Research background• First started analysing borough level HE data in

2002 to develop a strategy to align UEL programmes with emerging employment sectors

• UEL used the data to internally for competitor analysis, identification of potential new markets for courses & areas for targeting WP outreach

• Data repurposed to provide localised HE participation data and used as a KPI by CLG to justify capital spend on HE in the Thames Gateway

Model of collaboration• The research question is developed by our

partners and framed within a policy context• UEL produce the detailed data specification

& develop the application using our Business Intelligence reporting tool

• Data views and summary reports are generated instantly

• Analysis and report writing is conducted collaboratively

Value of collaboration• Most importantly, the Partnership is clustered

around a detailed evidence base• Without this partnership, it’s unlikely we would

undertake this research in the same way• Gained a deeper understanding of the

patterns of HE participation in London• Obtain greater insight into the emerging 16-

19 agenda • Facilitated internal partnerships within UEL

How UEL use the data• Extremely rich and valuable data set• Produce breakdown of UEL enrolments

and market share by borough• Conduct competitor analysis in our key

local recruitment markets• Produce automated reports looking at

borough, subject and previous institution• Benchmark performance on a wide range

of variables (Tariff scores, degree class, etc)
