Life is full of uncertainty.

Accidents, illnesses, or emergencies can send even the strongest of us to seek help and support. Sometimes we, or the people we love, will face medical challenges that seem insurmountable.

Sometimes those challenges can leave us feeling powerless, but our St. Boniface Hospital Foundation donors have changed all that. You continue to give us strength and hope.

It’s only when we come together selflessly as a community that we empower each other to feel better and to heal. You’ve made it possible for St. Boniface to continue serving Manitobans who face critical and complex conditions, with a renowned spirit of compassionate care and courageous innovation.

As we step back and review your activities in 2019, we at the Foundation are humbled by the thousands of people who participated in our special events, championed our causes and contributed financially.

You’ve made sure that St. Boniface Hospital continues to provide the best patient care possible, while continuing to seek breakthroughs in medical research.

Our Annual Report is where we reflect on the achievements you have made over the past 12 months and identify the challenges that lie ahead. This Report is also an important opportunity to acknowledge the immense contribution made by our staff and volunteers. Their dedication to our vision and values is demonstrated on a daily basis, during what continues to be a period of significant change.

The Foundation and the Hospital are deeply appreciative to you, our donors and trusted supporters, for your partnership and your help last year. With your ongoing support, we can continue to meet the needs of St. Boniface Hospital, our patients and our community.

You are the game-changers.

We thank you for your support in 2019.

As anyone who has ever had a bad cut knows, bleeding happens quickly.

When a high-acuity patient needs a life-saving blood transfusion in St. Boniface Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), Labour and Delivery Unit or Cardiac Care Unit, getting blood products into the room quickly is critical. Transfusion prevents the patient from bleeding out before the source of the bleeding is stopped.

It’s a race against time. But that’s about to change, thanks to the generosity of St. Boniface Hospital Foundation donors — manufacturer Carte International Inc. of Winnipeg, philanthropists David and Elena Forgan of Mississauga, and other donors who stepped forward to help improve blood transfusion practices and standards for patient care at the Hospital.

Right now, blood products must be moved from the Hospital’s blood bank to where they’re needed, explains Dr. Jeffrey Klassen, FRCPC-EM, Emergency Room Physician, St. Boniface Hospital.

“I would say we are extremely lucky to receive emergency blood inside of 15 to 20 minutes, and that is when everything is running smoothly,” he says. “I know 15 minutes may not sound like a long time, but to a critically ill patient it can mean life or death.”

“Based on my experience it takes a significant time for phone calls to be made, blood bank staff to retrieve and prepare the blood, and Hospital staff to go retrieve the blood for us,” explains KIassen.

Having three specialized blood fridges in the Hospital will make St. Boniface the first facility in Manitoba to have this life-saving equipment. “The fridge in the ED will eliminate many time-consuming steps in the process of administering emergency blood to critically ill patients,” says Klassen. Blood will be stored safely, properly and most importantly, where it’s needed most urgently.

Health care providers like Klassen will be able to focus more on their patients and not blood product delivery. “These fridges will provide for immediate delivery of both Emergency Universal Blood and limited supplies of Matched Blood,” he says. “The fastest way to get blood right now is to call for emergency blood, which is the type of blood we will stock in this fridge.”

“In the ED, this blood fridge will allow us to care for patients that are critically ill from blood loss in a much more efficient way. It will help us avoid further deterioration in these patients. Put another way, this fridge will help us save lives, and for that, we are tremendously grateful.”

RACING AGAINST TIME

“This will help us save lives, and for that, we are tremendously grateful.”

– Dr. Jeffrey Klassen, FRCPC-EM, Emergency Room Physician, St. Boniface Hospital.

When every second counts, 20 minutes is

too long

Vivian and Burle Silverman shared a bond that some would say you only read about in storybooks.

Although their journey together was cut short, their love ultimately created a lasting legacy of hope for other Manitobans.

Vivian and Burle first found each other side-by-side in their cubicles working at Revenue Canada. “We were yin and yang. We complemented each other,” said Burle.

Vivian’s family had a long history of cancer. Vivian’s mother and five great-aunts had all died from it. Her mother passed away in January 2000 in St. Boniface Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. Vivian always believed it wasn’t a matter of “if ” she got cancer, but “when”.

Unfortunately, she was right. In January 2013, Vivian was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, less than a year after she and Burle had retired. After an unsuccessful round of chemotherapy, Vivian underwent surgery to remove the tumor.

Sadly Vivian and Burle’s time together came to an end in 2015, when she was only 58. The couple cherished their 24 years together. “It was always just the two of us, so it was a big adjustment,” said Burle. “My wife was a gorgeous woman. She really was.”

Before she died, Vivian and Burle had decided to give back to St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, to support Palliative Care. Vivian is now memorialized on a wall in the Palliative Care Unit, right beside her mother.

Burle explained the importance of giving back to the Palliative Care Unit: “The work they do there is so unbelievable. It’s important that they get our support.” Thinking of the staff, Burle took a poignant pause and said, “They’re angels.”

Burle loves talking about Vivian. Expressing the importance of supporting the Hospital, he shared his hope that Vivian’s life story might inspire others to give back also.

A LEGACY OF LOVESilverman Family endowment offers enduring support for Palliative Care

Burle and Vivian Silverman enjoyed every moment they shared.

In 2012, the New Frontiers Research Campaign launched in celebration of the 25th anniversary of St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre with an ambitious goal to secure $25 million for basic and applied medical research.

Last year, the campaign successfully wrapped up, thanks to hundreds of generous donors. Their gifts are helping researchers at St. Boniface Hospital forge ahead towards breakthroughs that will enhance quality of life, improve patient outcomes, save lives, and transform our ability to overcome today’s most debilitating diseases and conditions.

We thank the passionate donors whose support is making an impact!

17 ST. BONIFACE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Robert Allan is the definition of a grateful patient.

In November 2018, the Winnipeg man underwent emergency quadruple-bypass surgery at St. Boniface Hospital. He remembers some but not all the details of his lengthy recovery in the Hospital’s I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute.

“I was in dreamland; the hospital staff brought me back to reality. I had to learn how to walk again.”

Robert’s words came slowly but deliberately – aphasia, from a stroke in 2008, impaired his speech. Ever by his side, Robert’s wife Anne recalls their gratitude for the doctors, nurses, therapists, aides, and everyone who attended to him.

“I think they pulled him out of the grave,” said Anne. “There was no guarantee he would make it. They did a very good job.”

Some months after Robert’s discharge from the hospital, a handwritten thank-you note arrived at St. Boniface Hospital Foundation:

"Thanks to the skill of the entire operating team room, surgery proved to be a success. I cannot thank the entire staff of the fifth floor ICU at the Asper Centre, as well as the fourth floor, enough. Their care and concern were exceptional."

In August 2019, the Allans came back for a warm visit with more than

a dozen Hospital staff who looked after Robert during his recovery. For those who attended, the lunch hour reception was a rare opportunity to catch up with a patient no longer in their care. For the Allans, it was a chance to say thank you in person.

“We never gave up hope through any complications or setbacks,” Anne shared with a group including visiting cardiac surgery residents from across Canada. "The doctors, the nurses – everyone – gave us confidence.”

The Allans felt such gratitude for the care they received they gladly took part in the Foundation’s Radiothon of Hope and Healing. As on-air guests, they shared their story with 680 CJOB, [email protected], and Power 97 listeners. Joining them were two of Robert’s caregivers, Lisa Bowen, Program Team Manager for the Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Unit and Leah Gilmour-Humbert, Cardiac Resource Nurse in the unit.

“I do remember Mr. Allan,” said Gilmour-Humbert during the segment. “He has come such a long way. We have a great team and we’re all here to help patients through their difficult times.”

As that handwritten note expressed, Robert Allan vowed to make the most of his renewed health.

"I'm on the road to a full recovery...and I'm determined all their efforts will not be in vain."

A LIFE RENEWEDDonors make it possible for patients like Robert Allan to have a new lease on life. With generous donor support, in the last year alone, the Cardiac Sciences Program has purchased: • A cutting-edge portable

echocardiogram machine, which will allow doctors to quickly analyze the function of a patient’s heart through images in real time.

• Ultrasound probes and mobile electrocardiogram devices to treat arrhythmia patients – equipment that will reduce procedure times, decrease pain, and lessen complications for cardiac patients.

• A myocardial perfusion imaging ergometer, which shows the distribution of blood flow in the heart’s muscular tissue and helps identify areas of reduced blood flow associated with damage.

23 ST. BONIFACE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Our Manitoban community has a strong spirit. That spirit is the backbone behind the generosity of hundreds of Safeway employees who support St. Boniface Hospital’s Women and Child Program.

“From the very beginning, Safeway employees have taken a family-based approach to what we do. This means we take care of each other, our customers, and our communities,” explained Laura Brown, Safeway Manager, Community Investment. The Safeway Employee Payroll Donation campaign chose St. Boniface Hospital as their 2018 recipient. A generous $26,541 contribution enabled the purchase of an electric fetal monitor for Labour and Delivery and a state-of-the-art refrigerator for the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The addition of the electric fetal monitor will help to ensure the safe delivery of more than 5,600 babies annually at St. Boniface Hospital. The new monitor, which will bolster the Program’s

inventory, gives care teams the information they need to make decisions about when to intervene and in some cases, deliver babies more urgently, sometimes by caesarean section.

The purchase of the refrigerator will help the NICU team to prepare and preserve the nutritional items babies in the NICU need to get strong and healthy. It will also ultimately help shorten a child’s stay at the Hospital, giving them every fighting chance to go home and enjoy life with their family.

Brown further explained, “There is no better representation of our collective support for the communities we serve than our Safeway Employee Payroll Donation program. We are proud to support the amazing work being done in the NICU at St. Boniface Hospital and the dedicated staff that provide incredible care to our youngest and most vulnerable citizens.”

We thank Safeway and its employees for supporting the health of women and children in Manitoba.

The Batters family brought their premature-born twins home healthy last fall after a lengthy stay, thanks to the generous support of donors like the Safeway

St. Boniface Hospital Foundation’s 2019 event lineup showcased some of our classic events and introduced Rosé Soirée in support of cardiac care. With the unwavering support of our fellow Manitobans, we raised much-needed funds to support cardiac care and cardiovascular research at St. Boniface Hospital.

The Cardiac Classic, taking place at Niakwa Country Club, has raised an outstanding $445,000 in support of cardiac care to date. It’s no wonder players describe the event as “the best golf tournament in Winnipeg”. To get more information about the event or to register call the Foundation at 204-237-2067.

In November, Global News Winnipeg, CJOB 680, [email protected] and Power 97 all took part in our Radiothon of Hope and Healing presented by Vickar Automotive Group. Over $150,000 was raised in one exciting day! The Radiothon of Hope and Healing has been a powerful platform for sharing Hospital stories for the past 18 years. Throughout the day, we heard from past patients, current donors, Hospital staff, and volunteers as they shared their personal stories about life-saving procedures, compassionate care, and the impact donors have on excellence in patient care and research at St. Boniface Hospital.

The new event in town, Rosé Soirée, was a pink-themed sensational spin on a cocktail hour where guests enjoyed the sunset through the St. Boniface Cathedral ruins. The first-time event raised over $30,000 to help fund a new state-of-the-art echocardiogram for the Cardiac Sciences Program. This year, we put a new spin on last year’s event. On May 28, 2020, Rosé Soirée presented: Rosé SoirIN, held at the most exclusive venue in town…your home.

Our success at these events is made possible by the generous support of our sponsors and guests. You make so much possible and we couldn’t do what we do without you.

25 ST. BONIFACE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

The Youth BIOlab Jeunesse was able to extend its reach in 2019 and help improve science literacy for kids, especially those in Indigenous communities, across Manitoba.

The student program, located in St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre, received significant gifts from the Manitoba Metis Federation, Manitoba Metis Heritage Fund, and the Canada Post Community Foundation, among others.

The Youth BIOlab program connects science, research, and medicine at the Hospital to science curriculum and classroom learning through authentic, hands-on experiences for students in grades 4 to 12. The laboratory and classroom space was built with support from RBC Foundation and opened its doors to students in spring 2013.

Ensuring its program activities are available to all, including those in rural and northern First Nations communities, is a primary goal for the Youth BIOlab.

In the spring, a generous anonymous donor funded a partnership with Cross Lake Education Authority, which oversees all education aspects for the remote community, for the next three years. In the fall, the RBC Youth BIOlab classroom and lab hosted dozens of grade 9 students visiting from Cross Lake.

“The hope is we continue to see these students year after year, and they look to us to help them continue exploring their love for science,” says Youth BIOlab Director, Steve Jones.

With this donation, the Youth BIOlab will be able to hire additional teaching staff to create programs and travel to northern communities to develop relationships with Indigenous students and teachers.

Donor generosity continued into the summer. In August, the Manitoba Metis Federation matched a Manitoba Metis Heritage Fund donation of $75,000, bringing the total donation to $150,000.

“This investment [helps] support our efforts to nurture Métis youth in Manitoba to explore health and learning in ways that are meaningful to them, their experiences, and their backgrounds,” said Jones.

New technology enables the Youth BIOlab to take science education to the next level. In September, the Canada Post Community Foundation donated $15,000 to purchase a portable digital microscope, computer, and projector that can be transported to schools for sessions and student mentoring.

“The new equipment allows us to show kids a lot of the work we do under the microscope,” said Jones. “It’s modern and really attractive for kids — making science easier to understand.”

Staff can project images from microscope slides on to a large screen that can be viewed by everyone simultaneously, replicating the experience of working in the RBC Youth BIOlab.

Thank you to our generous donors for supporting youth science education and research in Manitoba. You’ve made a difference in the lives of students across the province.

FUNDING THE FUTURE

In 2019, the Youth BIOlab Jeunesse received several generous gifts bringing science education to many students across Manitoba.
