Certainly Mitch Bintliff, formerpoker manager at 4 Bears Casino &Lodge, New Town, N.D., realized thatsimply opening a poker room was notenough. The casino needed to find a wayto effectively manage its poker operation.

Challenge No. 1? Finding an afford-able software system that offered all ofthe high-end management functionalitythat the casino needed. Enter PokerTable

Flip on the TV and you’ll see poker tour-naments on ESPN, Fox Sports, the TravelChannel, Bravo and the Game ShowNetwork. Poker, in fact, has become apopular recreational pursuit, with about11 percent of Americans reporting thatthey enjoy playing Omaha Hi-Lo Split,Texas Hold ‘Em, Five Card Draw―orone of the game’s many other variations.

The surge in poker popularity in recentyears is good news for casino owners. Somemight even call it a stroke of good luck.

Multimedia Games’ TournEventTakes Slot Tournaments To The Next Level Multimedia Games’ revolutionaryTournEvent™ slot tournament system, the easiest-to-use-system of its kind inthe market today, provides a number ofquantifiable benefits for slot floor man-agers and is changing the way casinooperators utilize slot tournaments tomaximize their promotional programs.

TournEvent is the first server-basedgaming system that clearly demonstratessignificant operational enhancements for

slot managers while simultaneously pro-viding the tournament player with a higher level of entertainment. It allows aslot floor manager to create a slot tourna-ment at the push of a button without theneed to conduct time-consuming chipchanges or machine moves.

Once the floor manager triggers atournament through the use ofTournEvent’s control center, theexcitement begins. The system puts

dynamic overhead signs into action, displaying real-time leader boards andcountdown clocks as well as tourna-ment results at the conclusion of play.In addition, using a camera embeddedin the game cabinet—MultimediaGames’ newest addition toTournEvent—the system can also dis-play live streaming video of tourna-ment winners on the overhead display.

The tournament experience isheightened through a wide variety ofother visual and audio effects.Multimedia Games’ cabinets feature thelatest in sound technology and the dualLCD screens also display leader boardinformation, countdown clocks duringplay and celebratory graphical elements

at the conclusion of the tournament. The secret to TournEvent’s success

is its robust back office system thatprovides floor managers with a host offeatures and benefits: automatedenrollment quickly gets players in theaction; real-time tracking allows con-stant event monitoring; and a push-of-a-button operation enables efficient useof slot floor space. All of these featuresare housed in a self-contained, easy-to-use control center conveniently locatedat the end of the slot bank.

With all of TournEvent’s features,it is clearly the future for slot tour-nament management.

OnStage Casinos will prove to be one ofthe hottest and most sought-afterresources for talent buyers in the Casinomarket. It may sound like a stout state-ment, but it will live up to the hype. Here’s why:

OnStage Media Group’s publica-tions are all in ad format. Unlike a listingdirectory, it gives entertainers a greaterarea to paint a picture. What’s more, it is

a publication filled with nothing butentertainment; no articles, no editorials. It is a super-saturated source for enter-tainment. OnStage Media Group hassuccessfully produced these types ofbooking guides in other entertainmentmarkets for more than six years! Theyknow it works. They have seen first-hand how effective this tool is for bothproducers and buyers. There is no

wading through magazines to find infor-mation for a certain act and no blind callsto ambiguous contacts in a listing. It issimply visual entertainment.

Here’s another reason: It is being dis-tributed to more than 25,000 decisionmakers and talent buyers, including theCEOs of more than 900 casinos world-wide that operate showrooms andlounges. Three of these avenues for distri-bution include The NIGA 2010, theSouthern Gaming Summit in May of2010 and the G2E Asia 2010. These tradeshows and conventions combined withthe direct mailing to more than 5,000 inthe gaming industry contribute to themassive number in distribution. This pub-lication is going to be seen everywhere!

Lastly, it is going to be a resource

with a life span that will live past thetrade show floor. OnStage Casinos willsoon also feature an online edition with aquarterly e-zine. The online edition hasfar more offerings than the print edition. It features Flip Page technology, crossreferencing, entertainment type cate-gories, search features, bio and photopages for each entertainer, a promotionalvideo media gallery showcase, live e-mail and Web links taking you directlyto the entertainer or booking agent’s Webpresence. Best of all, more entertainmentwill be added each month, so if you can’tfind what you’re looking for this month, check back! Be Environmentally Minded:Pechanga Is Working TodayFor A ‘Greener’ TomorrowCourtesy of Pechanga

Pechanga has always been mindful of ourenvironment. As good citizens, we allwant to do our part to protect our fragileenvironment. Clean air and clean waterare important to us. Many businesses arecommitted to reducing pollution and contamination of our resources throughthe recycling of used materials, safe handling of hazardous wastes and appli-cation of best management practices.

Pechanga has taken a more aggressive approach to preserving ourresources. Pechanga invested in an alternative energy creation system:Pechanga’s Cogeneration (CoGen) plant,

which relies on a turbine that generateselectricity using natural gas, a cleansource of power. It runs continuously, producing power 24 hours a day, sevendays a week. And unlike traditional energycreation systems, the CoGen plant pro-duces energy more efficiently. Instead ofreleasing the heat created as a naturalbyproduct of the process into the envi-ronment, the CoGen system recycles thatheat and uses it to power PechangaResort and Casino’s kitchens, domestichot water heating, comfort heating andair conditioning.

The CoGen system has the capacityto produce up to four megawatts ofpower. When the turbine is operating

with PRC’s standby generators,Pechanga can essentially operate inisland mode, which means we can pro-duce 100 percent of the power to meetthe resort’s needs during the eveningsand all day during the winter months. The system also allows Pechanga toreduce its emissions output—a signifi-cant environmental benefit that is sofar unrivaled in the community.

The Pechanga Resort and Casinohas established a dedicated group ofteam members called the “GreenTeam.” Since the summer of 2008, theteam has undertaken several responsi-bilities to identify waste management, pollution prevention and conservationmeasures to be taken at Pechanga. Theteam has installed recycling containersacross the property and ensures largecardboard bins, plastic and other itemsare recycled. The team develops alter-natives to minimize waste or redirectoperating processes that result in

economic and environmental savings.Pechanga also has an Ambient AirQuality Monitoring Station(PAAQMS). The PAAQMS collectsdata for ozone (O3), nitrogen oxides(NOx), particulate matter less than 2.5micrometers in diameter (PM 2.5) andmeteorological data. The PAAQMSprovides data used to help determinethe quality of air on a daily and hourlybasis for the tribe. This data is alsoused to provide the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency withevidence that the quality of air atPechanga does not exceed nationalstandards set for criteria pollutants, such as ozone, nitrogen oxides andparticulate matter.

Creating a healthier, safer and envi-ronmentally conscious work environ-ment is a way of life at Pechanga, for ourtribal members, our guests and our teammembers. Pechanga is working today fora greener tomorrow.

Profitable Golf Facilities,Native North AmericansAnd The EnvironmentNative North Americans have always hada deep respect for Mother Earth and anunderstanding of how to use her giftswisely. Today that philosophy is called“sustainable environmentalism.” Themost common definition is: “Meeting theneeds of the present without compromis-ing the ability of future generations tomeet their own needs.”

The very best environmental golfcourses are specifically planned, builtand maintained to be sustainable. Thisrequires a detailed study of the possiblegolf course site to understand and docu-ment all of its resources and its microcli-mate, and only then can the golf coursebe planned to protect the most sensitiveareas, avoid areas of high value and min-imally impact all other areas.

Once a routing plan is developed

that represents the best compromise ofthese considerations, then comes the testing of soil and water quality to selectthe best adapted grasses and landscapes, the best root zone modification materialsand the best technology to save labor, energy, water and maintenance.Intelligently applying this concept to golfcourses can make them not only healthierenvironments that use less water, fertilizer, pesticides and fossil fuels, but can also make them more profitableand entertaining.

Many golf courses, especiallyolder ones, were designed and builtwithout this attention to the environ-ment or without the benefit of newtechnology. Sometimes these coursescan be easily retrofitted, while othercourses may require some reconstruction.

Hurdzan/ Fry takes the same deliberateapproach to studying and developingimprovement plans as it does for newones, just as it did for the MarriottCorporations’ golf course atCamelback in Scottsdale.

No golf course design firm is betterequipped to apply this method thanHurdzan/Fry Environmental Golf CourseDesign. The company’s staff was educatedin ecotoxicological, environmental andturfgrass studies, to include two Ph.D.sand several Master’s degrees, as well ashaving designed more than 350 golfcourses over a 50-year span. “We mod-estly claim to be the environmental lead-ers in golf and we can back up ourclaims,” the company stated.

Looking at the bigger picture, per-haps the most overlooked and under-utilized profit center in golf is the golflearning center or golf academy. Golf is ahealthful, outdoor, family-oriented, non-discriminating game that can also opendoors to opportunity. Golf is a great prod-uct, but it can be hard to sell because it isnot easy to learn, golf courses can be

intimidating to beginners and peoplefalsely believe it must be expensive.None of those things about golf have tobe true if one has access to a proper golflearning center.

A learning center is not just a driv-ing range and practice green, but ratherit includes an instructional classroomwith video equipment, golf learningaids, a professionally developed andadministered teaching curriculum, ashort game center and even practiceholes where beginners can learn theetiquette, rules, customs and expecta-tions for playing on a course. This islike a “bunny slope” for golf. Guestsoften visit a golf academy for a three-to five-day school that is a half-day forgolf and a half-day for other funthings, like gaming. Having lessons forschool children or senior citizens canbe scheduled, as well as friendly community competitions.

“We at Hurdzan/Fry EnvironmentalGolf Design hope you enjoy the show

Right from thebeginning, our Tribal Elders demandedour staff to focus on customer service.Give people what they want withoutthem asking for it with a smile on yourface and you have a customer for life!We have the best customers andemployees any business could ask for!We strive to always look for new andinnovative ways to go beyond traditional offerings and programs.

GN: What was the most significant eventor series of events affecting the SycuanBand in the past year?

Sycuan (Con’t. from p. 1) DT: 2009 was a year of adjustment for ourtribe and affiliated business entities as weweathered the global recession. Throughclear direction by the Tribal Council andsound management by our professionalstaff, we trimmed non-essential servicesand focused more on employee training, thereby reducing to the lowest possiblelevel layoffs at our businesses. This efforthas positioned us well for 2010.

GN: What do you anticipate to be yourgreatest challenge in the year ahead?

DT: The greatest challenge we face in2010 would have to be the continued readjustment due to the economic down-turn. Over 3,000 employees between our

tribal government operations, casino, resort and other properties, and theirextended families depend on the TribalCouncil to make wise and effective decisions. As we come out of this reces-sion, we look to continue putting our customers and employees first.

players as well as utilize the system totrack hours for poker tournamententries,” Bintliff said. “Best of all, thesystem does things that we have not seenin other systems at twice the price.”

The system is easy for players andmanagers to use. To start, players simplyswipe their club card and choose thegame they want to play on the easy-to-navigate touch screen kiosk. They areinstantly moved to a live game list―andimmediately notified when a spotbecomes available. Players also use thetouch screen kiosk to check rewardspoints and receive comps.

At the same time, casino managersuse the system to cost-effectively manageplayer waiting lists, seating, player pro-motions and player comps and rewards.Because the system is so easy touse―and can be customized to meet theunique needs of individual poker

rooms―casinos start realizing resultsright out of the box.

“So, instead of just opening up morepoker rooms, casinos can truly takeadvantage of this surge in popularity byoperating poker rooms that are marketedto players effectively and that run cost-efficiently. In the final analysis, casinoowners will realize that, while luck mightplay a part, the true key to a successful, profitable poker room is good manage-ment. Fortunately, we make it easy forsmall- and mid-sized casinos to affordand implement the sophisticated technol-ogy that can save time and money whileincreasing revenues,” said Judith Katz,CEO of CMI Gaming.

KK: Actually, there are three properties:Tulalip Resort Casino & Spa, Quil CedaCreek Casino and Tulalip Bingo. All areowned and operated by the Tulalip Tribes, located on I-5 about 30 miles north ofSeattle and 90 miles south of VancouverB.C. The resort is a four-diamond propertyof 370 rooms and over 200,000 squarefeet of gaming. In addition, Tulalip hasdeveloped part of a master plan, includingan outlet shopping center and a merchantcenter with major retail stores.

GN: Has Tulalip continued to enjoy growtheven in the current down economy?

KK: Tulalip has sustained positive financialsuccess even in the face of the current reces-sion. Much of that success can be attributed

to the Tulalip Tribes commitment to carefulexpansion of master plan elements andaggressive marketing. The opening of theresort in August 2008, with its 30,000square feet of meeting facilities and expand-ed restaurants, was a major step forward.

GN: What are some of the design factorsthat make Tulalip Resort Casino unique?

KK: The blending of native cultural elements through nearly two million dollars’ worth of Tulalip art with a con-temporary architectural style gives the property a unique personality that guestsexperience, remember and recommend.

GN: Define your marketing strategy thathas sustained Tulalip’s substantial growth.

KK: Our marketing strategy is based

Tulalip Gaming Organization (Con’t. from p. 1) upon a creative position of emphasizingthe combined differences of TulalipCasino and Tulalip Resort and backingup the promise of exceptional service, resort amenities and a casino RewardsClub that gives players the most cash-back of any casino in our area. It com-bines the major elements of gaming funwith the luxury of a four-diamond resortand spa to project an image of TheNorthwest’s Finest Resort Casino.

GN: What is your outlook for theremainder of 2010 and into 2011?

KK: I believe the hospitality and gamingmarket segments will continue a slowrecovery this year, with more positivegrowth in 2011. While the rest of theindustry slowly recovers, Tulalip shouldcontinue to enjoy successful financial

Swinerton Incorporated. SwinertonBuilders is currently one of the top fivelargest gaming and hospitality builders inthe United States.

GN: So how did Swinerton Builders get involved in the Native Americangaming industry?

JH: That is a fun story to share. Back inthe late ’80s, we began working with theRumsey Band of Wintun Indians, locatedin Brooks, California, on their CacheCreek Indian Bingo facility, which was avery small facility at the time. Webecame a trusted adviser to the tribe andbuilt a small gaming facility into a largegaming facility. We completed the over$200-million Cache Creek CasinoResort, an absolutely spectacular resortfacility complete with a championship18-hole golf course.

From this initial gaming enterprise, wewere able to move forward and providedmanagement services for theMashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation at

Foxwood Resort Casino.

We have recently completed or are cur-rently under construction on the SanPasqual Valley View Casino, the PalaCasino, the Dry Creek Band of PomoIndians, Riverock Casino, JacksonRancheria and the Concow MaiduFeather Falls Casino. Plus, there are sev-eral more similar projects throughout theWestern United States.

GN: To what do you attribute your com-pany’s continued success in the NativeAmerican gaming market?

JH: Our success can be attributed to ourdedication and commitment to ourclients, with a prime example being theCache Creek project.

Our estimating services and cost-controlmeasures are matched by no one and weprovide credible estimates in a timelymanner that hold up throughout the lifeof the project. We maintain a verydetailed cost-control and reporting sys-tem that shows our clients where theirmonies are being spent and that they are

Swinerton Builders (Con’t. from p. 1) being spent wisely. Our unique schedul-ing system enables us to schedule a proj-ect so you can obtain the earliest accessto the gaming facilities to generate themaximum revenue.

We provide the maximum opportunityfor tribal involvement on the construc-tion project through subcontracting, materials supply and direct labor hire. And by understanding the state sales taxexemption program, we are able to workwith our clients to figure out the best con-tracting method to eliminate any kind ofstate sales tax requirements.

GN: Swinerton has three ongoing or just-completed projects in the San Diego area, all at different casinos. Can you tell usmore about these projects?

JH: We just completed a 20-month expan-sion and renovation at the Pala Casino SpaResort which was honored with an Awardof Merit from the AGC. Just a taste ofwhat the scope of work included wasseven new restaurants, 10 new supportkitchens and a new poker room. To suc-cessfully get all the work completed in a

casino with ongoing operations 24/7 ourProject Team utilized innovative tech-nology such as BIM to enhance collabora-tion and maintain schedule.

We also just built the new ground-upFour Diamond Hotel for Valley ViewCasino, a beautiful new addition to theresort. In addition, our Solar Group iscurrently working at Harrah’s RinconCasino on the design and install of a1,102 kWp solar system that is a ground-mount, single-axis tracker system. Whatis unique is that all these gaming projectsare so different, yet Swinerton is gettingthe job done, and done well on all three.

GN: Do you have any final thoughts forour readers?

JH: I’d like to take this opportunity tothank our clients. We really enjoy workingwithin the Native American gaming indus-try and have established great relationships.Every job has been fun and rewarding!

GN: Does Tulalip have any expansionplans for the future?

KK: As I mentioned, there is an overallmaster plan for development. The TulalipHibulb Cultural Center and Museum iscurrently under construction and willopen later this year. Some of the otheritems discussed for development includefuture expansion of the resort, additionalrestaurants, added retail space and otherentertainment offerings. The key is mar-ket timing. for casino floors and gaming facilities. The modular quick-connect FreeAxezplatform accommodates the hundreds ofwires and cables needed for slotmachines, poker rooms, electronic tablegames, ATMs, surveillance equipment, electronic displays, etc. Cable channelsare accessed in seconds instead of hoursto add or change cabling and equipment. No more headaches with power poles orconcrete trenches!

GN: What distinguishes FreeAxez fromother access floors?

JM: Traditional raised floors have heavy2-foot by 2-foot panels that screw intofour posts at the corners. The posts[sometimes called pedestals] are glued tothe concrete, with supporting understruc-ture attached to the walls. These systemsrequire special tooling and are difficult towork when changes are needed to wiresand cables around.

FreeAxez is an all-steel low-profileaccess flooring system that snaps togetherquickly without any glues, screws or

fasteners. No tools are required so cablescan be added or changes can be made ina fraction of the time! New machines areinstalled and wired quickly. FreeAxezcan also save in machine maintenance.

GN: How does FreeAxez compare to tra-ditional cable systems like concretetrenches and deck systems?

JM: Historically, casinos have reliedon covered trenches in concrete to runtheir wires. Trenches are fixed inplace, and do not adapt well forchanges or adding machines into newareas of the gaming floor.

FreeAxez can be an improved solution, for flexibility and efficiency―cablechannels are available every 15 inchesin both directions. As gaming equip-ment and surveillance systems areupgraded, simply remove the floor tileand lift the channel plates; new wiresare installed in seconds instead of hoursof cutting new concrete pathways!FreeAxez delivers a high-capacityorganized wire management.

GN: Is FreeAxez used in construction of

FreeAxez (Con’t. from p. 1) new casinos?

JM: Yes! For new construction,FreeAxez has been installed to provideclients with unmatched versatility for thelong term. The design generally incorpo-rates a recessed slab that creates a walk-off from concrete floors at restaurantsand restrooms onto FreeAxez. In gamingfloor areas where you need wire manage-ment and access, FreeAxez providesflexibility from day one.

GN: Is FreeAxez used in renovation andretrofit of existing facilities?

JM: Yes! In retrofit of existing gamingfacilities, the steel casino flooring sys-tem has enabled many of our clients toachieve same-day renovation results.FreeAxez is installed quietly and rap-idly without noise, fumes, dust ordebris. FreeAxez ramping can provideseamless entry without handrails.FreeAxez will not cause disruption tothe casino operation; your facility canremain open for business whileFreeAxez is installed!

GN: What floor covering is installed on

top of the FreeAxez steel floor?

JM: Many of our casino clients installdecorative 3-foot by 3-foot wool carpettiles on top of FreeAxez. These tiles areconstructed of the same 80 percent woolfabric that has been a staple of casino car-peting, providing a broadloom look withboth aesthetics and flexibility!

GN: Where else is FreeAxez used?

JM: FreeAxez is installed in casinos, ClassA office space, conference rooms, surveil-lance rooms, training rooms, libraries, trad-ing floors, court rooms, museums, retail, emergency operations, hospitals, computerrooms and financial buildings. FreeAxez isa very versatile system.

GN: How can our readers learn moreabout FreeAxez?

advanced biometric time and attendancesolutions, we felt that we had the techni-cal know-how to bring some truly usefulproducts to the gaming industry. Mostimportantly, though, we sensed thatcasino owners would want to work withour company because we have a long-standing tradition of giving our cus-tomers exactly what they want. Todevelop all of the products in the CMIGaming portfolio, we met with and trulylistened to casino owners to get theirinput. Then we let their ideas guide aswe developed our products.

As such, we are offering a suite of prod-ucts that casinos truly need: PokerTableIQ for poker room management,WorkForce IQ for time and attendancemanagement, and Entry IQ for facilityaccess management.

GN: What void is CMI Gaming filling inthe gaming industry?

JK: Although there are many compa-nies serving the gaming industry, weare offering the user-friendly technologythat casino owners have been seekingfor quite some time. To start, ourunique touch screen technology makesour solutions extremely intuitive. Inaddition, our technology solutions areflexible and customized to meet theneeds of individual casinos. As aresult, casino owners and managerswon’t spend hours and hours of theirvaluable time trying to make sense ofthe software. Instead, they can simplyjump right in—and get results.

We are also concentrating on bringinga new level of sophistication to thepoker room, long the ‘neglected step-child’ of many casinos. With ourPokerTable IQ, casinos now can effec-tively market and efficiently managetheir poker room operations.

GN: With the economy still struggling, why would a casino owner want to invest

CMI Gaming (Con’t. from p. 1) in software solutions, specifically thosedesigned for the poker room?

JK: Yes, the economy is still falter-ing—and it’s difficult for any businessincluding casinos to make investments. But many casinos are ignoring theopportunity that is inherent in theirpoker rooms and that, quite frankly, could be a big mistake. Poker enjoyeda surge of renewed popularity at thebeginning of the decade—and is stillholding its own. To make poker roomsprofitable, though, casino owners mustoperate them efficiently and market thegame effectively. Our PokerTable IQ isan easy-to-use, stand-alone poker roommanagement solution that seamlesslyintegrates waiting lists, seating, playertracking and rewards and comps in one system.

Our system helps to improve the player experience by making it possi-ble to provide premier customer serv-ice. Players can quickly and effortlessly

get assigned to a table. What’s more, our solution tracks player time makingit easy to fairly reward poker playerswith comps, just as slot players are recognized.

The system not only makes it possibleto provide the customer with betterservice but to turn over more handseach hour, providing casinos withadditional revenue. And, our robustsolution makes it possible for casinosto collect player data and develophighly targeted customer marketingand loyalty programs—that will helpcasinos make the most of their poker rooms each day, each hour, each minute!

sales. In 1992 our focus switched to thecashless ATM, or scrip as it was oftencalled, until 1994 when the ATMbecame our main line of business. Wecontinue to have credit/debit card pro-cessing, ATM and equipment mainte-nance to which we have added cashadvance and redemption equipment.

Our focus has always been to keepeverything simple and straightforward. That is not to say that we have not beenon the cutting edge of technology, but ourprimary focus has been to make it simplefor the customer. Our focus has thus beenon high transaction approval rates, greatservice, great reporting and providing themost cash to the floor possible with the

lowest possible cost to the card holder, thus spurring usage and a greater returnto the casino.

In 2008 we solidified our partner-ships with Royal Bank of Scotland in thecredit card area, US Bank to increase ourcash availability and G&D for redemp-tion, on-floor advertising and bankautomation equipment. We formed a part-nership in 2009 with Certegy for CheckGuarantee. These partnerships allow us tocontinue providing best-in-class productsand services while maintaining our focuson service, reporting and the best transac-tion approval rates in the nation.

In our experience a gaming propertyshould see 70 percent or more of theircash to the floor coming from ATM transactions with the remaining volume

International Merchant Services (Con’t. from p. 1) made up of cash from PIN debit, thenfrom cashing checks and lastly from sig-nature cash advance via credit and debitcards. Many companies and casinosfocus on the cash advance which is themost profitable, it is also the most expen-sive for the card holders and thus bringsin the least amount of cash to the floor(funds customers spend in the casino).

By focusing on providing cash inthe least expensive/most popular methodto card holders, we are able to provide asignificant increase of cash to the floor. That of course requires adjustments inequipment types, how that equipment isallocated and where you locate thatequipment for the highest usage by thecard holder.

Over the last five years the way that

card holders have accessed their fundshas been moving towards debit. Checkusage is being reduced, with most ofthat usage moving to debit. In addition, cash advance volume has remained flator has been reduced as patrons haveincreasingly sought to reduce theiramount of outstanding credit.

By keeping our focus simple andproviding what the card holders want in afast and reliable mechanism, we are ableto significantly increase cash to the casino floor and the overall profitabilityof our customers while keeping their customers, the card holders, happy.
