HOW TO USE

Complete your basic edits using the Exposure and White Balance sliders within Lightroom’s Basics panel.*

For those new to Lightroom or who otherwise prefer a quick correction, we’ve included a Kickstarter (All Auto) preset, which uses Lightroom’s autocorrect tools to adjust your exposure and white balance according to the histogram.

EXPOSURE & WHITE BALANCE

Select your preferred preset, or cycle through the preset options until you find one that suits your vision. For optimum workflow, the presets are organized by Group: Versatility (GR1), Richness (GR2), Brightness (GR3), and Softness (GR4).

If at any time you want to zero out the preset adjustments and return to only your original white balance and exposure corrections, simply choose Uproot (Preset Reset).

If desired, choose a light add-on or two for a natural vignette, directional light enhancement, or directional fill light.

You can reset the light add-ons at any time (without resetting Steps 1 and 2) by clicking the None (Add-on Undo) preset.

LIGHT ADD-ONS

Presets can get you 75%-80% of the way there, but most images can benefit from individual adjustments to bring out their best. Sometimes subtle global adjustments to exposure, contrast, or color are in order. Other times, local adjustments are needed. Either way, we highly recommend adding individual touches to finish each of your images off.

We have included six demonstration photos to show how various presets affect individual images. Every image in this guide has been created with a one-click, untweaked version of the named preset. In many cases, image-specific tweaking and local adjustments will yield even more amazing results.

TO INSTALLDownload The Garden Collection presets to your local hard drive, and unzip the folder using your preferred unarchive program. Next, open Lightroom and click the Develop Module. The Presets panel appears on the left side of the screen. Right click the panel, and select Import. Navigate to the folder where you have unzipped your presets. Select the folder “Click & Co - Garden Collection,” then click Import.

In many cases, image-specific tweaking and local adjustments will

yield even more amazing results.

* Our presets will never touch your Exposure or White Balance adjustments. While a reasonably “correct” foundation will yield the best one-click results, some photographers may prefer to apply presets first, then tweak Exposure and White Balance after the fact. Photographers who Expose to the Right (ETTR) or who otherwise favor brighter exposures SOOC may find the need to reduce exposure after applying the presets.

Aster is your go-to preset for elevating moderately contrasty images, especially those that feature directional light. Use Aster on window light images, backlit images, or any images that need some extra punch.

Not recommended for flat lighting or a soft, hazy look.

Use Tip: Of the three presets in the Versatility Group, Aster is the richest. If you find it to be too heavy, try moving the Contrast slider down to zero.

[ GROUP 1: VERSATILITY ]

With tempered yellows and greens, bluebell imparts a blustery, slightly bleached coolness to images without sacrificing the natural warmth of skin tones or the vibrance of red and blue hues. This one is especially lovely in snow and water scenes.

Use Tip: Love the tonality but prefer the original warmth of the white balance you set? Warm your white balance up by about 500 degrees Kelvin to offset the coolness Bluebell adds.

[ GROUP 3: BRIGHTNESS ]

A beautifully buttery update to one of our favorite film-inspired looks, Buttercup brings warmth and light into the frame while protecting a photo’s natural highlights.

Buttercup is especially lovely on low-to-medium contrast images or those that can benefit from fill-light to soften shadows to even the tone.

Use Tip: Like the tonality but not the added warmth? Restore cleaner color by pulling down on the temperature slider by about 500 degrees Kelvin.

[ GROUP 4: SOFTNESS ]

Easy, breezy Daisy is beautiful for brightening shadows and softening contrast in neutral images that call for subtle processing and a touch of sunshine.

Use Tip: On the wrong image, Daisy can look positively flat. Often you’ll want to just try a different preset, but if you want to see what you can do with Daisy, try working with the Whites and Blacks sliders to add some richness and depth as needed.

[ GROUP 3: BRIGHTNESS ]

Succulent Elderberry showcases full tones, rich color, and a hint of plum within the deeper end of the histogram.

Use Tip: Elderberry has slightely less contrast than her Richness counterparts. If you’re wanting more punch, move the Contrast slider to the right by 10-20 points.

[ GROUP 2: RICHNESS ]

With warm tones and russet hues woven into the shadows, Foxglove is a perfect choice for infusing a photo with richness and a hint of nostalgia. This one’s sure to be a favorite among photographers who favor emotional scenes and dramatic light.

Use Tip: Foxglove’s brassy shadows are part of what makes it special, but if they are too much for your image, tone them down by changing the Shadows sliders in the Split Toning panel to Hue 190, Saturation 4.

[ GROUP 2: RICHNESS ]

Like Buttercup and Primrose, Honeysuckle is ideal for images that call for creamy tones and a gentle touch. This one has a touch of green in the shadows and that slightest hint of cross-processing to give it a lightly vintage edge.

Use Tip: Honeysuckle’s subdued midtone greens are a nod to film, but if it’s too much for you, you can restore them by adjusting the saturation of yellow and green in the HSL panel.

[ GROUP 4: SOFTNESS ]

Originally named “Workflow #1” in our personal collection, Ivy is one of two Garden presets (together with Larkspur) designed to polish images with carefully designed tonal enhancements and minimal color shifts.

Use Tip: Ivy pushes highlights further than the other presets in the Versatility Group do. If desired, you can soften them by pulling down on the Lights slider in the Tone Curve panel.

[ GROUP 1: VERSATILITY ]

Previously named “Workflow #2,” Larkspur was developed specifically for achieving dramatic but balanced tones in clean color images. Its luminous highlights, inky blacks, and gently popped color make Larkspur (like Ivy) an ideal preset to take strong SOOC images to the next level.

Use Tip: Perhaps the most harmonious preset in the collection, Larkspur rarely needs much adjustment. When it does, it’s usually the highlights that need punch; slide up the Whites slider to let it shine.

Like the moment the sun peeks through the clouds, Morning Glory brings your photos to life with clean, filtered illumination. It’s low on drama and high on pretty, joyful light.

Use Tip: Presets don’t get dreamier than Morning Glory! If it’s too soft for you, pull down on the Darks slider in the Tone Curve to restore some midtone contrast.

[ GROUP 4: BRIGHTNESS ]

This dusty rose-hued preset has a romantic vibe. Pastel in color and tone, with a delicate pink wash, Primrose is the perfect choice for newborn, maternity, engagement, and other photos that we view through the hazy lens of love.

Use Tip: As with Morning Glory, the simplest way to restore more contrast to Primrose is pull down on the Darks slider in the Tone Curve.

[ GROUP 4: SOFTNESS ]

Cheerful Snapdragon lives up to its fiery, friendly name. The preset features lively colors, beautiful skin tones, and just enough contrast punch, for a clean, commercial look.

Use Tip: Snapdragon greens a little too vibrant for you? Pull that green hue slider back towards yellow in the HSL panel.

The Versatility Group: GR1 ASTER, IVY & LARKSPUR

True workhorse presets, the Versatility Group could easily be a standalone collection for the photographer who loves

light/shadow contrast and prefers an overall clean look. Each manages tonality a little differently, so we recommend clicking

through all to see what suits a given image best.

We found that Aster best enhanced this image, but you can see how similar Ivy (bottom left) and Larkspur (bottom right) are;

the differences are most apparent when you click through them in succession.

The Richness Group: GR2 ELDERBERRY, FOXGLOVE & SNAPDRAGON

The Richness trio are united in their emphasis on contrast and jewel tones, but each is unique in its treatment of the various color families, especially in the shadows.

We chose Snapdragon in the image above, but Foxglove (bottom right) was a close contender, and Elderberry (bottom left) suits the image as well.

These three presets bring a radiant boost to any image while maintaining contrast and protecting highlights.

We chose Morning Glory in the image above, but cooler Bluebell (bottom left) and subtler Daisy (bottom right) also

suit the photo.

The Softness Group: GR4 PRIMROSE, BUTTERCUP & HONEYSUCKLE

Similar in their creamy, lighter tonality but quite different in color variations, this trio of presets have a complementary style that fit together nicely.

We chose Primrose in the image above, particularly for the cool pops of green it imparts, but Buttercup (bottom left) and Honeysuckle (bottom right) are also lovely here.

Open Shade comes in three variations, which differ in intensity:

Open Shade (i): The original Open Shade. Subtle and flattering.

Open Shade (ii): Bright, Broad Shade

Open Shade (iii): Darker and More Contrasty

Use Tip: Open Shade’s dual radial filters can also be moved to the area of the subject’s location when a subject is not centrally located. Open Shade can be stacked with any Color Preset, plus Sunbeam OR Sunshower (Sunbeam and Sunshower cannot be stacked concurrently).

Both Sunshower and Sunbeam can be used interchangeably to enhance the natural direction of light or to lift

the shadows. Because Sunshower is the broader and softer of the

two, however, it works especially naturally opposite the light to soften

a shadowy area.

LIGHT AMPLIFIER > The light is naturally coming in from the

left side, presumably from a window or door. We add sunshower (i) to the

horizontal image to amplify the existing flow of light.

SHADOW FILLER > Light enters from the left side, and add-ing additional “light” from the opposite direction will soften the natural fall off.

We add sunshower (ii) to the horizontal image to lift the shadows, softening and warming the contrast between

light on the left and darkness at right.

Pair your favorite color preset with open shade and/or either sunbeam or sunshower for stunning results.
