PROJECT LEAD THE WAY

MODULE 1 Structure and Function:

Exploring Design

Students will discover the design

process and how engineers influence

their lives. Identifying products

around them that were designed by

an engineer, asking questions that

engineers might ask as they

designed the product, and

determining the structure and

function of items represent student

exploration of structure and

function. Working in small groups,

students will design, build, and test

a structure from available materials

to withstand a force. Students apply

newly acquired knowledge and

skills as they utilize the design

process to design, sketch, build, test,

and reflect on a new tool design.

S.S1.C1.PO2 Ask questions based

on experiences with objects,

organisms, and events in the

environment.

S.S1.C2.PO2 Participate in guided

investigations in life, physical, and

Earth and space sciences.

S.S1.C4.PO1 Communicate

observations with pictographs,

pictures, models, and/or words.

S.S1.C4.PO2 Communicate with

other groups to describe the results

of an investigation.

PLTW MODULE 1

Q1 How do you know

something has been

designed by a person or

a group of people?

Q2 Why should a step

by step process be

followed to solve a

problem?

Q3 Why is the structure

Q4 Why is the function

of an object important?

PLTW MODULE 1 Students will be able to independently use their learning to …

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY

MODULE 3 Structure & Function:

Human Body

Students will explore the

relationship between structure and

function in the human body. They

will look at major structures, or

organs, within the body and

investigate how the structure of each

organ is related to its function. Once

students establish an understanding

of basic structure and function in the

body, they will then take a deeper

look at the functions of bone. They

will assemble a skeleton and create a

model X-ray of a hand. They will

then act as scientists to perform an

inquiry investigation to understand

why fingers are made up of more

than one bone. Finally, students will

work through an engineering design

process to design and build a cast to

aid healing of a broken bone.

S.S4.C1.PO2 Name the following

human body parts:

arms

wrists

PLTW MODULE 3

parts of our bodies have

different structures and

functions?

Q2 How do scientists

find answers to

questions about the

world around them?

Q3 How do medical

professionals diagnose

and treat patients who

have broken bones?

PLTW MODULE 3 Students will be able to independently use their learning to …

Identify how a structure of a body part is related to its function in the human body.

Ask questions, make observations, and investigate ideas in order to acquire knowledge and solve problems.

MODULE 4: Animals and

Algorithms

Students explore the nature of

computers and the ways in which

humans control and use technology.

Starting with a computer-free

activity, students learn about the

sequential nature of computer

programs. Students apply this

knowledge to the domain of science

when they design a simple algorithm

about an animal in its habitat. Using

an age-appropriate programming

environment, students use their

newly developed programming

skills to turn their algorithm into a

short animation. Through this work,

students come to understand that

computing is a collaborative activity

that can be used to create digital

artifacts pertaining to any area of

interest.

S.S3.C2.PO1 Describe how simple

tools (e.g., scissors, pencils, paper

clips, hammers) can make tasks

easier.

MODULE 2: Pushes and Pull

As students investigate different pushes and pulls on the motion of an object, they will develop knowledge and skills related to forces of differing strengths and directions. Students will reflect on the effect of modifying the strength or direction of a force. S.S5.C3.PO1 Investigate how
