President’s Message
Spring finally arrived in my garden this week. I
never count it officially spring until I see my first
rose in bloom. Blooms of ‘Climbing Pinkie’
made their debut on Saturday and with the
warmer temps and some fertilizer, all our roses
are in GROW mode for the season. We hope to
have some pretty blooms to exhibit in the rose
show next month.
'Climbing Pinkie' Polyantha
It will soon be time for summer garden tours and
it is my hope we will have gardens to visit May,
June, July & August. Tina and I will be hosting
the first tour of the year in our little garden in
May. Details to come. If you are interested in
hosting a tour of your garden, please contact
Sharon Bamberg at 205-637-6954 to schedule
your date.
As discussed in our last meeting we will hold a
dedication ceremony in the Dunn Formal Rose
Garden on Friday May 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. to
dedicate a bed of 20 ‘Coretta Scott King’ bushes,
a new grandiflora rose introduced by Weeks
Roses in honor of the Fifty Years Forward
commemoration going on this year in
Birmingham. Mayor William Bell and Executive
Director of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens,
Fred Spicer will give remarks and we will
symbolically plant the roses in the garden. This
event will garner local press coverage and I hope
you will make every effort to come out in support
of our society and the community which we serve.

support them and our advertisers with your

April 2013
This has been a busy month with the plant sale and
taking care of everything else in our garden. If you
did not help with the sale, you missed a good time,
lots of fun and fellowship. Hope you’ll plan to
help next year.
By now everyone’s rose garden should be pruned
and you should have begun your spray program. It
is important to stay on top of black spot fungus,
thrips and aphids so that your roses will look their
very best this year. You only have a few more
weeks to grow and groom your roses before our
rose show on May 11th. Read the schedule and
decide which classes you want to enter. Walk your
garden and look at your roses.
Now may be the time to “thumb prune” your roses.
As the bud eyes develop, you may notice one or
two side buds in addition to the center bud. If you
allow only the center bud to develop, you will have
a larger bloom as the cane matures. This procedure
is called “thumb pruning” as you pinch off the side
buds.
If you have Floribundas, do not disbud them as
they bloom in clusters. Remove the center bud to
allow all the energy to go to the other buds in the
cluster.
The schedule has many places to enter roses such
as baskets of miniatures, many collections of three
or five or even twelve.
If your foliage is bad, cut off the blooms for an
English box, a painters palette or even a floating
Rose “N” Crystal.
An arrangement is a beautiful way to exhibit your
roses. Also don’t forget the photography section of
the show.
Last month Jim Callaway gave a very good program
on rose care and spraying. He emphasized the
importance of watering. It is important to give the
proper amount of water to have good roses to
exhibit. On the average the proper amount of water
is one inch of water per week.
Celia Thaxter once said” Happy is the man who
enters this world with a passion for flowers in his
soul”
Share your passion for roses with someone else.
Come and bring your roses to the show.

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the
Birmingham Rose Society March 25, 2013
6:30 P.M.
Chris VanCleave, President called the meeting to
order. We had thirty-one members, and one visitor
attending the meeting. The hostesses, Martha
Eskew, Dean Hodge and Gloria Purnell were
thanked for providing refreshments for the
evening.
The minutes from the February 25th meeting were
approved as printed in the March Garden Faces
newsletter.
Hyacinth Prince gave the treasurer’s report. As of
March 25, 2013 the checking account balance is
$3,789.09 and the CD balance is unchanged at
$5,073.01.
The pruning volunteers were thanked for coming
to prune the rose garden on March 2nd
. There will
be a special event at the rose garden on Friday,
May 10th.
Weeks Roses has a rose for 2014 named
Corretta Scott King to commemorate the civil
rights anniversary. Birmingham Mayor Bell will
dedicate twenty roses at 11:00 am.
Robert Eskew reminded us again about the Plant
Sale that will be held April 4-7, 2013. The sale site
will be at the old Century Plaza where the JCPenny
store was located. Volunteers are needed to help
with this big event that is a lot of fun and helps the
Garden.
Tina VanCleave and Hyacinth Prince prepared the
new Birmingham Rose Society Membership Guide
and Directory for 2013. The directories were
handed out to members. One directory per family
was made available
We were reminded that ads for the Rose Show program
must be in by Monday, April 1st. The program booklet
will be printed on April 5th and 6
th.
Sharon Bamberg, Program Chairman introduced Jim
Callaway, our speaker for the evening. He was president
of the Mobile Rose Society before moving to Locust
Fork, Alabama. He is also a consulting rosarian. His
program told the members how to properly plant a new
rose, how to spray for insects and disease, and how to
fertilize roses. His garden contains 70 roses. He keeps
a log and a calendar each year and writes down when
and what he uses on his roses. A spraying schedule and
fertilizing schedule are musts. It is easy to forget when
you did what to your rose garden. It is also a good idea
to change up the products we use because of resistance
to a product after continued use. The program was very
informative.
Preparing for the Rose Show will be the program next
month.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 P.M.
