  • Johnston Named To Ted Hendricks Award Watch ListSenior defensive end Brian Johnston (6-5, 280) was one of 27 college football players named to the preseason Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Watch List in early-July, which is given annually to the nation's top college player at the position. Normally an award reserved for Bowl Subdivision players, simlarly to the Heisman Trophy (top player), Thorpe Award (top defensive back) and Groza Award (top kicker), Johnston is the only player from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) named to the list. Johnston is the first and only Big South Conference student-athlete to be named to an FBS-level award watchlist. Previous Hendricks Award winners include LaMarr Woodley (Michigan, 2006), El-vis Dumervil (Louisville, 2005), David Pollack (Georgia, 2003-2004) and Terrell Suggs (Arizona State, 2002).

An Early Week OffGardner-Webb enjoyed an early open date in the 2007 schedule, and has gone 8-3 since 1997 after an off weekend. The 2001 schedule had two open dates, with one Saturday canceled following the events of 9/11. GWU topped Division II Glenville State after its open date last season. The last time Gardner-Webb had such an early open date was in 2005, and GWU fell, 31-28, at home to UT-Martin in their first weekend back – squandering a 28-10 halftime lead.

High Speed Long DistanceSophomore running back David Montgomery (5-7, 168) was a blur for much of the night in Gardner-Webb's 27-6 win over Jacksonville on Sept. 8. The Sugar Hill, Ga., speedster broke off touchdown runs of 29 and 74

yards and rushed 11 times for 145 yards in just over a half of action. Following his 74-yard run with 14:12 remaining in the third quarter, Montgomery took the rest of the night off. Montgomery's average of 13.2 yards per carry set a new GWU Division I era record, as did his 74-yard jaunt. Montgomery also had a 23-yard run in the game, and now has recorded four of Gardner-Webb's seven longest plays in 2007. His efforts on the two touchdown runs helped Gardner-Webb post a pair of scoring drives that lasted a combined 47 seconds.

Campbell Cookin'Gardner-Webb quarterback Devin Campbell (6-4, 186, Jr.) made his 12th career start vs. Jacksonville and topped the 200-yard mark through the air for the third game in a row – and for the sixth time in his last seven appearances under center. The Greenville, S.C., native did not start the Bulldogs' opener at Ohio, but came off the bench to pass for 201 yards and a pair of scores – helping GWU keep the game much closer, for much longer, than the host Bobcats would have liked. Campbell has completed 260-of-457 career passes (56.6 percent) for 3,396 yards and 25 touchdowns, which leaves him eighth on the Bulldogs' career passing list.

More JohnstonDefensive end Brian Johnston was named Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the Jackson-ville game, after an eight-tackle, 3.5-tackle for loss performance. Johnston also recorded three quarterback pressures, batted down two passes and had a sack – leading GWU's defense in an effort that held JU to just 12 yards on the ground. Johnston has 10 tackles (five solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack, six pressures and two batted passes in two games this season, and ranks No. 8 nationally in tackles for loss per game (2.25 per game). He ranks ninth in GWU history with 37 tackles for loss and 10th with 16 career sacks.

  • Two Of A KindTwo of the nation's top defensive ends, and two strong NFL Draft prospects, will be showcasing their wares during Saturday's Gardner-Webb/Mississippi State clash. The visiting Runnin' Bulldogs feature end Brian Johnston, a 6-foot-5, 280-pounder with excellent speed (4.73 in the 40) and agil-ity (4.18 seconds in the pro agility shuttle). Johnston, who has 16 career sacks and 37 career tackles for loss, is the most heralded draft prospect at GWU since end Gabe Wilkins went in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL Draft. Mississippi State's Titus Brown (6-3, 250, Sr.) is projected by some draft experts as a potential first or second round pick – and is a relentless pass rusher with superb speed and athleticism. Brown has two sacks and five pressures through three games already in 2007.

Flagler Going For The TrifectaDuvaughn Flagler (6-1, 214, Sr.) became just the fourth receiver in Gardner-Webb's senior col-lege history to post a second 50-reception season in 2006, hauling in a career-best 64 passes. The Norcross, Ga., native can become the first player in Gardner-Webb history to record a third-straight 50-reception campaign if he can repeat the feat in 2007. Flagler currently sits in seventh position in GWU history with 141 career receptions. He hauled in seven passes for 51 yards and a 17-yard touch-down in the season opener at Ohio, and made five catches for 113 yards and a score vs. Jacksonville. Flagler has caught 24 career touchdown passes.

Season Opener Gardner-Webb gave preseason MAC favorite Ohio University plenty of headaches for three-plus quarters before falling, 36-14, in Athens. GWU trailed by just 10 points, 24-14, with more than 14 min-utes to play in the game, after junior quarterback Devin Campbell connected with Duvaughn Flagler on a 17-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats kicked a field goal to go up 27-14 later in the quarter – and put the game on ice by driving 89 yards and chewing up nearly seven minutes on their next drive. The 'Cats capped that march with a 3rd-and-1 scoring run by All-Ameri-can Kalvin McRae to take a 34-14 lead, and added a safety late in the game for the final margin.

More FlaglerFlagler is fast approaching the No. 2 spot on the Big South's career reception list. He needs just 10 catches to tie former VMI standout Zohn Burden for second (151). He has hauled in 1,938 yards receiving – good for fourth in league history – and has 24 career touchdown receptions.

Pay Your RentSenior cornerback Rent Sherrill had one of his best games ever at Ohio in the season opener. The 5-foot-11, 183-pounder tallied a career-high 11 hits and a tackle for loss in the game – and made his 30th career start at cornerback.

Rookies Play EarlyGardner-Webb's current active roster is comprised of a youthful mix, with 56 of 87 players members of the freshman or sophomore class (64.4 percent). 15 young men – including 10 true freshmen – saw the first playing time of their college careers at Ohio. Jeffrey Williams (Frisco City, Ala.) was one of those true freshmen starters, and recorded 10 hits in his first college game. Williams led the State of Alabama in tackles (196) a year ago, and ranked No. 6 nationally in tackles per game (19.6).

Follow The LeaderFor the first time since 2003, Gardner-Webb leads the Big South Conference statistical rankings in run defense, scoring defense and total defense at the same time. The Bulldogs are allowing just 109 yards on the ground and 322.5 total yards through two contests. GWU is giving up 21.0 ppg, with 36 of the 42 points scored coming against an FBS opponent (Ohio). Gardner-Webb also leads the Big South in total offensive yards per game (391.0 ypg) and passing offense (255.0 ypg).

Mississippi State RollingAfter dropping its nationally-televised season debut to the nation's top team, LSU, Sylvester Croom's Mississippi State squad has gotten on a roll, smashing Tulane in New Orleans and overpowering preseason top-25 foe Auburn on the Plains. The host Bulldogs are among the nation's best against the run, ranking No. 27 nationally among FBS schools, and feature a very strong rushing attack on offense – paced by tailbacks Anthony Dixon (6-1, 240, So.) and Christian Ducre (6-0, 215, So.).

More Notes On Mississippi StateThe host Bulldogs' starting offensive line is big, and athletic, averaging 6-3 1/2, 299 pounds per man – with no starter smaller than 6-3, 290 ... Anthony Dixon (6-1, 240, So.) is averaging 117.0 yards per game on the ground in Mississippi State's two wins this season ... Starting quarterback Michael Henig is out for the GWU game, and will miss 2-4 weeks with a hand injury ... MSU's defense has forced eight turnovers in three games (four interceptions / four fumbles).

MoonlightersGWU has seen several student-athletes pursue two sports on the college level over the past few years, and that did not change in 2006-2007. Safety Daniel Cooke, a two-time All-Big South Conference selection, earned Gardner-Webb's baseball team MVP award after leading the squad in batting (.338) and setting a new career-high with 22 steals. Cooke, a Charlotte, N.C., native (Independence HS) has swiped 37 bases in two seasons on the diamond. Quarterback Devin Campbell (Green-ville, S.C. / Wade Hampton HS) tried his hand on the mound with GWU's baseball team, and forged a relief ERA of 0.50 in 10 appearances out of the Bulldogs' bull-pen. Campbell also made a pair of mound starts for Gardner-Webb. Both Cooke (New York Collegiate) and Campbell (Southern Collegiate) spent their summers playing baseball in wooden bat leagues. Dobson Collins (Stone Mountain, Ga. / Stone Mountain HS) won the 2007 A-Sun Indoor Hurdles Championship at 60m, and was the league's Freshman of the Year outdoors in 2006. Brandon Jackson (Orlando, Fla. / Pine Castle Christian HS) was the backup point guard for GWU's basketball team in 2006-2007, seeing his first action at NC State in late November. Newcomer James "Tre" Perry (Greensboro, N.C. / Dudley HS) is expected to play baseball in addition to football in 2007-2008. Perry was an All-State selection on the diamond in 2007 after setting a new North Carolina record for single season stolen bases (52 in 54 attempts), in addition to leading the state in triples (7), and finishing among the state leaders in batting average (.472) and doubles (15). Perry was an All-Conference and All-Area performer at quarterback and defensive back on the gridiron as a senior.

The UnitGardner-Webb's offensive line this season is the largest, in terms of average height and average weight, since the move to Division I. The quintet averages 6-4 1/2, 314 pounds per man, with three-year starter Ivan Anderson (6-1, 287, Sr.) the "small guy" on that crew. True freshman tackle Corey O'Daniel (6-7, 348) is the biggest man on the Bulldogs' roster, and the two-time All-State selection from Louisville, Ky., has impressed early in his first preseason camp with GWU. O'Daniel's progress has allowed the Bulldog staff to move starting tackle Bailey Walker (6-6, 308, Jr.) to guard, which has also worked well through preseason practice. Walker and O'Daniel join starters David McCarthy (6-3, 300, Jr.) and Demario Deese (6-4, 327, Jr.) to gives GWU a quartet of starters who weigh in at 300 pounds or more. The Bulldogs' starting five measures larger than the offensive lines of the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. Should Kyle Webber (6-5, 275, So.) start at tackle in Daniels' place, GWU shrinks to 6-4, 300 pounds per man.

Instant Replay A FirstGardner-Webb experienced its first Division I FBS opponent on Saturday and, as a result of that game being on Mid American Conference turf, also experienced the first instant replay decision in GWU football history. With 11:02 to play in the game and Gardner-Webb trailing 27-14 – and driving – the Bulldogs had a pass ruled as an interception at the Ohio 11-yard line. The play was reversed by replay, allowing GWU to retain possession for one more play. The drive resulted in a punt.

Up NextGardner-Webb will return home to host Austin Peay (Tenn.) on Saturday, Sept. 29, in Spangler Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 pm ET. The Governors have been very successful in their second season playing in the OVC, going 2-1, with the lone loss coming in overtime to Tennessee State on Sept. 15. The Runnin' Bulldogs have never met Austin Peay on the gridiron. †
