To top it off, tease your hair to make it look messy, like you haven’t washed it for days. Pajama Party: If sleep is your favorite activity, this costume is just for you! All you need is comfortable pajama bottoms and a shirt to match. To add a little more zest, throw on a pair of fuzzy slippers! If you’re a girl, just create a cute, messy up-do for your hair style. There were two farmers, Charles and Chuck. They farmed and raised cattle up in the mountains, doing the same thing every day. They bring their cows down into a valley during summer for a few months, then returned during the fall sea-sons. All day they tended the cows, returned to their hut, ate a bland dinner, and went to bed. The work was easy, but it was oh so boring. It was always the same. They had just returned from the mountains, the leaves were falling, the weather had grown cold, and a deathly wind blew. One fall morning Charles had an idea that changed every-thing. “Let’s make a doll the size of a man, he could scare away the crows from our garden,” he said. “It would be great fun and we could have someone else to talk to eh?” Chuck contemplated the idea. “It should look like Dexter,” he said finally. Now, Dexter was a farmer they both hated. Eager to begin their project, they went about the grounds gathering supplies. They stuffed old sacks with straw, building up a scrawny frame. They gave it small eyes like Dexter’s, and a pointy nose like his. Chuck added a lump of muddy weeds for hair, and they both stood admiring their work. “It ain’t quite done,” Charles said. He drew a twisted

frown upon the canvas face. And, of course, they named it Dexter. Each morning on the way to the pasture, they brought Dex-ter and tied him to a pole to scare away the birds. And every night they came home they took him down and brought him inside so he wouldn’t get ruined if it rained. If they were feeling playful one of them might talk to Dexter and say,”How are the vegetables growing today Dexter?” Then the other pretending to be Dexter would say in a scratchy voice, “Very slowly.” They would both laugh. But not Dexter. If things went badly that day, they took it out on Dexter. They would kick and punch him. They smeared his face with their bland supper (which they both hated). They taunted him, “Do you like that vegetable stew Dexter?” one would ask. “Well you’d better eat it- or else.” Then the two men would howl with laughter. But not Dexter. One night after Chuck had smeared Dexter’s face with food, Dexter grunted. “Did you hear that Chuck?” Charles asked. “That there heap of straw just made some kinda noise!” They both peered at the scarecrow hunched over on the wooden chair. Then they heard it again. “Dexter is tryin’ to talk!” Charles said as his voice turned frightened. “He’s just a sack of straw, it ain’t possible,” Chuck scoffed. “Let’s just toss him in the fire and be done with it.”“Let’s not do nothin’ stupid. I say we just leave him be here when we go up with the cows. For now we’ll keep an eye on him,” Charles said.So they left him sitting in a corner of the hut, and he stayed there, making a few grunting noises every

few days. After a while they de-cided some kind of bug must have gotten inside of him to make those noises. So they returned to bringing him along to the garden, and back inside. Treating him as badly as ever. One night, Charles noticed something that frightened him. “Dexter is growing,” he said. “I seen that too,” Chuck said.“It most likely ain’t nothing but our imaginations,” Charles replied. “We been up in these mountains too long.” The next morning while they ate, Dexter stood up and loped right out the door. He climbed to the top of the hut onto the roof, and walked back and forth all day and all night. In the morning he climbed down and went to stand in a corner of the pasture. The men didn’t know what he would do next. And they were afraid. They decided that same day to take the cows down to the valley. When they left, Dexter was nowhere to be seen. They felt as if they had escaped. But, after only going a mile, they realized they had forgotten the milking stools.Neither man wanted to return, but the stools would cost money to re-place. So, they drew straws. Chuck pulled the shorter one, and he was scared. “I’ll catch up with you,” he told Charles. As Charles came to a rise in the path, he looked back for Chuck. He couldn’t see him anywhere. But he did see Dexter. The doll was on the roof of the hut. And as he watched, Dexter kneeled to stretch a bloody skin to dry in the sun.

4The Presidency run will be a tight race this year. With four candi-dates running for president you are sure to find someone that you want to vote for. Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Gary Johnson, and Jill Stein are the candidates for 2016. If you don’t know who you’re voting for yet, continue to read this article and find out which candidate is the best fit for you. Donald J. Trump is an American businessman, author, entrepre-neur, politician, and the Republi-can Party Candidate for the 2016 Presidential election. He strongly believes in the second amendment. He wants to get serious about prosecuting violent criminals. He is against abortion stating, “As far as Planned Parenthood is concerned, I’m pro-life.” As for education, if you are a believer in education, than Trump is the best candidate for you. He believes that every child in America deserves an education. He wants kids to get the most they can out of life, and to always grow as smart as they can. He says, “I am a tremendous believer in education, but edu-cation has to be at a local level. We cannot have the bureaucrats in Washington telling you how to manage your child’s education.”

Hillary Clinton is an American politician, and the 2016 Democrat-ic Party nominee.

Hillary believes that immigration should be available to everybody. She also believes that everyone should have the opportunity to become a full citizen. In the case of foreign policies, Clinton says that she wants to make America the world power that it once was. She wants to keep a good mili-tary, wants to defeat ISIS, and is a supporter of the Iran nuclear deal. Hillary Clinton is pro-choice. She believes that the government should not interfere with a preg-nant woman and her decisions. She says, “I’ve been proud to stand with Planned Parenthood for a long time and as President, I will always have your back.”

Gary Johnson is a businessman, au-thor, politician, and the Libertarian Party Candidate for the Presidential Election. Johnson believes that

everybody should have religious freedoms. He says, “America is big enough to accommodate differ-ences of opinion and practices in religious and social beliefs.” Gary Johnson believes that abortion is a personal choice, and he is pro-choice. He and his running mate, Bill Weld, believe that individuals should be able to make the choice about what is best for their child.

Jill Stein is a physician, author, ac-tivist, and the Green Party’s nom-inee for President of the United States in 2016. She has established a “Medicare for All” for American citizens. Stein wants to end poverty for all American citizens.

We sent a poll to the entire student body of who they would vote for, if they were 18, for President of the United States.

The Origin of HalloweenBy: Cc Panek 6

Halloween is based off of an old Celtic festival called “Samhain,” to celebrate November 1st, the end of summer and the beginning of winter. The Celts concluded that on the night before this new time of year, the lines between the worlds of the living and the dead blurred. They believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth, damaging crops and creating trouble for people. There are many traditions that we do within Halloween, like trick or treating! Trick or treating actual-ly comes from a time in the 1800’s when immigrants, as well as the poor and homeless, went to neighboring homes to beg for food. This eventually broadened to children visiting houses in search of goodies and sweets. Now every Halloween night, kids of all ages go throughout their town or area, dressed up in spooky costumes saying “Trick or Treat!” as the owner of the house greets them with candy. Another great Halloween tradition is carving pumpkins. When the Irish immigrants came to America, they brought this fun little Halloween idea. They believed that the carved pumpkins could ward off evil spirits.

Did you know?? The first jack-o-lanterns were actually made from carved turnips rather than pumpkins. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and if you heard an owl's hoot, it meant someone was about to die. Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers. 50% of kids prefer to get chocolate candies on Halloween. The largest pumpkin ever measured was in 1993 with a size of 836 lbs. In Hollywood there is a $1,000 fine if you use silly string on Halloween. Willow Smith (pop singer), Rob Schneider (actor) and Vanilla Ice (rapper) were born on October 31st. Americans purchase over 20 million pounds of Candy Corn each year.

7 It’s that time of the football season where intensity is rising. A time where every game matters. This season the Owls have one of the toughest districts in the entire state. Garden Plain’s district opponents are Conway Spring, Chaparral, and Cheney. Going into the district play the teams had a combined record of 22 wins and 2 loses. That means that there will be 2 good football teams that won’t make the playoffs. That can be frustrating considering that Douglass, Independent, Belle Plaine and Bluestem make up another 3A district. Their combined record going into district play was 3 wins and 21 loses. Two teams with losing records will make the playoffs. There is nothing that Garden Plain can do about the districts that the state put together other than take one game at a time. Garden Plain opened district play against Conway Springs. Conway was 5-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of a 4A powerhouse, Mulvane. The two teams traded scores and spent half time tied at 14. Conway then scored in the fourth quarter, along with Garden Plain shortly after. The two point conversion pass by Nate Pauly was no good. Garden Plain fell to Conway 20-21.In the second game, Garden Plain faced the undefeated Chaparral team. This game was chosen as game of the week and the Owls continued to make it game of the week after upsetting Chaparral's perfect record. The game first started off with Chaparral scoring, but the boys knew that they still had a chance. Nate Pauly turned the game around by tying the score with 47 yards. Shortly after, Marty Landwehr intercepted the ball giving the Owls a chance to score again. The final score of the game was 22-14. With a win over this tough team, Garden Plain saves their playoff chances. This week the boys will be facing Cheney. With Conway Springs’ 34-12 victory over Cheney Friday night, the Owls will need to top Cheney and pull for a Conway Springs win over Chaparral in Week Nine. Make sure to come out and support the boys, do not forget to wear your student section themed clothes and help the boys continue their season!

Lady Owl Golfers Take On State By: Jacqueline Strunk

All five Lady Owl golfers participated in the Regional Golf tournament at Lake Barton Country Club on October 10th. It was the last tournament the girls’ played in together. As a team they placed 4th and unfortunately did not get the opportunity to go to state, but two of the Lady Owls qualified as individuals! With scores of 107 and 108, Jacqueline Strunk and Hope Seiwert continued their season another week! The Girls 3-2-1A State tournament was held at Buffalo Dunes Golf Club in Garden City. The course is extremely difficult and equipped with fast greens and sand traps. In the end, Jacqueline Strunk finished her round with a 103 and placed 21st. She said “I know I could’ve played better, but thankfully I have senior year to make up for it!” Hope Seiwert finished with a 111 and placed 36th out of over eighty girls. Coach Schueller exclaimed that he was proud of them both and is excited to see what they can do next year. All five girls cannot wait until next and hope more girls will consider joining the team!

Lone cross country runner Chandler Kreutziger has another year in the books! At league, he finished with a time of 22.56. He was asked what he would’ve done differently to get to regionals and he responded, “I would try to get a bigger push at every mile.” He said he is proud of his time but knows that he could’ve done better. Chandler plans on running next year to redeem himself and wishes others would join! He is excited with what he will be able to accomplish next season as a junior.

8 The Lady Owls volleyball team had a great season with a record of 26-11! They had some amazing games. Garden Plain has had some great competition throughout the year, but still their biggest competition was Cheney. The other day I asked Paige Hoheisel what the best part of this season was. “The best part of this season has been growing and getting closer to people you go to school with. It has been very fun and exciting to get to know the underclassmen. Watching them grow as people and as players is a great thing to experience as a senior. Often as a senior I don’t think you see yourself really being friends with underclass-men, but sports brings you together. But our team bonding on the weekends definitely helped us get to know each other also.” said Paige. At the first home games Lady Owls played Douglass and Chaparral. The first game was against Dou-glass. At the beginning everybody was pumped by the music and ready to crush them. In the first set Lady Owls destroyed Douglass. In the second and third set, Douglas beat Garden Plain. It was a tough game but the Lady Owls knew they had to step it up for the next game. They destroyed Chaparral in two sets. With the turnout of these games, it placed the Lady Owls 3rd in league. Ending that day with senior night, the junior girls gave all the seniors flowers and candy. Going 4th into substate tournament, Lady Owls had a rough bracket. In the top half of the brack-et Cheney in first, Kingman in second, and Sedwick in third. The bottom half of the bracket has Conway Springs in fifth, Hutchinson-Trinity in sixth, Halstead in seventh, and Chaparral in eighth. At three o’clock they played against Conway Springs. Lady Owls won, going into three matches though it was a tough game. The next game was against their biggest competition this year, Cheney. Cheney won both matches against the Lady Owls. The score did not end how we would have liked it to but it was still a great game. The Lady Owls had a fantastic year and they are ready for next season to begin!

9 You know what’s Vexing Vincent? This presidential election, that’s what. You want to know why? Well, I’m about to tell you. Actually, now that I think about it, it’s probably not hard for some to imagine why I find this election so vexing. For those of you who don’t know, however, I’ll fill you in. In this presidential election, there are, as per usual, two major candidates. They are Republican and billionaire businessman Donald Trump, as well as Democrat and former Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. These two are… well, terrible candidates. I would probably trust a fox to handle chick-ens more that I would trust either of them with America. Donald Trump has been known as crude and unin-formed about politics, and he also has some reported past incidences involving the mistreatment of women, all of which are hurting his chances of winning. Hillary Clinton’s past is no less of a ball and chain to her, considering her many scandals, including, but not limited to, the misuse of funds in her family charity, the poor handling of classified information, and the deletion of over 30,000 crucial emails. She is also married to Bill Clinton, who has been called a rapist by some. Not exactly prime candidates, if you ask me. Or you can look at it this way: you need to choose a president, and your choices are a rude, ignorant billionaire or an incredibly corrupt rapist enabler. Yeah, have fun making that choice. And the amount of stupid things they say, oh my goodness. Considering all of the struggles Trump is having with women, you would think he would tread lightly with with what he says about them. Nope. During the second and third presidential debates, after being asked about a tape that caught him talking about groping women, he literally said that no one has more respect for women than he does. …What? Like that makes any sense. And then there’s Hillary Clinton, who continuously says that she will fight for women’s right and the right for rape victims to be believed even though she tried to silence her husband’s rape victims to protect him and herself from negative reputations. Good job Hillary, we completely believe that. I could keep going on about what’s wrong with this election for hours, what with media bias, Clinton’s scandals, wikileaks, and Trump’s possible harass-ment victims coming forward. If I go on too long, though, I’ll probably give myself a massive migraine. If you see me in the hallways, do me a favor and don’t act like these candidates. Maybe then I won’t have to al-ways think about how this election will impact our lives.
