last time they met on Jan. 21 in Butte, Western opened a 30-17 lead onlyto see the Orediggers come back and pull within two points in the final secondsbefore the final 65-61 Western advantage.

“Tech might be the best coached team in our league,” Keller said. “They compete with everybody. They just knocked off Northern, and any team that can beat Westminster three out of four times has to be doing something right.”

Last time the teams met, Tech head coach Aaron Woliczko said his squadkeyed defensively on Tyler Hurley instead of standout point guardBrandon Brown.

“We’re looking for ‘Allen Iverson numbers’ from Brandon Brown,”Woliczko said. “We want a lot of attempts for the points he scores. But they have other role players who stepped up against us, and we need tofind a way to stop them, too.”

The Bulldogs got a huge weekend from 6-foot-4 senior KyleErickson, who earned national NAIA player of the week honorsafter scoring 63 points in Western’s wins over MSU-Northern andthe University of Great Falls.

Against Northern, Erickson scored a career-high 32 points, had10 rebounds, seven assists, and a steal. He was 10 for 11 from thefield, made his only 3-point attempt and went 11 of 12 from thefree throw line. Against Great Falls, Erickson had 31 points, 14rebounds, two assists, and three steals. He was 10 for 16 from thefield, 7 of 9 from 3-point range and 4 of 6 from the free throw line.

Tech is coming off a pair of non-conference losses to Division I Utah Valley andUtah State, games that came on the heels of a Friday night loss to Great Falls

and a Saturday win over Northern.“I’m happy with how the guys came together after the team meeting we

had after the Great Falls game,” Woliczko said, noting the stinging 70-41 loss suffered at the hands of the Argos. “We did a much

better job playing together against Northern. We played with trust in eachother, and that carried over when we got on the bus to Utah.”

The Orediggers lost to the two Division I teams, but played wellenough in both games to draw praise from Woliczko.

“Daniel Simon has really come on in the last half of conferenceplay,” Woliczko said. “He’s been a lot more comfortable in the stylewe’ve been playing lately and he’s finding his role. Tyree (Haynie)has been playing well and (Adam) Greger has teams trying to

Third meeting the charm for womenThe Bulldogs and Orediggers

women’s basketball teams have a littlescore to settle.

In the preseason run, MontanaWestern posted a 63-40 win over ayoung and developing Montana Techteam. In the first go-round of theFrontier slate, however, Tech posted abig 84-71 win over the Bulldogs.

Something’s got to give, and bothteams are banking on it being the other.

Neither team is in the FrontierConference group sitting above .500, asTech is 4-7 and Western is 3-8. Both arecoming off losses to teams the otherdefeated last weekend.

After Montana Tech used a strongovertime performance to defeat theUniversity of Great Falls 68-65 onFriday, the last-place Argos (2-8) wentto Dillon and posted a 79-74 win overthe Bulldogs on Saturday.

Similarly, after Western registered a80-72 victory over MSU-Northern (5-5)Friday, the Skylights came in to Butteand nipped the Orediggers 42-41.

The Orediggers saw a nice weekendperformance from center Kelsey DeWit,who came up big in the win over GreatFalls with 14 points, 10 rebounds andnine blocks, and again Saturday with 10points in the loss to Northern.

“She played as hard as she could, andthat’s what we’ve been working on,”Tech coach Kerie DePell said. “Thatshows what her potential is.”

Danni Devenny and BrianneMcClafferty put up nice numbers onFriday, while senior point guard TabbyTomlinson did the same Saturday.

Freshman MandyMachinal leads theOrediggers in scoringwith an average ofmore than 14 pointsper game, whileDeWit is the reboundleader with nearlyseven per game, andalso has the mostblocks. Tomlinsonpaces her team inassists and steals.

Western enjoyed a27-point output fromSammi Bignell inFriday’s win overNorthern, whileteammate HayleyPettit contributed 21points and 11rebounds from thepost.

“I thought our girls did a really goodjob bouncing back from the last coupleweeks,” Western head coach CaraCocchiarella said.

Pettit, a 6-foot-3 post out of Dillon, leads the Bulldogs in scoring (17 pointsper game), rebounds (12.17 per game),steals (1.6 per game) and blocks, whileAlecia Wilson dishes 4.6 assists pergame.

“The Frontier Conference championship is some-thing we’d definitely like to get back to,” Hurley said.“But our goal from day one has been to advance to thenational tournament. Last year we almost beat the No. 1team, and Rocky Mountain won it a few years back.

“All you’ve got to do is get there, and anything canhappen.”
